Absolutely stellar tutorial, thanks!
I bought a Gott 50 quart cooler in late 90s. I still have it and am using it today to keep food warm. It does that. You can get the same cooler for around $25.00. I don't use ice; I use bottles I freeze then use them. It works for days; it even keeps bags of ice, for drinks, frozen. Anybody buying a $200.00 cooler has too much money to spend. BYW if you do dump ice in keep in mind it's ice water that cools, not ice.
What’s the name of the Acrilico thing I front of the hood and do you have the link to buy it?
Reminds me of the Dr. Squatch brand who just rebadge soaps and jack the price up 5x.
Perfect
I gotta' have one with wheels.
Good stuff Kendall!!! Nice paddle but people pee in that lake.
that explains why it was so warm...
Guy who drills shit here: drilling metal correctly depends on a large number of things. Mostly the hardness of the bit and the piece, and what's called "speed and feed". In this case, stainless, is difficult to drill, but easy if you use a good hardened bit, that is the key. When you buy a bit in todays world, it will say on the package if it's good for metal or not. Get one that is made specifically for metal. They often are more than $10. Do not use grease like in this video. If you want to "lubricate", use a product called Tap Magic. Do your best to not let the drill bit get super hot, that is the other key thing. Just wait a bit between drilling to let the bit cool down. Push into it with moderate pressure. Go the full speed of the drill. Step up from small hole to larger hole, if you can, you don't need the step bit like in this video. If you have a number of garbage China type drill bits laying around you don't care about, you can burn through them gradually making your holes. Stainless will ruin them, but they will make progress within the first few seconds. Throw it out, Change the bit, and repeat. Sorry hope this makes sense, trying not to get too far into the technical weeds of it.
This is excellent intel! Never heard of tap magic, I'll have to give that a try. I've typically used the 'disposable bit' method, but am curious to learn more about how to protect carbide bits, etc since they aren't cheap!
Hello what L bracket are you using to mount? 😊
There is an L-bracket that comes with, but I happen to be using something made of trash and welded together. Long story...
I got a $65.00 Colman 25 years ago, and it still to this day outlasts my friends $400.00 yeti. Yeti sucks for the price.
I love to hear this!
I love your storytelling style. New subscriber here, great content!!! Thank you for sharing. It's taking me months to decide on a cooler for our global overland expedition.
Thanks for this feedback -- I am jealous to hear to are about to embark on a global trip!!
@@kendellharbin Don't be jealous, attack your goals one by one, go for it, we are not the first or last to embark on such journey. Having the vision and the passion towards your aspirations and goals are the true motor to all your adventures. It's hard work, challenging and lot's of planning, however, experiencing new countries and their cultures through over landing is wonderful and life changing. Best of luck!
No stinking sponges for dish washing! Horsetail ferns are best, contain silica, then toss! I like to spray bottle rinse with vingar/water mix.
Great tip!
Haha! Maximum fun!
Sick ride!
What basket was it that you found
I wish I could give you more specifics. It was the most unidentifiable thing you could ever find in a home depot...
Is there a link to that interesting eco bottle? I don't see it among the items in the description
Sadly Eco Vessel does not make that style anymore - but I went ahead and added a link to their most recent version in the description. Hope that helps!
its ingenious but isn't it a pain to unscrew the whole thing in order to change the filters? I'm guessing you do need to occassionally and regularly change the filters
Not really, same as any other Berkey. But I have had issues with mold growth if left untouched for too many days
I have the same year 4 runner, how many miles on yours? Great video by the way.😎🤙
210 now!
Ugly cooler?? I buy yeti cause they are the best looking.
your cool
This is wonderful! Thank you for providing the needed links; you ARE AWESOME! I've shared this wiht many friends now!
Hey thanks for the feedback! FYI - I have since figured out that adding silver into the build makes it more mold resistant. I'd encourage you to experiment with this and find your own solution. Otherwise, if left stagnant for more than 24hrs mold will start to grow
Awesome build! Do you ever wish you had more height on top of the sleeping platform to be able to comfortably sit up?
always - but I'd never trade that for all the storage space in the drawers. I only sleep in it when I cant for whatever reason just pitch a tent
Nice! So , I followed some of your plans(from watching the video) and others for my build in my 2001 3rd gen, rather than building support for that last part to sleep on I used hinges so it folds twice so I can get 6’, while also being able to put seats back in if I ever wanted to use them. Were you suprised how expensive the drawer sliders were? I ended up getting the heavy duty ones, since I didn’t want them sagging but damn spendy🤑..I didn’t do the back hatch window switch but that’s next. Do you have website or email? Love to share what I did..love the channel👍🏻
Just found this channel myself. I am curious as to how the fold out extension is working for you, also being 6'. Do you still have the low storage hatch in the front space? Where does it go when folded up? Is it sturdy? If you dont have the front part, does the rear section work with seats folded down, or do they need to be fully removed? So cool to see others are still trying these plans out.
I love to hear this! Sounds like a cool modification. Would love to see pics, you can email kendellbot @ gmail . com --- hopefully the robots can't figure that out! When I bought the drawer slides they were really affordable, but that was also right before the pandemic... so things were cheaper.
great video
Great ideas!! I was looking more for a diy water filtration system using cotton, charcoal, sand, etc for the filter part (cotton at the holes into catch/holding tank to keep out all sand and charcoal). Im not great at making videos but plan on making one of my trying it. Thanks for sharing this idea. Its great but one would need to keep buying the filters unless ones could be found tgat were rinseable or washable. Awesomeness. Onto designing and building mine.
