I live in rural Appalachia and there was a guy here who literally made it his life mission to be a real world Santa claus. He spent all year collecting toys and preparing for Christmas and when the time came he rounded up volunteers to create a big line of trucks to haul the toys and follow him from community to community and give them to the impoverished children in the area. I volunteered two times, and there were a lot of kids whose parents were on drugs and this was literally the only thing they were getting for Christmas. It was very emotional for everyone involved. The rest of the year when he wasn't getting ready for Christmas he did things like go to nursing homes and visit people whose family wouldn't visit anymore. Unfortunately he passed away a couple years ago due to cancer. That was probably the largest funeral in our area's history as it was opened to the public. As we drove to the cemetery for the burial literally every vehicle we passed pulled over out of respect. I've never seen it be 100% like that. Even as he was dying of cancer he did everything he could for the Santa project until he was physically incapable. He was a devout Christian and a big believer in 1 Corinthians 13. He did these acts of charity because of his immense love for people. If anyone deserves to be canonized as a saint i would nominate him. RIP Mike Howard

It broke my heart to hear about the little girl's mother get murdered by her father! And the one where the little boy who wanted his dog and brother back! 😭
Ok, I get that this defeats the point, but the injuries may have supported her death, and while that’s awful, RIP ME WATCHING AT NIGHT, I hope that it wasn’t just murder from the father, my hopes is that it was something that at least the children didn’t go through,
for example if she died of disease. Regardless, beating a wife or anyone is assault and he should be arrested.
@@TheFrostyCow if he dares to his wife, a woman, a human biologically weaker than him, not sparing a thought about her condition or children, what’s stopping him from murdering her? in my country alone, 9 out of every 10 households suffer from domestic violence, and all of those cases get ignored by the police until the wife is finally beaten to death. what about other countries in the world? poor mothers die from domestic violence everyday. it’s not unthinkable. it’s not from a disease. it is what it is.

I was volunteering an event that had a Santa. This dad had his toddler twins in line for the pictures. I'm close by and hear him say "this is going to be awesome!" He places them both in Santa's lap, they both start screaming, and he's just standing next to them with the biggest grin and double thumbs up. They stopped crying once they were back in the stroller.
I wish that the parents quit forcing their kids on Santa's lap for a picture! Who wants a picture of a scared and crying toddler on a stranger's lap?! If the child is comfortable to do so that's fine.

Not creepy, just sad. My dad was a school fare Santa one year, and I helped out as an elf. One kid asked for her friend who had an almost certainly fatal brain tumour to get better and that was all she wanted. Utterly broke both our hearts.
EDIT: Had a couple people enquire after the boy with cancer, he's made as full a recovery as he could. My dad was part of the fundraising team for him at the time, meaning he got to go to America for the specialist treatment, I think he's actually past the five year relapse point now. I guess miracles do happen sometimes...

I've been working as a professional elf in the PNW for the past five years. I work with several Santas doing tree lightings, parades, private parties, news interviews and the like. (I started out in the mall.)
One of my main responsibilities is screening kids' requests. We have code words and hand signals for situations like this. I get asked for help more often than I care to admit. I'm a mandated reporter, and these things are never taken lightly or ignored.
I've also been asked to help get rid of cancer/terminal illnesses in siblings, parents, etc.
The selflessness of some sweet young children who quietly ask for nothing but healing for someone else while their kind little faces stare up at you with tears in their eyes haunts me.
Hearing about those children who wanted their loved ones healed from any type of illness breaks my heart! What do you or "Santa " say to those unselfish little ones who asks for the impossible?
It’s people like you that keep my hope in humanity alive. Thank you for your hard work, even with how terrible it gets sometimes

