In this video, Dr. Ryan discusses the #1 myth associated with Sciatica, often misdiagnosed as Piriformis Syndrome. The Piriformis muscle can press on the sciatic nerve, but research has shown that this is not the primary cause of sciatic symptoms. The video explains that the most common cause of Sciatica is the compression of nerve roots in the spine, rather than the Piriformis muscle.
Dr. Ryan talks about Nerve Flossing, an exercise commonly prescribed for Sciatica. The proper way to do nerve flossing is in a side-lying or supine position, moving the ankle and head in the same direction to glide the nerve through its groove. Improper techniques, like moving the foot and head in opposite directions, can worsen the condition. He emphasizes the importance of timing and condition in introducing nerve flossing, and the fact that it may not be effective for all cases of sciatica.
Overall, nerve flossing may be helpful for some individuals with sciatica, particularly those with conditions like piriformis syndrome. However, it is important to listen to your body and discontinue the exercise if it causes increased pain or discomfort. Additionally, incorporating other exercises for muscle and hip movement may also be beneficial for overall pain relief.

This is what people need - good solid advice that is low risk high reward and easily accesible. There is so much garbage and bad advice on youtube. You speak with not just knowledge but wisdom - its obvious from the way you explain things your understanding is past research, books, personal experience but a real world understanding of humans and how their bodies work. Its funny how we look to neurosurgeons/orthopedic surgeons as experts in this field when in reality they are experts in "renovation" when the human body fails. So many people could benefit from your advice - it would be great to see how someone like you could be better integrated into health care systems to help people heal. Look forward to more of your content!

This was very helpful. My physical therapist had me do nerve flossing and it really aggravated my sciatica. Also doing the figure 4 stretch made it worse. Even walking makes it worse. My MRI doesn't show much of a bulging disk that could be causing my sciatica pain on both sides of my body. We are all stumped at what is causing this horrible pain. We have ruled out most things and many tests and physical therapy and medicine hasn't helped me at all.

You just described my experience and condition exactly. But I damaged L4-5 in 2018 and now have a fusion in there. Symptoms are the L4 and L5 regions shown on a dermatomes chart.

I’m in the same boat. Nerve flossing has never helped. Long standing problem for me.

Thanks so much for your videos. I have already had multi-level cervical fusion and now they say I need lumbar fusion. I am trying my best to avoid that for as long as possible. Exercise is the key❤

Thanks for the information! I feel that my sciatica pain is related to the hernia itself. But at the same time it feels like the "tension" or sciatica pain is stoping me from gaining the good posture and movment patern necessary for my healing... and so I almost get a instinct to stretch/flos the posterior muscles of my legs

I recently had a surgeon diagnosed my leg groin and lower back pain as SI joint related. the previous surgeon suggested it was sciatica. is there a way to determine which is the overlying problem SI joint or sciatica problems? thanks

I did yours on lying position but it made my condition worse. Could barely work because my leg hurts so bad.

I'm definitely not ready for nerve flossing, when i massage my piriformis muscle it sends out shock waves which feel like small electrical shocks. But not down my leg.

I've had three back surgeries and all of the p.t people I have seen have tried flossing. It leaves me in pain every time. Sometimes for days. Those were disk issues. I believe that I have currently slipped a disk on first day out of a ankle cast so here I go down the rabbit hole of more p.t. pain docs etc. it seems they all have different opinions. My take on it is that I know after three surgeries, the feel of it. why do doctors hesitate to order a c.t. ?? uh, people....can we find out what it is before we treat please......

Something that no one is talking about that related to the cure is: swimming 🏊 and sauna. Also I highly believe one of the main cause of back pain is: sex and masturbation.

Just to confirm flossing is probably not best for a spondy?
