    owner of a graphics amp here. I travel for work so I can play a game in the hotel, use my laptop for work then come home plug it in and play on 4k. it totally makes sense for some people. not like I am going to take a pc on a carry on at the airport and bring a laptop, that would be a pain at security. I love it.

      Darren Hagford Does the Alienware external GPU amplifier work with any other laptop? That'd be my question, even if I don't have a laptop at all, but I do have a PC with a 1080Ti. I want to know if it was possible to use my old 970 for a shit laptop.

      Darren Hagford how does taking a nearly mini itx sized external GPU solution make much of a difference when going through security? At least the AMP has a price that isn't more expensive then building a dedicated system.

    • @darren429858

      Robert T I take just my laptop. the graphics amp stays home. I can play most games fine 1080p on the laptop then get home and use the amp with my 980ti works really good.

    I have an Alienware 15R3 with a GTX 1060 built in and a Graphics Amplifier with a GTX 1080 Ti. My setup with the Amplifier is within 3% of a desktop build and I can just unplug and take my laptop anywhere and game with the 1060 without having to worry about installing games/updates, save files, etc. It's worth the price I paid ($2000) in my opinion.

      I've got the same exact laptop lol.. High five =D. Though what i really do wonder is whether the amp actually bottlenecks the gpu. Jayztwocents did a video on the Core and it performed much worse as when compared to a tower.

    • @tiberiusjustinianroberts2863
      @tiberiusjustinianroberts2863 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Absurd Tiger Well....Now I've got a tower as well due to the fact that my brother.....passed away not too long ago...he wasn't even fucking 17 jesus christ....never mind anyways. I build my brother a PC but since he's not here with me anymore...It's now mine. My plan is to actually change out the CPU for an AMD Threadripper when it comes out and to change out the GPU for Vega when it comes out. Gonna be pretty interesting for me.

      i have the same laptop with a 1070ti in the amplifier and i have to agree. especially with how tiny the laptop isand the power it already has inside of it. mine is the 764p model so everything plays perfectly at maxed out setting on the laptop alone. with the amplifier im playing at 1440p 144hz

      You can already unplug the wireless adapter and use that pcie lane for an external graphics card, I haven't found any reviews doing it with high end stuff but I'm sure it can't be that bad if it's using a pcie lane instead of rerouting everything.
      You can get cheap cables and do some 3d printing for an enclosure (or just use some small PC case and adapt a few parts)
      Only disadvantage is having to disassemble the laptop and most likely replace a card (like the wireless adapter), effectively limiting the ease of use (besides the obvious putting together an enclosure on your own).

      I tweeted it to him and luke a few days ago: shocker, no response yet. If enough people blast them about it, it would be great. I'm thinking of pairing one with a Dell Latitude E6420 I have laying around with one of the fastest Sandy i7 quads of that gen, and you can get one of those refurbed or used for 200-300 bucks. They would be an absolutely amazing candidate for such a device.

    3:50 _"We ran each benchmark 10 times to ensure blah blah blah...."_
    4:03 _"We used identical drivers and settings"_
    Sooooo am I just imagining the different driver screenshot? at 6:17?
    Left: Driver Version 22.21.13.81*89* (ForceWare 381.*89*)
    Right: Driver Version 22.21.13.81*65* (ForceWare 381.*65*)
    it might be just a month newer but a lot can change in a "insignificant update" depending on how many Doritos you sacrificed to the coding interns. but the biggest problems is the fact that you tried to claim you used identical drivers...

    • @sparkplug1018
      @sparkplug1018 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I guess he was referring to the main version? While id agree things can change, I can't see it possibly being anything significant in such a minor update.

    • @svampebob007
      @svampebob007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      " minor update"
      although as they pointed out, it's way more probable that it's just about the connection, but identical drivers leaves no room for any doubt. if they hand not mentioned that they took care to use identical drivers I would not care to point it out (since it's probably insignificant) but since they did I'm calling Chekhov's Gun.

    I own a 2017 Alienware 17 R4 with a 1070 graphics card right now and I have no use for the External graphics amplifier at this time. In 2 or 3 years though, it will be a different story and I will be happy to shell out 700-900 dollars total for that next gen high-end graphics card and the amplifier as the rest of the laptop will be far from irrelevant at that time. (a gaming desktop is not an option for me as I travel a lot and have a job that I bring my laptop to).

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya, but by then the question might be if TB3 can support the bandwidth of those new cards to a level that appreciably exceeds the performance your built-in 1070.

