For the cost of a gtx 1070/1080, the razer core, and the razer laptop you could just get one of the new pascal based laptops launching soon with comparable peformance Razer logic..
However, you may not want to lug a 10 pound gaming laptop with 20 fans and blast processing around. No manufacturer is going to cram a 1080 in a laptop the size of the blade.
I'm cool with it if it finances content creators I like, with relevant truthful presentation of the product. Or would you rather watch the same advertisement for every video?

its ATI HD 6990 its 2 gpus just like gtx 690 or titan z or r9 295x. No wonder its big and hot. Also gtx 480 is the most power hungry card and pretty hot

That would depend on the CPU architecture on said MacBook and resolution, some MacBooks have 4K displays so a high-end modern GPU will actually not be a bottleneck.
+XZXZ The resolution would have nothing to do with bottlenecking. It wouldn't work with the MacBook since I don't think the USB-C port supports thunderbolt 3. A Kaby Lake MacBook Pro on the other hand could theoretically work if many of the rumors are true.
+XZXZ I doubt any MacBook has a 4K display. The current 13" MacBook Pro has a Quad HD resolution and the 15" one has a bit higher resolution. The other MacBooks don't have nearly as high a resolution.
This is my thoughts on it as well. For example, college kids. They would want a portable lightweight laptop with excellent battery life while in classes, but at the end of the day, coming back to the dorm or apartment, they want to sit down and enjoy some high end games, and the Razer Core, does just that. With laptops utilizing mobile versions of Desktop GPU's (such as Skylake), CPU bottlenecks aren't really a problem, especially when you remove the throttling caps set by your power profile.
Andrew Hunt The issue not all laptops have the necessary ports to take advantage of this. Ultrabooks and similar form factor PC's like Microsoft's Surface line can benefit from this heavy, specially the Pro and Book models but lack USB-C w/Thunderbolt to take advantage of the Razer Core.
Its so much easier to get info about Razers products via your vids than their website! I like the idea of being able to game on a laptop w core, wired keyboard/mouse, wired Ethernet, and external display! This is how I use my laptop right now and its great! I just unplug when I want to go mobile, which some might say is a hassle, but its nice not having to switch computers!
I'm Using the 2020 edition of the Razor Core Chroma X with a MSI Nvidia RTX 2070 Super Gaming on a 2019 16" MacBook Pro (on Windows 10 Bootcamp) 64GB with the 5500M dGPU. Its a good solution for me and I'm happy to pay for the premium. It can only be plugged in after booting and when you connect it it disconnect all devices currently connected on your USB ports including hard disks , mice and keyboards, even devices connected via Bluetooth. you need to revisit this review with modern laptops with more mature Thunderbolt 3 drivers and latest high end GPUs like the RTX 3090
I'm not gonna rule it out, but i'm going to go with extremely unlikely... As far as I can guess, they would need to have Thunderbolt drivers for the Core itself, an adapter from TB3 to TB2, and they would need drivers for whatever PCIe devices you want to use in the Core. Considering that neither AMD nor Nvidia even give you the option of downloading macOS drivers, it's almost a foregone conclusion.

The thing is bloody massive, and loud. What I would love to see is an MXM form factor graphics card enclosure. A device which would allow you to use an MXM graphics board with a laptop that doesn't have dedicated graphics built in, in a much smaller size enclosure, and quieter cooling, AND the ability to use a desktop GPU.