Already loving this video thanks to the honesty regarding dogs, drones, and click bait. That cracked me up 😂 Looking forward to the rest of this and for ideas on how to convert my own 3rd Gen 4-Runner.
Glad you enjoyed it
I can't find your video showing how to do the rear seat delete -- is that posted anywhere? Thank you <3
I have not made a video about this - but I recall it being fairly intuitive and only requiring one wrench/socket size and less than 15 bolts overall
looks like an awesome trip!
Highly recommend BIG BEND!
IF it's important for an owner to use "the best" oil, I have watched video lab comparisons of all the popular brands, and Mobil 1 is typically in the middle. Amsoil always seems to prove the best, with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum also right up there. Also, Shell Rotella-T full synthetic, with great results at a low price. Do a little research instead of automatically assuming Mobil 1 is the best (because of their massive advertising budget).
All valid points - I will take this into consideration! Mobil is usually my best *option* with what is stocked at my local autozone/O’reilys
Castrol Edge Euro or Pennzoil Euro L are some of my favorites
Great video Ty so much guys!
I bought a yeti tundra . No regrats
Make it a toyota tundra and I'm sold!
Came here to say thank you for this vid. Followed it to a T the first time and it’s the only video I ever needed for this. And bonus points for mentioning to turn the wheel to the left. I’ve watched a few other vids on this just for fun and none of them think to do that. They just bitch about how hard it is to get to that filter. 😂
Glad to hear it was useful. And yeah it’s those little tips that made a big difference for me!
Loved the video. Cool and informative. Nice build and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback!
If you’re going out into the backcountry for several days, hunting or fishing, then pre-chilling any cooler really is the only option. Using those freeze packs (the ones with lower freezing point than ice) as a base layer also makes a huge difference. Of course making sure all your food is pre-chilled/frozen is key. Again, this is for serious outdoor scenarios where gas station ice is not an option. If you just need a cooler for parties or weekend car camping, you don’t need a rotomolded cooler. But following those rules with any cooler, will get you through a whole weekend nicely. I was given a Yeti, and though it works well, and is well-made, I’d never pay full price for one.
all excellent points!
I watched the excessive videos and 18 months ago I bought a 2005 Sienna. Spent 2 summers out west visiting 6 states and a dozen national parks. However I’m at the point where there are some areas I couldn’t get too in a minivan, so I’m looking at 4Runners now for the 4wd and extra ground clearance.
Right on! The Sienna really offers so much, aside from that backroad access. I've got my eye on the new land cruiser these days... a pipe dream I cant afford, but still fun!
Interesting, lots of great information in this video ... Thank you
Thanks!!
Great video!
Since this was posted a year ago, how is the awning holding up now? Do you leave it on your vehicle all the time? Any problems with the bag, zipper or awning fabric? Do you have to treat the fabric at all (waterproofing, etc.)?
All great questions. It's held up extremely well! I've got it mounted 24/7 and the only noticeable wear and tear is fading to the color of the fabric.
Nice video, Like your vibe and all the information you shared 👍😇
Why thank you!
Excellent review. I think it is overall best to have a secondary smaller cooler just for the drinks as well. (main for food)
Totally agree - if you have the space this is a good method
mostly being made in the USA is a critical and important part of the Yeti experience... some of us don't fancy the idea of having a Chinese sweatshop made cooler for our outdoor experience.
What about you chinese sweat shop made phone? I guess we all must pick our battles when it comes to consumerism...
@@kendellharbin well, I actually own a Samsung made in Korea ... but that said, some things we have no choice .. prime example is Mac computers .. but when and where I have a choice, I DO NOT buy made in China when I can avoid it..
Because it’s stainless and doesn’t have silver in it like the berkey’s do, how do you address microbial growth?
This is an EXCELLENT question. Many months later I have encountered this issue and found it requires frequent cleaning. Definitely poses an issue. I will report back whenever I find a good work around or solution!
You could throw in a UV light that's made for fish tanks. Put it on a timer.
What's the width of the platform

Cheers! Great to hear your thought flow and see the build. I'm preparing my fore runner to house two large brindley boys (and myself) and haven't been seeing a lot of video's taking them into account!
TWO DOGS! Woof - good luck to you
Excellent job - I love your video - thanks for making & sharing it.
Thank you for this feedback :-)
Any tips for when the oil filter is really stuck in there? I have a wrench but I can't get it in there and twist it.
There are a few different styles of filter wrenches, some are easier to wiggle in there than others. It's a real pain, but theres always a way!
i totally agree i fell for the marketing like an idiot. Yeti didn't work any better at ice retention than my Coleman. the Coleman is a third of the cost of what i paid for the yeti .i hang my head in shame. i really research the products i buy and i deff screwed up buying the yeti. its not worth the money....peace out
"Hang my head in shame" -- Ha! we've all been there. Thanks for your honesty
Rtic has 2.75" of insulation and Yeti has 2.25" they are different blanks. FDA also recommends keeping fridge at 38f (below 40, as 40 is the not in the safe) Rotomolders will often use very similar design queues. None of these coolers are currently under $200. Buying 2x$159 coolers (because of lack of warranty) within 2 years, vs buying a $250 cooler for 10 years....
Damn inflation
I got a Yeti half price . Truly a great cooler. But I would never spend the money if it was not half the price.
