      I believe the fog was at the base of the Plateau to prevent more powerful creatures from getting close. The fog disappeared once Link gets the glider because the "spirits" realize he's ready to restart his journey. As for the monsters that are on the Plateau already, they were there when it was "teleported".

It's actually kind of a shame really - as cool as it is to find the master sword in the lost woods, it would actually be even more amazing if it was found in the destroyed remnants of the temple of time. So they could have kept the original locations, and just moved the shrine of resurrection, Then you could have started in the lost woods too and more of it could have been explorable

    Really really loved this theory when I first saw it a year ago. But after playing the game, I think the simplest answer is the whole map was retconned, possibly to give veteran fans all too familiar with past maps of Hyrule a sense that exploring Hyrule for the first time by switching things up a little. That or it was a compromise between OoT's location for the Temple of Time and Skyward's Sword's Sealed Temple so they retconned Castle Town's location more south to cement the connection between the two iterations. I imagine canonically we're supposed to believe that Castle Town was always south, close to the entrance to Gerudo Desert, and that kinda makes more sense to have a fortified major city of commerce between Hyrule and the people of the desert. And it's still central enough to be easily accessed by other regions of Hyrule.

  • @LyghtWaves
    @LyghtWaves 6 ปีที่แล้ว +571

    The Old Man says the Great Plateau was the birthplace of the kingdom of Hyrule, NOT Hyrule Castle itself. This would imply that this is where the goddess Statue from Skyward Sword descended into the land below allowing it's residence to begin settling the kingdom. This would also explain the Plateau's unnatural shape and placement, as well as it's spiritual significance.

    Personally I think it's the foundation of what was once Skyloft. If it rose once, it can presumably rise again and move. It would explain why it looks so unnatural sticking out the ground like that, since it is basically an island on top of more land.
    After SS, it likely became the place where OOT's Castle and Town was built, since it was the homeland of the original Hylians. At some point, it was risen again for whatever reason and ended up falling to where it was in BOTW. The Lost Woods of BOTW grew in the hole it left behind.
    The Master Sword is put in the forest rather than the Temple of Time, simply because that's where the Sacred Realm entrance still is, and it basically needs to always be put in that spot.

    • @Drewsefer89
      @Drewsefer89 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another interesting theory as well.

    • @oscarskals6558
      @oscarskals6558 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      And if i may furthermore support your theory, at the end of skyward sword the temple with the statue of hylia sinks down to earth, sealing ganon away. It has also been theorised that the forest temple in extension with the temple from skyloft (that sunk), turned out to be the temple of time, which also explain the time gate in skyward sword. So way more connections there. I'd say its the temple from skyward sword, not that it is a land swap.
      Writing this i realised, that a lot of theories say the game takes place in the child timeline (explaining stuff like zoras and ritos at the same time, and the discription of of rock salt in the game AND the upcoming lobstershirt (even tho it probably i just a funny little item)). During the child timeline, hyrule was flooded with water. It might have been a possibility that the water may have pushed the ground down, leaving the great plateau with its "walls". Furthermore that would explain a connection between rito village and their island in windwaer, and the water that is left there now. Oh, and the water surrounding lost woods makes sense as well then.
      Sorry for the long reply, half of it just poured outta my mind as i wrote, but to summarize; i agree with you, skyward sword is probs the best reason for all of this :)

    • @edwardevans5759
      @edwardevans5759 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Actually if you really think about it Breath of the Wild is a convergence of all three timelines and not simply in one of the three timelines. A convergence explains multiple things that are in BotW that should only be in one timeline and not the others.
      1) The Lynels are only found in the Fallen Hero timeline because they did not join Ganon until he had defeated the Hero so that points to BotW being in that timeline.
      2) During the ritual memory Zelda says "Whether skyward bound, adrift in time, or steeped in the glowing embers of twilight." This points to child era timeline because of the express mention of Twilight which is only found there.
      3) The Koroks are the nearly exact same design as the ones from Windwaker which takes place in the Adult era timeline.
      These three points along with a variety of other things found throughout the game (the ruins of Lon-Lon Ranch, the fact that the Zora and Rito both exist in BotW when the Rito are supposedly and evolved form of the Zora, and many other things too numerous to list in one post) point solidly to a convergence of all three timelines, possibly due to the sheer power of Calamity Ganon breaking free from his prison. I think when he broke free he merged the timelines inadvertently or perhaps they merged as the universe's own defense mechanism to combat such a supreme evil.

