    Order of the Phoenix became my favorite book not for normal reasons, nah it became my favorite because everyone, including the teachers, HATED Umbridge with such passion that it made chapters such as Career Advice, absolutely iconic. Sprout giving Harry points for "passing over a pot", McGonagall telling Peeves how to unscrew the light thing properly, and Flitwick letting the firecrackers go off because "he did not know if he had permission", were all such great touches to add to the story that made it so funny before it got sad. It was a good balance. I also love McGonagall's determination to make Harry an Auror simply because Umbridge said he couldn't, as well as the iconic line "have a biscuit Potter". The students also were great but the teacher's made it for me.

    I was a bit baffled when, while describing Peter's transgressions, you missed that teency weency instance of Peter committing mass murder. Seriously, he slaughtered thirteen people with one spell just to make a getaway. It reinforces that Peter was both far more talented than most people realised (he was a Marauder) and also far more brutal. We've never heard of anyone else killing so many people with one spell before or after. His weak character concealed a man who was just as twisted and evil as any other Death Eater.
    And the most awful thing about it? He became that man while growing up with James, Sirius and Remus. He saw them bullying Severus and he liked it. He was attracted to the charisma and power of James and Sirius who never encouraged Peter to stop fawning over them, resulting in Peter's attraction to an even more powerful wizard Over time, Peter became a murderous monster and his closest friends never noticed.
    Dark, huh?

    • @IlikedpieCA
      @IlikedpieCA ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Was it officially confirmed it was only 1 spell? I don't remember too well at the moment, but honestly that whole "kill 13 people with 1 spell" seemed like an exaggeration of the event, especially fitting peoples' belief that Sirius had gone insane. Regardless, 13 people then a getaway, all while confronting Sirius, does show more skill than we would've thought - wether it was 1 spell or not.
      Hadn't actually thought of that before, he's usually seen as this "un-skilled, tag-along" member of the Marauders. Makes you also realize just how cowardly he must have been, to know that maybe he could have put up a good fight against the death eaters but ended up joining them out of fear anyway.

    Filch having no magic but having to clean up after and discipline kids makes it understandable why he might be grouchy, but he's definitely not supposed to be working around kids if he hates them. He's the wizard equivalent of the old teacher who you have no idea why they went into education (probably for a power trip) and reminisces about the 'good 'ol days' when you could beat kids/hang them in the dungeon. Quite realistic of some in education unfortunately, with the added wizard brutality.

    I recently read an opinion post explaining Percy's perspective as an awkward middle child surrounded by popular, successful siblings (Bill, Charlie, Fred & George) who is constantly trying to prove his merit from within their shadows. His family never seems to recognize his accomplishments, many of them choosing instead to constantly deride him for it, so no wonder he leaves as soon as possible and carries a massive chip on his shoulder. It actually made me sympathize with him.

      but Percy's accomplishments WERE celebrated, Molly was always so proud of him and comparing his siblings to him ('why can't you be a prefect like Percy, why can't you get grades like Percy, why can't you be perfect like Percy'). he was given a pet multiple times for his accomplishments, and his parents were supportive of him in pretty much every aspect until he turned his back on them. his siblings obviously don't hate him for his accomplishments, but there's bound to be at least a little bit of resentment (especially on Fred and George's parts) after being compared to him for so long. I'd love to read the post you're talking about, but as of right now, I can't say much of Percy's anger towards his family was justified.

    Personally, Petunia and Vernon are two of the most heinous characters of the whole series in my eyes. They neglected and abused an innocent child for years and years because of their bigotry. The Dursleys made sure Harry felt isolated in every possible way, and used their son as a weapon against him, causing Dudley to become a pawn as well. They never really apologized to him either, although no apology could ever make up for what they did.

