I’d say the formal shoe last is more limiting - for your toes! Crazy that the rounder one is considered wide. I’m making my own shoes now and the first thing is tracing my foot so that it’s actually shaped after my foot and not the foot getting shaped by my shoes 😊
its alarming the lack of good INFORMATIVE tutorials on youtube , thank you for taking time to explain and actually teach something because the majority of "tutorials" on youtube are just montages and not actually tutorials
Thank you for going to all the work required to filming and editing this shoemaking series. It is much appreciated! I especially enjoy that you didn't edit out your mistakes, but included them as another layer of learning for us viewers. I have watched many shoemaking videos, and yours is right up there at the top for how informative it is.
I have been very frustrated in the past, trying to find any information on how to select lasts. Thank you for filling the gap for me! This is by far the most useful video I have ever found on the subject!
Thank you very much for this video, it's very informative and I appreciate it, particularly as someone whose orthotics don't allow for many shoes to fit.
Hi Andrew, It's so good to have you to support my newfound passion to learn boot/shoe making. I have a footwear repair background, so I do have a general understanding of footwear construction, which helps heaps. Where are you based Andrew?
Very informative, and detailed explanation of instructions. I'm looking forward to your help in learning the proper way of making my own shoes. I'm considered tall at 5'7", so I prefer a shoe with low to no heel, but I too enjoy the "clack" of heel to floor! New sub.
Love it!!!! New to the whole craft. I have super narrow feet and shoe shopping is like shopping for Cinderella....nothing fits usually....except that rare one pair! What would be a narrow width designation for a last? (women's shoes)
Last width is designated by a letter after the size number (10D, 8A etc.) Standard women's lasts are B width, men's are D. I guess you could look for an A width or shave down a standard last
I super loved your videos it enlighten me alot. Warm greetings to little Andrew (your kid). I wish I can get a video on how to make the inner landen for the upper
Hello, thanks for the video, it was very useful. I have a question regarding the insole space. After measuring everything like you did, will there be space for an insole? If not, how can i add those few millimeters to the last in order to be able to then add an insole inside the shoe?
I'm glad I searched again after one year looking again for such video and find nothing! Still, the major question is where to find lasts nowadays... Luckily I found a 2nd hand one but next option was really pricy . Keep up making videos! You're doing great!
If I were you I would make my own last by making plaster casting of the actual foot, then shaping it to the shoe shape you’d like, cast it one more time with a mix of epoxy and sawdust. You may spend more time making it but you save money and satisfaction of making the last exactly the way you want
Thanks for doing these videos. So hard to find shoe making courses. None in rural Australia. Looking like I'll have to travel to Melbourne to do a decent one, which is 8 hours away!
I had to go to Brisbane for my training, but I think that company has closed down. There's probably only three people in Australia teaching shoemaking now and they're all in big cities
There's a website called I can make shoes and they offer online courses :-) I don't know if they are a thing in Australia, but here you can do small courses in adult education colleges..
Thank you for such a clear, concise, and iformative series on shoemaking. This has taken a lot of the mystery out of it for me. One quick question, in researching buying my first last (haha) I noticed they are not sold as styles such as derby or oxford, etc., but seem to have model numbers. Are those numbers different for each company or is there a uniform code of model numbers that is industry standard? How does one know they are buying a last for a derby shoe?
I suspect shapes would be brand dependent, but I really wouldn't know. Unless you can get your hands on a pair I think there will be some guesswork involved.
Can you use an old shoe that fit really well as a last? I had a pu cowboy boot and I cut the shoe part away when the heel gave out in order to see if I could use it to develop a base pattern
I'm a new subscriber. Thank you so much for your videos. They are very well done and informative. I'm going to follow along, from your very 1st video til the last and make these shoes. Do you have information on how to build up a last if your foot is wider than the last you have available?
G'day Andrew, do you know what material is the plastic last is made with especially if I do custom foot cast with alginate? Excellent video btw, very informative.
I'm trying to figure out how to make boots with a slight heel (cause I'm short), that are laced in the front and have a slightly pointed toe. Is there a specific type of last I should look for or would it be better to just try and make my own?
I might answer that in a future video. It's hard to give a quick recommendation that will work for everyone so I'll have to look into local suppliers for different parts of the world
I can't help you much there. The only remaining supplier in Melbourne closed a few years ago so you'll have to scour gumtree, ebay and second hand dealers to find any lasts. Or buy them from overseas and pay a buttload in shipping costs. I have a few women's lasts I could sell off, but no men's. Unless you're a size 8, in which case I might be able to help

Impressive sock collection, sir. Thanks a lot for an informative video!
Love at first last!
I am so going to binge watch this genius man and the whole channel right now at 2 AM!
Thank you!
Gratitude from Egypt.
Thanks for sharing. Getting this info has saved me years of trial and error.

This was so interesting and filled with clear instructions and information, thank you :)

But where do you buy lasts from? The internet is disappointingly void of any trustworthy-seeming last sellers.

I'm not sure if it's needed, but it can't hurt. Glue a piece of leather the same thickness as the insole to the bottom of the last.
Fantastic videos
Please help on making a derby shoe with down stitching
Thx

Not sure what part of the world you are but Lonsdale in Vancouver has a few styles

Glue on a layer of leather where you need the last wider, then shape it with a file to match your foot. Glad I can help
what are the differences for shoe sizes? the model stays the same and it does need some scaling?
Thank you for the video!! I am just lost as to where to get shoe Lasts! Can't find anything useful.

If you can find a last supplier and give them that description they should be able to help. Finding the supplier is the hard part

How are left and right shoe lasts matched in shape?

Donde podría comprar hormas de madera. Podría pasarme el fabricante o vendedor.

Hello Andrew. Great videos! I was wondering if you could tell me what style of last I would need to make a pair of thousand mile boots. Thanks!
I honestly don't know. If you manage to find a last supplier they would be able to recommend a style.
@@AndrewReesonLeather my longest foot measures 11.3". Why would a boot maker tell me I'm a 12 instead of at least 11.5"?

You can use an ordinary shoe last for boots, but I believe specific boot lasts do exist

Why is a shoelast not shaped like a foot?
I mean a human foot, as opposed to a doll, or puppet foot.
I just can't shake the reality of seeing so many shoes not shaped like human feet.
It take my pinky toe being curled in very personally. Sorry. I blame the status quo.
(I'm giving suggestions to someone more talented than me)
I can't make a shoe better than you. But if nobody listens, I might have to learn.
Keep the damn thing still so we can see the shape, man !
That foot was hideous. ..lol
Bruh, that's my foot :(
Aaand? Give up?