      @fist-of-doom487 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Their is something that has concerned me that I don’t think people considered and that is Calamity Gannon’s existence. Two very important details in this by the way. Calamity Ganon has emerged twice. 10,000 years prior to Breat of the Wilds and in the present time of Breath of the Wilds. The second important piece of information is that Calamity Ganon exists because Ganon broke Demises curse and gave up on resurrection, reverting into a more demonic form rather than being a gerudo like before. The issue arises that because of this this is the end of this timeline. Zelda and Link won’t resurrect anymore and Ganon won’t return except this isn’t entirely true for Ganon because Calamity wasn’t killed. He was banished by the power of Hylia the Goddess of Time. Calamity wasn’t killed he was thrown through time itself. Who knows where or when he was thrown to. For all we know this created a new timeline. For all we know Calamity Ganon went back in time and destroyed some version of Hyrule. This could be a paradox situation in that the banishment created the scenario that made Breath of the Wild. The first rise of Calamity could have been where he was sent.

  • @TomskyB

    I've always found the map of BOTW to be much closer to the Link to the Past Map. They've both got Hyrule Castle smack in the middle, Lake Hylia in the South-East, Death Mountain in the North-east and the Lost Woods in the north. Also, I have to disagree with the idea that they've swapped. There is a road leading out of the Great Plateau, approaching Lon Lon Ranch, rather similar to the road in Ocarina of Time. I simply believe that the Great Plateau was just risen up. Interesting theory, though.

  • @brinnyn6881

    My main thought for if they swapped is from a purely game-play standpoint. If the great plateau had been north of the castle when you start the game, you're going to get A) fucked over by guardians and pools of malice B) Have an inferno hellscape to one side and C) have a freezing wasteland to the other. It makes no sense for it to have been the starting place of the game.

    • @flaksjhfdi
      @flaksjhfdi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    • @juice2307
      @juice2307 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Personally, I'd say the real reason would be to keep the Master Sword in the care of the Deku Tree, especially since Calamity Ganon LITERALLY has eyes everywhere each time he awakens.
      What if, after the first attack from Ganon after he becomes a spiritual cloud of malice, someone made a wish on the Triforce to change up the landscape of Hyrule? This would confuse Ganon after waking up millennia later, and also ensure that the Master Sword itself stay safe. We know evil can't wield it, but no one ever said it couldn't damage or even destroy it.
      Taking this further, let's say Calamity Ganon is actually Ganondorf I. This means that as far as he's aware, the Master Sword is always located in the Temple of Time. This means he'd be able to have 100 Lynels guarding the location of the one sword that repels him if he wanted. He already sent his goons there. Goodbye heroes of legend.

    • @arielgato8289
      @arielgato8289 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tarvaax ... hmmm good point, maybe ur right, but i desagree with the wish on the triforce to move the plateau, if using the triforce there should be other wishes more useful. I think the shikah tec did it.

    • @NintendoBlackCrisis
      @NintendoBlackCrisis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Tarvaax Something I thought that was rather interesting was the amount of decayed guardians around the temple of time. Perhaps Ganon was trying to find the master sword to destroy it. However since the blade repels evil, I always thought that something like that wouldn't be possible.

    • @nworder4life
      @nworder4life 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could be that Hylia's statue repelled the guardians. Aside from the statue from SS, it's the largest and the temple of time has always been her domain. Also we know that Hylia has real power to throw around like how she cursed the evil statue.

    • @mileselectric3677

      maybe it was moved so that link could rest unharmed and all the enemies were placed there to search for link and end him only problem being that they couldnt find him. Also that forest is known to be cursed right? so wouldnt that be the best place to put it no enemies can get in they get sent right back out and people go in only to find themselves at the entrance.
      My only big question is why the Master Sword had to Re-Pick Link he was already decided by the sword to be the hero so why would he have to be picked again.
      has the sword been known to cause the hero great amounts of strain, and if not then why now?