    Rereading the books I agree more and more with Dumbledore in giving so many points to Harry, Hermione, Ron and Neville in the first book because snape was an abusive teacher who took so many points away from the other houses. No wonder Slitheryn won the House Cup for 7 consecutive years

    • @kiminimuchu__
      @kiminimuchu__ ปีที่แล้ว +42

      imo the problem was never the amount of points (they were 100% deserved), it was just the way they were delivered. Harry was in the hospital wing for several days, he even missed the last quidditch game, which also affects house points. Doumbledore had ample time to award the points. He could have told Harry right then and there when he visits him in the hospinal wing, but, nope, Dumbledore chose to do it in the most petty and humiliating way possible to the Slytherins, and that just feels wrong. The students didn't do anything to deserve that. Sure it creates a great triumph feeling from Harry's side, but when you look at the bigger picture it just feels wrong for Dumbledore to have done it that way.
      It's much much better how it plays out in year 2, with Dumbledore awarding them the points immediately after they returned from the Chamber. It's even more points, but you don't see anyone complaining about those because it wasn't done in a way that humiliated other students.

I'm actually not surprised they mistreated him their normal life was intruded on with something they thought was gone from their lives. Petunia got the message in a letter that her sister was dead yeah she was never fond of lily but still a bloddy letter saying oh yeah your sister was murdered heres her child. Their safety was comprised their child's safety forced to look after Harry and have their lives turned over. And then having to move because their safety was comprised their child was almost murdered yeeah I don't blame them. Yes they definitely should have treated him right but I kind of feel for them, Dumbledore messed with their live unfairly. I’ve always wondered what kind of protection the ring Horcrux had…. Besides the curse. The locket has in a cave… The cave has hidden…. Having to cut yourself to enter the cave…. The lake full of dead people…. The magic boat that takes you to the centre of the lake. Then you had to drink a poison that makes you want water…. Touching the water activates the dead people to attack. The ring must have had more.

    • @ryanlangman4266
      @ryanlangman4266 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, there were definitely a lot of protections on the ring. That’s what killed Dumbledore.
      Voldemort left it in the Gaunt house with a bunch of protective curses around it. Dumbledore went to the Gaunt house and found the ring. But when he realized it was the resurrection stone he put it on. Unfortunately Voldemort had put a powerful curse on it, so that anyone who wore the ring would soon die.
      He and Snape were able to stop the curse from spreading, but he was still going to die within the year. Since he was already going to die he told Snape to kill him so that he could become the perfect spy.

I think this past trama, probably helped cause his actions in the books.

A snivelling coward who willingly sacrifices all of his friends just to stay alive, he could have just hidden out after Voldemort fell for the first time but he actively went out and brought him back which means living a normal life in secrecy is worse than reviving magical Satan. The last scene could mean he doesn't want to kill Harry, or it could mean he's a coward who hesitates at getting his hands dirty and would rather have others do the bloodshed for him. I think so many people are like oh he was motivated by love so he protected Harry and thats why he was really a hero in the background. NO!!!! Im sorry but he wasn’t motivated by LOVE at all. He never Loved Lilly. He was obsessed with her and wanted to posses her, whether she liked it or not. When that didn’t work and he figured out he was responsible for her and her husband dying, then guilt began to eat him up. He “protected” Harry because he was guilty over his part in the death of his parents not because of love. Also I say protected but lets be honest he was horrible to not jus Harry but also everyone who wasn’t in his house. Neville said he was the thing he feared more than anything else. This is his teacher. Im sorry he isn’t a hero, he didn’t love Lilly but was driven by guilt. He may have loved her in his possessive way but the biggest thing was obsession which later let to guilt.
      Also the argument that he was mean to Harry so if Voldemort read his mind or other death eaters found out, it was a cover for his helping all along. Then why did he have to torture the rest of the school???? That wasn’t about the plan to defeat Voldemort, that was his way of being on top. He had been bullied as a kid so he was going to bully the kids so he could feel good. Im sorry it wasn’t like Neville was a threat from the start. Yet he was a bully from the start to him. (Probably because he knew VM could have chosen his family and didn’t so he resented him). Neville isn’t the only one. He is terrible to every Griffyndoor. We dont see it but it is stated how bad he is at the first banquet. Look at Hermione. That wasn’t just because she was Harry’s friend. It was because she was smart and probably smarter than him and he hated that. He was an immature child who did one thing right his whole life. He didn’t think of doing this thing right but did do it and I give him credit. Believe me the one thing he got right was a BIG deal, but it doesn’t overshadow all the bad he did along the way.

