Daddy is starting to remind me of Mick Jagger and it’s not a good thing. Martin’s writing is shit and the only thing that would salvage it is Alan back in the studio.

Alan will ALWAYS be my favorite Depeche Mode Band-member. He's always such a smart, charming and down to earth gentleman. Each time i see him i have to smile and feel like seeing a VERY good friend i really really deeply care for.
I wish I could tell him. I dunno if it's important, but I just hope he knows how much the fans appreciate him. His creativity and innovation made those records far more exciting than they would have been. The Alan Wilder period was by far the best.

They were going through hard times and he bailed.He should of taken a break and he should of sat down with the band and he should of tried to discuss the problems and try to make things work.

Yes, that's the difference and why he was always made to feel like he wasn't part of the band- they come from different upbringings and classes. Can you imagine how threatened Andrew felt, and was probably the first to want to drive Alan out- at the expense of any more good DM music.

He stood on stage with his keyboard UNPLUGGED while he was clapping along when the band played live. Alan is a classically trained musician who knows his s*** I’m beyond heartbroken that Alan Wilder is no longer in DM. One more album would be incredible. One can only hope.
A true gentleman and a musical genius. With his music, he contributed so much in shaping many people's lives. If I met him, I'd hug him and tell him how much he counts.
I met the band backstage several times from the SGR tour through to the Violator tour and Alan was always accommodating and happy to talk. The part he played in the band was massively underrated and the band should have been more humble and respectful in recognising the work he did. It's clear from this and many interviews that Alan still finds it difficult and painful to express his true feelings for the band, after the way he was treated. Although the band have continued to make some fantastic tracks since the split, for me, they would have been even better with Alan in it. Such a shame and a real loss to us as fans.
His contributions were a gift. He worked extremely hard, perhaps obsessively - which may have been difficult for the rest to work with, and led to his departure. My deep desire is for Allan to collaborate with them again. Perhaps select tracks, with onsite Fletch helping with production. Alan we miss your incredible work on Depeche Mode. You are sorely missed. We love you.
Seems like far the most intelligent guy in the band, also. I'm not sure they would have made it as big for as long as...without Wilder. I don't know that his contribution is underrated however..?

His very first comment reveals it all: "I wasn't really interested in McCartney after the Beatles much. I think the combination of the two was the best really, wasn't it?" Goodness, Alan, if only you knew what everybody is thinking about you and Martin and Dave (and Fletch)... The difference being that all of these are still alive and could hypothetically be brought back together some way or another.
I wonder, did he say this on purpose? Was he manipulative like this? His way of saying, I didn’t like Depeche Mode without Alan Wilder? Or was it his way of saying, I don’t like Alan Wilder without Depeche Mode? He always seemed to be the most careful and most intelligent of all the 4 of them in interviews. I do believe he had the most education amongst them all. He was the only one among them who was classically trained. He was definitely the most sophisticated among the 4 of them. The rest of the band give very simple answers ( they were raised in a smaller town - Alan was raised in London) in interviews , but Alan delves into musical history of different bands and genres.
DM was never the same following Alan Wilder's departure. He busted ass in studio to create that iconic mood and atmosphere defining DM. When he left, the core spirit went with him.
Wilder is/was extremely talented and a key part of their sound during that time. But if you listen to his post-DM Recoil stuff, I'm not so sure he would have kept DM moving forward. I don't know if/what he has done in terms of music lately, but it seems he is effectively retired.
@@Zontar82 Ultra was great and I loved Sounds of the Universe. Each sans- Wilder album has a few killer tunes on them. Exciter was a total pant load though except for "I am You". "Cover Me" from their last album was great. Strange how the best sounding tunes are the ones that Dave wrote like "Come Back", "Should be Higher", and "Suffer Well". I still wish Alan was back in. If you haven't checked out his remix of "In Chains" from SOTU, you should. The last true DM song IMO.
If Depeche ever releases a “final” album I really truly wish Alan would have some involvement in some way. Wether that be in the studio or playing live. Hearing enjoy the silence for the last time with Alan on a synthesiser would just feel so right.
Alan wilder genius total respect to this man who changed the sound of mode from see you and and the meaning of love in 82 to the brilliant construction time again in 83 within a year of joining the band ....the next 12 years of songs have his massive influence on them ....Alan you will always have mode fans hearts ...
His personality keeps bringing me back to listen to this interview. I was an on again off again fan I guess busy raising a family in the 90's. Now that they are grown I got them to take me to the 2023 tour, twice. Somewhere someone talked about a recent recording of Alan's , I bought it. A very integral part of DM and a very talented man. I can only imagine being a part of a band, that has to be a massive amount of empathy and also the balance of individuality and camaraderie to give and take to create music.
This was/is a great interviewing technique for musicians, and so interesting to see Alan Wilder's anticipation and recognition of the tracks. He is such an honourable person. As much as I love Depeche Mode, part of me wants to see/hear Alan Wilder rip the other 3 to shreds, but I don't think he has even come close to doing so. It's a musical tragedy that he ended up walking. NEVER forgotten.

