      brenics77 not a mechanic but i bet it’s one of those I can fix to dammit now I gotta go to autozone, only to find out that advanced has it cheaper so you drive across town through rush hour traffic only to find out that the way you normally would go is blocked off, so now you have to take an alternate route. You were going to go out later but now you must finish the job only to realize now that you have officially wasted your day on a job that you thought you could do in said time.

    About 11 years ago I was helping a friend on my course at film school and we went to visit an eccentric guy in the middle of the Shropshire English countryside who had his hand in about everything conceivable. In one corner of his grounds surrounded by over growth stood a black Mercedes’ 500E. It was armour plated as it used to belong to the President of Egypt. “You can have it if you get transport,” he said. I kick myself now, as at that time organising that was beyond my means. But my god that would have been a steal!

    Usually the antenna breaks because they dry out causing the plastic gear strip to break. You can purchase a replacement kit online. Also make sure you lube the antenna when it's installed so it doesn't break again
    I also recommend painting the grille black once you find one, it makes the car look 10 years younger and freshens the front end nicely.
    Also don't forget to purchase the antenna grommet that goes between that black cover and the quarter panel. One day I'll own one of these!

    The hood star from any of those W126 cars would fit perfectly. The reason the wiring is different, is because the 500E was probably delivered with a factory car phone, which uses a different antenna from a non-phone equipped car. The dash vents really are quite tricky to remove. The hood star and grill screen are also relatively cheap to buy new.

      The belief in "German Engineering" is simply something peddled to fools who are susceptible to marketing campaigns. Those of us who've actually spent time paying the bills to keep Benz or BMW products on the road are less starry eyed about the whole thing. They are wildly over-designed, needlessly complex vehicles. That they are less reliable when there are 5 times more things that can potentially go wrong is simply Murphy's Law in action. It's common sense. Nobody should be surprised. Somehow though...Lexus products seem to hold together.

    • @EvilScorpionfly
      @EvilScorpionfly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@RealityIsTheNow not really, most "German cars" in America are built in America. Not by Germans. BMW, Mercedes and Audi have factories in America.
      The German cars built in Germany are actually generally reliable, and hence most Europeans prefer German cars. In fact, our most unreliable German car we personally owned (our BMW X5) we found out was built in America, go figure. Also, the general public don't maintain their cars properly, and people in Germany meticulously take care of their cars, which by in turn makes them break down much less often. If you're in America though, I'd generally avoid German cars. Unless you get yourself one that you *know* is made in Germany, also, sourcing parts in America is a lot more expensive

      @@EvilScorpionfly Actually, no, that is completely untrue. I'm speaking as someone who's been a fan of MB for many years. The vast majority of MB models for example are made in Germany. My E320 was made in Germany. The first transmission was covered under warranty. The second one was not. So was the old E300, I traded in on it. They were both extremely problematic cars. I've got a 2005 E320 CDI that has been excellent in terms of powertrain...and a real mess in terms of the ridiculous amount of electronics and sensors all over the rest of the car. The passenger seat cannot seam to decide if there is anyone sitting in it here lately...and makes and annoying sound that cannot be shut off except by buckling the belt on an empty seat. I've put nearly 150k miles on the CDI over the last 10 years, and it has been in the shop about a dozen times. The MB models assembled in the US are mostly the SUV's. NOT THAT IT MATTERS where it was assembled. If you honestly believe that imaginary lines on a map make up for engineering failures, then you should probably give up now lol. The reason Europeans think German cars are reliable is because they are comparing them to something like a Fiat or a Peugeot...which is frankly a joke of a car...and obviously German is better than that. ANYTHING is better than _that._ The real reliability comes from Japan. My wife has been driving our Lexus LS430 for going on 20 years now...and it has never, not once, broken down in any way. I'm not exaggerating when I say its been perfect. On that note, my 2002 Ford pickup has been nearly flawless in terms of reliability as well, though it's only got 130k miles on it, as it mostly gets used to haul things around.

      @@RealityIsTheNow It is not about "imaginary lines". The work ethic and sheer class of education and attention to detail is something Germans take a lot of pride in and are fantastically good at. I come from England and study in Germany, and honestly, I can say, the uni education here (I study Maths) makes every other country's look like a joke in comparison (Japan, Russia, China have similar levels of Engineering and Maths, hence you'll also find Japanese cars good). You can even take it down to simply primary and secondary education. People who'd come for exchange in England/America from Germany would say everything they did in our syllabus in Science and Maths they did back home 3-4 years ago, and I *know* the American education system is even worse than the British one. Calculus is compulsory in middle school in Europe, Optional in American High school and English High school, for an example. Ironically, Calculus is compulsory for British run international schools, which I find pretty hilarious. This is just an example.
      Ironically, the 2 countries with an incredibly good work ethic (Japan/Germany) also produce the best cars. And ultimately, luxury comes at a cost of some sort of reliability, having air conditioning in your car means it can fail, having a rear-view camera means it can also fail, having electrically adjustable seats mean it can also fail, doesn't mean you can't continue driving the car when those things fail. The Germans don't do very good electrics, the Japanese do that best, but most of their cars are mechanically sound and Japanese cars aren't *generally* anywhere near as luxurious as their German counterparts (less features, lower power engine etc).
      That being said, most companies nowadays figured out that having cars that last 20+ years isn't good for business, so most companies will have a couple parts in their cars basically "rigged to bust" (plastic manifolds, etc). If you spend enough time in forums, you'll know which parts to exchange for an aftermarket part, and you're set.

      RealityIsTheNow I disagree with that. Sure It can get expensive if you only get repairs and maintenance through the dealerships. Mercedes are designed to be worked on. don't know if you'll read this Tyler, but look at the wires on your vehicle for the antenna, take a picture and when you go back to the salvage yard for the other parts, look to see if they are the same number of wires and color. You are right, you can snip that connector off, give yourself as much wire as possible. Then you can solder the wires and shrink wrap the wires together, red to red, black to black, etc. You CAN DO IT! or you can have the Wizard do it for you, but totally possible/fixable

      Probably the V8 from the 500E have more torque than the transmission and rear diff can held. That’s in case they are the same as in the 400 and 300 engines.

    • @MBussard45
      @MBussard45 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The transmissions used in the cars were slightly adapted for each respective engine, so the transmission used for the 5.0L in the 500E would have been modified to handle the extra torque compared to the 4.2L V8 used in the 400E/E420. As for differentials there are a handful of different ratios and I think two or three ring gear sizes. The diff in the 500E I think was unique to it, 210mm with 2.82 ratio and ASR, though some 400E/E420s had ASR as well. Either way, anything that needed to be changed to handle the more powerful engine was changed.

    As an owner of 95' W140 500SE, I can say that "mercedes quality" is not a myth, these cars were built extremely tough and being maintained properly - may last for decades (which mine actually does). But the problem with sport sedans like 500E is quite simple - they've been worn out by their owners reaaaaally badly. Poor maintenance, lack of respect to aged vehicles, cheap parts - these are constant satellites of cheap owners of classic cars. And looking at your 500E, I may suggest this situation is a pretty common thing even worldwide, not only in 3d world countries like mine.
    But nevertheless, I still consider old merces from the 90's as the most "mercedesish" Benz cars of all time. Because they combine relatively "modern" technologies, nice look and very nice performance with reliability, which allows you to drive them daily without any significant issues.
    Cheers!
