As a kenyan, we appreciate the fact that there are people from a different corner of the earth that are willing to help us out of the kindness of their heart, but it has to stop. The truth is that our government is completely capable of taking care of its citizens, although they choose not to. Why? Because of corrupt people in power. And what these donations do is motivate these morally deficient people to vie for top positions.
This goes out to the lenders as well. Stop lending us money. It all gets embezzled and who do you think pays for them later? Us the citizens. And we’re already seeing evidence of this through excessive taxation in the recent years.

On the other hand you had the Clinton foundation, building shacks in Hati after the earthquake in 2010 from doner money. Charging $250,000.00 for each shack that was paid from the billions collected from around the world.. Contractors having to pay 1-5 million dollars in donations to the Clinton foundation to be able to get the contracts to build the shacks. That lost/misplaced WE money is now most likely converted to undetectable cryptocurrency to be used anywhere in the world. My high school like most Canadian schools had a tight relationship with Free the children. We went to their office in Toronto twice and our school was located in Ottawa. We went to WE Days. Their reps would attend our assemblies. It was always about money, not about doing good. It was a status and popularity thing to donate to them, go on trips to Kenya to "build schools" aka dig in the dirt and buy their accessories that were apparently made by women in Africa to give them a job 🙃 not donating was social suicide. during a visit to the headquarters in Toronto I was kicked out for bringing a copy of their prior year's spending available by searching their charity # and asking why so little actually went to programming and >50% to promotional materials. I'm just glad they won't be able to scan another generation of kids out of their allowances and birthday money.

It was quite predictable that the govt there would sabotage his trip after he "announced" his presence in the country that way. Even Common Sense will tell you that if this charity is really such a big scam then local authorities are probably getting a "cut of the action".

I learned my lesson on donating to these kinds of programs. Years ago we adopted a family. And we didn;t have much to start with. Sent money monthly as per the sign up and then sent extra on birthdays and holidays along with small gifts of toys and clothing and cards. I moved to another province and wouldn't you know i found out that others were supporting the same family. Same letters and pictures were sent to us both. It was fate i suppose that exposed it. Saw the same photos of the family i was supporting on a stand of a new friends house. I asked questions and showed the pics and letters i had received. Needless to say it was upsetting to both of us. Who knows how many others were receiving the same ones. I now support kids and families the best i can in my own area. It is much needed. And i know it makes a difference in their lives.

The second woman I spoke to was a really lovely person and explained a bit of the process to me including this part- that the child was never going to be left high and dry because their was always several donors... it doesn't work that way. It didn't bother me that he was getting more letters. I'm adopted and I know how important it is. It's always the deceit and deception that will destroy my trust in the end, especially when I do not see the necessity for it. Now I volunteer at an Animal Welfare League in the cat adoption section. I would love to work with kids, but wouldn't cope.
As a retired registered nurse there's massive red flags from the senior political structure on down to the empty medical centre at the flagship "headquarters" shown in the video. @@fembot521"Charities are scams"
That kind of a blanket statement is total and utter bs. As the head of a charity let me tell you, *everyone* involved is a volunteer. We exist to promote science & education, to advocate against scams and to help governments factor science, reality, into their policies.
All of our donations go towards those goals. Our financials are 100% transparent which is a legal requirement in our HQ country of Australia.
I am also on the board of several other charities, those are likewise volunteer roles. I do not believe in making money to help others, I do it for them not for self benefit. Indeed, I donate to all of the charities I'm involved with annually. That's something that happens regularly in this sector. These charities include ones that help in Africa. Including one that teaches business skills to the Congolese, helps them develop a business plan and then provides a microloan to start the business.
Most charities do amazing work. The overwhelming majority of charities are doing this for the right reasons and helping others.
You can't paint all charities with the same brush just because there's a couple of bad apples. There's bad apples in every industry. You certainly can't paint all charities with the same brush because you watched a bs netflix documentary.
Listen, the point of a documentary is to argue a point. Documentaries aren't news, they're not intended to be fair and balanced. They don't debunk their own claims, or tell you about all the counter points. They exist to try to convince you of what the directors opinions.
Like that time the vegan activist went after McDonald's in supersize me, only to be completely debunked.
Or the time the PETA member made a documentary about sea world in blackfish, using statements from interviewees in a way that entirely misrepresented what they were saying and was sued into oblivion.
Documentaries aren't information, they're an argument. They're a starting off point from which you should then look to credible sources for more information and form your own opinions from a disparate range of credible sources.
If you're just watching one documentary then taking it as gospel, you're doing it very, very, wrong.

Just like the other “WE” report, (this hasn’t blocked comments) both were awesome to watch. Bravo 5th Estate, this has been very refreshing and I look forward to never be bombarded with WE Day commercials on the radio.

Well done The Fifth Estate. This is quite good work of making charities accountable to the donors.

The Fifth Estate , I thought you'd like to know that I just discovered your channel yesterday 2/15/2022 at about 7pm and I've binge watched for 15 hours at this point . I started with the 1st Nations stories because I have family up there and have bounced to others out of sheer curiosity. The stuff your crew investigates is important to more than just Canadians as I'm an American but with a dual citizenship. After watching the WE charity IMO you investigate things that matter to the rest of the world as well . I'll be subscribing after I take a nap, so keep up the great work if you're still doing it .

You should know that Canada is no. 1 in investigative journalism, "60 Minutes" was modeled after the CBC's "This Week has Seven days," US investigative programs are just cheap knockoffs.

Thank you - "Asante sana!" - to all the Kenyans on this comment thread speaking up and WRITING THEIR TRUTH both about in-country looting and also global charities corruption.

Coming from an extremely corrupt country myself, it looks like the Kenyans in charge are also getting their cut.

On a much smaller scale I donated to a charity when I first started working and wanted to help. I used my information from work, phone number, address, etc. Not too much longer I was getting calls at work from other charities and realized that my information had been passed on. I started looking into how charities use the money sent to them and decided to stop donating. No matter what I did I was not able to stop the phone calls or information being mailed to me, and this was more than thirty years ago. It took moving to a new location to get rid of these people. Over the years, hearing or reading about charities abusing our donations has not surprised me, these people in your story are working to rip people off on an entirely new level.

My class room was under a tree. It was upgraded to an uncompleted building when I was in primary three, and then to a complete room that needed renovation in JHS. Then to a good boarding SHS and I'm now a junior in University.
Let me tell you, it wasn't an easy ride up here.
Shame on all those people in high positions taking advantage of other vulnerable kids future.

Imagine if they had, in fact, built all those schools the community would have greatly benefited from the donors.
Such a shame that the local government was into the fraud and great shame that those two brothers were only interested in making "'free money"' and they robbed all those donors who truly believed they were helping a community.

I only recently came across a bunch of WE shirts ... at the Dollaramas, 150km between cities in Ontario. Haven't gone to others.
I have always been one for donating, and seeing this, makes my cry. So many "charities" are Not using the donated funds by innocent good people, struggling to make ends meat, instead, are utilizing the funds intended for schools, for their own personal gains.
How are we as adults supposed to believe in the greater good when we see such "charities" Taking from us, from our children who are trying to help other children.
Thank-You for your dedication in finding the Truth. THANK-YOU

Remember that we tried it in the 80s with live aid. But all the money went to the warlords and their weapons. It made the continent unstable.