It depends on the child and situation.
I usually ask the parent clandestinely while I hug their child, and a lot of times they will nod or shake their heads when I look at them. We say that we will try our best, and sometimes (especially if the loved one has already passed) we remind them that they will always live on in their hearts, that they are very loved,and that we are proud of them.
Huh. Hand signals, codes, and making someone a mandated reporter is actually a really good idea... and incredibly heart-breaking that it’s necessary. Kinda tears me up a bit. I’m a mom, and sometimes I look at my kids having fun, laughing, and listen to hours open they are with me, and I think about all the children that don’t have that. It’s not all sunshine. Childhood/being a teen is hard enough without having stable support, a loving house.
If you decide to have a child, you at least owe them that. Many “parents” infuriate me and some break my heart. Not to be crass, but a parent should mean not simply the ability to f*ck and get knocked up. It’s more than that.
As for the children asking for someone to get better/come back, I understand that’s not the parents fault, and my heart hurts in a different way. My ranting was about the “can mommy stop leaving me alone for days; I get hungry” type requests.
Where do you work? I’m in Seattle, I assume it would be close by.

My (used to be) 6 year old son had been singing a song he made up all during a week back in 2014. I don't remember all of it, but it was along the lines of, "Oh marry is you good, Oh marry is you good, Marry Marry Marry (and he would continue singing marry over and over for about 5 minutes". My mom, his grandmother, was named Mary. When i heard this i thought he missed her since we live in different states and i thought it was cute. But then he started crying one day and through his tears he sung this song. I asked what was wrong and he kept singing. The next day i got a call from a doctor saying Mary had passed away from Lymph node Cancer. My son is now 12 and when i ask him how he knew, he doesn't seem to remember anything happening and he doesn't even remember having a grandmother named Mary. Still one of the craziest things to ever happen in my life.

My sister said when she was at my grandpa's old house when she was 7ish she walked up the stairs and the wall opened up and revealed another staircase that went up into a white void and she heard voices... And then it closed, she is 15 now and still remembers it like it was yesterday (still gives me the shivers)

My boyfriend once was one and I was one of the elves there to watch and help make it more realistic for the kids. And this one disabled kid about maybe like 8 was born without a leg, and he asked Santa for a new leg for Christmas. It make me break out into tears and I was sent home for the day. 😭😥
My dad is santa at the local mall every year. Last year he came back home in tears. He said a kid wished for his brother to defeat cancer. The thing is, his brother had already passed away and he wanted him to beat cancer when he came back to life.

My birthday is near Christmas too and I always really appreciated my Mum waiting until later to put up the tree and making sure that any party and presents were totally separate. These days I feel less precious about it but when I was a kid it was a big deal because few people in my life were that considerate.
I guarantee that at least one mall santa got 5-8 year old me asking for stuff for my tractor ('65 IH Cub Cadet 100) I still have the tractor, and got some attachments, it is pretty much a miniature tractor, very torquey, very fun, right now I'm 14, yes it was a barn find, and it's still rusty.

My grandpa played Santa at a bunch of places but my favorite was when he volunteered at the pediatric place (a physical therapy place for kids) that I went to. He had his own room to play Santa in and the therapy dog was always sneaking off to be with him. He owned his own suit so they didn't have to rent.

Im not going to ever tell my cousin (5 years) that the mall Santa is actually an actor-
When I was 8, my ADHD was really bad and I went to the Mall with my mom. We didn't plan on going to see Santa but I got distracted and wandered off from my mom. I ended up seeing Santa and he asked me what I wanted. I started crying and I only said "I want my distractions to go away so I can find my mommy."
Let's say Santa was confused af- It's not as bad as before but I still wander off sometimes.
I went to Disneyland with my family when I was 5, because I had a peritonitis (got wrongly diagnosed with normal stomach ache at normal hospital, my mother acted like a Karen as always and demanded to go to regional hospital and got into emergency surgery) and I had to stay in the hospital for some weeks, so my parents decided to spend Christmas in Disneyland (Paris) to cheer me up. We went to se the Santa there, who apart from English and french spoke Spanish too. Now, I'm from a village in Spain, in the Northern region (Catalonia, we speak catalan, a different language than Spanish). So when I sat with him I started talking spanish (which my parents told me Santa talked). He asked me from where I was from and I said from a city near Barcelona. He the procced to freacking ask me if I lived in * my wierd village name * in perfect catalan, and I told him what I wanted for Christmas in the same language.
I asked my parents about this later and they still don't know wtf happened there, they were more surprised than me (well I thought he was santa so not so surprising). We think he happened to pick up our accent in the cue and he must have known someone that lives in my village cause we have a carachteristic accent.

