fiveredpears Thomas Sowell himself was born in one of the poorest, most crime ridden cities in the world; he worked hard and is now reaping the benefits. It is very possible to reach a state a prosperity from a previous state of poverty, especially in America. But it is the type of people that Sowell is describing that will hinder the beneficial results of free market capitalism. I think Sowell said it best, "no society has ever thrived because it had a large and growing class of parisites living off those who produce."
I hope that you'd agree to the idea that a society over-emphasizing on maximizing its growth would not necessarily be able to thrive as well. Even if the distribution of the produce is "equal", ..growth, rather needs to be "equitable" in distribution.
Pratik Gautam Why does growth have to be equitable? So long as everyone, or at least most everyone is doing better what does it matter who has how much wealth. What would you rather have a society where some people are wealthier than others, but most people have food, water, sanitation, modern medical care, energy, telephones, internet, cars, a home, television, computers and etc. Or a society where everyone is equal, but live in shacks with unreliable food and water, no modern sanitation, medical care, cars, energy, modern communication, and a whole host of other things we take for granted. Another thing you need to consider is that people will move in and out of economic brackets throughout a life time. People who are in the bottom 10% won't likely be there 10 years from now and the same could be said of the top 10%. Most of our poor are just young people getting a start with a whole life to move ahead and immigrants who are usually poor to begin with.
Timothy Dannenhoffer Who is wealthier than they “ought” to be? Bill Gates? Jeff Bezos? These men have done amazing things for people - Jeff Bezos for hundreds of millions, Bill Gates literally for *billions*. They’ve certainly made my life personally better, and I’m guessing yours too. I am begrudge them nothing, and find it rather pathetic that someone would, resenting out of envy. And of course we *all* know envy - someone will always have something you desperately want, but cannot have. But to resent out of envy is sad. You know, people usually credit the late 90’s boom to Bill Clinton. I call this “Wrong Bill Syndrome”. It’s confusing correlation with causation. I’d say it’s far more likely it was about Bill Gates. He initiated development of Windows 95. Before this, you had DOS and Windows 3.1, which were never going to make computing mainstream. Windows 95 made it so anyone could use a computer, and allowed AOL and internet browsers. It was this that led to the internet boom, which is primarily what led to 90’s prosperity. Bill Gates was largely responsible for an entire economic boom. Why begrudge him anything? What harm does it do you? Fact is, if people weren’t able to acquire such wealth when they merited it, the world would be worse off, not better. You’d mess up incentives to do the things men like this have done.
My kids will never touch DNC rat poison welfare money or entitlement. They are working harder than anyone else @ school and universities.Their aim is to contribute to the society.
The Foundation of a Family is vital people!!!! Welfare destroys ones ambition to succeed. It is a temporary safety net, not a lifestyle. The Welfare system is catastrophically abused in America.
Can you provide any evidence that the welfare system is catastrophically abused? On the contrary welfare programs like snap and TANF are proven to reduce crime, poverty and be an economic positive for the communities in which these programs are implemented. As Socrates said, so many years ago, for a democracy to be sustained it must be paired with a welfare state.
"On the contrary welfare programs like snap and TANF are proven to reduce crime, poverty and be an economic positive for the communities in which these programs are implemented."Not only has crime gone up among those in poverty, but children born in single parent homes have increased to over 70% since the 1960s. The differences in views are clear here. Mr Sowell's visions is based on fundamental principles and how they affect reality, whereas O'Banion's visions is based on immediate concrete data right before her eyes. Thus she's not able to see the large picture. Her view is perceptual, his view is conceptual.
Exactly, although equality of results continues to be applied in mixed systems with the intention of complementing equality of opportunity in a market economy, it largely only substitutes it. This begins the regression towards our loss of liberty; more regulation, more taxes, until we find ourselves in an all too familiar situation.

