Love how he optimistically says "minor issues" when the hydraulic suspension is rooted. That's probably going to cost thousands upon thousands to repair properly given the age of the car, it'll mean replacing dozens of seals that will all be perished by now, possibly causing distribution blocks that could take many hours to diagnose and repair - even Mercedes master techs often struggle to get them working properly again. Then there are the V12 oil leaks... nightmare... Good content though so he'll probably do fine out of it regardless.
This car is the Holy Grail of we W140 lovers. I have a '97 S500 and I will never part with it. It is mint with only 87K miles on it. MB did do some decontenting on these cars after '95, mainly the aforementioned power rearview mirror, rear parking masts(they'd shoot up from the rear fender when the car was in reverse; pre- rear camera days🤣), and no standard rear power seats on the 600. BUT the bank vault solidity and magic carpet ride remained.
Of course the cool thing about the power rear view mirror was that it was tied to the key fob, so my key fob set the seats and ALL of the mirrors to my settings, while my second key fob did the same for the other driver.
So refreshing to see a car that fits the channel's original theme. Perhaps there are millions of people out there who want to hear about millionaire toys, but to me, the best vicarious viewing is when you get cars like this.
Agree, Pat. In case you don't see my comment, I bought Bob's dream pair new in 1992 and have owned most of the great luxury and sport cars - this is by far, hands down, the best car ever made.
Speaking of the SSRs, I remember going to Detroit in 2005 and test driving both a green SSR and an orange GTO with 6 speeds and LS2s. While the GTO would light up the tires all day long, the SSR was waaaaaay too heavy to do any burn outs. As far as Tyler’s V12s, I do have a 456M and a W221 S65…and a green Jaguar…albeit a XJS coupe.

I'm guessing the bill from the Wizard will be in the 10K-15K to cover everything they find wrong. Belt service, air suspension, electronics for starters.
*I used to work on a fully armored version. The windows are insanely thick. And it’s a relatively fast vehicle, even with all the armor weight. W140 are awesome vehicles, if you maintain them well.*
I was a Factory Trained MB Technician in the 00’s, I worked with a foreman who was an official member of the “Ill never own a W140” club. Absolute heaps of flaming dollars on wheels.
Best of luck Tyler! I have a 99 s420, keep it and the 126! Take care of these old tanks. Worthless but still fun and special to us fans and Mercedes lovers.
Thought we might seem some white powder under the tailpipe while Hoovie was revving. Kinda like a scene with a beautiful 83 Eldorado from a movie we all love.
These are really tremendous cars. Bought mine in the spring of '97 in Florida from the dealership which just got it in from their District Rep. It had barely any miles and a discount of nearly 20 large off full retail at about 6 months old. They got in a total of 3 including mine, so not a real easy to find unit. I own it still and must say: that massively potent V/12 is awesome and with the speed limiter remedied to w.o.t. instead of the measley 148 mph governed, it will easily run 30 mph faster. It feels like floating on a cloud but with bank vault solidarity. I love it and will never let it go !
These are the videos we all love and want. The super car unobtainium purchases are nice every once in a while but these everyman’s car buys are where it’s at.
EuroAsian bob, wizzard, ninja, and everyone else is just amazing. Such a beautiful community you have made and beautiful REAL friendships you can relate to. fuckin love it. Keep it real hoovedawg.
Hoovie, I’m desperately awaiting the next video on this S600. I can’t wait! I check my TH-cam every hour. I have the same car and the w140 is my all time fav platform!
Well bought so far :-) I'm a W116 guy BUT the W140's are probably the last S class I'd consider and the 500 or 600 and even the 6 Cyl im comfy with as being a "Proper Mercedes". 2 friends have actually taken on 140 projects, @MMWA-DAVE and The Timp graduating from W116 6.9's to W126's and W124's (MMWA's Red 124 is a stunning example) so its awesome to see them back with an S Class doing it right.
W140s were the peak of MB in my opinion. I own a 1987 W126 420SEL and a 1992 W140 300SE and the W140, although it feels less 'traditional', is soooo much better built! They feel night and day when I drive them back to back, the doors on the W140 are like a bank vault in comparison...
My old boss had one of these and back in the day I was tasked with taking it for new tires, that's when I fell in love with Mercedes. This thing is a race car........
That V12 was basically two I6's connected together, it really isn't the greatest V12 I thought the next one was a better design but it is naturally aspirated and I loved the full powerband when I drove one, pulled like train.
I bought a 96 S420 in 2015 for $2500 and it came with the original window sticker with an MSRP of $92k - W140 is by far one of the best bangs for your buck if you get a relatively well taken care of example.
