  • In this video we learn how to use the XTOOL D8 and KC100 to program a 2011 Mini Countryman to accept two $25 key FOBs from eBay. We’ll then see how the key blades were cut at home as well on a small CNC mill. We’ll finish up comparing the cost of buying a FOB from the dealer to the hardware required to do it yourself.
    UPDATE: I contacted XTOOL via email soon after posting this video asking about problems, I was having with the VANOS relearn functionality on this Mini. They responded promptly and asked that I send them the log files from my usage of the D8 yesterday so they could improve this feature. XTOOL was also nice enough to provide an 8% discount code for the D8. See the links below. I do not get any of this 8% but might get a small amount from Amazon if you use the associate links provided. (Full disclosure).
    Please consider clicking on the Subscribe button below and then click the bell icon. That way you will be notified when I post a new video. Thanks!

    This is a great video showing a real life exaple of what it's like. You had the confidence and know-how to do it yourself. Anyone saying that you were screwing up or making mistakes apparently has never worked on a car before because even simple repairs can come with snags. Great video.

      Glad it was helpful. Key programming can be rather hit and miss as the car makers like to make it overly difficult. This is especially true for BMW. I contacted XTOOL by email at: xtoolofficial@hotmail.com and with my VIN they were able to confirm it would work for my vehicle.

      The longest part of the process was finding the information on how to cut the key blank. Cutting the key took only a few minutes. For the programming part, updating the CAS firmware took longer than programming the new FOBs in.

      Some manufactures do not like letting third party scan tools do some functions. Some makes/models require paying the manufacture a fee to access a PIN code to program keys. XTOOL and Autel can often handle contacting the manufacture's computer for you but you still have to pay for it.

      I do not know anything about actual key cutting machines. I used the small CNC mill I happened to have which required more effort to draw a 3D model of the key, calculate the key cut based on keycode and generate the GCODE. AS I understand it a professional key cutting machine just needs to know the key code and type of key and it can figure out the rest automatically.

    Do you need the kc100 to program keys or just the D8 by itself? There is nothing stated that says that you need the add on part to program key fobs

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on what sort of FOB you are working with. When I did my Ford Ranger I did not need the KC-100 to program it to accept new chipped keys. For the Mini, since it uses an RFID type FOB you need the KC-100 to read the code off the FOB so you can program it into the car.
      You can contact XTOOL and ask about your particular vehicle. They are really good about answering questions quickly.

    Is this scanner a stand alone tool ? Does it require an internet connection to program keys?
    Other than the free updates for 2-3 years does it require a subscription to preform the higher functions ? Thank you
    I know after free updates end you have to pay for updates , however if you don’t pay for the updates can you still program keys and write ecu for the models already on the tablet ?

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think requiring an internet connection to program keys depends more on the vehicle than the scanner. For example, on the Mini I was working on here if I did not have at least one key I would have required connecting to some service (guessing through BMW). Same goes for programming VIN codes into modules and such. On some cars you have to use a online service from the manufacturer.
      One HUGE advantage, other than updates, to connecting the scanner to the internet is that XTOOL can download a log from the scanner for a car you had problems with. They did this several times when I was trying to do the Vanos reset/relearn on this Mini. They were able to download the log from my D8 and figure out what the problem was.

    The problem that I’m having, I have the same set up that you’re using. I did not update the vehicle so I am going to try to update the cas. But I don’t have any key fobs. Do you have a video programming BMW or mini with no key fobs?

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Usually an 'All keys lost' programming of new FOBs is different. Some cars require a programmer that can connect for the car manufacture's network to do some sort of validation. I think XTOOLS can do this on their own, i.e. figure out the unlock code on their own but it is a service you have to pay for per vehicle.
      I would send them an email and ask if your set up can do this. It is the Chinese New Year now so you won't get a replay for a week or so.

      You might be able to find a locksmith in the area who can cut the key (what Mini calls the 'blade'.) If you buy the FOB from the dealer you will pay $200. Buy from eBay for $20, and have locksmith cut the key. If you have the D8 and KC100 you can program the Mini to accept the new FOB.

    Will the d8 work for all keys lost scenario

    • @heyyoucanfixit
      @heyyoucanfixit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the vehicle. On the Ford Ranger I did you could do an 'Erase all keys' but needed at least two new keys to program any in. On the Mini, the way I did it required putting one working FOB in the reader so it could compare its ID with what was set in the car. There appears to be a way to do it by connecting to a server somewhere to make sure it is OK, this may be a service though XTOOL.
      If you email XTOOL at xtoolofficial@hotmail.com with your VIN number, they can tell you. Their customer service is excellent.

      I saw something like this recently on a ScannerDanner video. He was using a different brand scanner but it was very slow at graphing the engine RPM when in the manufacturer specific mode. He then tried generic OBD2 and it was very fast.
      Sometimes this is because of the vehicle itself, i.e. the ECU outputs data slowly in mfg specific mode. Sometimes it can be the scanner, i.e. the software on the scanner works slow for some vehicles.
      If you run into this you can email XTOOL at: xtoolofficial@hotmail.com . They can look at the logs from you D8 and see what the problem was. They did this for the VANOS relearn on my Mini. I found the procedure a bit confusing and they were able to improve it and incorporate some better English text.

      I have had the Taig mini CNC mill for about 15 years. It has long since paid for itself and can do many more jobs than cuttings keys. The only cost related to the mill for this job was the chuck of aluminum for the fixture.
      Given the information in the PDF I linked to you can decode your key and have it cut by a locksmith. In the area where I live (small town) the only locksmith can cut about any key but does not do programming.

    Messing making keys can cost you big time is why the waring. I would take it to the dealer. They screw up they have to fix the mess. Also you made a lot of errors you had to clear. One mess up could cost you a expensive part. Newer cars are really not worth the chance. Dealership has the special factory scanner that we can't get. Around about 2017 its has gotton a lot worse. Sad thing is with these scanner you can find out whats wrong but you need to connect to the factory internet and pay them to get software. Also you need some more stuff to connect to the factory. Unless you do this for a living you are screwed. With the xtool it lets you sorta no what wrong so they can't rip you off at the dealership or a good mechanic that knows his stuff. You did a good job but it took a lot of time.

    If you have proximity keyfob, you definitely need to spend another $600 for KC501. Don't buy cheap Chinese keyfob either as many cars have aluminum keys and many Chinese made keys are steel which is difficult to cut and ruins your cutter. Bottom line, unless you are locksmith, just get it done at dealer or find a good locksmith.
    This advice applies even more if you have European made cars.
    D8 by itself is useless for making keys on a newer cars 2019+.

      Every key I have seen, that gets inserted into a lock, has been brass with a nickel plating. I have never seen an aluminum or steel key, neither would make sense unless it was a non-contact sort of lock.

      @heyyoucanfixit Oh, there is really no risk on cars that are meant to have keys programed. This car isn't your downgrading the cas this isn't supposed to happen. This car, like almost every European car, is made to have keys made without the vehicle present because all keys are preprogrammed when the car is made. So you're manipulating the data on the computer and, in this case, downgrading. You will see that eventually, 1 will fail without a power supply, and you will have a mess in your hands. I mean, I do this job, but I use a power supply every time you need a clean voltage of 13.5
