I found it interesting that the actress who plays Aunt Marge is the same one who played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda. She is very good at playing a villain! I remember as a kid being shocked that they used the word "bitch" in both the book and the movie ("If there's something wrong with the bitch, there'll be something wrong with the pup").
Loved Stan and the humor he brought to the serious situation Harry was in! That was some great comedic relief. I also love all the scenes that Fred and George are in -- I love when books make me laugh :)
I remember learning that too! She's is fan-freakin'-tastic at both!!
Maybe it's me growing up in a house where we all cursed, it was the NY way, that I wasn't as surprised but I do think because that language wasn't said so commonly, it made it all the more powerful. Ya know?
Right?!! The way he just said, 'Bye, Neville' had me cracking up. Love, love, love him! I too love when books make me laugh. 😁

Fab thumbnail and discussion as always. We’re only four chapters in but I’m already loving this! There’s so many new things introduced and character development.
I agree with Matt that it’s so annoying that in the film Harry is doing magic. It’s just so out of place.
One thing that has always stuck with me is the story of Wendolyn burning in the fires. I always imagine that happening in any other book I read about witches 😂😂
The films miss out so much interaction with the Dursleys and I think it’s really important to see Harry’s misery and how unpleasant they really are to him. The gifting of the 50p for Christmas I’ve always thought of as fulfilling basic duty of care but making it as obvious as possible to Harry that he is not important.
Again I agree with your feelings about the development of Hermione and Ron’s characters. We see Hermione on holiday with her family and we also see them spending time together comfortably.
When you go to visit the Warner bros studios there is a circle of all the wands. The interactor explained to me that all wands were like Dracos for the first film and then they made them all different. Tom Felton liked his how it was and so they kept Draco’s as the only wand that stayed true to its original shape.
It makes me laugh when very British things occur - they stand out to you but to me they don’t. Runner beans is a great example and torch which I guess has come from medieval descriptions. Musical statues is a game played at children’s parties to music. When the music stops you have to stand still and if you move you are out.
Loving the start of seeing Harry a bit more sassy. That’s all missed in the films. Aunt Marge is a great character because although she dislikes Harry she differs from the Dursleys. She likes to get him in front of her so she can bully and belittle him.
Love the Knight bus chapter. It’s a real bit of humour and I also find Stan calling Harry Neville really amusing.
Harry’s time in the Leaky Cauldron is probably the happiest time of his life. He has no one being nasty to him which he has at home and at school. He has freedom for the first time and he has money to spend. It’s interesting how much he wants to complete his homework which is a side of him we don’t see in the films. Like the fact that there is an early introduction to the Grim and that Harry is aware of it this early. The showy black rats at the menagerie always make me smile. I think it’s Sirius that mentions the possibility of Crookshanks being a kneazle later on. Crookshanks is one of my favourite magical creatures.

That's a good point. The 50p and other gifts do line up more with the duty idea, as the Dursleys seem to do everything else out of a duty.
Very cool! I do remember learning that about Draco's want from an interview with Felton but I now have even more reason to want to visit the tour. It's definitely on our list!

Totally agree! I think it's why I loved that Leaky Cauldron chapter so much. He was so free, curious, and just excited to just be in the world. It's how I think we all feel when we open these books or walk into the Wizarding World at Universal. 💖

About the silly insultingly odd non presents that the Dursleys send Harry . I've always thought that was odd , like You said -why bother ? They don't acknowlege his Birthday so why send him weird bits for Christmas. I wonder if it's to do with the blood sacrifice protection Harry has by being accepted by the Dursleys?? Dumbledore could have made them send him something ? Could be over thinking it and it's just to remind us how awful they are to Harry. 🤔🤔