I never understood why I was so drawn to him from among all the other members. He’s intimidatingly talented of course but I love how low key and humble he is. He has a calm demeanor which is a contrast to me. Lol.

I have watched this short documentary three times over the past year and I never tire watching Alan's expressions after listening to influential tracks over a wireless speaker. This expose is so well done and minimalist. Thank you so much for producing this.
I liked when Alan Alan speaks on technical details about making an album,a song. You can really tell what part of DM he was in his days. I still love them but it's not the same since Alan left. No matter what producers,they were never able to find again that magic he put in their music 25 years later.
Never going to happen. Ever. Martin was even too proud to ask for the samplings made for the MFTM, World Violation and Devotional tours and in the end Alan sold them off at an auction and we were left with piss poor Virus T1 or the like synth versions of classic DM layered and sampled sounds for the singles tour and every tour after that (except for parts of Delta and Spirit which used some newly generated samples). This is a divorce that is never going to heal.
MovieViking Is THAT what happened?! That sucks!!! Because as much as I adore DM, the live versions of a lot of my favourites like Behind The Wheel and Policy just sound like half assed cover versions with Dave singing them. It’s really incredible just how much weight Alan brought to the table 😔 That SOFAD tour has by far the coolest live versions of every one of those tunes.

@@MovieViking Martin could sample the sounds himself from the original multitracks or ask somebody to do it and likely has the floppy disks with Alan's, Fletch's and his own keyboard sounds from every tour. Alan selling them off has nothing to do with what they use on stage now. The problem is that Martin doesn't care about the production and Gordeno is a talented but an incredibly arrogant and unoriginal musician that has too much creative control. As a result, the current live performances have a piss-poor production with generic keyboard sounds and drums that sound like a bag of potatoes.
I love Alan's integrity throughout his career and it shows in this interview.Anyone like Alan who is good at severing bad situations still has regrets but regrets from their actions and not their own.
I don't care what any devote say's dm did Alan dirty. He was the workhorse/professional musician of dm and pushed the band forward. I was at the devotional show in Dublin in 1993 when I was a kid, best live show I was ever at , I've been to many dm show's all over the world since but no comparison to the first show when Alan got behind the drum kit for the second half of the show
I'm not sure Fletch would want to, but I would go one of two routes for the next album a) get Alan to produce it or b) get whoever produced Ocean because that was one of Dave's best vocals in years imho.
@@marooqi post SOFAD, Fletch said he wouldn't do another album with him. The working relationship between Alan and Martin broke down, Martin is more likely to appease his childhood friend, that someone who would be good for the band.

