    Read, read, read, read Dr. Sowell. Disagree with him, attack his positions, formulate your personal philosophy against him. My favorite aspect of Dr. Sowell's work is that it is grounded in logic and backed by evidence. Weigh his logic, weigh his evidence, confirm it or cast contrary evidence it. All the while you will learn how to think, how to write, how to own an opinion and be proud of it.

      Hell yes: I don't care if you subscribe to his philosophy (I disagree with him on some minor points: he has spoken favorably of our health care system, but it's garbage for those who have no tools to negotiate with doctors), he argues them with reason, logic, and passion, the later would be useless without the first two. He demands a proper rebuttal but rarely gets any...just propaganda, ad hominem, and emotional arguments that never get the to root of the issue.

    My family still prospered in the midst of segregation in Houston, Texas in the 50's-60's, we had separate bathrooms, water fountains, yet we owned a three bedroom home, had outstanding schools, black business flourished. When LBJ so-called 'War on Poverty' went into effect, black business dwindled and our best teachers were sent to other school districts that were mostly white. Liberals sabotaged the upward mobility of blacks, I witnessed it first-hand. Right On Sowell!!!

    It is also worth noting that 1960 was only 15 years after WWII and seven years after Korea. Most single-parent homes in the post-war era were so because the father was killed in combat, not because of illegitimacy.

    • @SaulOhio
      @SaulOhio 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Tom Forsythe Which makes the growth in illegitimacy that came AFTER the 1960's even worse, since that didn't have the war excuse.

    • @dragknuckle
      @dragknuckle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Jimmy De'Souza OK, it is fair enough to say that they weren't all casualties of war; but up until the 60's, single motherhood was usually caused by the death of the father. War definitely inflated that number.
      Mothers having and raising children without ever having been married was rare.

    • @nathantong2136
      @nathantong2136 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Tom Forsythe In response to that I'd ask if this percentage in single-parent homes grew proportionally for non-Black families. I don't recall an overwhelmingly larger proportion of Blacks serving in WWII and Korea versus non-Blacks, so if your analysis is true then White families should also see a large proportional jump in single-parent homes.

    • @nathantong2136
      @nathantong2136 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +dragknuckle But the point here is that Black families are seeing a significantly higher proportion in single-parent homes versus non-Black families. War casualties result in more widows for both white and black families (unless you have proof that more blacks served in the military or did more dangerous missions). War casualties does NOT explain why the Black population has a higher single-parent family ratio than white families.

    • @dragknuckle
      @dragknuckle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nathan Tong Read my initial comment; I did not mention race, or relative statistics.
      While I have already conceded on this thread that war deaths were not the primary cause of single motherhood in 1960, the war did cause an increase in the number of single mothers.
      My point is that, prior to the War on Poverty, single-motherhood was usually caused by the death of the father, or his incarceration. It was relatively unusual for a never-married woman to have and raise a child.
      Note: I am Tom Forsythe, I just end up signed in under a different user depending on which computer I use.

He said that when tv became common we were suddenly able to see more abundance in a few minutes of commercials than most will experience in a lifetime. We saw what was not available or common for us. He said prior to experiencing that we knew our neighborhood and most in our neighborhood were of a similar economic level. This is relevant to this discussion.

    my only problem with the remark about single-parent homes, is that this figure rose dramatically for white families as well. and we need to be able to determine as well the effect of the sexual/moral revolution on these numbers.
    in terms of its relative importance in the black community, sure, I believe the fact that the figure for blacks is at a vast majority of 75%, compared with the figure for whites which is less than half, must have a dramatic effect on the norms of the black community.

      +Ivory Johnson I would love to hear your reasoning for that. I've seen the numbers he's referring to before. He didn't make them up. The system literally makes it economically irrational for a single parent without an education to get a low-paying job. By the time they pay for child care, transportation to and from work, and other expenses they have less money than if they stayed home and watched the kids and collected their EBT, AFDC, Medicaid, housing allowance, etc. That's the fundamental problem with welfare; there is no rational way out for the truly poor. Friedman pointed that out in the 1940's, for crying out loud, and proposed an alternative that made perfect economic sense, yet still it remains in place. Why? Because the elites are perceived as 'taking care' of the poor and continue to get their vote. Not all of the elites are doing that maliciously; most are just ignorant. But the damage is the same regardless of the intent. This is a subtle form of slavery in place to perpetuate power for those perceived to be the bearers of this 'gift'.

