Changing the oil on your 3rd gen 4Runner for the first time? Or need a refresher on how to do so? Look no further. This step-by-step video will help you get the job done.
Thanks to Jason the Mechanic for the camera work and for approving this message :-)

You need to pay no attention whatsoever to all the “you shoulda…” Pep Boys comments! This is an excellent and quite comprehensive tutorial. Side note, what a welcomed change to hear one of these videos from a female voice! I honestly suspect that someone with no mechanical experience could be walked through their first oil change with your direction (and Jason’s) and would not only save themselves money and the hassle of the occasional prick attempting to screw you with unnecessary repairs, but most of all they could bask in knowing they did the job right!
Thank you for this feedback David, love to hear it's appreciated. Just doing my part to add some variety to the world of "4Runner Bro" content :-)
Thanks for making this video. As a girl who doesn’t know much about her baby it’s sooo necessary to have a video this well explained
Glad it can be useful for you and your baby 4runner :-)
Super quick, and to the point, thank you! Would love more content with this 4Runner and other engine fluid changes!

Excellent job - I love your video - thanks for making & sharing it.
Thank you for this feedback :-)
awesome video thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I personally use Valvoline full synthetic MaxLife in my 04’! Awesome video.
those are not as good as Pennzoil Platinum ultra, they already did comparison and it won.
great video
Amazing video
Thanks!
Sweet video proud owner of an 01 sr5 absolute beauty thanks awesome video
Right on!
GREAT VID. Thanks
You are welcome!
Came here to say thank you for this vid. Followed it to a T the first time and it’s the only video I ever needed for this.
And bonus points for mentioning to turn the wheel to the left. I’ve watched a few other vids on this just for fun and none of them think to do that. They just bitch about how hard it is to get to that filter. 😂
Glad to hear it was useful. And yeah it’s those little tips that made a big difference for me!
Make more video's on 4runner. Well done.
Anything in particular you want to see?
Did Wes Anderson direct this video?? Love it. Thanks for the help. Subbed.
Pro tip oil cap on hood latch. I learned this the hard way! Lol. No harm no foul
Great video! You made a boring task entertaining. OEM Toyota filters are equally as good, if not better, than Mobil 1's. For your 3G, use either YZZD1 or the longer YZZD3. Both are also way cheaper than Mobil's, especially if you buy in bulk. Cheers!
Thanks for this feedback, and yes excellent point!
I only watched to see if someone had a new method for removing a too tight oil filter. That answer is no 🤣 however, stayed for the quality of video. I need a Jason to replace my oil cooler O-ring. My back hurts. Nice work Pal.
Have you tried one of those heavy-duty oil filter wrenches?
@@kendellharbin the ones that cup the whole filter? That's what I ended up using.
What’s the name of the Acrilico thing I front of the hood and do you have the link to buy it?
Any tips for when the oil filter is really stuck in there? I have a wrench but I can't get it in there and twist it.
There are a few different styles of filter wrenches, some are easier to wiggle in there than others. It's a real pain, but theres always a way!
Good video. Just put the whole 6qt. And use the toyota oil filter! You can get away with the d3 instead of the d1.
Hey thanks. Tell me more about why you prefer the toyota oil filter?
Very good video. I know you briefly mentioned it, but you should have made more emphasis on the crush gasket which goes mounted on the oil pan bolt. Not using one will definitely cause an oil leak.
Thanks Mike, and yes good point!
Would this filter work on a 2000 4runner
you betcha
What happened to your gloves??
IF it's important for an owner to use "the best" oil, I have watched video lab comparisons of all the popular brands, and Mobil 1 is typically in the middle. Amsoil always seems to prove the best, with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum also right up there. Also, Shell Rotella-T full synthetic, with great results at a low price. Do a little research instead of automatically assuming Mobil 1 is the best (because of their massive advertising budget).
All valid points - I will take this into consideration! Mobil is usually my best *option* with what is stocked at my local autozone/O’reilys
Castrol Edge Euro or Pennzoil Euro L are some of my favorites
A couple of 3rd gen pro-tips: swap the drain plug with a Fumoto drain valve (my '00 Limited uses the F103S) so you can just attach a plastic tube (I think it takes a 3/8" ID?) to the valve and drain directly into a oil jug (no mess). You'll still need a new crush washer when you install it initially but, in theory, you never have to remove the valve from the pan again. Also, get a form-a-funnel and position it under the filter before you unscrew it--that way you can direct the flow of oil straight down thru the control arms and into your drain pan. Getting oil in my skid drives me absolutely insane but it's so much of a hassle to drop the skid--I too am a petite gal who usually works alone. Gotta work smarter not harder :)
Keep posting good shit! Makes me smile when I see women posting 3rd gen content.
These are some pro tips! Sounds like some good improvements for anyone whoae got a bit of extra $ for the process. Thanks for this :-)
@@kendellharbin the Fumoto is the easiest yet most useful mod I've done.. hands down. Best $30 I've spent on this moneypit lol. I've had one on my first car, a RAV4, for over 100k miles and never had an issue. It was the first thing I swapped when I picked up my 3rd gen in 2020.
:D
You need new valve covers.
A future video in the making!
YOu need to wear gloves when you do it next time.
MOBIL 1???
This must've been a sponsored event....
I see we have a skeptic :-) If I were getting paid these videos would be getting done a lot faster, haha!
