made this today! didnt have 5 spice powder so the chicken tasted a bit sweet, but my god it looked EXACTLY like what you order from a hawker stall! thank you so much!!!!
I made this yesterday and it came out perfect. Followed the recipe exactly but doubled everything to make twice as much. Super tasty, tender chicken. Thank you ❤
Seriously thank you for this simple recipe. It’s now one our top 3 dishes in our house. I didn’t use food coloring and used SKINLESS chicken thighs and added a little bit of cornstarch and it still came out so crispy and juicy. SO DELICIOUS.
Just as a friendly reminder, i remember seeing or hearing somewhere a while back that if you spray cooking spray on whatever utensil that you use for sticky liquids like honey, it'll slide right off the utensil's surface.
Had to make some dietary restriction changes, didn’t have some stuff: black vinegar for cooking wine and soy sauce, honey instead of sugar, no five spice, added hoisin sauce for kicks. Seemed to work, tastes great, looking forward to making it again! Thank you!
Hello @TheCookingIsland this dish caught my attention on my recommendations and it looks so good I wanna try it =)) I listed all the ingredients but i have a problem, here in my country we don’t have cooking wine =/ So do you have any alternative ingredient other than cooking wine or is it okay to not put? Thanks hope you have a good day
Hiii, thanks for asking! You can use apple juice as a 1:1 , or use half the amount of rice vinegar as a substitute for cooking wine. It provides similar tangy, slightly sweet notes, perfect for Asian dishes like char siu. Both add mild sweetness and acidity, making them ideal for marinades for char siu. :)
Can you marinate the chicken and let it on fringe the previous night and cook it the night after? Basically can you let it be on fringe for 24 hours or its gonna get bad?
Thank you for watching! Absolutely, you can totally swap vegetable oil with olive oil! It adds a delicious flavor twist and some extra health benefits too! Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Happy cooking! 🥳
Hi, could you try the hoisin sauce? I think it is the good substitute for oyster sauce 😊 But you may adjust the sugar because hoisin sauce is more sweet side 😄
You add "onion powder" twice, but the two powders are of different colour. Is the other powder garlic or ginger? Then: stab as "many 'what' as possible" with the fork? Or do you mean "as 'much/as often' as possible"? Also, the tray of the air fryer has a non-stick coating, so there is no need to waste any aluminium foil "to cut down on cleaning".
Sorry, it’s my typing mistake, the other powder is garlic powder. You can use the fork to poke the meat as often as possible. Lastly, as my experience, although the air-fryer has non-stick coating, it takes me a lot of effort to clean the tray after using without the foil. You can give it a try 😄
@@TheCookingIsland Thanks for the quick reply. Tip: I use soap-free steel wool pads, they work like magic to clean greasy, sticky stuff from surfaces. Yet, they are less aggressive than the green side of regular dish sponges as they don't scratch non-stick coatings. These pads are almost infinitely resusable thus saving miles of aluminium foil.
@@einundsiebenziger5488 Thank you for the awesome tip! 😊That sounds like a fantastic way to tackle grease and stickiness without any scratches! Plus, being reusable is such a win for the environment! Can't wait to give those steel wool pads a try! Thanks again for sharing!

Hi, thanks for watching and leaving the comment! Because I couldn't find the fermented bean paste in my local supermarket, I can't add it to the marinade in the video. Char siu sauce is even better with this fermented bean paste. If it's available in your area, please use it 😋

Firstly omit the gloves there is no need for them But I’m making this tonight with some noodles and steamed broccoli. 🥦 My daughter is coeliac, so I’m using g free soy, and used fresh garlic, ginger etc, Juts put it in the fridge to marinade its 8am. So by tea time it should be ready My chicken is skinless, but it does look better skin on.
The spiced Coca Cola could add an interesting twist to the flavor profile of the dish. I also have the "Fried Chicken Wings Recipe with Coke" 😋 Let me know how it turns out! 🥤🍗
wont be as good as with thighs, but at least the charsui flavor is there and you can use your imagination. the issue is there will be no skin caramelization. if you worry about calories, it means you not working out hard enough or dont know how to manage calories in other areas, just stick with thighs imo 😁

Hello! Would just like to know the difference of the onion powder. The first one is light color and the second one is more yellow.
Hi, so sorry for my mistake! The second one should be garlic powder.
@@TheCookingIsland Thank you
Was the 2nd spice garlic powder? It said onion powder for both. Just asking so I know. Thanks!

hi. what can be a close replacement for the cooking wine? as cooking wines are not available here in the middle east
Hi, thanks for asking. You just leave it out, or replace with 1 Tbsp of fresh lemon/lime juice. I think it still tastes good as it is 😉
Use 1 spoon of ginger juice. Press grated ginger with a spoon in a strainer. It makes meat tender.
how do you make your rice? looks so good
What is a good substitute to Oyster Sauce? I’m allergic to shellfish 😢
