- IELTS Writing Task 1 is the cause of more failure than Task 2, even though Task 1 is worth half as much.
In this General Training lesson, I will show you how you can use the question to help you structure your letter in a simple but effective way.
I will write a full formal letter and then show you how I would transform this formal Task 1 letter into an informal Task 1 letter. This will show you the different vocabulary that can be employed to make your Task 1 General Training responses more formal or informal.

Hi Chris, Useful content! You make it easy always!
Isn’t that point 2 on informal email should be about impact of missing meeting instead of about missing plane? Correct my understanding, if I am mistaken.
Thanks 🎉
We have two methods of writing in IELTS, which method of writing did u use in writing this task1
Hey Chris could you please make more videos about academic writing task 1, as it seems I struggle a lot for this particular section ?

Quarter-formal is so funny, I was literally on the floor😂
I am actually preparing for my Multilevel exam and if I take certificate it is appropriate for only Uzbekistan universities. But I want to learn it from Chris and because multilevel exam writing task 1 is similar to general ielts writing task 1 I am learning it not uzbek teachers because there are many unprofessional and fake online teacher's in the telegram. I believe you are the most reliable teacher😊😊😊
Hi Chris! This has been very helpful.
I just have one question: If I am writing to a lecturer about why I missed the deadline, I know it is formal, but do I say Dear Mr. Thomas or do I say Dear Sir or Madam.
The same question applies to a neighbour.
formal
谢谢您!
Thank you so much! Writing Task 1 seems so easy now! What about contractions? I thought we should not use them in Writing.
Hi there, you should not use contractions when you are writing an academic essay. If you have any other questions on the IELTS process, please visit our 'Frequently Asked Questions' page on our website. You can also email us anytime and one of our team members will be happy to assist you.

Do we need to write a last para that says looking forward..
❤🎉You are the best in explanation, I liked your chanel very much.
Stay bless.
My problem is I didnt experience that situation so I dont have any idea 😅😭😭😭😭
Yeah this is same with me
Just make things up, even though it’s challenging
Same with me
😂😂😂😂
Yeah same here,
I don’t get ideas about topics i’m not familiar for example technology, globalization, ecomomy 🥲🥲🥲
Just understood now. Task 1 is okay
Hi there, can we write the day and date details in this letter?
Sir will it deduct my marks if I don't keep one line space after each paragraph? I wont very well but didn't keep any line between each paragraphs 😢
hey chris , i have one doubt regarding this video . as you mentioned that the aircraft already left without you , then how can they remove your bags from it ?
Hi, I noticed you never introduced yourself in the formal letter to the airline. Is that ideal?
There is actually something called semi-formal. If you're asked to write a letter to your neighbour (who has just moved in next door) inviting them to a party you're throwing. In this case, it isn't quite formal, as they are not a building manager or your manager. But they are also not your friend exactly, as you don't really know them. This means this is actually semi-formal and things get tricky here. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Hey chris, writing to a close teacher who knew at school, should that be a formal letter? And also all semi-formal letters are treated as formal in ILETS GT?
Hi Kishan, here's a video to help you with your query: th-cam.com/video/rk4BWIo0Hec/w-d-xo.html. This lesson will teach you the difference between writing an informal and formal letter. If you have any further questions or need our team to help you prepare for your IELTS exam, please feel free to contact us.
One thing to note in these letters. When the plane left without you. How can they remove your bag from the plane and escort you out of the airport. (Remove bag from the plane, did they remove before the plane take off?)
Thinking the same😂
Hello, I thought writing task 1 is about the chart, graphs, process, and maps only? Thanks!
Hi there, the lesson in this video is for General IELTS. If you’re taking Academic IELTS, you’ll be required to write a report on a data set, map or process in Writing Task 1. You should check this article on our website titled 'IELTS Preparation - The Ultimate Guide'. I'm sure you'll find it helpful. Tomorrow i have my final ielts exam and I came across this. Thanks Chris . 27 April 2024
Same here tomorrow
Good luck!
I thought we can't use contractions in any of IELTS' modules
Hi there, you should use contractions (where possible) in Task 1 General Training informal letters, but you should not use them in formal letters. If you have any further questions or need our team to help you prepare for your IELTS exam, please feel free to contact us.

@@Ieltsadvantage Thanks for regards. I prepare students for IELTS but always recommend them to follow you. But alas, every one wants cooked and sauced 😂 formuliac structures ..
Hi Chris. For the informal email, you made the same story about missing the flight for the meeting with your friend while on the note they didn't tel you about any missing flight or a plane ! Is it ok to add to the story something ?
Pls, Is it on the exam day that we are going to be given the centre number and student number or it will be sent to us
It will be given in the exam day
I remember being advised everywhere not to use a contraction during the IELTS Writing test....
Thanks a lot 🙏.
Excuse me, What is the difference between academic and general training 🤔???
Google will help you with that.
AC is for students; General is for the professionals trying to get PR visa

Hi, I just wanted to confirm, during my last Ielts writing exam, I received a letter mentioning that I have to write a letter to a retired family I know who are coming to visit my locality and in that it was mentioned start with Dear ......., So I interpreted that it was Semi formal and started writing saying Dear Mr & Mrs Smith. So was I right? Was it a formal letter format that I had to use since it was not mentioned friend?
I have another exam coming up tomorrow so it would be great if you could reply me.
Hi there, if the question asks you to write to a ‘friend’, it should be an informal letter. If the question asks you to write to anyone else, it should be a formal letter. Best of luck with your test!