    • @EagleEyeHunts
      @EagleEyeHunts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought my Alienware Graphics Amplifier two month before that video was submitted. It is equipped with an ASUS GTX 1070 Strix OC. The Strix doesn't fit in properly because its Board is to high, so the AGA doesn't close completely. I got used to it, so i don't care about that (should have measured it before). One thing I absolutely hated was the front fan. It ALWAYS runs at full RPM and is loud as hell. The solution for that was a BeQuiet! Silent Wings 92mm fan. I swapped the original fan for that one... The only thing is, that i had to connect it to the fan-controller of my Strix (it has two). Then the PSU is trash. It tended to shut down my whole rig during summer because it got to hot. So i swapped that one for a Corsair CX650m PSU. Now everything works great. All in all the modding costs around 70€ (about 75$).

    I'm really disappointed at Linus for doing this video from this perspective. For those who are familiar with eGPUs, we all know the bottleneck of the TB3 connection and putting anything over a 1060/580 is a waste using the internal monitor. Even for external monitor I would recommend against getting anything above a 1070. With Linus' really big viewerbase, many of those who don't know as much about eGPUs could look at these numbers and say: "TB3 throttles the 1080Ti and is super expensive!", thus jumping to the conclusion that eGPUs are not worth considering.
    I agree that TB3 eGPUs are expensive but not as expensive as everyone thinks. I got my Mantiz Venus TB3 eGPU Dock for $300, almost half the price of the massively overpriced Razer Core and on paper works as well as if not better than the Razer Core.
    Secondly, while I understand this video is about the comparison between Alienware's Amp and TB3, only including the 1080Ti in the benchmarks is... a bit sad for me as an eGPU fan. Yes the technology throttles the best card on the market and yes it is currently very expensive. But prices will go down in the future and there's definitely a market (no matter how niche) for people who benefit from eGPUs. From the comments section it seems that people might have a more negative view about this exciting technology because of this video.

  • @everydaytech1082
    @everydaytech1082 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    great video with surprising results. I personally would have loved to have a standard rig that had comparable specs to the laptops just to see how far they lagged behind it. I know you did this with the core on its own but would have liked to see it thrown into this comparison. Also I noticed that the camera shot at the beginning showed the blade propped up with cardboard while running. What was this for? if it was for thermals than it would skew your data and it was never mentioned.

I don't see him telling us to use eGPUs instead of laptops with 10 series graphics cards.

    • @SapphireRacer
      @SapphireRacer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the only reason I can see this video having a point.... If you get a video with a 1060 and upgrade it later. Or maybe when the 1100 series graphics cards come out, using those. But for now would someone spend all that money on a 1060 laptop and then buy an external enclosure and then buy a 1080 or 1080 TI? He is going to make another video (he already has made one and maybe more) on this when the next gen graphics come out and that would have a good reason.

      Business, yes. Consumer? Not so much. It took me a week to get someone on the phone when my mothers' laptop gave out and they basically told me that it's my own problem since it was out of their 1-year warranty and they wouldn't even take it for repair. However, law states that a product should be 'solid', which depends on the product type, price and whatnot. So I had to contact legal counsel who agreed that a $1500 laptop should last longer than that year, and they contacted Dell. If those are steps you need to take to be assisted by a company you're doing something incredibly wrong.

      Don't get me wrong about Alienware. Alienware before Dell took over were great company and better than Razer. Yeah their hardware were always been over price but you are not only pay for their logo, brand and the hardware from what we are pay for because Alienware have 24/7 tech support, free engineer visit, free upgrade program, and many thing you can apply from their provider in their customer service if you have any problem on it. So their hardware was over price based on what Alienware provide on their hardware back then but it worth to buy. That's why Pre Dell Alienware were something special and much better than Dell Alienware so I miss their good old days. Nowadays, Alienware have been fucked up so Dell is the worst thing that happened on Alienware. So, we can say Alienware were the victim by Dell after all. Imagine if Alienware were still independent, then Alienware would still be better than every gaming PC today so their product would still worth to buy and their soul would still living. Even their customer service would still be something special from what they have

    Very surprising results, and I'm glad I came across this video. Looking at prices, there's no question the Alienware setup is worlds cheaper, but it's a proprietary (or at least less common) connection, which in and of itself can be a big problem. The Razer is the Cadillac option, and I'd probably still get that even at the higher price, since it's plug and play, and while I like great video performance, I'm not looking for the absolute bleeding edge. But this was a very interesting review and an aspect of eGPUs I hadn't considered previously. Thanks!