@@marooqi to be fair I liked Playing the angel, and Delta Machine had it's moments. I do recall an interview post the Teenage Cancer Trust gig, and someone asked if Alan would come back to DM, and they all dismissed it by referencing Christian and Peter. I thought it was telling the Hall of Fame induction was the three of them, and they thanked Alan and Vince, but also Christian and Peter. In many ways I think they see themselves as a three-piece with Christian and Peter as sidemen.
i'm not a massive DM fan but I truly respect and admire everything Alan did for the band when he was with the rest of the guys....you're great Alan for reals !
Alan was always my favourite DM member. Martin compositions functioned as a drawing in a canvas that Alan would add shades, lights and colours here and there. At least that's what it seemed like for me. And here you can hear him saying that editing and processing was his favourite kind of work and not composing. Those two guys were meant for each other in making music.
The music Depeche Mode made when Alan Wilder was a group member is the only reason why they are in the Rock ‘n’ Roll hall of fame. There is no other reason

Wilder was not known for being quite so down-to-earth in his Depeche Mode days. He always seemed smart and thoughtful, but he also had a reputation for being stubborn and the most hedonistic in the band until Gahan got into drugs.

Yes he certainly did, and was largely responsible for the massive success of the Violator album. He did sit in with DM recently, and it would be fantastic, in my humble opinion, if he produced/played/toured on the next DM album. One can dream. Such a supremely talented musician/artist and a humble guy.
It’s very good to hear to hear Wilder’s voice and hearing his stories. Depeche Mode listener since the beginning years here! Los Angeles then and now. I know from experience how the art/entertainment world can be a bumpy ride, and some of your best memories, some of your very sweetest memories, can be memories of just holding on and staying on the ride. Alan Wilder’s influence on the music was extremely profound, and continues so. Nice to see his work is so much appreciated. Some very fine music has come from this band.
Alan Wilder is an absolute genius & was a massive reason why DM were at their peak, when he was there (Martyn’s song writing, Dave’s vocals, Alan’s ear & patients to get it right)
Now that Fletch is sadly gone and much missed from us fans, I only see a future for DM WITH Alan Wilder. I also always said, leave them alone, they all seem to be happy. We had the somebody reunion with Alan on the piano, BUT: now as we only have two bandmembers left, I would celebrate a reunion with Alan. I would love to hear one last album with him involved, with maybe a bit deeper and more upbeat sound. Though I really enjoy Memento Mori, I really think they should reunite for all the fans for one last album. And please, IF that happens: don't ask any questions why, just be happy.🎉

Gore was undoubtedly the song writing talent in the band. Alan had a magic ear for beat and arrangement, that came from his classical background. Seems a lovely guy and great musician. Pity he left the band.
Probably futile, but a full reunion tour would be a thing of beauty. The harmonies, and the sheer brilliance of the live playing on 101, were, and still are, superlative.
I just realized that the albums that i considered the best of Depeche Mode were the ones with Alan work. The first time i heard ULTRA, you could sense there were something missing. They shouldnt have never let him go. None of their albums without Alan are important to me really.

The exact same thing happened to me. I didn't understand why I only liked some albums and not others. Until I knew the story and then I realized how important Alan was in the band's musical style. A sadness the departure of him.
I can mostly agree, though Home is just sublime - plus, the song created some special moments on tour, with the audience singing the outro tag after the band finished the song. I also love the instrumentation in Freestate, but the real sleeper for me is Sister of Night - I would kill to hear that chorus performed live.
Dave and his addiction made Alan to loose his trust and effort. Although, he should collaborate with Martin Gore since they are good friends. But who knows.

He quit because he did all the production, tour preproduction and all the countless hours in the studio while the rest of the band fucked about and stayed high. Fletch does nothing, but somehow has managed make a career out of clapping and waving his arms.

I could be wrong but I never got the impression that that was the problem for him. It seems that it was not getting the recognition his input deserved, from his bandmates, that most hurts.
It would be difficult to overstate Alan Wilder's contribution to DM achieving the sustained global popularity that perhaps only 20 other artists in modern music history have reached. There is nothing on A Broken Frame that even hints at Martin being inclined, let alone capable, of making a record like Construction Time Again. Without the pivot to an industrial soundscape-along with the production prowess and work ethic that Alan brought to Construction Time Again-we don't get Black Celebration, Masses, or Violator. And those four records are the reason we are still talking about DM today.