    Or, more likely, the developers felt that having Link awaken in the Lost Woods next to the Great Deku Tree, with The Lost Woods being where the Great Plateau is currently located, would diminish the feel of making the player feel like they really are all on their lonesome, diminish the idea of using flashbacks to tell the story (which almost seems like an idea brought-up near the end of development and that a lot of the original planned story, additional bosses, and likely dungeons (the Yiga Clan Hideout was a mini-dungeon, and no-one can say that The Forgotten Temple doesn't reek of classic Zelda Dungeon spelunking) were cut due to development taking too long - I expect the announced "Breath of the Wild 2" sequel to dive back into that cut content), and it would be TOO "Ocarina of Time".
    I have no doubt that Nintendo wanted Link to awaken and let the player first see Hyrule right where they did on the map: Looking north overlooking Hyrule Field, the destroyed Hyrule Castle just beyond, and Death Mountain in the distant background - much like in the artwork found in the original Zelda manual. Swapping locations of The Lost Woods and The Great Plateau (which would likely have been called "Old Hyrule" or something originally and not on any plateau) was done to immediately show the player that Hyrule was destroyed, you're all alone, monsters are everywhere, and you're screwed.
    If Link had awakened in The Lost Woods (where The Great Plateau is now), then the game would've started with the Great Deku Tree giving Link his first mission of completing the first four shrines in order to prove himself once more in order to allow Link to leave (since this Great Deku Tree didn't seem to like Link all that much it makes sense in-game-lore-wise). Then, when Link explores Hyrule, he stumbles upon the Old Man in Old Hyrule (Great Plateau, located where The Lost Woods wound-up), who could give Link a new mission to activate the four shrines of Old Hyrule. This would then unlock a hidden section within the ruins of The Temple of Time where the Master Sword was stashed by Zelda. This would be a nudge-nudge-wink-wink to the mysterious old men in the original Zelda title who gave that Link his various swords while also acknowledging the Master Swords' location in Ocarina of Time.
    But, again, the idea of having Link start in The Lost Woods was likely seen as far too Ocarina of Time, so the devs swapped the locations and removed a few references to older games in the process.

    I know this is old, but my theory; I think they originally intended for the Great Plateau to be where the Korok for is now located, but moved it to the central location for gameplay purposes. It makes sense because of the gameplay structure. Once you get the glider, the game completely frees you and lets you do as you please. It may suggest what to do next as per the story, but it never FORCES you at all. Putting the tutorial area in the center instead of at the top of the map makes it more accessible and allows the player to, quite literally, pick a direction and go on their adventure. It's pretty genious. The tutorial arms you with knowledge and basic gear, then lets you decide where you want to go first.

      A few things come to mind:
      Hylia had been almost completely forgotten since the establishment of Hyrule and yet there's a giant statue of her in the Temple of Time.
      It's quite possible that Hylia was reincarnated some time after Twilight Princess and before Breath of the Wild. The rediscovery of the Forgotten Temple as well as the Spring of Power, Wisdom and Courage might be related.
      My guess is that the Great Plateau was elevated from the ground (and possibly fortified) more than 10,000 years ago to protect both the Shrine of Resurrection and the Great Plateau Resurrection Tower, which activates the other Sheikah tech, possibly with the help of Hylia.
      It certainly is no coincidence that devout Sheikah monks with power bestowed by Hylia have been waiting for the hero within the shrines.
      But considering that the Sheikah tech on the Great Plateau was created only 10,000+ years ago, this doesn't explain why it was moved in the first place, since the old Castle Town had already been replaced with the new one by the time of TP.
      The destruction of OoT's Castle Town and relocation of the Great Plateau and Master Sword are probably entirely unrelated to the events 10,000 years ago.
      The Sheikah just reused and refortified old structures.

      fonhaljos interesting proposal! I would say that, as far as TP is concerned, the ruins of the Temple of Time seem to be *solely* that: ruins of the ancient Temple and some outbuildings. @@claudia-7917 Another theory that I think fits a bit better is that the Great Plateau *is* Hyrule in its entirety... at least from the Ocarina time period. Rotate the Great Plateau ~180 degrees and everything lines up very well with the Ocarina of time map. The Temple of Time, Castle Town, and ruins of Lon Lon Ranch now line up where they should, Mount Hylia would be a now dormant Death Mountain. The River of the Dead would've been Zoras domain, Forest of Spirits lines up with the Kokiri forest, Lake Hylia appears to have dried up a bit leaving a few small ponds and I don't know what the Eastern Abbey would be, but it lines up well with the Gerudo Valley/Desert. Maybe the old Gerudo town? Perhaps the Great Plateau was old Hyrule and the kingdom expanded outward quite significantly over the centuries.

      @@Tiana_atr Maybe it's both. Maybe the Great Plateau is the original Hyrule map from Ocarina of Time, swapped with what is the Lost Woods and Kokiri Forest in BotW. The rest of the map of Breath of the Wild is then like extensions of the original OoT map. Then, we have everything relating to Death Mountain in the northeast; everything relating to the Gerudo region in the west/southwest; everything relating to the Zoras and Zora's Domain the east/southeast; everything relating to the Lost Woods and Kokiri Forest in the southeast/south-southeast; everything relating to Lake Hylia in the south/south-southwest; and Kakariko Village being located somewhere south of Zora's Domain.