      buckfan1969 Being on welfare can never be compared to 400 years of slavery in no way, the damage caused by slavery is unmatched, I've had cousins on welfare for a few years but eventually they got off, found jobs, furthered thier education and moved on from the welfare system, some of my cousins remained on welfare, but their kids graduated from high school, went to college attained degrees and found jobs, so there are a plethora of scenarios I can give you, but here's the Atom bomb, none of my cousins, friends, associates etc, were able to get out of the hole that was caused by 400 years of American slavery, all of them had to ask the whiteman for a job, but cars and everything else made by the whiteman or Asians, However, I'm not an advocate for the welfare system, but let's not equate it with 400 years of American slavery which gave white people a hell of a head start in every area of endeavors. The number one devastating blow for Black people caused by 400 years of slavery is that we didn't get the chance to build our own military fully nuclear capable and this has put us at the mercy of other people. Again, I don't hate no group of people or system as long as we respect each other and don't abuse any system.

      +Ivory Johnson Never meant to say welfare was as bad as slavery; it's a different form of slavery. And yes, some people have risen above the welfare trap, just as some slaves escaped the plantations. But the system has built in incentives to perpetuate dependence on the system. Sowell's point is the entitlement system has seriously damaged the family unit among the poor and built a wall, if you will, to make it much more difficult to raise one's own standard of living. It's not a racial thing; it's an economics thing. All the numbers support that thesis. Sowell is probably the iconic example of a poor kid pulling himself out of poverty and realizing his goals. He's probably also the exception that proves the rule.

It's amazing what happens when we remove God from government and society. divorce and lack of family are the direct result of what we see today. people put their selfish ambitions before family, and sustainability for future generations. Ok. I'm not sure how this is related. Sowell basically argues that welfare incentivizes people to stay in what he deems as a "bad" family setup (e.g., single parenthood). This doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. I mean, the US welfare state isn't robust at all compared to other countries (e.g., most of Europe).
      If the argument were based on data, we should look at the rates of single parenthood in countries with robust welfare states and see if there's a causal link between this and higher single parenthood, but this seems to fall flat based on what I can tell just by looking at plain statistics. For a naive comparison, we could look at Finland (robust welfare) and the US (not as robust), and we'd see that single-parent households don't have a positive correlation with robustness of welfare. It would be necessary to look at a larger sample of countries to really draw conclusions of course, but my big problem with Sowell is that his arguments seem to be mostly based on his own assessment of ~vibes~ rather than actual data, and in general, I don't think it's wise to draw policy insights from this. @@ParadiseLordRyu

    This guy attributes the number of parents in a black home to the welfare state?? He uses 1960-1990 numbers during which time the divorce rate in America doubled (from ~10 in 1000 marriages, to ~21 in 1000 marriages) a factor that isn't political. Also during that time the incarceration rate nearly tripled (from ~110 in 100,000 to ~300 in 100,000 ) a factor placed squarely in the hands of Ronald Regan's republican party. To place the blame for the number of parents in a home on the 'welfare state' is laughable, and a perfect example of how republicans ignore important and pertinent factors to suit there narrative and, on a more individual level, to sell books. I don't know anything about Thomas Sowell, but I can guarantee he makes the majority of his income on book sales. Be right back, checking his bio......yup, stopped counting at 30 books.

    The one problem I have with Sowel's argument is that he doesn't consider the population increase. It's true what he says about the difference of Black people now and 30 years ago, but you have to consider population increase when you compare now and then.

    • @joeydoherty368
      @joeydoherty368 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steven Walk His percentages may not have been so drastically different if the population was the same back then. In the end, the reason conservatives struggle so much with minorities is that they tend to spend more time complaining about poor people being lazy, rather than talking about ways to help them regardless of how it benefits their agenda. Until they do that, they'll always struggle to gain support from the people they ridicule.

    • @Tsundemo
      @Tsundemo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Joey Doherty That's not how percentages work in the real world.
      With populations you can only have 100%(By this I mean, 100% of blacks will continue to be 100% of blacks purely because you cannot create a percent out of nothing) so if a study were to come out and the data were to show that 30% of Mexican Americans will die in a car crash and nothing were to have changed you would expect the number to stay the same. Now it might waver a bit but with a large enough populous you can get accurate enough results. But if you add in a changing factor such as implementing seat belt laws you would expect this number to go down respectively right?
      Now, this is where your argument fails. We implemented a lot of affirmative action laws, which are meant specifically to help blacks get ahead in life, but in the time that we started implementing them we watched things decline, such as black people's desire for higher education. And of course this is just one example that we can look at when we can turn our heads to see that the single motherhood rate has gone up drastically, crime statistics, etc. These are all things that we should have eliminated/at least reduced with the laws that we implemented.
      But they're not.