Fletch hated Alan and was jealous of his skill and ability, Behind Alans back Fletch the parasite was telling the others Alan was trying to take over the band, this was at a time when Dave was always stoned sky high and Martin drunk with the parasite suffering mental health problems. I miss this man so much. It breaks my heart that he's retired and we'll likely never see or hear from him ever again. I never thought he'd return to DM permanently, but that Albert Hall thing in 2010 (and other events around that time) made it seem like they were getting on better and there was the hope of other collaborations/one-offs. It was like they were in a good place, but something happened: Alan's auction is the most obvious, but I've also heard that there were payment issues surrounding Alan's remix of 'In Chains' before then. I don't know. In any case, it's so sad how Alan has disappeared and become a taboo topic. (Dave used to talk fondly of him, so to see Dave's hostile reaction to a mention of Alan during the latest press tour really took me aback.) I find it so sad that we'll never see Alan with Martin and Dave again - even just for one evening. I wouldn't expect a tour (though I'd love that) or even a full concert. I just wish we could have one final chance to see them together performing a set or one of their classics (like ETS) to provide some much-needed _positive_ closure. But it's clear that even that's too much to ask for. 😔

Wilder is/was extremely talented and a key part of their sound during that time. But if you listen to his post-DM Recoil stuff, I'm not so sure he would have kept DM moving forward. I don't know if/what he has done in terms of music lately, but it seems he is effectively retired.
agreed 100%. Ultra is the only sans- Wilder album that i really like, and the last, best DM album IMO. they went down the drain after exciter
@@Zontar82 Ultra was great and I loved Sounds of the Universe. Each sans- Wilder album has a few killer tunes on them. Exciter was a total pant load though except for "I am You". "Cover Me" from their last album was great. Strange how the best sounding tunes are the ones that Dave wrote like "Come Back", "Should be Higher", and "Suffer Well". I still wish Alan was back in. If you haven't checked out his remix of "In Chains" from SOTU, you should. The last true DM song IMO.

If Depeche ever releases a “final” album I really truly wish Alan would have some involvement in some way. Wether that be in the studio or playing live. Hearing enjoy the silence for the last time with Alan on a synthesiser would just feel so right.

His personality keeps bringing me back to listen to this interview. I was an on again off again fan I guess busy raising a family in the 90's. Now that they are grown I got them to take me to the 2023 tour, twice. Somewhere someone talked about a recent recording of Alan's , I bought it. A very integral part of DM and a very talented man. I can only imagine being a part of a band, that has to be a massive amount of empathy and also the balance of individuality and camaraderie to give and take to create music.
This was/is a great interviewing technique for musicians, and so interesting to see Alan Wilder's anticipation and recognition of the tracks. He is such an honourable person. As much as I love Depeche Mode, part of me wants to see/hear Alan Wilder rip the other 3 to shreds, but I don't think he has even come close to doing so. It's a musical tragedy that he ended up walking. NEVER forgotten.
I come over and watch this video every once in a while, like searching for comfort and reassurance that the past is somehow still the present.

I have watched this short documentary three times over the past year and I never tire watching Alan's expressions after listening to influential tracks over a wireless speaker. This expose is so well done and minimalist. Thank you so much for producing this.
I liked when Alan Alan speaks on technical details about making an album,a song. You can really tell what part of DM he was in his days. I still love them but it's not the same since Alan left. No matter what producers,they were never able to find again that magic he put in their music 25 years later.

The 30th anniversary of Violator is coming up soon. How cool would it be if they toured that album with Alan Wilder back in the band...
Never going to happen. Ever. Martin was even too proud to ask for the samplings made for the MFTM, World Violation and Devotional tours and in the end Alan sold them off at an auction and we were left with piss poor Virus T1 or the like synth versions of classic DM layered and sampled sounds for the singles tour and every tour after that (except for parts of Delta and Spirit which used some newly generated samples). This is a divorce that is never going to heal.

MovieViking Is THAT what happened?! That sucks!!! Because as much as I adore DM, the live versions of a lot of my favourites like Behind The Wheel and Policy just sound like half assed cover versions with Dave singing them. It’s really incredible just how much weight Alan brought to the table 😔 That SOFAD tour has by far the coolest live versions of every one of those tunes.
@@RobBeatdownBrown And I don't think that it's an issue that DM can't sample their own sounds and sound the same but are just lazy and I think give too much free control to Peter Gordeno who has changed the sounds and even the melody of the songs. I can't stand that guy...arghh. So now DM sound like a bad cover band with yes Dave as the singer... Even stranger is that some DM cover bands sound much better than them.... have you checked this band called Moded? I usually dislike cover bands but these guys do bring me back to the old DM tours.