    Coming back to this theory after the new trailer reveal for the sequel gives this theory a bit more probability since it was shown that Hyrule castle was levitated into the sky. • @TheDeadmanstrolling

    I always just assumed it was like this:
    1. Great Plateau is the birthplace of the kingdom. OoT Castle, Castle Town, and Temple of Time are here.
    2. Some cataclysm occured. The first Calamity? The Great Flood? Tectonic shifting? It's been 10,000 years since the Divine Beasts were made, and the Divine Beasts are so far away from the tech available in any prior game, so millions of years may have passed!
    3. The cataclysm subsides. Hyrule resettles far north, away from the old capital, which was now shifted to face southwest.

  • @HereIsStefan
    @HereIsStefan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Great theory. I always figured the two were interconnected in some way, mainly because of the fountain and the notable buildings surrounding the Temple of Time. (Plus the master sword, of course).
    There's also a possibility that the Lost Woods wasn't the original resting place of the Master Sword. Sure Zelda left it there for Link after his defeat prior to his resurrection, but we have no idea how he obtained it prior to those events. There's a huge chance they hid the Master Sword and left it with the Deku Tree for protection while Link was resting. To leave it in the Temple of Time out in the open like that would be a huge mistake.
    I never would have figured the land masses would be swapped, though. And yes, Lost Woods isn't as close to Lake Hylia as it used to be in OoT, but remember that this is 10,000 years into the future from OoT, maybe even more than that. Continental drift would have moved any land masses further away from Lake Hylia, so of course some of the geography is going to change.

    I definitely believe they were swapped. But Nintendo could have given us more clues as to why - Champion's Ballad? I have a small theory of my own. Maybe it was very recently that they were swapped. Maybe they were in their original locations when Link died, and that's how the Sheika were able to bring Link to the Shrine of Ressurection - it wasn't elevated or moved yet. Then, the Goddess swapped the two landmasses during Link's sleep? They put him up there to protect him - so nobody could get to him. Nobody is alive to remember the swap. And the snowcapped peaks are still there, despite being surrounded by a desert, because they weren't able to melt in a short amount of time.
    And to keep the Master Sword safe, of course. I liked the video! I'll join the Discord, because I have a question that hasn't been answered by anybody.

    One of the theories that actually convinced me; I've always been confused about the Great Plateau and the Lost Wood's strange locations they are in, and judging by the big stone-walls that look like old old sheikah tech, the Great Plateau could have easily been moved slowly over time and could be just a dormant divine beast. It (The Great Plateau) could have also been for Link, judging by the fact that he wakes up there. They wouldn't just give Link a small motorcycle, a replacement for a horse, instead of a divine beast like the other champions.
    And for the Korok forest, that still confuses me on how it could have moved, but the Korok fog could have moved it because it is capable of teleporting Link and other creatures away.

      @Edgeperor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She put it there because that’s where the pedestal was. Didn’t you see the state it was in when she put it in? If she put it it the Shrine of Resurrection so that Link could immediately get it, then it would probably deal very little damage and shatter as soon as you hit something with it. It’s not like they could just get a new one like you can with the rest of the Champions’ weapons. The pedestal there was the only way to heal the Master Sword. Have you even seen all the memories yet?

    The Master Sword has appeared in the Lost Woods in previous games. Why assume that this time in particular, it's because a goddess feng-shui'd the geography?
    When they say that the Plateau is the origin of Hyrule, I figured that means it's where the three goddesses descended. The legend says that after they departed, they left the Triforce, which would be resting in the Temple of Time, which is on the Plateau.
    Castle Town was never on the Plateau, it's near the castle; you can see the ruins of it in BotW, still south of Hyrule Castle just like it's always been.

      infact.. it could not always been IN the temple of time as the temple of time did not always exist.... the temple of time was created to act as a seal on the entrance to the Sacred Realm.. which means there was a time where it did not exist(aka ALLTP)

    All sorts of stuff wrong with this theory, though it is an interesting take on things I guess. The map for BOTW is essentially a rehash of Link to the Past from the SNES's map. Desert in the SW, Lakes/ocean in the SE. Death Mountain in the North. Hyrule Castle somewhat centralized, and The Lost Woods to the west of Death Mountain. Zora's Domain in the east and south of Death Mountain. Of course, the maps don't line up perfectly, but no Zelda map lines up perfectly with older ones.