    The thing I always saw regarding Snape hating Hermione was because of this: he sees James in Harry, I think he sees Sirius in Ron (both are kind of jokesters), and he sees Lily in Hermione. He sees a Muggle-born witch, remarkably skilled in her year, and who is she best friends with? The representation of his worst enemy. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Snape was a good guy. I think he was a regular guy who did bad things, then did good things. He makes students feel inferior. I don't think Snape being bullied makes him understandable because he was calling muggleborns mudbloods at the time and was saying he wanted to help Voldemort. Honestly,he was probably bullied because he did those things

    Delores Umbridge is Kai Winn Adami from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, just without the religious fervor.

    • @macgyver42563
      @macgyver42563 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Umbridge does have fervour; but instead of for religion, it was for a broken government that was full of mostly corrupt individuals who either worked for a mass murdering lunatic or were ostriches, considering how far people like Cornelius Fudge shoved their heads into the ground shouting, "LA LA LA LAAAAAA!!!!! You-Know-Who cannot have returned!!!!!!!!!!"
      There were very few people, like Amelia Bones, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and others, who actually wanted to investigate the Voldemort thing but were blocked at every chance by the Ministry.

    Zacharias smith was a much more pleasant person in the films. He only showed disbelief in one scene and after that he haw much nicer. He cheered Fred and George's fireworks, congratulated Neville for charming padma, and happily applauded Harry's lessons before everyone left for Christmas break.

    I probably would have put Mundungus on this list somewhere. Also, your description of how Umbridge uses her authority to punish others for things she herself does and her complete hypocrisy over people even suggesting things aren't how she describes them reminds me of certain celebrities, politicians, and activists who constantly disparage anyone who questions whether or not their methods for "solving" climate change are necessarily the best ones, while simultaneously driving expensive sports cars and flying in private jets dozens of times a year to attend "climate summits" of all things.

      Dumbledore only turned against Grindlewald because of Ariana's death. And if running off to serve a Voldemort is bad imagine how much worse it is to attempt to *become* a Voldemort. Whenever and however people come back from that should be celebrated no matter how it occurs. Moral goodness doesn't only belong solely to those who never were bad.

    Snape didn't like Hermione because she was a muggle born. Don't forget that even though he turned out to be a spy in the end he still agreed enough with their ideology that the Death Eaters never once questioned him. And this was someone who was given authority over school aged children for at least 16 years.

    I don’t hate Lavender in the sixth book. While she was annoying, she just liked Ron. In the first five books, Lavender is always an annoying brat. “hErMiOnE i BeT yOu WiSh YoU dIdN’t QuIt DiViNaTiOn” says Lavender brown, with a literal crush on the teacher Firenze. Either that or I just hate divination

      I think that's a bit of a stretch. Fudge wasn't really a bad guy until the fifth book when he denies Voldemorts return, and mistreats Harry for insisting otherwise. We can't really blame Snape for that.

    I do agree that Snape was an asshole for most of the 7 books but in his defense he's a double agent working against a man so powerful and evil that only Dumbledore has ever even challenged him. If Snape gets caught he's just dead, there is no escape for him and I think Voldemort might have some questions for Snape if he was being kind to muggleborns and staunch light sided children and not biased in favor of Death Eater's children.
    Draco would be sure to write home to his Dad like he always threatened if Snape was "acting odd" around Hogwarts and Lucius would probably sell out anyone but his own family if it would get him into Voldemort's good books. Dumbledore is fine with the behavior because it adds to Snape's cover just so long as he never physically harms a student, but I wonder if he had words with Snape offscreen after hearing about his boggart.

    My top three most hated characters are easily Bellatrix, Umbridge, and Rita Skeeter.
    Bellatrix tortured Neville's (my favorite character) parents to insanity, murdered Sirius (my second favorite character), and killed Dobby (my third favorite character). No character I like is safe as long as she exists! Umbridge goes without saying. Skeeter I hate just because I feel she is the most relatable to today. There are so many media outlets that outright lie just to get the "story" out there that it absolutely infuriates me and I have just gotten to the point where I refuse to listen to any news source because I just automatically assume they're lying. I also knew people in high school that would intentionally spread false rumors and gossip just because they could and I hated that as well. Rita is so realistic that it's downright scary to me.
