    You should get stitched tank covers that slip over the back of the tanks. They would hide the ugly and protect against rocks and road debris.

    Cracked drums.. puts them back on.. and the painted tank sides... it’ll look like a starry night after a month of use. Better off using a rubber rhino liner type coating than spray paint.. Like the series tho.. and the chrome rims..

    • @ray-vf6ux
      @ray-vf6ux 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When he said cracks he means that the drums have heat cracks in them. That is normal for those drums. Drums are good for two sets of bracks. So he's not putting anybody in danger with them.

    Rear brakes, all turn all the way in, 1/4 turn out and front brakes, all in, 1/2 turn out. That's the D.O.T standard and you don't want the front brakes grabbing before the brake (it will throw you off the road if they grab 1st). Great job fellas, it looks good!!! Be safe and God Bless!!!

    I read a lot of comments about front brakes. I drove long haul in the 1970s and early 80s. It may seem strange and counter intuitive to the average four wheeler, but at that time, front brakes were considered a hazard.
    The first truck I owned and drove was a cabover White twin screw with a 250 Cummings 10 speed and it had no front brakes. Back then, many owner-operators feared front brakes because unless they were adjusted perfectly, they could cause a lot more harm than good during an emergency stop.
    Drivers who were buying new trucks at the time with front brakes from the factory would either remove them or back them off to make the truck safer.
    I drove during the winter months while I was a farmer and I never drove a truck with front brakes. They were all cab overs by the way. The one I loved was a 1976 cabover Freightliner 13 speed with a whistling Cat. It could pull 110 bales of flat cotton down I-20 at 80 mph.
    Driving a cab over is a totally different experience than driving a long nose. The first time I got behind of wheel of a long nose Pete, after driving a cabover for years, I found myself crowding the line. To me, sitting above the left wheel in a cabover is a much more natural position for optimal control and observation.
    After thought... As I recall, many cabover trucks in those days were designed for 10-20s (tube type) or 11-22-5 tubeless.

  • @pitbullxv750
    @pitbullxv750 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Bruce,
    when fitting truck wheels get a couple of tire irons and push them under the tires at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions.
    Push them through until they reach the inside of the tire.
    You'll then be able to lift the wheel with ease and with a bit of practice you'll be able to move the wheel slightly left or right and even a small rotation.
    It'll definitely save your back and maybe some broken fingers.
    Nice job on the truck too.

  • @twotone3471

      I'm guessing the speedometer will be inaccurate now too, I think a bigger tyre (tire) means you'll actually be going faster than what the speedo says.

    • @twotone3471
      @twotone3471 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Buddy Wiser I remember the International conventionals of the era having terrible turning radius issues due to the steering stops they used as a band-aid solution to the issue of tires rubbing. Having a cabover was almost as good as a yard dog for backing into a dock, and more than once I picked up $20 from a "Professional" driver who couldn't fit his truck into a dock.

    When old fuel hoses get hard on the outside they're also hard on the inside & can flake off into the fuel. Before the filters it just clogs the filter but after the filters it can take out a pump &/or injectors. Fresh hoses on an old truck are a lot cheaper than a tow job & repair.

    Since you have left so much rust on the frame and springs etc, you should at least treat the rust before you paint, in order to neutralize it. To go through all this effort and just try and paint over all that rust is a shame. The paint will not stop the rust, it will just keep rusting and shorten the life of those components.... Joe

      @@3storiesUp the rust will slow way down now that its painted you cant really treat rust permanently without completly tearing the truck down to a bare frame and dissecting the cross members, then you have to sand blast the rust away and use a primer sealer. That process would cost WAY than The trucks value. It's not even necessary as it would just be cosmetic, like I said it will rust so slowly because of the frames alloys it will be structurally sound long after the motor dies.

    To make it easier to remove drums in the future, back off the slack adjuster using the 7/16ths bolt on the adjuster itself. If it is Rockwell/meritor you will have to either remove the locking pawl or pull the disc out a little ways to back those off. When tightening the adjuster, bring the shoes in so that they just touch. Then back off about 1/2 turn on the adjuster.

      @Nevets G You want to lie the wheel face down (on some card or rags to you don't scratch it) and put the tire on from the back side. Every one I've seen in thse videos they did it the other way round with the outside face of the wheel upwards, which is much more difficult to do and more likely to scratch if you slip with the pry bar.

      actually the way they did ir is correct..as a 15 yr veteran truck driver and a 30 yr wrencher i can tell you from experience that the way they did ir is the easier way since the lip on the back of the wheel is thicker than the lip on the front of the wheel..that is the way they are designed ....with these old alcoas i have changed quite a few on the side of the road and can verify that they did it the easier way ..however they should have used the tire spud bar to slide under the bottom of the tire and picked up on it when they were putting the outside dual on ...not a keyboard cowboy just have experience to back up my opinion
