- The Mercedes 500E is the quintessential 90's Mercedes. It's Mercedes before AMG. In order to build the world's sleepiest production sport sedan, Mercedes, with the help of Porsche, installed a DOHC, 32-Valve 5.0L V8 Engine from the 500SL into their E-Class midsize sedan. Making 325 HP and 350 lb/ft of torque, the E500 did 0-60 MPH in 5.4 seconds in 1992. Top speed was electronically limited to 160 mph. The suspension and brakes were upgraded as well from standard E-Classes, using parts bin items from the SL500, SL600, and S600. Today, thanks to excellent dynamics, timeless design, and exceptional build quality, the 500E is well regarded among collectors, drivers and enthusiasts alike.

The E-Class was introduced later in -93 when the third and the last facelift W124 was published and they added letter E in front of model type names. For example pre-e-class 500 was 500E and E-Class 500 was E500. Same goes with diesel models: 200D became E200D etc" -comment

i love these old mercedes, it's aging so well, pity they never made manual transmission for it.
Yea, pretty sure that's because they didn't have one that could handle the motor and driveline. Early R129s had a stick, but only on the 6's, not the 8's or 12's.
The 500E only had a automatic tranmission, but in Europe you can find both diesel and gas W124 models with manual transmission. I have a '91 300D with a 5-speed manual, and I have to say, it is a joy to drive...
Actually, the transmission in the 500E is excellent. I mostly drive it as a manual moving it up and down through the gears. That way I can listen to the exhaust note without having to floor it too. Mercedes has always been about automatics. Same as Cadillac and similar.
Mercedes-Benz M119 engine is a 4 cam engine. I'm surprised that the owner did not know that. You were classy not to call him out.

I know that it is...I just wasn't expecting that question. I had been reviewing all the stats on the car just in case (weight, F vs. R balance, etc.) he asked me something esoteric. I didn't expect that one and froze.

What a well maintained vehicle, that interior is spotless.
Thank you. I do have to get the wood in the console fixed. It has some minor cracks. I had the headliner replaced and they did a phenomenal job. They start to sag from the glue getting old. I also had them redo the door pockets. The glue there makes the edge come lose. There was some wear on the driver's bolster that they replaced as well. all minor stuff but makes the difference when you care,

Still a great driver after all these years. AMG even put the 6.0 into a couple dozen vehicles with an output of 380-400 HP.

This is SO a dream car. I bet it's expensive to maintain, but man.. So many years after, and it still looks SO freaking cool. ..and it has a cool story. ..and it has a great engine :)

I owned one of these in the late 90's as a daily. Still one of the best highway cars I've ever driven.
Speaking from an engineering standpoint, this is literally the best car of all time. Doesn’t matter where you look, it quite literally doesn’t get any better than this. Ever.

Attended a PAG factory tour when these W124's were being modified - the PAG parking lot was full of bodies/chassis being loaded onto railway flatbeds .... Those were the days. .. P.S., I'm the proud owner of a MY94 E320 coupe; Smoke silver metallic over Creme Beige leather interior. .. 99% 2-owner original . .. Gotta luv the engineering execution with the W124 series.
500e .. loved it when it first came out as a kid.. Mercedes with Porsche input.. and a V8 intoxicating!
It was a bucket list car for me and I feel pretty special to own it. Maintenance has been very expensive.

This tanned interior looks really nice. It's cool to have some contrast between the interior and exterior color in my opinion. Black interior will look very good on a silver car.

I had an E420 of the same gen (w126), and it was beautiful. an intoxicated driver hit it going over 60 mph, yet I survive. I'm hoping to buy another one soon. this car is the holly grail. beautiful.

I miss the 500E, my dad had one, his office partner had one and even an NBA player in town had one at the time, to this day it is probably still my favorite Benz. I might buy one again just to have one.

These are very rare and are appreciating fast.I owned the base W124 E320 for 10 years till it got totaled by rear end collision.
-the turning radius is amazing.
-no cup holders or glovebox.
-has to be driven long and hard,doesn't like to sit in garage.
-the wiring harness,a/c are the 2 weak points each over a $2k job.
-the temp guage in these do run slightly high,for some reason,doesn't affect anything.
-the single wiper does a better job than double ones.
-one of the most solid built sedans,the thunk from closing the doors is something else.

originaldelta the temp doesn't run high at all on these. All Mercedes from the late 80s and on up to today all run between 80C and 100 C.

I used to own a 300D with 450 000 miles on it, miss it till this day. Such a beater. Its still running somewhere out there, it keeps getting through the regulation checks every other year haha... In terms of build quality its one of the best cars ever built, neck in neck with the w123.

Orlando Rivera, it's a heavy car but I wouldn't call it floaty. It handles quite well. Having driven it at Thunderhill Raceway twice I can attest to the weight but it does handle well even though it is heavy.

I have 3 ECU's. 1. 92 / 2. original with a RENNTech chip / 3. One with an Upsolute chip. I used to distribute Upsolute chip tuning so this allowed me to have owners try them. At that time the cars weren't sophisticated enough to care which ECU was in the car. it was just pull and swapI still have the equipment and can copy an '92 chip for anyone interested.

Used to detail cars at a higher-end dealership in Utah that sold these once in a while about 15 years ago. This and the Range Rover Classic remain some of my favorite cars to this day.
Well here I am saying it again. Just love older luxury /sport sedans.
Prestine condition. You can tell the owner was a more than just a little nervous handing over the keys lol but good ep and a great car.

I have always loved these. I actually want one a lot just for comfortable cruising or driving.
Recaro seats with SLS in the rear make for a very comfortable ride.

I had a w124 300 TE. When I put the car in low gear "2" it would rev all the way to redline in 1st and 2nd gear. Just remember to put it ind 3rd or 4th before you hit the limiter in 2nd... It made a massive difference in standing start acceleration. I would assume that it will have the same effect on a 1993 500e. Cool car btw :)
Definatley a quad cam M119 engine. The M113 in the SL is 2 cam also overhead

There are two ca shafts over each cylinder head.

Dual OverHead Cam.... per bank. So the engine is a 4 cam then
You were trying to tell the other guy he was wrong for saying it was Dual Overhead Cam, but he's correct, it is Dual Overhead Cam. But there are two cylinder heads, making it a Quad cam.
That does not change the fact that it is Dual Overhead Cam
