I live in the United States. I would love it so much if I could hear Maddy Prior sing this live in my parish church. Her hymn-singing has blessed me and lifted my spirit through difficult times lately. I’m so thankful for her talent and timbre.
I didn't know till recently that Wesley originally wrote it to this tune. I used to sing Fairest Isle back in the 60s. I've always liked Maddy Prior ever since I heard her with Steeleye Span back in the early 70s. Her voice may have lost the freshness of youth but it's got richer in timbre.
I had completely forgotton that Love Divine was written for this tune. Got used to Blaenwern, which is lovely. This, the original, is special, bringing out and enhancing the words, as well as being a fine tune in itself. The arrangement is pretty much in period too.
"Fairest Isle" is recognizable as soon as they start playing. Love the song in its original form but Charles Wesley put it to good use. This group proves that.
@blackpoolrok It's either sung to 'Love Divine' which only has enough music for half a verse, so one has to sing the tune twice for each verse. It also goes to Blaenwern, this seems to be the preferred tune. watch?v=Y6hWmfR8dus&feature=related a Welsh tune on a welsh organ.
@@derningtona Thank you so much!! Purcell, of course.... It took 15 years to get an answer....but it is MUCH Appreciated!! BEECHER is the tune to which we sing it.....
Mm, well, Methodists call it 'Love Divine' too. It's by Charles Wesley. But the melody *does* sound like some other hymn, though I'm not sure which one.
Wonderful,so remote from the mad politics of the moment giving hope.
Maddy has amused , entertained me for all my working life. Thank God for people like her.
Spectacular a joying this era of debased music ...

@@rolandcolyer5199 She already has an MBE. I'd say that was recognition!

I believe you're right!

The words of this hymn-anthem were specifically written by Charles Wesley for "O Fairest Isle" a solo aria by PURCELL. So your only 50% correct.
What a complex mic.setup! I'm glad I was'nt mixing that one! Love and hugs to Maddy and the orchestra. Guy ex tc.

"Fairest isle, all isles excelling...."?
Definitely it IS Purcell's "Fairest Isle". You, Sir, have a good ear!!
Does anyone know the hymntune? It's not the one we sing the hymn to most often here in America...
Fairest Isle

Music of Charles Wesley? Sounds like Purcell to me.
