    For those that don’t understand why people don’t just buy a Desktop;
    I am a Web Developer, sometimes I work in a coffee shop, sometimes I work at home. On rare occasions, I meet up with clients at their business, and I use my Mac to show off things.
    I can’t bring my desktop everywhere. I would love to have a eGPU Enclosure to throw my 1070TI in (which is in my desktop), so I can have that better performance for various tasks like Video Processing on the go.

    Please stop reviewing fortnite and rocket league. They seem to be very common in your videos and they're both not demanding, Fortnite specifically was made to be able to run on a wide range of devices. Buying an external gpu enclosure and a high end graphics card is way too expensive and plain silly to test out on games like those. Throwing in more graphically intensive games would be much more helpful in observing the limits of these setups (yes I know it depends on the graphics card itself as well as the thunderbolt limits). I have a reasonably capable gaming pc so personally it's not for me but I don't see how someone could spend that much money on this just to play Fortnite, surely they'd wanna try games like Witcher 3, Shadow of war and the like if they're spending around £800-1000 for an eGPU (300) and high end graphics card (500-700) but still want a laptop as their main driver. You should do brief mentions of FPS in those kind of games. As it stands, this video gives very little info for very expensive things (to the average consumer).

    • @unkieG
      @unkieG 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      I guess because Fortnite is one of the biggest and fastest growing games in the world right now, casually and competitively. People everywhere are searching for "best laptop/pc setup for fortnite" and seeing what they can get. Those searches lead them to videos with titles and subjects like this one. That equates to more views. A couple years ago the same thing was happening with League of legends and its kind of where the whole "But can it run Crysis" meme came from. You would be surprised how many people almost solely play MOBAS and FPS arena type games and don't play anything else really. It's annoying and I see where you're coming from but its just business and what can generate the most views RIGHT NOW that is making creators do these kind of videos.

      Preach it brother! No seriously, he always reviews these casual games and would be cool to review more hardcore demanding games. If you spend that cash you should play something a little better than a kid's game. Also those games can easily run on something like an MX150 or GTX 1050 no problem.

    I think this is the first external graphics enclosure I really, really like. Not only do you get triple card support, meaning that pretty much anything will work at this point, you also get full power delivery to your system. And the price being $300 is much more reasonable. That's about as much as an Akitio Node cost me when I factored in an additional power brick for my laptop. This is a lot higher quality than that too, of course.

    going off of my own experiences with this particular eGPU, I'd say that eGPUs the way that they are currently are for a specific person based on how you'd answer this question.
    a.) are you constantly on the go and do you always take your laptop with you?
    b.) are you a PC gamer ?
    d.) do you like to take your video games on the road with you?
    c.) do you need a professional graphics card for CAD, Rendering, Video Editing, etc without having to own thousands of dollars in other computers and equipment to do it?
    If you answered yes to two out of the 4 questions then it might make sense to consider getting a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU (which is what most of the eGPU market is comprised of at this time) With Thunderbolt 4 on the horizon, it will become a much more exciting prospect to getting an eGPU since the bandwidth will be considerably faster.
    However, if you didn't answer yes to 2 of the questions above, I'd say its a hard pass. eGPUs are meant to preserve the laptop experience without compromising heavy duty graphics processing for professional applications and games. Its philosophy is use your laptop as is but when you need more horsepower, dock it and to preserve it by taking all of the graphics load and heat out of the laptop and onto the eGPU. Think of it like souping up a muscle car.

    The core x might supercharge your laptop but will also burn your pocket

  • @TLeonLT
    @TLeonLT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the biggest problem of the eGPU is not the 4x PCIE or the price of the enclosure but the limitation of the low-voltage mobile CPU like intel's U series. Even with more cores added to the CPU itself, the power and thermal are still limited. Playing Fortnite and other games with light CPU usage is fine for this setup, but playing more CPU-intensive games like Witcher 3 and Watchdog 2 would not be so ideal. Intel's HQ series are better suited for these kind of games, but usually laptops with HQ grade CPU are usually equipped with better graphics in the first place.