Most can use this for mini pcie, where the wireless card usually goes www.banggood.com/Mini-PCI-E-Version-V8_0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-p-1011222.html
Here it is 4 years later and I bought the Core X for $300. The reason I chose it is because my company always allows us to have the latest greatest I7 Dell laptops with (currently) 16 gigs of RAM. I don't have to build a custom gaming rig. I can use my work laptop, my wife can plug in her work laptop and do her video editing and graphic design. Then when it comes time to do business, I just unhook from it and let the CPU handle the regular graphics load. When I get a new company laptop I'll just load the GPU drivers on it, and continue on with no changes.
And most macs with 2 or more thunderbolt ports are also capable of sli ability, many have done it. The Akitio Thunder 2 pcie enclosure is widely popular in the apple community. It's quite small so most people take its internals and use it in a larger enclosure so a full size video card will fit. But people have been using MacBooks of all variety with eGPU for years
I plugged one end of a thunderbolt cable into my macbook pro, the other in a dongle which goes to a displayport connector on my graphics card. Works perfectly
Apple's implementation of Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2 was meant to be able to do these sorts of things.. but it never really happened. And no Apple laptop yet has Thunderbolt 3. So...you're half right, sort of.
Why the laughs? He is right. Just google "Squinks's macbook pro 780ti sli techinferno", should be the first result. DIY external graphics have been made for years by enthusiast people. For me it seems that those new graphics adapters were made only to gather money.
Hey Linus, great video! I was wondering if you know if a Mac, specifically a MacBook/MacBook Pro, running Windows through boot camp would be compatible with the razer core? I would love to see that tested! Thanks for the great videos!
It's for people who want a laptop as their main pc so they can bring it to class or work whatever but can still use it to play games at home without needing another pc
It's not pointless. It's for people who need the portability of a laptop every day but want the power of a GPU that doesn't suck dick when they want to play games. If it were pointless, there wouldn't be 3 different companies making products that do the same fucking thing.
You only carry the laptop. A 970m is more than fast enough for most thing you would do on the go. This has been a thing for buiness laptop's for a while(docking stations, not hotswap gpu's) and many companies give all the users laptops and docking stations so they can use it at their desktop, and then take it to a meeting on home if they want.
I like your videos so much Linus because of how detailed and thoroughly explained they are. Also, it's pretty obvious how much you know about your "stuff". According to the video itself, I'd love to see this Core/external GPU tacking off. Sadly, I'm deep lock with macOS and Apple doesn't seem to care about any of this.
LTT - asking the tough questions to companies who don't give a f--k. Seriously though glad you went in depth with this, love the possibilities TB 3.1 can provide.
My God, Linus, you damn right hit the point - the technology behind Core is CRAZY cool, but Razer being a pioneer in this needs to make it cost a lot to have it's money back that they spent on R&D. Normal people that will not spend that much money on tech will just have to wait :) And BTW I was waiting for such a video for a long time :)

Pink looks freaking awesome, Linus best recommendation of all
another great video from Linus! I'd like to see a video comparing all of the biggest cases available on the market, compare the HAF X, 900D, STH10 and others
They (Razer) don't give a crap about compatibility with other devices now (testing and optimization cost money and time), they were the first to hit the market, they primarily want YOU to BUY their laptops and boost their laptop sales, in time, external gpu enclosures will become highly competitive market so it will probably force them to do better, but now, they have a temporary monopoly position ... and I am glad u are pushing them Linus, good job man
Finally a proper and in-depth video review :O. Kudos! I also like how Linus does not automatically recommend gimmicky doodads like this, while most other techies would automatically say "WOW it`s great"... i also adore him for subtle hate on Apple products xD. That`s my man :D.
I really enjoyed this video Linus. I'm really glad you dove into all these possible scenarios with the price tag as your excuse. absolutely legitimate.
I really want a 2016 blade, I have been obsessed with this decision last two weeks.. so darn portable and sexy and the idea of getting the core next year when cheaper and having semi-mobile VR is appealing! Trying to get one from Amazon to try for 30 days and may return If I don't like it or Pascal stuff drops.
So here is a guide for people who are looking for an alternative to a blade stealth + core + graphics card (assuming you don't already own one or multiple in the equation): Razer Blade Stealth = $1000 USD + Razer Core = $500 USD + RX480 (Pretty cheap card) = $200~ = $1700 Total ----------------------------- Build a Desktop PC for $1000 ($700 remaining) Buy a half decent laptop for $500~ ($200 remaining) Buy a 1TB external hard drive with the remaining money.
I'm actually evaluating the Core X Chroma right now for work as a hotdesk GPU/docking station for small teams. Basically, instead of everyone in a team demanding a wacky custom desktop to go with their standardised laptop, they'd get this to share for CAD applications, rendering, etc. So far the testing is going well but it'd be a big help if the GPU would do *something* without the specialist drivers installed or if Windows Update could see it well enough to pull down drivers itself.
Please, cover more on this topic. It's great and I've been interested in it for some time. You could do some recap of the tech up until now, when there is some advent of wide support for eGPU. Could feature past GUS or ASUS XG station - that thing looked great!
Nice work! I got a Core last month and am rather disappointed with the CPU bottlenecking on my Blade Stealth, but I do plan on buying a more capable Blade 2016 or Blade with 1060 to use with it. I'm fascinated with the new technology the Core provides and bought one just for the sake of its cool factor rather than actually needing a gaming dock, as I have a custom built desktop already. The ability to pack a Core with high end desktop GPU and a lightweight laptop into a bag and travel with it is a great option though. I tried putting a Radeon HD 5870 in my Core and it did not work at all, was not detected by the PC. I took this to mean that PCIe 2.x cards were unsupported, but perhaps this is incorrect.
Interesting. I really like the concept of the Core. It's what I have wanted. for years. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to upgrade, the cost for something like this will have come down, and compatibility issues will be solved.
Linus and team- Thank you for this review and has answered all of my questions. I think the Core is a huge step into the future as well as portability will be key for almost everyone!
Great video. Gamers may not be effected by this much right Now, but for content creators, these devices are Huge. Nearly every major 3d rendering software supports GPU rendering now, and you can render on All available graphics cards, so long as they have enough VRAM. You can fit more than you might think on only 6GB of VRAM, but you'll want something more like 12GB+, which is still pretty pricey, or impossible to come by. This also allows you to have a second graphics card sitting there to plug into different machines. I've got two machines, if they both had thunderbolt 3, I could just plug that into whichever one I needed to render on. This could trickle down to Gamers as well because a game engine Could use one graphics card to effect real-time play, where the other one is focused on raytraced calculations like global illumination calculations, or using it to calculate physics for secondary objects, making the entire experience more realistic without taking a hit on gameplay. Having those types of calculations done on two different cards could significantly speed up the process and allow for much higher quality. That's still pretty new, but could be a fun way to accomplish it. But that is often done in content creation now. Different cards assigned to different tasks, or All cards assigned to one more brute force task.
$100-200 would be a reasonable price
no one wants free pokecoins
+Shamika Jeffers wanna get reported?! Cause you just did
+Shamika Jeffers Outta here!
i would be perfectly fine with paying up to $250 for the Core
$179 Alienware amp at best buy
Its funny how Linus answers his own question and also complements the question saying ''Great Question."