With hypothesis videos like these, it's best to end more on a note of "this is my conclusion and this is how I got it. This is a really great theory, but I feel that it was done more so for gameplay reasons. If the great plateau had been in the area of Castle Town, the player would have subconsciously chosen the closest dungeons first as opposed to doing the dungeons in any order. Not to mention, there would essentially be only one direction for the player to leave. Of course there’s the area above the lost woods on the map, but that’s really small in comparison to the whole map.

    Now wait just a minute, the beginning of Kingdom Hearts 2 is really important to the whole plot of the series. I agree that it's a little drawn out, but it isn't that bad. Most people just want to rush through it and play as Sora, that's why they can't stand Roxas.
    People tend to ignore Roxas's character because of this when they first play it. Now that I truly understand the story line of the series, I have a much deeper respect for Kh2's opening. It's even become one of my favorite parts of the game.

    • @NintendoBlackCrisis
      @NintendoBlackCrisis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean, yeah I'm sure it was very important to the story but it could have probably been done a lot better. However the start was definitely tough to play through.

      @Yoyo-r8o 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NintendoBlackCrisis I get that for people who have no idea what's going, especially when you skip the first game. *cough* Nah I'm just pulling your leg.
      *Spoiler*
      However, the 7 days you play in the beginning as Roxas is a continuation of the game 358/2 days where he is the main character. The way they set it up is that Roxas lived exactly 1 year. That's why it has such a heavy weight to the fans of the series, and it's why it became a lot of people's favorite part of the game. Roxas disappeared on his first birthday right after he finally got his memories back and had to fight his best friend.
      *End Spoiler*
      If you haven't finished the series, I seriously recommend jumping back in and playing the games how they are meant to be played. The plot is complex, but the characters are remarkable and the story does make sense later on. There is nothing I love more than Kingdom Hearts, and kh2 in particular is my favorite. I have over 2k hours on that game. 😂

In bow looking out you face north, however oot you would be facing west. Same with the deku tree as well, so I believe when the regions swapped they both might have also been rotated. Your explanation for why doesn't seem to add up. Unless you're trying to suggest the sword and pedestal themselves didn't move somehow while everything else in the region did move, the Master Sword would have been in the Lost Woods either way. Moving the Lost Woods wouldn't have had any effect on protecting the Master Sword, as the general location of the Lost Woods is known anyway and there's no added defenses around the Lost Woods. So moving the Lost Woods to hide the Master Sword would be pointless unless the sword and pedestal remained in the exact same location, while the Plateau and Woods swapped around it. But while the Master Sword is in the Temple of Time in Ocarina of Time, it is found in the Lost Woods in LTTP and LBW. There's also the fact that if it was the Goddess (which Goddess by the way? Hylia became Zelda and lost most of her powers as a result, and the 3 Great Goddesses left after making the Triforce) that moved the regions around, then the problem of the Master Sword being in the pedestal wouldn't be a problem, as obviously the Goddess would have sufficient health (though I believe it was stated that the health drain was added after Zelda returned it, so it would wait for Link's return), and would likely be deemed worthy enough
    Any chance you could better explain or find a different answer?

    • @NintendoBlackCrisis
      @NintendoBlackCrisis  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was indeed suggesting that the sword and the pedestal didn't move (it was in the video). Also, while Hylia became Zelda, I still proved that it is possible for the land to move (heck, it could be another goddess for all we know).

    • @Kahadi
      @Kahadi 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NintendoBlackCrisis can you prove or support that aspect of the theory? Like looking more around the sword and pedestal themselves instead of the regions as a whole? Where would they have been on the plateau? What indications are there of such a thing? It isn't enough for a vague fitting of the regions as a whole. It's one thing to show that the Great Plateau mostly fits where the Lost Woods are, but if there's no indication that the Master Sword was on the Plateau, the theory doesn't hold. And the point of the Master Sword being in the Temple of Time in OoT doesn't work alone, since there's more than enough time between the games that the sword itself could have been moved by a previous hero, and the sword is found in the Lost Woods in LTTP, LBW, and TP. In fact, I believe in TP the Temple of Time itself is in the Lost Woods
      Now, I think I should clarify that I'm neither for nor against this theory. You haven't convinced me it's true, but at the same time there isn't any evidence outright disproving it. But whether I believe a theory or not, I always enjoy seeing how well someone can defend their theory, how much evidence they can find to support it, especially if such evidence is in small details or hard to notice places. I'm fairly new to your channel, but am enjoying your videos, so I want to see your worth as a theorist, and if you can fill in holes in such a theory, it would be great. Because as I said, there's nothing that outright disproves this theory. But without evidence on a smaller scale, more focused on the position of the Master Sword than the sizing of the regions, it doesn't hold enough ground