    • @stopthrm
      @stopthrm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it might not be 'ideal' but honestly if you get a workstation style laptop like a dell xps, precision, or thinkpad carbon you could load it up with a 4 or 6 physical core CPU and forego the onboard dedicated gpu to use an eGPU instead. Sure you probably won't get insane framerates but it shouldn't be slow or clunky either...

    It would be cool to get only the Thunderbolt 3 PCB from one of those GPU boxes for like 50$ and then use any power supply, case... Since you arent gonna carry it anywhere you could just 3D print a mount for that PCB and GPU and keep the PSU anywhere. Keep it all connected to a monitor, keyboard, mouse.. and just connect the Thunderbolt cable when youre home :)

    I just bought one of these and am planning on putting 2070 super inside to use with my razer blade stealth. The nice part about using an RTX card is that it has a usb -c port on the back so I could buy the cheaper one and still be able to have an extra port :D Now I'll have a portable gaming rig I can bring to the cottage and hook up VR with for some awesome drinking nights. Man I'm excited! Oh yeah Austin you can get 6 foot 40gbs thunderbolt 3 cables, there are a few companies on amazon that make them and you can also get one from razer as well. Only downside is they are stupid expensive, like 80-90 canadian pesos for one. So like 60 bucks american.

    I have a quick question (that will probably never get an answer to) ... How do these things work with workstation grade Quadro cards? I haven't seen a single video or article displaying the compatibility. Apple uses a lot of render comparisons and certainly associates the compatibility with gaming... But what about content creation, Cinema 4D, Premiere, After Effects rendering, etc???
    I don't see anything online highlighting the performance of these enclosures with those mediums.

    The point of an eGPU is to have the flexibility of upgrading your video card to advance years of extended laptop life. And spending huge cash for a high end video card in a laptop is never going to give you the same performance as a full size external card. Yes, there is a performance hit, but if you drive it to an external monitor it's still pretty handsome output. When you buy your next laptop, your eGPU continues along for the ride so you don't have to splurge yet again on a massive expenditure. Also, if you're laptop ever gets lost or stolen, you still have a nice eGPU safely at home. Bonus: some eGPUs also double as an I/O hub, so it reduces laptop cable hassles for peripherals.

    I have an immediate tech question. Don't think I'm stupid for asking this... So I just built a new gaming pc but the old one I've been using is so caked up in dust, duster doesn't work and I don't have an air compressor. As far as the CPU, GPU and PSU that all have fans, could I spray the entire system down with a water hose then let it dry for a month before using it? I'm pretty sure the PSU can hold a charge so I don't want to mess it up but it's caked up in dust the most from the last place I lived with smokers. I'm sure giving it a month before turning it on afterwards would have it completely dry but how long should I leave it unplugged before all the power is drained and I can start and can I do this without shorting it out? Asking all the smart tech guys..

    It is MASSIVE! At that size (And price) It starts making sense looking into building a mini itx system and walking with a portable display. The Gigabyte gaming box makes entirely more sense as an eGPU, it's actually portable, I don't even think I can fit that in a backpack, do I need to walk around with a suitcase just to play games on the move? And if it's designed to sit on a desk, AND to get the full benefit you should run through an external monitor, exactly what is the point of it? Build a desktop.
    I want to like Razer, but they seem to be going out of their way to rip people off, like they're pushing it as far as possible until you actually say something, and no one says anything so they keep going and we literally end up with a PCIe to Thunderbolt adapter ($10-20)and a 600w psu ($70) in a 'nice' case ($100 at most) Just the maths to do it myself makes this pointless, aren't these companies supposed to give us value? If I can build it cheaper than the company as an individual, it's pretty fair to say they're doing it wrong.

    When testing the difference between an external gpu and integrated graphics.. you DON'T test it with fortnite and rocket league. You test it with AAA titles that are really demanding such as Rise of the Tomb Raider
