We honor the women and men who struggled and died for Irish Independence. Sinead owns this song. There have been many renditions, and all are beautiful, but hers stands alone. God save Ireland.
Sinead was born of this earth to sing this song. Her voice comes from a place deep in her soul and thus touches mine in a way mere words cannot define.
Holy shit what a perfect performance by Sinead & the Chieftains, and what an amazing song representing the fight/struggle for Irish independence. Love the Irish (I'm not Irish). Sinead killed it with her heavenly voice; of course she did. RIP Sinead/Shuhada, legend of Ireland and a beautiful misunderstood soul. This and her performance of Danny Boy are 2 of my favorites. Nobody did them better! Love from Canada, a lifelong fan.
I was born in the US from a Mother and a Father with Irish Parents. Came over in the early 1900s. A great grandfather was a Scot but lived in county Clare as a child. I’m extremely proud to have Irish blood. I cannot claim to be Irish however an unexplained emotion does over me often when music from times of Hardship in Ireland plays in my ears. My eye start clouding with tears, a terrible sorrow overcomes me, then an anger a deep anger based on hurt. I love Rugby nd became a huge fan when in Dublin 2003. When the Anthems play I cannot stop the tears. I’ll tell you that we are unexplainable creatures. The dna in my body passed down has passed the pain and sorrow as well. I’m not a big fan of the US. It’s been extremely hard to have prose when so many cultures are shoved in my face and forcing me to accept. Rest assure if Ireland called, I’d come. I don’t want this to offend anyone. I have a very unique last name and our family name was very small without a small part of both sides in Clare and Down.

@@lisejacquelinerigault2575 Did you knew that Irish resistance for a long time hoped for help from outside? I mean, obviousy, they were fighting biggest most powerful and vicious empire at the time. And ofc, Napoleon decided it was good idea to send ships to Ireland to help. But most of them died because of foggy dew, well, storm but you know :) and some were sunked by brits. So they sent smaller contingent later. Napoleon on his deadbad said that he would be better if he invaded Ireland with full force and not Egypt. And that is how Sinn Fein came to be. It means "We alone" meaning, they will not wait for outside help this time. I learned that by listening to Radio War Nerd podcast about it.

But I can feel every single emotion this beautiful song cares to mean and this music is totally relatable for me. As an Irish American ( and a Sagittarius , like Sinéad) and as one from Sinéad’s generation, I feel the pulse of our oppressed ancestors, our collective trauma, our gift of the gab and of music stream through her voice , so pure and brave and tragic…Your light in this world will be missed, Sinéad. Spare us. As an American you haven’t a clue, and none of this is about you. Check the ‘our’; the intensity of her voice is her experience, not yours. And she’d puke at the notion of an afterlife. As a tribute to Sinead this completely misses the mark.

As down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I
There armed lines of marching men
In squadrons passed me by
No pipe did hum
No battle drum did sound its loud tattoo
But the Angelus Bells o'er the Liffey swells
Rang out in the foggy dew
Right proudly high in Dublin town
Hung they out a flag of war
'Twas better to die 'neath that Irish sky
Than at Sulva or Sud-El-Bar
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through
While Brittania's Huns with their long range guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew
Their bravest fell and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide in the
Springing of the year
While the world did gaze with deep amaze
At those fearless men but few
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the foggy dew
And back through the glen, I rode again
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see n'more
But to and fro in my dreams I go
And I kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled, O glorious dead
When you fell in the foggy dew