@@MovieViking Martin could sample the sounds himself from the original multitracks or ask somebody to do it and likely has the floppy disks with Alan's, Fletch's and his own keyboard sounds from every tour. Alan selling them off has nothing to do with what they use on stage now. The problem is that Martin doesn't care about the production and Gordeno is a talented but an incredibly arrogant and unoriginal musician that has too much creative control. As a result, the current live performances have a piss-poor production with generic keyboard sounds and drums that sound like a bag of potatoes.
I love Alan's integrity throughout his career and it shows in this interview.Anyone like Alan who is good at severing bad situations still has regrets but regrets from their actions and not their own.
I don't care what any devote say's dm did Alan dirty. He was the workhorse/professional musician of dm and pushed the band forward. I was at the devotional show in Dublin in 1993 when I was a kid, best live show I was ever at , I've been to many dm show's all over the world since but no comparison to the first show when Alan got behind the drum kit for the second half of the show
A logical compromise to me would be...if we’re all blessed enough to get one more DM album, just get Alan to produce it.
I'm not sure Fletch would want to, but I would go one of two routes for the next album a) get Alan to produce it or b) get whoever produced Ocean because that was one of Dave's best vocals in years imho.

@@marooqi post SOFAD, Fletch said he wouldn't do another album with him. The working relationship between Alan and Martin broke down, Martin is more likely to appease his childhood friend, that someone who would be good for the band.
@@garbarek1078 you never know, they might be ready to make good music again, not that Fletch is even part of that process. I did take into acct Martin and Fletch side with one another, but Alan would be doing them a FAVOR at this point.
@@marooqi to be fair I liked Playing the angel, and Delta Machine had it's moments. I do recall an interview post the Teenage Cancer Trust gig, and someone asked if Alan would come back to DM, and they all dismissed it by referencing Christian and Peter. I thought it was telling the Hall of Fame induction was the three of them, and they thanked Alan and Vince, but also Christian and Peter. In many ways I think they see themselves as a three-piece with Christian and Peter as sidemen.

Alan was always my favourite DM member. Martin compositions functioned as a drawing in a canvas that Alan would add shades, lights and colours here and there. At least that's what it seemed like for me. And here you can hear him saying that editing and processing was his favourite kind of work and not composing. Those two guys were meant for each other in making music.

Wilder was not known for being quite so down-to-earth in his Depeche Mode days. He always seemed smart and thoughtful, but he also had a reputation for being stubborn and the most hedonistic in the band until Gahan got into drugs.

It’s very good to hear to hear Wilder’s voice and hearing his stories. Depeche Mode listener since the beginning years here! Los Angeles then and now. I know from experience how the art/entertainment world can be a bumpy ride, and some of your best memories, some of your very sweetest memories, can be memories of just holding on and staying on the ride. Alan Wilder’s influence on the music was extremely profound, and continues so. Nice to see his work is so much appreciated. Some very fine music has come from this band.

Alan Wilder is an absolute genius & was a massive reason why DM were at their peak, when he was there (Martyn’s song writing, Dave’s vocals, Alan’s ear & patients to get it right)
Seems like Alan is a very exacting, precise man which is probably why DM albums where so bloody good from 1981-1995. :)
Alan only joined the band in 1982 and first contributed to the songs in 1983 (Get the Balance Right).
What a pleasant guy he seems, Enjoyed watching this very much.
Now that Fletch is sadly gone and much missed from us fans, I only see a future for DM WITH Alan Wilder. I also always said, leave them alone, they all seem to be happy. We had the somebody reunion with Alan on the piano, BUT: now as we only have two bandmembers left, I would celebrate a reunion with Alan. I would love to hear one last album with him involved, with maybe a bit deeper and more upbeat sound. Though I really enjoy Memento Mori, I really think they should reunite for all the fans for one last album. And please, IF that happens: don't ask any questions why, just be happy.🎉