I work housekeeping at a mall and had to go clean Santa's piss up off the floor after he passed out from getting to hot and urinated all over himself while unconscious. He gave the single to his elves that something was wrong and they went to help him get outta there telling the kids "that mrs.claus was on the phone from the north pole and needed to speak with Santa for a few minutes" but as they helped him get up he just flat out hit the floor. Kids were terrified, lol
one time I was at a mall during x mas. I was with my dad. My little cousin told him what she wanted. Then my family used the rest room. Then after the final kid walked away. He started to cry. I asked what was wrong and said his acting was great. He told me a kid wanted to live until he got married. Apparently the kid had cancer and was going to die in a few weeks at the time. I gave him a hug and told him how much joy he put into kids when he talked to them. It cheered him up. I hope the guys okay

My "Santa" story: I do this volunteer thing at places for kids with mental health problems and mental disabilities. I'm only 15 at the time and I'm very short and thin so most of the workers were surprised when I volunteered to be the Santa. This only happened a year or so ago. So I get to be Santa every Saturday (some kids couldn't talk a lot of the time because of things that came up). One girl who I remember, I think she was around 7 or 8 and this girl came whenever she could and would show me drawings she made. One day she asks me for "rainbows and rainbows for her big brother" I tell her something like ok, do you know what type of rainbows or why you want them. She said the most heart breaking thing ever. This 7 year old girl told me that her dad got very angry and started hitting her brother for saying he was gay. The next week me and all the people I told brought in a bunch of rainbow things and when she walked in she cried. We went a picture to her family to make sure they knew what was happening. The dad got furious.. Child services was called and the little girls dad was taken away from the kids. After that I found out why the girl was there, her dad sent her there for crying when her brother and mom got hit, and being too energetic. This girl had ptsd at the age of 7. But, we made her life better I think.

Kind of unrelated, but the ice cream man in my neighborhood was a Santa impersonator in the off-season. I'm pretty sure he was part of that "Council of Santa" thing.
He was a real nice dude, and we always joked that this is what Santa does on his vacations because he always wore this gaudy Hawaiian shirt.
Its been a good decade / decade-and-a-half since I've seen him, and he was getting pretty up there in age, so I can't imagine he's still alive (unless he really is santa) so RIP tom. You really hooked me up with those poppers and blue raspberry sodas my guy.
I remember asking for happiness one year. My parents were fighting, I was getting bullied, my stepmother started showing the signs that she was a narcissist, my mental health was dropping, etc. It was a really bad year and Santa’s expression was kind of dumbfounded when I asked. He said “I don’t know if I can do something that big” and I started crying. In the middle of the mall. I was 9. My dad went off on me as soon as we got into the car. He was really pissed. One of the few times I’ve actually been grounded. That Santa’s face is something I’ll never forget.
Remember, don't make assumptions. Maybe some of those kids' dads just grounded them. You could ruin children's lives that way.

My grandpa used to dress up as Santa every Christmas eve. One year when he walked in my little cousins started crying and screaming because they thought that Santa had killed our grandpa and was breaking into the house to kidnap them.

At 4:47 when they start talking about birthdays being overshadowed by Christmas I felt that because my b-day is Dec 29 and gets overshadowed every year
I get that part cuase like 3 days after chritmas and go new year but I didnt get story with tree it's a tree bot going effect anything. But like with you after chritmas or 2 day befor it or on it I get that but like she was talking tree ruining it that makes no dang sense I get if they dont have money but the tree ruins the birthday I dont get that.

Geez. Belding mi is my old home town. Not surprised in the least. And considering that this happens more than you'd like to think in small towns like that, you dont have to worry that you've outed who it is.
While I love my home town. That friggen 80s mall killed the town and even to this day its slowly decaying into a black mold filled leaking fire hazard.