Cool car! I remember one of my first jobs at Mercedes as an apprentice was doing an engine wiring harness on one of those S600’s. That harness had to be like 12 feet long laid out 😩
A proud W140 owner here, these are the best tanks ever made. And its my daily, im set for life on needing any other car. W140 or bustt And just like any merc from this era, the windshield washer tank is busted from the engine heat and doesnt hold fluid. Fun fact: its got heated windshield washer tank.
I've had more of these than I could ever know what to do with: 1993 600SEC, 1994 SL600, 1995 S600, 1996 S600, 2003 S600, and I still have my 1997 SL600 and my 2006 S65 AMG! Love(d) them all.
Those SSRs are pretty neat. A 390 hp LS2 shoved into a little UTE that makes it scoot to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. That would be a fun little truck for very light utility work.
For people of 90's from Balkans like me, those were the benchmark of the ppl who stood on top of the world. There was nothing more appealing then this S class. Still think this is the best car ever made V12 - S600 - its a dream car, i know many ppl love classics like Ferrari or E type and so on, but for me W124 Chochone and S600 V12 W140 ..... just best of the best ever made ....
Pretty rare to see another TH-camr, much less one as big as Hoovie who actually knows their way around an S600 as well as the typical issues. Just be aware that not all 1996 year cars had the updated harnesses.
🤣 Hoovie ain't havin'nothing to do with that *SSR* You can see it written all over his face! He's like "Get me out of this thing ASAP" and no matter what positive thing Bob says about it, Tyler immediately shuts him down 😂
You should get something like effspot's $12,000 exhaust on his V12 S class. I'm not sure how much it cost him though, but I heard it was pretty expensive...
I got a ride once in a V-12 BMW 760li ...oh my word..they flat out fly for a big ass sedan, those old german tanks were epic to ride in, quiet, fast, AND comfortable
Here We go again, literally to the 1% who's reading this, God bless you, and may your dreams come true, stay safe and have a wonderful and blessed day.😇
I bought the pair new in 1992, convertible and sedan. 389hp new, which was insane for the time. But it was the smoothest engine you can imagine. BTW, the check to buy the pair new in 1992 was... $250,000. That is $537,000 in 2023 dollars - modern S Classes are a bargain, it turns out. At 140mph it was like sitting in your living room - so solid, stable, and quiet. When this video popped up my heart skipped a beat - incredible car. I wish I had kept them as weekenders, but there was just too much money tied up in them. These are cars I will always miss, along with the 500E.
Those 90s Mercs, BMWs and Lexuses were peak. I remember seeing those S600s just rollin down the highway effortlessly making Geo Metros look pedestrian.
The main reason the rearview mirror was powered was because it was hooked up to the seat memory. Really love these cars, the engeneering is rediculous. I drive a first gen s300 daily in Belgium, and love it. Glad to see a w140 on your channel again 👍🏻
1995 has 4 speed transmision and wiring harness issues and caps and rotors and more. 1996-1999 have 5 speed better trans and no caps and rotors they use coils and no harness issue. Much more desirable especially 1997-1999
Here in Taiwan W140 S600 is usuly around 2000~4000 USD or even less unless is in mint condition like brend new. But most S600 at here is in the junkyard. Because annual tax on 6 liter is around 2700 USD ,but S320 3.2 liter is around 1100 USD.
Got mine almost new, with an 80k warranty. I sold it as soon as the warranty wore out. The warranty company had spent 45k on repairs. A nightmare, even though I didn’t spend anything. The time commitment was enormous.
This is why they're cheap. I paid $5k for my 4Matic W220. I don't drive it often, 1500 kms/yr, so I haven't had any bad luck with it yet, after 5 yrs of ownership, but one day something expensive will probably fail. I got an Airmatic warning the other day, out of the blue. I restarted the car and the warning went away, so hopefully it was just the rain that was causing some minor issue. I'm happy if I only lose $1k/yr on depreciation, on any car, so I'm good at this stage. Besides, at this price, I could part it out and recoup most of my money anyway.
The 6cyl models are the opposite. I bought a 1992 W140 300SE nearly 4 years ago at 105k and replaced the fluids, filters replaced a few cooling system and ignition parts as preventative maintenance. I've driven it every day since and it's now on 224k without a hassle.
I bought a white '96 S600 back in 2003. The car had 78k miles on it when I bought it. I paid $25,000 for it. The window sticker came with the car and showed $126,000. I kept the car for 3 years and it had 208k miles on it when I sold it. Some cool features included a reclining back seat, dual pane windows, and door close assist. The power window button sunk into the console on mine also. It would cruise down the road at 120 mph just like most cars go down the road at 80 mph. The fastest I ever got it to was 150 then I backed off, the car had more in it. What a beautiful car!!
Suspension spheres, hey! Like my Citroën C5. There is a membrane in the spheres separating the fluid from high pressure nitrogen gas. The gas is the spring, so if the membrane fails, both halves are full of fluid and the suspension becomes rock hard. When the suspension is working it's almost magical.