Gore was undoubtedly the song writing talent in the band. Alan had a magic ear for beat and arrangement, that came from his classical background. Seems a lovely guy and great musician. Pity he left the band.
Probably futile, but a full reunion tour would be a thing of beauty. The harmonies, and the sheer brilliance of the live playing on 101, were, and still are, superlative.
I just realized that the albums that i considered the best of Depeche Mode were the ones with Alan work. The first time i heard ULTRA, you could sense there were something missing. They shouldnt have never let him go. None of their albums without Alan are important to me really.
I remember when ultra came out. The tracks felt empty and dead. The sound was very minimal.
@@Tom-vg5nb to be honest with you i even lost my respect for them after this, it feels like they are now taking all the credit for a work that was only possible because of Alan. When you compare that era, with the albums post Alan departure, it becomes too obvious.
The exact same thing happened to me. I didn't understand why I only liked some albums and not others. Until I knew the story and then I realized how important Alan was in the band's musical style. A sadness the departure of him.
Playing the Angel comes close but yeah I agree. Ultra is pretty good and a miracle it was actually made.
I can mostly agree, though Home is just sublime - plus, the song created some special moments on tour, with the audience singing the outro tag after the band finished the song. I also love the instrumentation in Freestate, but the real sleeper for me is Sister of Night - I would kill to hear that chorus performed live.

Dave and his addiction made Alan to loose his trust and effort. Although, he should collaborate with Martin Gore since they are good friends. But who knows.
@@Purrrelll he didn't quit because of Dave doing drugs. He quit because he did all the production, tour preproduction and all the countless hours in the studio while the rest of the band fucked about and stayed high. Fletch does nothing, but somehow has managed make a career out of clapping and waving his arms.

He was as handsome as Dave and as talented as Martin but didn't get the spotlight as much as them. For an intelligent guy/genious like him, it must be something hard to endure.
I could be wrong but I never got the impression that that was the problem for him. It seems that it was not getting the recognition his input deserved, from his bandmates, that most hurts.

It would be difficult to overstate Alan Wilder's contribution to DM achieving the sustained global popularity that perhaps only 20 other artists in modern music history have reached.
There is nothing on A Broken Frame that even hints at Martin being inclined, let alone capable, of making a record like Construction Time Again. Without the pivot to an industrial soundscape-along with the production prowess and work ethic that Alan brought to Construction Time Again-we don't get Black Celebration, Masses, or Violator. And those four records are the reason we are still talking about DM today.

Fletch hated Alan and was jealous of his skill and ability, Behind Alans back Fletch the parasite was telling the others Alan was trying to take over the band, this was at a time when Dave was always stoned sky high and Martin drunk with the parasite suffering mental health problems. I miss this man so much. It breaks my heart that he's retired and we'll likely never see or hear from him ever again. I never thought he'd return to DM permanently, but that Albert Hall thing in 2010 (and other events around that time) made it seem like they were getting on better and there was the hope of other collaborations/one-offs. It was like they were in a good place, but something happened: Alan's auction is the most obvious, but I've also heard that there were payment issues surrounding Alan's remix of 'In Chains' before then. I don't know. In any case, it's so sad how Alan has disappeared and become a taboo topic. (Dave used to talk fondly of him, so to see Dave's hostile reaction to a mention of Alan during the latest press tour really took me aback.) I find it so sad that we'll never see Alan with Martin and Dave again - even just for one evening. I wouldn't expect a tour (though I'd love that) or even a full concert. I just wish we could have one final chance to see them together performing a set or one of their classics (like ETS) to provide some much-needed _positive_ closure. But it's clear that even that's too much to ask for. 😔

@@ehenyor There was, but the uploader deleted it: IMO, because the video was meant to 'shame' people about missing Alan (I noticed that the uploader hearted the 'get over it'-type comments); however, many of the comments were critical of Dave's remarks and people were saying that they still missed Alan regardless. I don't think that was what the uploader anticipated, so they deleted the video. However, the full interview may still be available. (The deleted video was a section of a longer interview with the press.)
