Meanwhile, up the road from the Kingdom Trails...
Vermont has a TON of great riding and I was seriously torn as to where I would be going this time around. As I left Maine I saw that the Kingdom Trails were nearby. I've heard so much about it that I felt it was my obligation to ride those fabled trails.
And then I got there and I really couldn't figure out what would be a great ride. It was uppy downy blue squarey stuff all over again! I considered hitting up a bike shop to ask for help but the one I passed had a lot of people inside and out without masks, no thanks. Trailforks has a 30 mile ride that's supposed to be good, no thanks.
And then I saw my savior, two double black diamond trails off the top of Burke Mountain. My prayers to the dirt gods were answered!

“...... I’m not doing it!, I’m not doing it, not this time.” 🤣🤣 that was hilarious, most of us, if not all of us have been there. You are riding a trail you don’t know and get hung up on something then look down & go,”... hell no I’m not doing that” not that you can’t but, that you lost your momentum, you didn’t see it coming and where your got hung is not a good place to start again to do it. I like your videos for that honesty.

Thanks for being honest about trails, I have been to places that were hyped up and was so disappointed. Big props to you for getting up and down these trails on your own. Im the worse at directions and still get lost in trails that I have ridden for years. Make sure to hit me when you get back to So Cal so we can do another ride I have a few places I want to take you.

Really love watching as many of these as possible. Thx! Quick point though: you regularly mention how you wish the MTB community would ”organize” like the golf community to build more and better facilities and terrain, etc...but also are bummed by the charges for parking, park passes, etc (mentioned in this vid a few times). I’m sure you are aware, but good to point out I’d think, that fees like those are what helps to make the best trails, terrain, facilities, etc possible. Golf is an expensive sport/activity/hobby (much more so than MTB riding). I always like to support the fees and fully appreciate and understand why they are there, and usually happy to contribute, as long as the $ is put to good use. Keep loading videos and I’ll keep watching (especially when I can’t ride as much in the winter, here in Colorado)...thx again!!!

Would have been nice if you made your viewers aware KT is only allowing specific counties in New England and no other state to ride the trails. They only have a few parking areas because you have to sign in and tell them which county you’re coming from so they can track what’s going on. If you park in undesignated areas, you will cause even more problems as we have already lost almost 100 miles of trails due to riders being so disrespectful to land owners.

  • @malarky6455
    @malarky6455 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

I usually love your videos usually, but Vermont is a magical place and You've done it a bit of a disservice. Kingdom trails aren't really that confusing - You pay to access the trails because the KT is a joint effort by cooperating landowners...honestly, a MARVEL for the MTB community.
Almost COMPLETELY dismissing over 100 miles of trail because you didn't want to do some "uppy downy blue trails" as some misguided effort to "make sure you guys don't waste your time if you go to a trail" is 100% garbage. Completely bypassing the trails based on some quick research isn't "Making sure" - nor is it really that "honest". You didn't ride it! As for the dirtbike mountain bikers - it was some people who weren't very nice to some horse riders, who happened to be landowners. Bad move.
Thirdly, complaining about paying 40 bucks to camp in a tiny town that hardly makes any money is weak, man. We're in the middle of a pandemic and their revenues have likely been slashed to the bone.
[edit]: Finished the full video and glad to see you DID ride a TINY portion of the KT, glad you did. The beginning was just a bit...misleading.

I wouldn’t say you’re a trail snob, you like what you like. It just bums me out to hear you always first blame the trail builders. You most likely have very little knowledge of the relationship between builders and land owners in a area. Builders almost always want to build cool stuff but it isn’t always allowed or can be agreed upon. Enjoying the trail vids though!

Kingdom can be a lot of fun, but it's super hard to do a self guided especially for a first time - the stuff around Burke mountain is more fun as it's rowdy - a climb up Burke and the stuff around Moose Alley is always good. Most of the good darling hill trails are now closed - for me it's just a solid place to bring friends of different abilities enjoy a big day out, nice scenery and have some beers by a river and enjoy a trip back in time with limited cell phone service.

Since you said you didn’t want to go in, I’ll assume not. Not cool. And then you go on about “assholes” who don’t respect what the locals and landowners have built. Got a mirror, Brian?
We are not from Vermont, but love KT. When we go there... when next we can... we buy passes. We don’t piss and moan about camping fees or hotel rates. We respect the landowners’ contributions. Great Choice on Burke Mountain, its right up your alley. J bar and Rude awakening are some of the best in the state.
As for Kitchell, eh MEh. Even with the recent closures of what were the best trails are Darling Hill (Tap'n Die, Tody's, Troll Stroll) Kitchell is still over so quickly. Darling Hill is fairly easy, but there is fun flow to be had there and I think the reason why its so popular is in great New England area, and even locally in Vermont is because prior to machine building trails, Darling hill basically had hand built flow trails with out having to resort to machine work due to its Sand soil. With that said you can a ton of DH in on Darling Hill it just comes are shorter burst.
Moose Haven is great as well, and has long flowly style trails. Not as long as Burke's 2k but pretty long.
If you like Upper Burke Mountain, the next closest thing in the state is probably Perry Hill but its different flavor of GNAR, also Cochrans in Richmond as well.
My offer still stands if you ever come back to Vermont, and want to ride some hand built steep loam trails more akin to the PNW just shorter in length, Id love to show you around.

How was your 14 day mandatory quarantine in Vermont? Guys in bike shop might feel comfortable not wearing a mask because out of state travelers aren't supposed to be there...

$42 for camping? You should look more into dispersed camping! Never pay for it if you don't have to! Then you can use that shower you said you never use lol

Living in MA I can get to KT in a couple hours. Would I fly there to ride? Probably not. New England is pretty boney overall so KT can be a fun diversion where you can really pedal on some flowy trails and put some miles up. I don’t ride Burke when I go though I may try in the future. It does tend to rain a lot and gets greasy as hell as you can see.

Don’t feel bad Brian, I think I crashed in that same spot on lower J Bar......glad you stuck with the mountain. The rest is “good” but the mountain is where the gnar gets mixed in with the good. Be safe.

So what has better trail riding?
Kansas or South Carolina? There’s more in Kansas that I would recommend and I’m sure there’s more in South Carolina that others would recommend.

There is a ton of riding in VT. Explore the VMBA.org website to see the local trail networks across the state. I hope you don't just do the one stop in Burke. There is some good climbing and technical riding in the NW part as well. I am glad to see you enjoy some technical riding. You can always come back in the future to explore.

To be honest the whole beginning part of this video was almost too coincidental, you stayed one campsite over from the one i stayed at when I stayed at Burke Mt's campground, and you also went on Burnham the opposite direction that I came up it,haha. The trails at Burke Mountain are nothing compared to the rest of the KT trail systems. When you venture out farther into the trail systems the climbs are more than worth it for the flowyness and well built rock, wood, and other features on your way down. If you ever re-visit these trails I highly recommend you pop back into the other KT trails and even ask some local to help you out because it is soooooo worth it.

The rain coming a few hours too early is just an average day in Vermont. Some days it's not even in the forecast and you get a torrential downpour out of nowhere. It just materializes in the mountains, all of the evaporating water from our rivers and lakes just accumulating with nowhere to go but down. It's fascinating, and beautiful, but not the best when you want to ride for the five months without mud or snow.

Seems every bike park claims to be the best in the world and camp grounds are charging rates like they are a five star motel.
If you get a eMTB the climbs aren't so bad.