What an absolutely breathtaking singer she was, every note perfectly in tune. Her voice sends shivers down my spine!
Rest in peace, Sinead. What a voice.
She will live forever through her music. Legend!
A beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. She’s gone too soon. May Sinéad finally have peace🕊️💕🌸
Sineád O'Connor does the best rendition of this song. She's absolutely amazing. What a great voice. I'll be playing it tomorrow for the 107th anniversary. She is soooooo fantastic!!!!!!!🇦🇺♥️🇮🇪
Luke Kelly in my opinion
@@jiltedjohn9294 Luke Kelly is good, but Sineád O'Connor puts more emotion into it.
@@vivianlemottee3291 More emotion maybe but his voice was far better than hers
Colm McGuiness did an even better version of this than both.
Devastated by the news of Sinéad's passing. Rip Sinéad.😪
I miss this incredible woman...
This is so beautiful and sad at the same time. What a voice this woman had.. RIP from Turkey.. she had one of the most honest voices I've heard.
How proud I am to be THE IRISHMAN.
Such beautyfull voice and talented , great loss same like Dolores.
That girl gives me shivers.
So much power behind that song, and Sinéad wields it with ease.
I am not even Irish (danish), and this brought tears to my eyes. 😢
What heartfelt beauty holds song.
And Sinead O’Connor. What incredible beauty in voice and soul. May she be remembered always. ❤
One of the most beautiful woman singing one of the most beautiful song ever sang.... And here we are...
I’m born and bred in Glasgow, but my parents were Irish and every night we sang that song after payers 😍🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️
Half Irish Half Scots... Proud to be half n half
Rip lady from 🇺🇸🇺🇸 my irish ancestors are so proud of you and so is my family ☘️
An Irish treasure that will never be forgotten. Rest easy now Sinead, I hope you heart is healed 🙏🏽🇮🇪
Stopped by Sinead's grave yesterday on way back from my aunt's funeral...Deansgrange Cemetary, Dublin. Had to come on here and play her. A legend gone before her time and greatly missed.
❤
We honor the women and men who struggled and died for Irish Independence. Sinead owns this song. There have been many renditions, and all are beautiful, but hers stands alone. God save Ireland.
Think what you like of her but she puts everything she has into a song and that's what makes her special...
I think like you.
I think the world of her and her activism is in line with her love of Ireland. A voice and person with guts
Not a fan of her at all, but she did kill this rendition. Props.
Her calling out the abuse in the Catholic Church very publicly way before it was widely recognized is great actually.
As a Protestant I think it’s great she called out corruption and immorality in the Catholic Church, but i regret her converting to Islam.
Irish singers always seem to perform with such passion , sincerity, and soul (never mind beauty and power) that theyre set apart from all others.
There are 800 years of persecution and attempted genocide behind that song and that voice, that’s the reason.
“…all our Wars are Happy, and all our Songs are Sad”
@@nicholasflynn5376 Very well said by you, the truth must be spoken and correct history never be forgotten
"the great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad,for all their wars are merry and all their songs are sad". G K Chesterton

Sinead was born of this earth to sing this song. Her voice comes from a place deep in her soul and thus touches mine in a way mere words cannot define.
Rest in peace, Sinead. There will never be another like her. She was amazing.
Ireland still awaits her freedom TaL

Nice to read 🇮🇪
Rest in peace angel of Ireland 😢 you were such a gorgeous voice and lady ❤
My sister wants to sing this at my grandfathers funeral. Tearing up just thinking about it.
Did your sister sing it. Rip to your grandad. From Vinny in Galway
I wanted this at mine, but as a French person, my friend said it would not be right, which to me is a great shame....
@@lisejacquelinerigault2575 Well tell your friend to kiss your ass. If its the last thing you want on earth, then have it. Im irish and i will go over and sing it meself. 🍀🍀🍀😊

Underrated for years. But the cream always comes to the top. What a brilliant Irish woman. Proud.
From DR Congo in Africa, but I feel myself Irish about the words on this sound!
You know a singer has real talent when they sound good live and Sinead certainly does!
Unlike no other singer her voice was so strong yet so clear without screaming the words.
Sinead and Judith Durham, power, power and beauty in a clear tone.
Marvellous rendition by sinead. Great irish song, sung by a great irish woman.
Sinead & The Chieftains will go down as the definitive rendition of this tune. Absolutely perfect.
Gracias por tu arte y sobre todo por tu valentía. Descansa en paz querida Sinéad. Se te extrañara siempre.
that song is a tribute not only a tribute to the great generation and any Irishman that drew breath, but to the resanance and pure voice of sinaed and her pure genius, so sad of her passing and so proud of her to .R I P
This woman. She accepted the task of absorbing the world’s pain and reprocessing it into the saddest and most beautiful art for the rest of us to contemplate. This lifelong endeavor is killing her now, so remember, she did it for us!
She is one of the singers you'll never forget. Bit of tears and I am not even Irish but Dutch
Man I'm not even remotely related with Irish culture and anything that has a connection with it, I'm Turkish. But I can feel every single emotion this beautiful song cares to mean and this music is totally relatable for me. Thanks Conor for introducing us your country's beautiful culture respect to the Irish for standing their ground and for being rebellious brave people!

Go to your son’s open arms on the other side. You are free.
Spare us. As an American you haven’t a clue, and none of this is about you. Check the ‘our’; the intensity of her voice is her experience, not yours. And she’d puke at the notion of an afterlife. As a tribute to Sinead this completely misses the mark.