I'm really not a German car fan, and often whine about too much German car content... But I do know my classics, and THAT, to me, is a real Mercedes Benz, and what the name should stand for. I really do want to see this one get back to its full glory!!!!

I love these so much! Glad someone who appreciates w140 so much will bring this one the love it deserves
This will always be the best S class of all time. The technology and comfort was way ahead of its time.
I like how the trailer ends with wizard saying, "these engines don't really have a good track record." as Hoovie smiles
Unstick the buttons with w-d40 it works did mine a couple years ago still working perfectly on my 2008 Benz!! Love my car after 14 years!! Dallas in Plano TX.
i had the old S500...what a beast..but frickin expensive to maintain...specially in european country....but what a monster..doing 200km/h in dead silence is something else
I'm guessing the bill from the Wizard will be in the 10K-15K to cover everything they find wrong. Belt service, air suspension, electronics for starters.
@@danm3359 at least.
As much as I miss my '92 (bought new) for sentimental reasons, I kind of knew that this would be the case.
Nothing like the W140 leather/ leaky evaporator smell! MB tech since 2000. I still own a 1999 S320.
@@mbjasondify that dash 😵💫 🤦. Never again!
Best of luck Tyler! I have a 99 s420, keep it and the 126!
Take care of these old tanks.
Worthless but still fun and special to us fans and Mercedes lovers.
I can’t wait to see what the wizard finds on this! Luv ur show Hoovie!!
Probably enough to put a downpayment on a summer house. The hydraulic suspension fix could cost as much as the car.
Thought we might seem some white powder under the tailpipe while Hoovie was revving. Kinda like a scene with a beautiful 83 Eldorado from a movie we all love.
Needs a $12,000 exhaust.
It doesn't
@@LaidBackDeveloper Yes it does need the $12,000 Sasaki exhaust.
It does.

Needs a bod with a welding kit and a bit of nonce about them. So not you then .
You know Brabus has a really really nice package they do restomod and updating this old S classes that is really badass.
ha what you think the sticker is on that ?
Love the relationship these two guys have. It's wholesome and enjoyable to watch
Smart move by Bob. I'd be very glad to have a friend like you Hoovie.
Keep up the content!
These are the videos we all love and want. The super car unobtainium purchases are nice every once in a while but these everyman’s car buys are where it’s at.
Text⬆️I've something special for you
EuroAsian bob, wizzard, ninja, and everyone else is just amazing. Such a beautiful community you have made and beautiful REAL friendships you can relate to. fuckin love it. Keep it real hoovedawg.
Hurray! Something I can relate too. A great older car with a relatable price.
Hoovie, I’m desperately awaiting the next video on this S600. I can’t wait! I check my TH-cam every hour. I have the same car and the w140 is my all time fav platform!
Well bought so far :-)
I'm a W116 guy BUT the W140's are probably the last S class I'd consider and the 500 or 600 and even the 6 Cyl im comfy with as being a "Proper Mercedes".
Euroasian Bob's beard is coming in FIERCE! Nice V12, a proper Sonderklasse.
Uh.. ok…
That V12 was basically two I6's connected together, it really isn't the greatest V12 I thought the next one was a better design but it is naturally aspirated and I loved the full powerband when I drove one, pulled like train.
My thought when I read the popup message: "I HOPE ITS A SL600.... I want to see that M120 V12"
He had a few sl600s
I bought a 96 S420 in 2015 for $2500 and it came with the original window sticker with an MSRP of $92k - W140 is by far one of the best bangs for your buck if you get a relatively well taken care of example.
Yeah, finally real Hoopties
Cool car! I remember one of my first jobs at Mercedes as an apprentice was doing an engine wiring harness on one of those S600’s. That harness had to be like 12 feet long laid out 😩
Had a 3.2. Kinda miss it, but it was a bit expensive. Awesome cars.
A proud W140 owner here, these are the best tanks ever made. And its my daily, im set for life on needing any other car. W140 or bustt
And just like any merc from this era, the windshield washer tank is busted from the engine heat and doesnt hold fluid. Fun fact: its got heated windshield washer tank.
Congratulations Tyler! This one I am looking forward to!
I've had more of these than I could ever know what to do with: 1993 600SEC, 1994 SL600, 1995 S600, 1996 S600, 2003 S600, and I still have my 1997 SL600 and my 2006 S65 AMG! Love(d) them all.
I believe the CLK GTR was a tad bit more expensive in the 90s at 1.5 million
That is my favorite Mercedes Ever, then it is the SLR McLaren right after.
@@CB12345 can't forget the CLK DTM.
Eh, I want a blacked out 91 560sec,4 doors are ok for hoors but I like the 2 door for style
@@MrTheHillfolk I agree
"Peak Mercedes" is very accurate - totally agree, arguably this is the greatest car ever made by the company, the least compromised...
everything I LOVE in one Hoovie video WOW
As a guy who spends a lot of time in Wichita, it's always so wierd, even after years of watching your stuff, to see streets I know well.
