Do I Still Love My Jeep Wrangler After 4 Years?

  • I’ve owned this little yellow 2 door Jeep Wrangler for 4 years now and I’ve taken it on some great adventures from off-roading in the mountains to overlanding in the desert! I absolutely love my Jeep but I do have a few critiques. In this video, I'll share the pros and cons of owning a Jeep, my thoughts about why I decided to get this Jeep, and how I've liked it as both a commuter and adventure vehicle. Brad will talk about the more technical aspects, going over some the modifications we've made and he'll take you on a tour of the exterior, the engine, and the interior to discuss some of the parts and components that have held up well and what hasn't.

6:46 my man doesn’t think twice before changing the wheels and tires, bumpers, suspension, drive shaft, axels… but is too skeptical about changing the Gas cap. 😅
    I love the off-roader community. ❤

When My mom passed, I adopted her 2000 Yellow Wrangler. Mom's nickname in High School was Wacky Mackey, SOOOOO.... since the hood was blank, I scanned in her hand writing and made some stickers to put on the side of the hood. The 2000 is the Wackey Mackey.. It had 50K miles on it when I got it. I have put 20K since owning it. I'd forgotten how much I love Jeeps. I just wish she would have bought a standard. ;-) My first car was a Jeep I bought out of a junk yard for $400 bucks. With some elbow grease I got that straight six humming. I still am mad that I sold it. GGGreat job on your videos!!!!

Well, I was talking more about Brad and his wife.
Understanding her reasons for yellow I respect that. But wouldn't be my personal choice.
I prefer something that blends into the nature you're exploring.
Yellow associates me with school busses, taxi cabs and Ryder rental trucks. Lol.

It is true. But in many states they require headlights on during rain and low viz situations. Most modern vehicles have full time day time running lights. I don't think safety is a real issue when choosing a color.
We've had several yellow vehicles in the family. Nothing wrong with that. Just personal choice.

Regena, I remember seeing the 1st video of your yellow "Fllora". I thought man that is one of the best Jeeps I have ever seen....... my 1st jeep was a Yellow '04 TJ, I did not have it long...... and for me looking through the used Jeep ads i came across a Orange '15 JKR (his name is OJ). My 1st car was a Yellow '75 Bug...... next came a Yellow '67-1/2 Mustang....... Yea, I like YELLOW.

I love seing couples and families all wheeling together. Jeeps are so good about naturally encouraging togetherness and doing things as groups. My wife and daughter are both Jeep girls, and while my daughter loves her white 2 door hardtop Wrangler, my wife prefers her 5.7L Hemi Powered Grand Cherokee TrailHawk. It's the vehicle she traded the minivan for, and the first vehicle she has owned that she is passionate about. She built an emotional connection with the TrailHawk, and being a car guy, that makes me very happy. I myself am beyond happy with my 2018 JLUR, and It has it's share of Ocala National Forest Pinstripes and rock rash on the rock rails, steel fenders, and beadlocks. I also have around 63,000ish miles on mine with the 3.6, and I agree. Its a solid and trouble free motor, and mated to the 8 speed auto and 5.13 gears, turns my 38's very very well. I also have a 99 C5 Corvette, but I prefer the Jeep for daily driving and weekend adventures.

I think you made a great choice in buying your yellow 2018 Rubicon Jeep. I love it and it's color. I have owned four canary yellow vehicles including a Porsche 124 and a Camaro Z28. Recognized the '73 right away. Had one myself (not a super) in L13 Texas Yellow as well. Still at my dad's place, in pieces unfortunately. Learned to drive in his Karmann Ghia. Fun times!
For the rest of my comment:
Summary: we have a Chrysler Town & Country and we've had good luck but with several small issues and a few not so small, and one I know is a big one but it's so far only putting metal shavings in the oil filter and drain, seen with the last change. 4 years is NOT enough time to be impressed at "how well it's holding up" when other makes and models are easily going 150,000 miles plus with no issues. I'd be impressed with a *Chrysler* making it to 100,000 with no issues, but I'd *EXPECT* that from any other make and model built after 2015.
Now the long version (sorry for the book):
Our Chrysler Town & Country had a little over 70, maybe 75 thousand miles on it when the little plastic "Y" on the coolant line literally split its seam. Correct replacement was ridiculously priced for all that it is, I forget what it cost, but instead I got a generic aluminum tee. Works just fine for a fraction of the cost.
That said, the van was 3 years old when we bought it, and had 36,000 miles then. So we'd had it about 4 or maybe 5 years before that happened, and now it's turning 90,000. The last oil change, there were ferric shavings in the filter and in the drain pan. Not sure what's grinding away but it's only a matter of time before we find out, hopefully as we pull into the driveway some Friday evening when I have the weekend to tear into it.
Around 50 or 60k miles, we had to replace the shocks, which shouldn't have been necessary. In the van's defense, the GMC Terrain that backed into it should not have. But we shouldn't have needed shocks from that minor fender bender.
Around the same time as the coolant line issue, we also had to take the transmission in to be rebuilt at 70,000ish. Going up a small hill not far from the house, the transmission gave way and dropped into 2nd gear "limp" mode. I forget what all the mechanic found (I'm just not equipped, nor do I have time with preteen kids, to DIY that crap today). I seem to recall the valve body needing replacement.
We've had fair to good luck with this Chrysler powertrain but we've known a lot of people who have not.
Let's not start on the ridiculous stuff like the TPMS sensors mysteriously being bad ever since the first tire change, the passenger airbag light occasionally indicating a warning, or the fact that once every month SiriusXM wipes out the presets my wife sets in the radio.
I'm a Chrysler guy, but I have to admit. I've been driving my wife's 2004 Pontiac for 12 years ever since I ran my Daytona into a Passat's tail end, and it has had
    **ZERO**
powertrain issues in that time, now approaching 80,000 miles. Granted, it's not hauling a fully occupied minivan with luggage cross country like we did with the van, but I'm not the easiest on the car. The Pontiac does have a bad volume control in the radio and the A/C makes a repetitive "clack clack clack" sound when I have it set anywhere other than halfway between recirc and regular chill modes, and much of the plastic in the cabin is deteriorating (and the vinyl/pleather of the dash is all warped and ugly), but mechanically the car is an easy 7 or 8 out of ten, at eighteen years of age, with not even the recommended amount of preventive maintenance that should be done. Hardly taking care of anything outside oil and tires, that little car just keeps on giving.
I'm the last person to praise on GM products but in my limited experience, as much as I want a Gladiator, it's mainly for its looks and reputation of capability borrowed from the Wrangler line. I'm not looking forward to the problems Chrysler's 3.6L and whatever they're calling that 8-speed have in store for me.
I'm hoping the manual isn't too rough to drive. I really miss rowing my own.
Honestly though, I might just find me a nice late 60s sedan to daily drive. None of this added points of failure with each electronic component nonsense. My beetle from '73 got 25 miles per gallon and the only time it failed it was mechanical. Points, aftermarket fuel filter, generator belt. That engine just never quit if you maintained it even a little.
Sorry for the book. Really like your channel, thanks for the vids, knowledge, and entertainment!

