I'm glad that you digged Ultra!! But I would absolutely recommend the Songs of Faith and Devotion album. Arguably the most chaotic yet incredible album they ever released, and was also the precursor to Ultra. Faith and Devotion also has some of their greatest works - Walking In My Shoes, Condemnation, Mercy In You, Judas, In Your Room, I Feel You.... I can't wait to hear you get round to it :)
The Devotional / Exotic tour they did in promotion with this album, is also dubbed the most debauched rock tour in history, but the live set is just absolutely incredible.... possibly peak Depeche!

Since "Ultra" to "Spirit" (and even on their second album - "A Broken Frame") they worked as a three-piece band. And on last album, "Memento Mori" (2023), Martin and Dave only were the remaining band members (since the sudden death of their long mentor and supporter - Andrew Fletcher; he died in mid 2022).
On their first album, "Speak & Spell", Martin, Dave & Andrew had another member - Vince Clarke, which later formed bands "Erasure" and "Yazoo". And, since the late 1982 til the end of "Exotic Tour" (mid 1995), they had another 4th member - Alan Wilder

This album came out right near the end of the first wave of Grunge. A lot of bands were doing dark and broody, Manson was on his way to becoming a mega hit, and bands like Type O Negative were at their peak. Ultra was DMs way of saying "Not so fast, this is how you do dark" (well that and Dave almost died, and the band had lost Alan). Not many bands have a 3 album run like Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra.

I loved your reaction! I have been a fan of Depeche Mode for as long as I can remember, Ultra is my 3rd favorite album of theirs. This album was the most complicated for the band to record, since Dave Gahan (the lead vocalist) was in rehabilitation for the whole addiction issue, causing him to lose part of his ability to sing at the time. That is why several songs on this album are instrumental, since Martin Gore and Andy were responsible for composing and producing much of the entire album. If you liked it, I highly recommend listening to Songs Of Faith And Devotion (for me, that's their best album). Thanks for everything, Molly

You really have to listen to dM albums chronologically to appreciate their rise to greatness and how far they’ve come. Their growth was completely organic, experimental and fused by grinding the club scenes. They didn’t chase hits, they didn’t fit a mold. They were given the leeway by a terrific, independent record label to discover their style, and it ultimately translated into something completely unique and lasting. Start from the beginning and take the journey of a band who just did it the right way.

This is my favorite Depeche Mode album. I've always been fascinated by 90's music, especially the late 90's. This album perfectly represents the dark, gloomy, electronic sound and mood of those times. And my all-time favorite DM song "Only When I Lose Myself" is also from that period of time. It was released a year later on "The Singles 86-98" compilation, but it really sucks that the song didn't make it onto Ultra, as it perfectly captured and developed the sound of the album.

Hearing "Barrel of a Gun" on the radio in 1997 was my real introduction to DM (though I had heard some of the 80's hits on the radio years before, I suppose). In those days, as a 15 year-old with little cash, my best option was to record it off the radio onto a cassette tape! A year later, I heard "Only When I Lose Myself" on the radio and the cycle repeated... I had to buy "The Singles 86>98" and then DM became MY band... I back-tracked to acquire everything I could from their catalogue.

At least here in England because i think they released some albums in the US that were not released here, such as their DM so far album (or whatever it was called?) which was like an album of the music they'd previously released in England and Europe when they started taking off stateside as a way of bringing American fans up to date with the work they'd done previously in England/Europe. But I'm not too clued up with much of their post 2006 material as at my age I'm too attached to their earlier work.

I’m really glad I’ve discovered this reaction channel! Ultra is the album that brought me into phenomenon that is Depeche Mode and it’s one of the albums I connected with the most in my youth (42 years old here). It’s also in many ways, their most important album because it was created at a time when the band by all rights shouldn’t have even existed anymore, but it somehow brought them back from the brink. “It’s No Good” is the kind of track that so many pop groups wish they had come up with first because of its unmistakable hook. And “Home” is a track that Madonna would’ve killed to have on her Ray of Light album. Definitely check out Memento Mori, their most recent album; and follow up with Some Great Reward (1984). That’s when they started to truly become “The Mode”.

If you like Depeche Mode then I definitely recomened checking out Joy Division and New Order, and yes the 2 bands are connected Long story short the lead singer of Joy Division (Ian Curtis) unalived himself in May of 1980 (he was only 23 so very tragic and sad), but shortly after the surviving members formed New Order, but I really think you'll enjoy the music of both bands. Best album Joy Division album to start with would be their 1979 album "Unknown Pleasures", best New Order album to start with would be their 1987 album :"Substance"

You can clearly see the influence Depeche Mode had on Nine Inch Nails (and vice versa) with this album: the first track alone sounds like Closer or Head Like A Hole.
Trent Reznor and Dave Gahan had this creative feedback loop for a few years.
Depeche mode use some of the most interesting melodic and harmonic combinations in modern music. Gahan makes use of a lot of different (non-standard) chord progressions, keys, and modes, and _loves_ contrast, dissonance, and juxtaposition.
Seriously interesting music for their entire catalogue.
There's a Canadian band, The Tea Party, that is, in a lot of ways, like DM, but also completely unlike them. Highly recommend giving them a listen. Transmission is great, The Tea Party is an amazing debut album, Splendor Solis is a fantastic sophomore album, and Edges of Twilight is a masterpiece.