Wow... It's a beauty. Potentially.
Those SSRs are pretty neat. A 390 hp LS2 shoved into a little UTE that makes it scoot to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. That would be a fun little truck for very light utility work.
Super fun to drive!
Basically has a Zonda engine under the hood. Love the sound.
Other way around. The Zonda has a Mercedes engine.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH 😂
Totally off topic, but In Kansas City for work and decided to try a Freddy’s burger in your honor. Great stuff !
Well let’s see how deep the rabbit hole goes on this hooptie journey. What will the Wizard be buying?
For people of 90's from Balkans like me, those were the benchmark of the ppl who stood on top of the world. There was nothing more appealing then this S class. Still think this is the best car ever made V12 - S600 - its a dream car, i know many ppl love classics like Ferrari or E type and so on, but for me W124 Chochone and S600 V12 W140 ..... just best of the best ever made ....
Tyler exudes “I’m so done with this man’s shit” energy
Pretty rare to see another TH-camr, much less one as big as Hoovie who actually knows their way around an S600 as well as the typical issues.
Just be aware that not all 1996 year cars had the updated harnesses.
Tyler in his natural habitat, basking in the warm glow of a Check Engine Light, humming along to the distant song of the cash register..... 😁
haha 🤣
Gets in a car with a cold V-12 engine, starts it, then redlines it within two seconds. This is why Hoovie’s cars all break.
🤣 Hoovie ain't havin'nothing to do with that *SSR*
You can see it written all over his face! He's like "Get me out of this thing ASAP" and no matter what positive thing Bob says about it, Tyler immediately shuts him down 😂
why would you want to have anything to do with it, i'm happy someone likes it but i wouldnt touch one with a 10ft pole
You should get something like effspot's $12,000 exhaust on his V12 S class. I'm not sure how much it cost him though, but I heard it was pretty expensive...
I can already see the Wizzard leafing through the luxury RV brochures...
I can’t believe I almost bought this car! Didnt imagine seeing it on this channel lol
Be glad you didn’t!
I got a ride once in a V-12 BMW 760li ...oh my word..they flat out fly for a big ass sedan, those old german tanks were epic to ride in, quiet, fast, AND comfortable
As a 1992-3 S320 W-140 series owner, I am saying my prayers for you, for when you take it to the Car Wizard's shop! 🙏📿
I have the same car as you and i spend 14000 euro in more than 1 year
Here We go again, literally to the 1% who's reading this, God bless you, and may your dreams come true, stay safe and have a wonderful and blessed day.😇
I bought the pair new in 1992, convertible and sedan.
As a die-hard Chiefs fan living in Massachusetts, I love Bob’s hat!
That V-12 also had 4 turbos strapped to it and made 850+ HP in the Chrysler ME-412. A car we never got because it embarrassed Mercedes too much.
Those 90s Mercs, BMWs and Lexuses were peak. I remember seeing those S600s just rollin down the highway effortlessly making Geo Metros look pedestrian.
Gorgeous car! Really looking forward to this restoration! The s600 looks spectacular. Super aggressive yet understated.
I love the sound of those V12's starting up.
God the sound of a Mercedes V12 starter and initial startup will never fail to be orgasmic.
The main reason the rearview mirror was powered was because it was hooked up to the seat memory. Really love these cars, the engeneering is rediculous. I drive a first gen s300 daily in Belgium, and love it. Glad to see a w140 on your channel again 👍🏻
HAHA i have the w140 Doug Demuro reviewed! I was wondering when you were going to get one!
Hey Hoovie, what’s the difference between the 95 & the 96 s600 v12? Why is the 96 more desirable? Would like to know.
Thanks.
1995 has 4 speed transmision and wiring harness issues and caps and rotors and more. 1996-1999 have 5 speed better trans and no caps and rotors they use coils and no harness issue. Much more desirable especially 1997-1999
Oh wow! Didn’t know that but that’s good to know bc this is one of the cars on my list to own one day. Thanks for the info I appreciate it.
I absolutely love 90’s cars and “boxy” design,i had a 96 ES300 two-tone “gold/silver,what a machine and an absolute AMAZING ride comfort
I swear this is the very best a motor can sound... In the world!!! I love those V12s...
Hey hoovie! Thanks for the content on this boring Tuesday
So Bert Crysler is now in the car business.
@@maxmeier532 Brent Kershaw is definitely on the car business now
I bought a white '96 S600 back in 2003.
How was the mechanical experience?
Hey Hoovie, can you take a sound level reading on the highway? Always been curious about that chassis vs the S220.
"It's not a turd... but it definitely needs stuff!" classic turd punting lmao. Awesome car, one of my bucket list cars
