- Don't get me wrong, I love the movies, but dang some of these characters are TOTALLY different.
But seriously guys, I love Harry Potter, the books and the movies, but sometimes I realize I remember the movie so much better than the books that it seems like the book versions of the characters have all but been forgotten. I wanted to make this video to try and highlight the changes that were made in them for the Cinematic Experience and basically just shine a little light on the books.

I think that the ‘fiery red hair’ line was taken a little to literally. Redheads usually don’t actually have red hair, it usually is more orange in real life. Still, it looks very nice! You did super well!

When she was looking at the actor she said that his hair was more of a natural red which I believe implies that she knew the way she made his hair was unnatural and that she did it on purpose
Yeah. I feel just describes a rather bright orange color. In contrast to other types of red hair like mine, which is a more orangish-brown color.
But they’re wizards, it’s not supposed to be that natural, especially since he’s the person in the trio that is most integrated into the wizard world.

With Hermione's school uniform the only thing off about it to me is that the skirt may be too short. This is the Wizarding world, one of the biggest things about it is that the entire style of it is very olden times (thanks to people who actually lived through those times still being alive and quite powerful politically), so I'd think that school uniforms especially Female school uniforms would be trying to cover up as much skin as possible so having a skirt that doesn't even cover the knees just seems a bit off to me for some reason.
Sounds right to me, and also I don't think the socks would be thigh high? I don't go to a private school, but most of the socks in girls school uniforms here only go to a bit above the ankle. Thigh high socks would be a personal choice, and it sometimes goes against the rules for the stricter schools. Then again, it is just socks, so it is not really important.

I would honestly enjoy the shit out of the harry potter books/stories, if they were made as a comic series with this artstyle. Not hating on the books or movies, but these drawings of the trio is honestly a masterpiece

@@kooromi7 actually, comics tend to be significantly shorter than books, especially if its adapting something. Most book pages have lines upon lines of dialogue/actions happening, but comics can usually summarize it in a few panels.
For example, you could have a page in the book where two characters are having a conversation that lasts around 2 pages. A comic could simplify the conversation to only a few panels through word bubbles.

I think they did well. Since you cannot do a live action version character on point how they are in a book. Especially with young actors (you cannot say a growing child to lose a certain amount of weight to have malnutrition....) and at that time post-production was not that far then it is now. I mean Daniels Mom would have stayed in their face doing that xD. Still, I like the drawn versions very much good portrait of em!

They could have at least given Lily Potter blue contacts so they‘d have the same eye color though... because it’s said that Harry has his mother‘s eyes... so even if they‘re not green, they could have made them the same color as Lily‘s.
Yeah, I have unkept curly hair. It's when you try to brush it that it turns into a frizzy mane. When you just leave it then it has nice curls. Hermione actually probably brushed her hair to make it nice - not knowing that's probably what made it such a mess. (At least in my experience.)

I never read the books growing up, I only ever watched the movies and Ron was always my favorite character. Then when I got around to reading the books when I was a little older, I was so mad about Ron's change in personality. He's actually cool in the books and gives no fucks and that's just something I would think you would wanna keep in the movies?? I get that he's supposed to be the "comic relief" but he's funnier in the books imo.
Ron was amazing in the books. He was funny, witty and extremely loyal, even if he and Harry did have a few hiccups along the way. But the director of the movies’s favourite character was Hermione, so she got all the cool things Ron said in the book, while Ron himself was reduced to dumb comic relief

hey just in case you didn't know lavender, the reason that harry's eyes were blue in the movie was that he had allergic reactions to the contacts and was not able to wear them. so it isn't really that bad that his eyes were blue because i at least would rather have daniel be healthy rather than having allergic reactions every time he had to go on camera.
They could've made lily's actress have blue contacts though

Ксения Старцева that's true... But the creatures aren't always there. Harry's in nearly EVERY shot, and I guess they might have been afraid of inconsistency. Like in Lord of the Rings when Legolas didn't have his blue contacts in for all his screen time so his eyes were different colors sometimes.
Actually they had planned on doing that but JK Rowling said it was fine as long as they said he had his mother's eyes.
Apollo Enjolras yeah I personally think that something like green to blue(Harry) or blue to green (Ron) isn’t a super big deal because they look so similar. It would have been a LITTLE different if say, Hermione had blue eyes because brown eyes are literally the opposite, regardless of the fact that eye color is kind of an insignificant trait.
Jk rowling said it was more important that Harry's eyes match his mother than having green eyes, so the actress for Lilly was supposed to have blue eyes as well. EXCEPT THE ACTRESS THAT PLAYED LILLY HAD BROWN EYES AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE THEM lmfao

Everyone criticises how the characters in the movie look but you can’t make carbon copies of them in IRL soooo... I think the did it alright?