Dr. Sowell is a living legend. I do hope to one day meet him in person and thank him for his contributions to this world. It's a tragedy that we don't hear more of/from him.
Professor Sowell has a gift of explaining difficult ideas in everyday terminology. He utilizes an abundance of real-life examples - sometimes from his own experience - to prove his points. It's always a pleasure to read or listen to Dr. Sowell.
"Whether they're below the poverty line or above it, they're still in the bottom 20%." Tells you everything you need to know about their position. It doesn't matter if everyone's doing well; if anyone's doing better than the others, then that person needs to give "the bottom 20%" their money.
@@lgbnz I wasn't talking about alternatives, I was just saying that capitalism has created a direct connection between someone's life and how much work they can do, and that if you don't work, you can't live, and it's crazy that people are ok with that.
@@lgbnz Would you work for a company that is bankrupt? So why work for a nation that is the same? Boomers have squandered the opportunity of innovation with an over abundance in laws, but not only that, they have completely dissembled our means of manufacturing and already sold off half the companies to foreign investors. Why should I sacrifice my life for my country when my country is being sacrificed before me and that I have no control over it without being publicly vilified for my thoughts and the colour of my skin? Even if solutions were offered, do you honestly think the reigns of power will be passed along willingly? The solution is to remove international copyright law so that at least SOME countries can compete fairly with China. But that's not going to happen, fractional reserve banking keeps you or anyone else from doing anything with its supreme rates of debt and inflation. Boomers are yet again protected from the onslaught of AI when it comes to decimating the job industry. Because of their inept ability to use technology, the younger generation thus has to be pulled back down into their little bubble of reality where comfort is king and progression is immigration.
The easiest way to destroy a man is not giving him any opportunity. That's what welfare is, opportunity. I've lived on welfare in Europe when I was a student, and the very reason why I succeeded in my studies is the welfare, because I could dedicate 100% of my time studying without having to do a part time job to survive. When I graduated I found a nice job and quit welfare, and to this day I am still very grateful to the state for the help I received. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have succeeded so well (no pun intended) without it.
"They are still the bottom 20%" That's utterly meaningless, they "could" live like royalty and still be the bottom 20%. Being the bottom 20% is not a valid reason to argue for welfare.
The 20% logic is akin to a dog chasing its own tail. There will always be 20% on the bottom, so this woman’s job is secure forever. It also makes her feel like a self-righteous savior of the poor. Welfare indeed is a great deal for her.
@@asdfasdf4176 The point was that "the bottom 20%" will always exist, as will "the top 1%" but neither of these groups are monolithic. People move up and down the income ladder in America all the time. The majority of the people in the bottom 20% of income earners 10 years ago aren't there now. There are different people now. But this woman can continually advocate for "the bottom 20%" as though they're a never-changing group of people stuck in perpetual poverty when that simply isn't true.

If this debate took place today: Thomas Sowell: "Welfare is a problem for the black community." Leftist: "RACIST!" Thomas Sowell: "But I'm black myself." Leftist: "SELF-HATER!"
God bless Thomas Sowell.Instead of handing out welfare checks they need to hand out birth control. Birth control is a big step to avoiding the welfare plantation. In addition, any families who are are on welfare should be taken off if their children are missing school or continuously failing in school.
+reptilia5 I agree. Also, it shouldn't be so hard for childless individuals to get vasectomies and tubal ligations if they never want children. Condoms have a significant failure rate, that is why so many men seek a vasectomy. I heard that the state of Colorado had been making IUD's easier to get for teen girls. According to some calculations, for every $1 the government of Colorado spent on IUD's, they spent $6 less on teen pregnancy. www.nytimes.com/2015/07/06/science/colorados-push-against-teenage-pregnancies-is-a-startling-success.html?_r=0