Should really consider the oracle oculus headlights. They are full plug and play and look factory if you dont wire the halo (I think they look better without the halo), they are made in USA, and they are so much cheaper than the factory ones. I put them in my jeep and couldnt be happier with them.

Oh my goodness, so grateful to you for the mention of the steering gear box replacement. Being utterly new to Wranglers I assumed the unsettling feeling at speed (both hands on the steering well, free play, wandering) was a "Jeep" thing, but now happily have uncovered the TSB and will be contacting my dealership tomorrow. IN other words your cheery video has both solved an issue I had and increased my safety while being a great video to watch PS-also have a Hella Yella which practically shouted at me to bring it home! Me and my wife have had a 2010 2 door wrangler which is my everyday drive which I have changed everything I can, yes I’ve taken this little thing to Moap 4X and had so much fun with it without any problems besides my wallet 😂. My wife have her 4Runner and now 2 little boys that loves the outdoors and my wife finally agreed that’s time for us to upgrade so I took full advantage of it and ordered a all black 392 XR about a month ago looking at 3-6 months for delivery and I’m still in shock that I’m getting a 392 . Sweet Jeep, Regina! You can still add the Mopar LED headlights and LED Bulbs for the front turn signals, DRLs and fogs like I did, replacing those front JL candles, easy upgrade, and probably my favorite mod on my channel. I had to use a tazer to turn LEDs on to avoid flickering and enable halos but you might already have one for tires, or Jeep dealer can also enable all LED front lights. I spent around 1k for all front LED lights, and tazer, installed all myself. THANK YOU for being so awesome you two! Both Jeeps need the Mopar Gorilla Glass windshield, no more replacements, one and done. Rugged Ridge snorkel paired with KNN Air Filter helped my mpg by 3-4 on V6. Brad’s 392 is already good to go. Great video, I always go back and forth about getting a 2 door, I've had a XJ, JKU, JLU, the only other vehicle a 2 door '93 Toyota Pickup. It's just my wife and I, but.......I like the option to sleep in my JLU on a DeepSleep mattress, at least for now. My JL is my daily driver and I take it on surf trips (boards go up top, I sleep inside), and off-roading/hiking weekend trips. I always debate if the pros (smaller footprint, more fun to drive (I think), etc.) would outweigh the cons (lack of storage/board space).
If I got a 2 door, Hella Yella is what I would want, great looking Jeep, hopefully they will bring that color back.

Same for me. I had a 99 TJ 2 door lifted in my 20s, had a family and sold it for a 4 door ram. Drove that ram for 16 years! Now in my 40s and kids all grown up, special ordered a 21 rubicon 2 door 6 speed ragtop 3.6!!! I hope to drive this jeep until it no longer drives!

I bought a yellow 2019 Wrangler JL Rubicon with the 2.0L engine (just like this one!) and matching top and fenders after seeing this Jeep. Now it has 30k miles. I am glad that Regena's Jeep is still doing well since maybe that means I will be just as lucky. Since the Jeep is parked in the garage, there is no plastic fading.
I really love the maneuverability of 2 door jeeps. It is not good at carrying a lot of stuff, but removing the back seat made traveling a lot easier. It is still not good for carrying long objects.

Hi there Mrs Trail Recon. I'm also another woman owned Hella Yella 2 door wrangler rubicon jl. I didn't want the full yellow (I have the black hard top and fenders) but I still love mine. Because I work from home mine ends up sitting in the garage for months at a time. I still haven't cracked 10,000 miles on it but I manage to get it out in the summer. I remove the top and doors for the summer time. I have used the winch on mine but not for vehicle recovery, I've used it mainly to recover my zero turn mower when it gets stuck in my very hilly yard. For mine I chose the oh so original name of Ruby.
The day I brought my Jeep home I removed the rear seat and never put it back, so it's also a 2 seater for me with a brand new never sat in rear seat. The back area is the cargo area (recovery gear, air compressor, etc). For me I love shore driving in the summer time with the top and doors off. I have folded my windshield down several times and did buy the windshield tie down kit and that gets pretty breezy.
Maybe some day you will make it out to the east coast.

I have had 5 windshields replaced in my 2011 Wrangler until the glass guys modified the last install and did something with the gasket similar to newer Jeeps. From that time forward I had no issues with rocks/cracks. Now I have had a 2021 and plenty of rocks fly up on it and still no chips/cracks… knock on wood.