    • @joeydoherty368
      @joeydoherty368 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Doc Merci He's right about the problems with liberal policies. I just bieve the percentages might not have been as high earlier in the 20th century. The less people in the Black community, the more chance someone has of making it out of their situation.

    I grew up in racist Ohio during the 60 and 70'. I was a student at Ohio State University and work part time to help pay my college expenses. I got called "nigga" and "faggot" so many times by white people that it actually became discouraging for me. My firt job was at Mc Donalds, i worked the window and French frys. I always worked the Friday/Sat closing shift. Bigest McDonald's in Columbus Ohio at the time and we closed at 2pm on weekend's. Long story short, Im wallkin down high s t at anout 2:45 am after a busy Friday nite, ive closed and balanced my window and drained and cleaned the French Fry Rack. Its a giant deep fryer. So Im walking home, tired , covered in French fry greese, but happy because i did my job well and management noticed my professional ism and hard work. Im maybe two blocks from Donald land, walkin dont the street still got my uniform on and i see a van approaching. It speeds up pulls right to the curb and just as they pass someone throws a bucket off water on me while everyone in thhe van yells NIGGA NIGGA NIGGA!
    At first i was angry the quickly very sad thinking to myself "it dosent matter how hard i work or how good a job ive done, there will always be someone wanting to hurt me and impead my attemps to progress because when they see me the first thing they see is my brown skin". Yea, ultimately it is all about self-determination, hard work and beingb the best at what you do but the song never changes, from Macdonald s to Armani, for my time period it was all about my skin. That was the hardest part, always being the only black person inthe room and not goin crazy dealing with all the crazy. For example, if i had a c note for every time some one said to me, " if i wasnt lookin at you by the way you speak id have no idea you were Black". Really, wow what a surprise .
    Things are better now but lets not pretend that racism does not exist. And even more importantly an education is paramount.
    Without it, well if you're a Black man you better have some athletic skills or entertainment talent.

    Pick your dates and your context, and you can demonstrate whatever bias you have. From the mid 1970s onward, the neoliberals gained control of the economy and crushed what was left of unions, and labor could no longer make demands based on the increasing productivity of the work-force. Real wages remained flat while productivity and corporate profits climbed. What climbed as well was long-term unemployment and with Bill Clinton administration, NAFTA began the shifting of US production and jobs to foreign locations. Clinton also began the hopeless deprivation of children by ending the ADC (aid to dependent children) that was part of the New Deal and Great Society heritage of the US. LBJ's programs to help the poor were sacrificed to the US aggression in southeast Asia. With Reagan began the bloating of the military budgets and austerity for the domestic side of the budget. Local services, dependent on federal subsidies, yielded those benefits to the arms merchants and war-mongers in a process that has grown worse, more punitive to most Americans, especially blacks to this very day. Prof. Sowell knows all this. He is a tool of the ruling elite.

    • @Bellantoni
      @Bellantoni 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      (1) The real crushing of labor took place in the 1890s. David Montgomery's book dates the Fall of the House of labor to 1925- there was a resurgence afterwards but labor never held firm sway in this country. Neoliberal economics is mere regression to the mean before the New Deal and those times (though not problemless) didn't have the rates of family desertion and crime we see today.
      (2) Outsourcing really got under way in the 80s and 90s but we see the figures of our present ordeal begin to rise during the 60s and 70s.
      (3) Clinton didn't end AFDC but replaced it with TANF, which is different to be sure as it compels (if that's the right word) people to get off TANF when AFDC didn't. The Great Society was doomed to begin with because it focused more on job training than job creation.
      (4) Reagan may have grown the military budget but you can't compare it to the expansion during WWII and the military is actually where most of the innovation in our economy comes from, if anyone is creating jobs its them- not military jobs mind you but spin offs from all their new innovations.
      I think I agree with you that Sowell attaches too much importance to blaming everything on welfare. But as to the grim signs of the times, I think Sowell is nearer the truth than say Chomsky.