The only one I had issue with was Delores Umbridge. From her book description they should have cast the actress who played the Slytheen lady from Doctor Who.
9:03 I will say in fairness to the filmmakers that, due to the lights on set and the way that film cameras work, you do need to apply at least some makeup in order to make sure you can read the actors' faces well, not to mention that the lights will make your face shine bright like a disco diamond if you're not careful.
The rest of everything is not really excusable tho.

In the Yule Ball scene, Hermione is described as somehow much more tall and elegant because of an absence of 15000 books in a bag slung over her shoulder! When you drew her, she looked quite hunched (I think because the back of the dress stuck out). But don't get me wrong, I loved the drawings!

One little thing I remember about Hermonie’s teeth from the fourth book is that a little before the Yule Ball started, Harry and his friends got in another fight with Draco Malfoy, and spells were cast around. One hit Hermonie that caused her front teeth to grow even larger than they were, and she went away to the nurse. While there, they used a spell to shrink her teeth, and they were only going to put them back to the way they were, but because the ball was soon and Hermonie wanted to look her absolute best, she had the nurse shrink her teeth to a very normal and straight size.

She actually didn’t tell the nurse to keep going, she just told her when to stop, and she just kept going. The Madame Pomphrey didn’t realize that wasn’t the original length.
Actually, one tiny mistake: Hermione didn't want her teeth to be smaller because she wanted to look good during the ball. She revealed that she asked her parents whether she can shrink her teeth with a spell before. And now an opportunity came when she had to had her teeth shrunk.
yeah i remember how she said she had asked her parents if she could shrink them with a spell, but they wanted her to get braces or something since they were dentists. when madame pomfrey or however you spell it shrunk her teeth hermione didn't stop her til they were smaller.
I get why the movie embellished their robes with their houses. Though not described in the book it really helps the viewer keep track of which house characters are in without telling and I think it helps the viewer subconsciously make an association of the character to their respective house as we get to know them. I do like that you went with a standard set of robes and the British school uniform concept though!
HyenaHarlie The thing that bothers me about not having house colors on the robes, is that even though the books don't mention any kind of identifier, Harry is still somehow able to instantly tell the house (and year) of every student he sees. It stands to reason that there'd be some kind of visual identifier.

When someone says “fiery red hair” they don’t mean an actual bright red, it means a natural human red which does tend to be more on the orange and coppery side. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely ADORE your drawings, just this one small detail about hair color xD as I myself am a fiery red head. Love your content

Yeah, on The Chamber of Secrets book cover (at least on my copy) there is an illustration of Ron and Ginny with orange not red hair.

The movies are such an offense to the books. They barely even tried to get the characters to resemble the ones described in the book.

I think they should have made her look as pretty as she is around the 4th movie. I feel like the jule ball kind of transcended their views of Hermione from tomboy book nerd to an actual woman(considering her being 14 and changing and stuff). Thats how I felt reading the books anyways

