My mom got me fired from 2 jobs in 6 months at age 15 from “having a talk” with my bosses. She demanded they write my schedule to her specifications and would call and yell at them when they didn’t do it. She acted like I was her personal slave and had me cook, clean, raise my siblings and also told my job I needed to be home to help her out when she wasn’t feeling well (when she was plastered drunk, which was daily)

I found my sister's boyfriend a better paying job than I was making myself. He had nothing and was unable to pay their bills.
He refused and said he would rather move back to Michigan and work with his uncle making $200 a month and have his family support him.
I ended up taking the job offer.

40k is enough to live on your own, independent. The only thing you just can’t have as much in luxury as you could with more money. I make 40k, and I could live alone if I wanted to right now, but I would left with approx $500 in spending cash if I got lucky with cheaper housing. That’s barely enough to pay for car insurance, or a car note for that matter, your phone bill and food/gas. You’d be scraping by but it’s not poverty, by any means. If you can live independently and don’t have to rely on outside help, you aren’t impoverished

Good cover art is one of the best investments an author can make. I would gladly pay double the usual rate for awesome cover art.
As a writer as well, and one who can't draw to save their life, I completely agree. It felt like they were dragging writers' names into the dirt.

Well, it surely depends on your country or even city. My country is a fairly well-off country, where people earn a decent amount of money. BUT the eastern states earn far less than the western states (like 20-30 or even more % less). Of course there is a difference in housing prices, but still.
And then we have some cities, where even a standard 2 room appartment (not even in the city center) alone will cost you the equivalent of 12$/h on a 40h work week. And that doesn't include side housing costs (water, heat, electricity etc.) AND the 12$ is of course the full salary, not the one you actually get after taxes. If we're talking after taxes, then you would need to earn 17,5$/h alone to pay rent without the side costs, food etc. And because taxes are such a great thing, you would need to live like a broke student, even if you earned 30$/h (before taxes and all expenses).
I personally live in a slightly higher-priced area, but it's still ok. A bit above average, but not extremely much. I earn about 38$/h (exchance rate considered - only 7h/day - BEFORE taxes, after taxes, i'm at 20$/h) and actually am in the top 20% of my country (according to some statistics i read, so it might not be 100% accurate).
But yeah, her job offer seemed ridiculously good, especially for an UNQUALIFIED person.

I am from Australia. Their minimum wage in south Australia starts at $20/$23 an hour. That is just to start! Some people are getting paid $60/$100 an hour if you work in the trades. (Mining, construction etc).

It's likely Australian dollars. $24 an hour is very close to minimum wage in Australia (for people 21 or older) and typical for unqualified work. That's about $16 -17 USD.

I do not even get that much as a trained industrial mechanic
I made that much as a nanny for my last job with a rich family (I had made $15-20 before, but this was the only time I made more). The kids went to school or daycare until 4 and there were cleaning people to do housework, so all I had to do was laundry (and putting clothes away), shopping for the kid’s clothes, making dinner for the kids and making sure they do homework and bathed before bedtime. I had my own apartment over the garage and use of any of the cars ( except dad’s corvette, but car seats don’t fit well in it anyway lol). I worked for them through 5 kids (there were two when I started).
I remember a job I had when I was a teenager that paid around the same, granted I only went in twice a month but it was nice. I got let go because my family had loaded so many chores on me that day that I was too tired to work. My sister kept that job until the place burned down and the owner left town.
I'm a lifeguard I don't get paid shit.

Alright then. Name the artist who made the cover of the first Harry Potter book without looking it up. I know I can't. These CBs really have no idea how "exposure" actually works, even when commissions are from famous, successful people.
To be fair, you may not know their name but if you're in the market looking for someone to professionally design cover art for a book, and you like the HP style, you'll Google "Harry Potter cover art artist" and find it that way. Saying that, you still need to be a multi-million selling author or otherwise insanely famous for "exposure" to fans to actually mean anything.

my husband is an author and one of his fans created a cover for his new book (my husband had given a description of the storyline to some of his online fans) and said "keep writing and I'll take being able to read them as payment" then my husband called his publisher and the fan got $100 cash (it came out of my husband's next check so he was actually the one paying the artist). even if you don't ask for the art, not paying is not acceptable if you use it.

Although just my rent is $800/month... you'd have to work 200 hours to pay for it, and the worst part is, my rent is pretty low for where I live, the lowest being around $500/month and the norm being $1000/month...

I can never be satsified with what I write myself. Dispite not seeing it the moment I finish them, I always find places for improvement after a while.

I do write some Fanfictions myself, but they are not art xD If she writes a Lord of the Rings level fantasy story, THAT'S art. To proclaim silly fanfictions are art is... just strange to me. I see them as a way to train writing, since everything is already set, you just need to look it up, you learn how world building works, how character development influences a story and so on. But you should eventually move on to complete workings of your own. They are not art, they are training wheels.

Just like a super well-drawn picture of a fictional character can be art, so could a super well-written story. I have read fics that have been extremely impactful and better than actual books I have read. But getting all pretentious about writing fanfiction is really ridiculous. No matter if you write a masterpiece of a fanfic, you are still writing fanfic, not original works. And for every masterpiece of a fanfic, there are dozens of bad ones. Saying this as someone who has written both fanfiction and original stories, and is definitely not an entitled prick about it.
There are so many good fic writers out there that should be published authors & it’s legit an honor to have access to their writing for free

My ex mother-in-law was like this. My ex-husband worked for McDonald’s and was suspended because his drawer was $9 and some odd change short. (I know for a fact that he didn’t do this bc he would have just stolen a whole $10 bill) She went down to his work when he came home early and told us, and she yelled at his manager telling her that he wasn’t a thief (he stole her pills all the time) and that if he needed $10 so badly he wouldn’t have to steal it bc she would have given it to him.
This was also the same woman that when he beat me black and blue after drugging me, told me she would have me put in jail if I filed a police report, because I’d put a light scratch on his neck in the scuffle.

My friends dad called his boss"Little Hitler"after my friend didn't get his monthly pay, it was entertaining to hear the story and he still tells it years after, he was 22.
I worked at an Italian restaurant as a teen, and halfway into it, a guy I knew from elementary school got hired as a busser. He apparently complained to his mom about not getting hours. She came in and asked to talk to Steven (our manager) and chewed him out on behalf of her son. Everyone thought it was hilarious and humilating for him. Needless to say she was not successful and her son learned his lesson about bringing mommy to work.

I grew up super dependent on my mom. She had me convinced I couldn’t do anything for myself. She even tried to convince me to try to file for disability, because I was to “unstable” for work. Well, eventually I realized I was capable of anything I wanted to do. I’ve had multiple employers tell me she called to check in on me. She even got caught pretending to be me. She also called my therapist and demanded he tell her everything I said about her. She still runs my siblings lives. One of whom is nearly 40.
LOL. I have a newish Subaru Sti, that was tuned to about 370hp. I park in a condo underground lot. One day I enter the lot, and I see a 16-17 year old boy looking inside the window. Then I see he is with his grandpa.....who lives across the hall from me. They were just admiring it. Then they asked if the grandson could take it out for a spin. They were both confused I wouldn't allow a 16 year old to test out my new sports car. The old man ignores me when he sees me now.