+ReKT ReViVe I never said anybody's going to be bringing the core around with them.
no

well it's huge and probably runs insanely hot...

What are string biases?
Year 2189. Humanity has achieved space flight. Hologramic projectors are the new standard. USB 8.0 confirmed. We met aliens and colonized Mars. Apple announced their new external graphics amplifier with a non-swappable graphics card and a proprietary port.
now we just need the proprietary port casue they just released their graphics amplifier with non-swappable graphics card hahahah

Gsync IS supported on laptop (mobile) GPUs, my 980M equipped G751JY also has it.
Who said they didn't? It is lol.

this video was soooo much more informative than your "best motherboard to buy" video . I appreciate your investigation, questions, and testing Linus
Off-grid gaming challenge request:

Bonus:

Imagine being on vacation being completely disconnected while still being able to play games with friends on site. (With that low LAN ping as an added bonus)
Linus literally described me, I have a core paired with a Lenovo P50 and a GTX 1060. Portability when I need it and power when I want it.
Can you go over the advantages/disadvantages and why or why not a mineral oil submerged PC is a good idea?
+Bruhtatoess we have a whole series on this where we oil cool a pc
+LinusTechTips maybe I should've checked first... thanks :p
I barely understand what you are saying, but you are great.
I've got to say, this was one of the best videos you have made in a long time!
Can you do a tutorial for how to connect the Core to the Nuc properly
Videos like these were what made me love LinusTechTips in the first place.

By far, the most informative review of the Razer Core I could find on TH-cam.
Finally, an original LTT review, missed those
2:22 Can we all just appreciate how perfectly the design of the 6990 blends with the Core? Damn that's a nice looking combo
$499 is already a cpu, mobo, RAM, and psu itself.
But it's harder o lug it all around.
still overpriced tho
Linus just made the shoe box PC in the video its literally the same size as the Core
+GuardianLords ikr
however in my experience mini itx mobos and such cases are usually more expensive than a standard size mobo or case
+BBQGodfather Cases yes, but mini itx motherboards are cheaper than normal ones
This kind of video is what puts you all above most tech channels. No one else went into the nuances of eGPUs.
About time to bring in the more detailed reviews guys... keep it up.

for us in sweden the new razer costs 2500£..
BBQGodfather Yep...