"Were talking about a small percentage, 12%." That didn't age well. Sowell's last comment about subsidizing illegitimate children would make a brilliant mic drop.
She even admits that she finds it irrelevant if her 20% are above or below the poverty line. Leaving out how this "poverty line" is calculated (it's nonsense), she has admitted that her only goal is to keep subsidizing people regardless of their standing. As far as I'm concerned she has no more leg to stand on. How very convenient for someone in her position that she'll always be needed to shuffle money around. Someone in her position should be looking at how to end the very existence and need for someone like her, but as we can see that is not the case.
He was like, 50 years old in this video. This man is a patriot and an American treasure. Mr. Sowell if you ever read my comment, thank you for what you've contributed to this country and world.
Mr. Sowell you, good sir, are amazing! Thank you so much for your intelligent, logical, articulate expressions. I wish more people would hear and heed your words.Thank you!!!!
Depends on your definition of racist. It's an intentionally nebulous term, created by Leon Trotsky. Some would call Sowell a racist for even suggesting that races exist and there are differences between them.
American, that's not the point. Everyone knows what is and isn't actual racism. The point is that the term is *intentionally vague* so that it can be used to malign with a broad brush everyone who doesn't adhere to the party line. The technique was employed quite vociferously during the Obama administration. For the first term, literally every critic was called a racist first and asked questions later.
Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman on the same panel debating economics. Either man alone is a force to be reckoned with, but together, an insurmountable dynamic duo. I have so much respect for both of these great men.
This is such a touchy subject. Growing up I looked at government assistance as a stepping stone to use when facing financial hardships, and not a life-long tool to distract you from your goals. Especially if you have that type of mindset! It’s hard to look for work with an empty stomach especially if you keep facing obstacles and hurdles over the years that’s out of your control or direction . That’s what nutrition provides, energy! I admire Mr.Sowell,, but he fails to realize an alternate reality! And because of this, I get confused by his point of views.
The problem is one of incentives versus intent. Consider this little fable: An animal lover is driving down the road and spots a poor hungry dog. He picks up the dog and takes it back to his one-acre estate. He throws a picnic the next day and while grilling hamburgers sees the dog chase a rabbit across the yard. To the homeowner's horror, the dog catches the rabbit. The homeowner frees the rabbit from the dog but begins to feel a bit guilty. The dog was only following his instinct and just wants something to eat. As a consolation, the homeowner gives the dog a burger from the grill. Five minutes later, the dog is back at the grill with another rabbit in his teeth. Moral of the story: Intent is fine, but the world operates on incentives. The intent of welfare is help through tough times. The incentive of welfare is to subsidize irresponsibility and that where Sowell and I see the primary problem with the scheme. FYI, I worked in the welfare system for more than 30 years.
@@fzqlcs you say the “world” and not “the Powers That Be.” Speaking from experience, I wouldn’t require government assistance if I was the director of my own life!!
@@martinesejour3361 If being the director of your own life is your true goal, you will not be on welfare long. Good luck, my friend. The incentives put into place should be a primary concern at all times, whether one is dealing with the "powers that be" or your best friend.
What Sowell is pointing out, that the system dis-incents people from getting into the work force and thus perpetuates the problem was first pointed out by Milton Friedman in an essay he wrote with his wife in 1943. None of this is new; smart people like Friedman saw the system was formed on the premise that, all things being equal, a person would rather work than not. The so-called Puritan work ethic. It may have been true in 1625, but it clearly wasn't in 1943 and still isn't true today. Assistance needs to be available for those who cannot work; i.e. disabled either mentally or physically. But in my view the current system perpetuates the underclass and helps prevent them from moving up the ladder. Friedman's proposal for a Negative Income Tax, postulated nearly 80 years ago, makes sense. Obviously what we're doing today isn't working; look at the increase in the last 60 years in single-parent households, unemployment levels by demographic, the crime in the ghetto, or any other measurement you care to see. The real question is why we're still talking about this and not doing something about it.
It wasn't true in Jamestown in 1607 when the colony starved under communism. They had to implement the famous Work=Eat model after communal plots failed to have anyone properly work the land.
" Obviously what we're doing today isn't working"... it's working for the Federal Reserve/Satanic bankers. As long as we let them print currency on their facade, things have to get worse. Where do the Illuminati bankers get the money they lend us at interest, taxes, mercenary bank enforcement military? They pull it out of their asses for a gourmet diet for the 99% to be paid in blood.
Marc Thomas Yes. This is an episode from Milton Friedman's "Freedom to Choose" series. The black economist is Thomas Sowell (he's my #1 fav economist), and he's only in two of the episodes - this episode and one other.
If you want to end racism towards African Americans in this country, African Americans need more representatives like this. If people weren't presented with examples like gangster rappers or athletes as the template for African Americans, but instead the majority seen were as smart as this guy, racism would be a thing of the past.
it's funny how you can tell by their eyes and facial expressions (without listening to the words they speak), how one is a bright mind and the other is an occluded ideologue. We need more people like Thomas Sowell.
The Elephant in the room is touched on by Sowell, but never named. I realize this was an economic discussion, but a social element needs to be addressed, and that is stigmatization. Through institutions such as religion, historically, out of wedlock births were rejected. Then came the "do what you feel" 60's. The destruction of the black family was a two-pronged attack. First, the legitimizing of out of wedlock births, and second, the replacement of the father with the welfare check. Take the term"Nuclear Family". It is often derided as an anachronistic concept these days, but try to understand it's meaning. The atom is the basic building block of matter, comprised of Protons, Electrons, and Neutrons (for example, Father, Mother, and children). From there it bonds with other atoms to produce molecules, as other families (atoms) bond with other people and families, molecules of community are formed. From there, more complex structures are organized into various elements (cities, states, countries). Without the basic building block of the family, this is all quite impossible. And please take note, when I refer to a "family", I am not implying a strict interpretation of a heterosexual couple with children. Gay, straight, Grandma or Grandpa as head of the household, It doesn't matter. What matters is they see themselves as an unbreakable and supreme entity, Beholden to no man or government.
@Ricardo Herrera You just took it from my mouth, spot on! That was the time and reason when devil was unchained! It was an "everybody´s dream" to sleep around and to not procreate. The consequences are beyond repair, the whole society is crumbling because people have lost the then "unalterable" certainties - family, God, gender a person´s role in society, just to name a few. But the matter is extremely complex, of course. Anyway, the pill should be mentioned and you hit the nail.