I understand your frustration but I think some of your criticism of the actors is unfair.
Daniel Radcliffe couldn't wear contacts; it aggravated his eyes too much. As for his face shape - that was never going to be exactly as described, ad they're obviously going to prioritise acting ability over exact looks. As for his hair - maybe his parents didn't want it being repeatedly died; he was only 11 afterall when the series began, and his brown hair is close enough. And, yes, perhaps it wasn't THAT messy - but again, the actor's comfort has to be considered too. We all know how annoying puffy, frizzy, messy, untamable hair is to deal with.
I would make the same points with Hermione. I do agree that the makeup wasn't needed, but as for her hair - if they consistently back-combed it and really messed it up then that was going to be very, very hard to maintain for the costume department, and very irritating for Emma Watson. Also, they can't help that Watson is naturally a very pretty woman - if they tried to use makeup to tone that down, it would have probably looked unnatural.
As for Ron, same points on his build and facial features, and, fiery red hair doesn't mean LITERALLY red, it's a metaphor for ginger hair - but I understand this might be a stylistic choice on your part. I do absolutely agree with you on his personalty though, it was really annoying :| I understand your frustration, I do, and I did enjoy this video nontheless! But I think you went way too harsh on the movies xD they're adaptations of the books, not exact copies. Yes, they did get several things wrong, but a lot of these were for reasonable reasons.
If you've ever read Eragon and seen the movie, however, I'd love to see you do this with Eragon, Murtagh and Arya from that! Eragon wasn't TOO far off and personally I felt Murtagh was damn near perfect on appearance and personality, aside from his scar, but Arya - ohh man, they literally did everything opposite for her. I can't even justify it with the choice of actress because she didn't even play the personality right.

"The uniform under the cloak" Well, actually, the plain black robes WERE the uniform. Since they pull the robes up over their heads, they are most likely whole. JK Rowling's sketches prove this too. So they can wear whatever underneath. The muggle school uniform and black cloak was movies only.
Here's the clothing shopping list for first years:
Three sets of plain work robes (black)
One plain pointed hat (black) for day wear
One pair of protective gloves (dragon hide or similar)
One winter cloak (black, silver fastenings)
There isn't much fan art with the correct Hogwarts uniform but there is some and it's wonderful to see.
One thing I do love about Ron in the movies is Rupert Grint's facial expressions.
I don't know what you mean about first-year Hermoine's hair in the movies. I think it looks quite fluffy and unkempt. The later movies, not so much.
It does but it also looks a bit more like straight hair when it's fluffy (aka my hair xD) so I get that she'd be pointing out that difference. They did an okay job at it but I think when hair is fluffy, unkempt, AND curly, it'd be messier than that.
And then the later movies just gave up I guess

5 years late, but there were no uniforms under the robes, they were full robes like Gandalf or Merlin wears, not cloaks with clothes underneath.
It comes up a few times in the story, most famously in Snape's worst memory, when the Marauders were bullying him and flipped him upside down, causing his robes to slip and reveal his underwear to a crowd of students.
Fred and George are described as putting their xmas sweaters on **over** their robes.
For a great reference of what the robes in the book are described as, the adults in Worst Witch are excellently designed.

It's really frustrating when people keep getting the school uniform wrong, even on pictures and videos that's specifically about drawing them correctly to the book description, isn't it?
If you want other great references, the pictures from old Pottermore got it right, too. They usually made very accurate pictures.

One thing you missed is that you gave Ron a normal looking robe. Ron wore hand me down robes so I was expecting more of a dirtier look on him. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed watching this video!

The robes only have red/green/blue/yellow lining in the video games. They buy their first robes _before_ they know their House. Unless they go back to Madam Malkin's for her to add lining to match their House's color, the robes are just black.

I remember seeing something a while back with the head cannon that when they get sorted, their robes/tie/general uniform will magically change into their house colors? So I’ve always just kinda stuck with that and assumed that was the best bet for what happens.
I think it would be so amazing if you would do a by the book for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, because the movie went sooooo far off from the source. I’ve always wanted to see more accurate versions of the characters other than the photographs in the book. Just a suggestion though :)

Nothing that puts them in muggle clothes is book accurate lol. Especially Ron. Wizards don't wear muggle clothes, and don't even know what clothes are "normal" or not! This was a consistent, running theme and joke in the books.

Honestly im still so disappointed about hermione in the movie. I have her hair texture. frizzy, poofy and curly. Its big and sometimes hard to control. I loved that hermione had my hair texture because girls in tv always have perfect, sleek hair and i always end up feeling bad. Im so sad that hermione just became like every other girl in the later movies. Its so strange they did that because hermione's hair is such an important attribute to her character.
Plus Hermiones yule ball scene was pointless because she looked the exact same.

They did have uniforms canonically, they were just simple black robes that they wore normal clothes under, and when not in class they also just wore casual clothes (at least to my understanding)
I think the school uniform was actually just the robe and hat in the books, could definitely see Hermione wearing a sweater, button-up, skirt, over-the-knee socks, the tie, and a pair of Mary Janes though.