Be careful hating on Apple there, Linus... after all, without Apple, Thunderbolt likely would never have gotten off the ground
Apple is a money thirsty product rrcycling company slowly failing
I second that
yes lets praise apple for making thunderbolt, lol
Thunderbolt was made by Intel, Apple just adapted it first...
+T Swag (ThanoricOfficial) Apple was the company that popularized it, so the first guys comment still stands

I think they upload when they leave the studio and it takes time to upload high quality videos
Because timezones
it uploaded just after 5:00 pm in Australia

According to the last WAN Show, it takes them 5 minutes to upload. They have a fiber connection.
the editing in this video was an assault on my brain.
I wonder if this'll work on a Macbook Air or Pro with Thunderbolt 2?
nope
todd pacheco I kinda figured as such. I'll just use the Thunder2 box instead.
I think it will, if someone cares to write some drivers.

most people don't have expresscard anymore.
this video is fantastic. answered a lot of questions that i had and MUCH more helpful than Razer themselves
Linus your forgot one thing... will it works with the new Macbook ?
If you bought a mac for gaming you fucked up
no thunderbolt 3 on the macbook so the answer would be no
what!? no thunderbolt 3?? Apple is fucking stupid if that is the case

Such a pointless product. It stops being a laptop when you hook that hunk of overpriced crap up to it.
It's for people who want a laptop as their main pc so they can bring it to class or work whatever but can still use it to play games at home without needing another pc
It's not pointless. It's for people who need the portability of a laptop every day but want the power of a GPU that doesn't suck dick when they want to play games. If it were pointless, there wouldn't be 3 different companies making products that do the same fucking thing.
avanasear But then you have to carry the laptop with them, *as well as* a heavy metal box with a GPU in it. It's stupid imo
+Rhys Black You don't have to carry it. Leave it at home. It's not like you're gonna be gaming while you're on the go.

I watch these videos but don't understand a thing..
Pink looks freaking awesome, Linus best recommendation of all
good work probably the only review of this tech on the net right now!
Answered all my question I had and more about the core. Team Linus for the win, great video.
These are the kind of videos that you do everything right. Nice job.
Now this is a good old nice techy review. Lots of things tested and tried out - Nice!
another great video from Linus! I'd like to see a video comparing all of the biggest cases available on the market, compare the HAF X, 900D, STH10 and others
When you said “gtx 480” i kept thinking the rtx 4080 and i was like whaaaaa
The thumbnail told me everything I needed to know
They (Razer) don't give a crap about compatibility with other devices now (testing and optimization cost money and time), they were the first to hit the market, they primarily want YOU to BUY their laptops and boost their laptop sales, in time, external gpu enclosures will become highly competitive market so it will probably force them to do better, but now, they have a temporary monopoly position ... and I am glad u are pushing them Linus, good job man
man the bezels on screens 7 years ago were unholy
I like these deep-dive style videos. MAKE MORE!
Finally a proper and in-depth video review :O. Kudos! I also like how Linus does not automatically recommend gimmicky doodads like this, while most other techies would automatically say "WOW it`s great"... i also adore him for subtle hate on Apple products xD. That`s my man :D.
Deepdive should be a series where they do really in depth reviews.
One of the best videos you guys have made in a while!
Very nice deep digging there linus, interesting future for this sort of tech
So here is a guide for people who are looking for an alternative to a blade stealth + core + graphics card (assuming you don't already own one or multiple in the equation):
Razer Blade Stealth = $1000 USD
+
Razer Core = $500 USD
+
RX480 (Pretty cheap card) = $200~
=
$1700 Total
-----------------------------
Build a Desktop PC for $1000
($700 remaining)
Buy a half decent laptop for $500~
($200 remaining)
Buy a 1TB external hard drive with the remaining money.
Good reviewing. This is the kind of electronics reviewing I want, very thorough.
I asked one of these questions. He's talking directly to me!!! Go Linus.
deep dive is a pretty good name for this video
The nostalgic cards on the desk!!
Very informative video Linus, thanks for all your effort in testing and posting videos.
Very nice, informative and straight forward video. props Linus.
I like these kind of vids where you dig deep.
+LinusTechTips love when you do things even just for science
Awesome video Linus! Exactly what I was needing to know!
Linus I hope you revisit eGPUs when the AKiTiO Node eGFX comes out. I'm putting a Titan Pascal in mine. Can't wait.
I loved that project! I was counting down the days to when there were going to be something confirmed! Of course nothing came out.
You guys should start a vlog channel. I would watch it, really miss the moving vlogs
Interesting. I really like the concept of the Core. It's what I have wanted. for years. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to upgrade, the cost for something like this will have come down, and compatibility issues will be solved.
We need a Razer Core V2 review. It just came out, and adds a second Thunderbolt controller to deal with the overhead issues.
I really enjoyed this episode Thank you for making such great content. The quality is always improving.