Her next baby daddy had a good job. After living with her for a few months, he quit his job, moved in with my niece full time and is happy to play video games 16 hours a day with a free roof over his head and free food. What people FAIL to acknowledge is that kids today have a lower standard of living vs what most people had last generation. Many kids today don't care about nice cars, don't want to travel, don't want things... They HAPPILY LIVE on a phone or video games with NO goals. Let me repeat that, because it sounds pathetic to most, they are HAPPY because phones and video games give them the ability to have these things virtually. I cannot tell you how many times I have been to this neighborhood and been called a sucker because I work! Guess what, her little teenage brother, my nephew, got his 18 year old girlfriend pregnant. My niece and nephew now live 2 apartments apart in the same neighborhood and he brags on social media how awesome his life is. No job, but has a 2 bedroom apartment and plays video games all day long! Mr. Sowell is right, she doesn't endorse teenage pregnancy, but she does subsidize it!

Left leaning people don't see this huge problem. We "raise"! No you subsidize failure.
Thomas Sowell is one of my heroes. Never disappoints, ever.
fiveredpears Thomas Sowell himself was born in one of the poorest, most crime ridden cities in the world; he worked hard and is now reaping the benefits.
Timothy Dannenhoffer
Who is wealthier than they “ought” to be?
Bill Gates?
You’d mess up incentives to do the things men like this have done.
wealth is created, not distributed

What box do you live in?
"black people went from being slaves to free people and then went back to the plantation in the 1960's" one of the dumbest things i have ever read lmfao!
Minimum income is the obvious solution and absolutely superior, only fucking imbecile morons don't understand the solution is that easy.

Thomas Sowell is an example of a great intellectual hero. Love and respect!
Yy3ahhh!!
The more I listen to this man, The more I wish I would have heard him earlier - especially when I was in college.
***** exactly. that is what is shown on the statistical figure 28 years later, it proved Sowell's point.
+Bjørn Hagen and to think liberals claim the welfare reform passed during bill Clinton's years was BILL CLINTON'S BILL.
hastard a republican sponsored the bill.....................a republican. Clinton VETOED the bill TWICE before signing it.
+Bjørn Hagen IF anyone here understands the long standing hatred of the family and the influence of parents over their children vs the virtuous state, then one understands the actual test bed here. This runs through thousands of years of collectivist philosophy starting at least back to plato. Loyalty must only be to the collective and anything outside of this is not virtuous. it takes a village to raise a child. As Thomas Sowell would say to people that have studied this................................YOU KNOW THE MUSIC.
Chris Whited Well dickhead, unless Republicans had a veto proof majority for welfare reform he still signed their shit.
"You simply subsidize it." What a great way to end that!
Milton chuckling here and there is priceless. The fact that nobody started screaming insults at each other is fantastic. Also something from the past.
“You are subsidizing people to fail in their own private lives and to become more dependent on the handouts...”. Sadly true. Once again TS, hitting the nail on the head
The best line is right at the end when he says that O'banion doesn't need to think that because she subsidizes it. Zing!
Ned Loughrey Exactly!
Dr. Sowell is a living legend. I do hope to one day meet him in person and thank him for his contributions to this world. It's a tragedy that we don't hear more of/from him.
There have been very few and far between people as brilliant and insightful as Thomas Sowell. God bless this man!
Professor Sowell has a gift of explaining difficult ideas in everyday terminology. He utilizes an abundance of real-life examples - sometimes from his own experience - to prove his points. It's always a pleasure to read or listen to Dr. Sowell.
"Whether they're below the poverty line or above it, they're still in the bottom 20%."
Tells you everything you need to know about their position. It doesn't matter if everyone's doing well; if anyone's doing better than the others, then that person needs to give "the bottom 20%" their money.
I love this man, and respect him immensely. He is a gift to black, white and every other living person.....
We need more Thomas sowells !

Lol no. Fuck that. Capitalism has made us heartless.
You'd think even the most heartless person wouldn't want more starving, homeless people wandering the streets.

"They are still the bottom 20%"
That's utterly meaningless, they "could" live like royalty and still be the bottom 20%.
@@chickflick "There will always be 20% on the bottom" I mean, the condition of the bottom can be improved tho.
@@asdfasdf4176 The point was that "the bottom 20%" will always exist, as will "the top 1%" but neither of these groups are monolithic. The problem with Dr. Thomas Sowell’s work is that he is very biased. On his books, he always states the problems that come from the left. So conservatives have never passed anything that he can critique on, ever? This is coming from someone who is neither left or right. Just my observation from what I’ve seen from him so far.
This is just as relevant today as it was in 1980.

Thomas Sowell: "But I'm black myself."

Sowell's last comment about subsidizing illegitimate children would make a brilliant mic drop.
milton friedmans reactions are gold.

I've only been following Mr Sowell for a short time and he so obviously projects an aura of calm wisdom.
Whelp the current state of the black community should tell you just how effective welfare was in helping. Lol
Is this from a longer debate? what is it called?

But the matter is extremely complex, of course. Anyway, the pill should be mentioned and you hit the nail.

Many kids today don't care about nice cars, don't want to travel, don't want things... They HAPPILY LIVE on a phone or video games with NO goals.
