Push strokes are harder on joints when they bind, pull stroke lift when they bind less resistance easier on joints.
At 71, I've cut a lot of wood in my life; 4 to 6 cords per winter for the forced hot air wood furnace & my 500 lb wood stove in the den. I didn't discover silky Saws until a few years ago, but they outperform any other folding saw that I've ever used or owned. Definitely worth the investment.

I’m a pretty big fan of the silkys I carried the gomboy in my pack when I was a wild land firefighter and now days I have a katanaboy 500 around my property and it makes it’s way into every camping trip they’re definitely performers

The Outback series is actually made out of spring steel in response to all the bushcrafters breaking their saws. That’s the main difference. The tooth set up is also specifically made for dead wood. They are bushcraft saws as opposed to arborists saws. I have the big boy and the pocket boy. Love them.

My Silky Bigboy is now the only saw I bring on hikes or canoe trips. You can't beat it for clearing blowdowns on trails or felling dead standing trees. One advantage of Silky saws over buck saws that you didn't mention is that the geometry of the buck saw limits the diameter of log that can be cut, whereas the Silky is only limited by the length of the blade.
Cutting from below is something a buck saw doesn't do well, while the Silky is really good at it.
The only thing I've found that a buck saw does better is cutting logs into fireplace size lengths. However, the Silky is good enough at it that I can't justify taking a buck saw along on my trips.

Hey if you could only get one one saw which would it be the big boy or the gomboy? Weight effectiveness and pack ability? I didn’t want to get the gomboy and risk not having enough blade length for larger tasks but I also didn’t want something combersome or weighty in my pack the bigboy seems pretty compact for it’s size. Thoughts? I will be traveling with it in a hiking pack.
I would guess that indexing it up would also help for cutting a branch close to the ground so you're not scraping your knuckles on the ground

Grab the Outback Pocketboy if you get a chance, I was skeptical when I picked one up but found myself packing it far more than my Gomboy or Bigboy all summer and fall….
But there is something to be said for being able to easily cut 12” diameter logs for a long fire in the winter with the bigger saws like the Katanaboy 😁

Totally replaced my buck saw. I love my silky saws. I have 3 now, a gomboy a big boy and a katana boy.
My big boy has a bright yellow handle which is a little obnoxious but I will always be able to see where I put it down. I've never felt the rubberized material was slippery at all but I'm interested to see how this new version feels.
I like that this version has a slightly more robust blade. If I ever break mine I'll likely replace it with an outback blade (I assume they are interchangeable with the original big boy blades)
That Katana boy really looks like a beast, I'll bet you can cut a ton of wood with that one!
The blades are interchangeable and I believe that the differences are only minor. I would wait until you change the blade to upgrade. Thanks for watching buddy! 👍
@@Woodswalker1965 the katana definitely is a beast. I've cut logs as big as 3ft diameter. I carry that in the truck instead of a chainsaw to clear roads of winter blow down. Not as fast as a chainsaw but no oil or gas and it starts every time.
My only complaint is that the teeth grab too much and with smaller logs you need to hold them down or the saw pulls it around.
The big boy is my most often used one.

I have all three sizes... and I haven't yet noticed a difference between these and my "rubber-handled" set; but that may be for my lack of "getting out there" for a comparison. I'm just a happy Woodsman. If it works, I'm happy...... I don't worry about detailed comparisons, unless there are significant differences. All Silky's are superior hand saws in my opinion. I bought these primarily for the more durable handle material; which time will tell whether it was a good choice or not. As for replacing a "buck" or "bow" saw........ that would be a fool's choice. My advice would be to never consider such a thing. Know your Tools ~ And never Compromise! Add or Subtract ~ But never Decrease Capability! Be Safe Out There!!!

I'm a noob. Can you tell me why not having a buck saw would be a fool's choice? What can a buck saw do that a folding saw cannot?
I love all of the Silky saws that I've used. I just tend to make sure I can prop the logs up and off the ground. Just seems a lot easier in my usage.

The Bahco is a good little saw, I enjoy mine for small tasks but a longer blade will cut faster of course. Take care and all the best to your family!, 👊

I got this saw the same day I got a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, and I have to say that they make an extremely capable, compact and lightweight set of wood cutting tools, which are well matched in size for carrying.
I think the Silky 240mm Gomboy Curve Outback Saw will make a good combination with my Gransfors Bruks Mini Hatchet, Mora Companion Heavy Duty Stainless knife and a Victorinox Huntsman SAK in a small, light emergency kit.

I bought this same saw for a trip this summer, man is it good. I debated between this and the gomboy but glad I went full size, it’s perfect. The buck saw has been replaced.
I have the Gomboy 240 and the BigBoy. The BigBoy gets more use for me. Good choice👍💪

Nice looking saw Wade, I prefer my buck saws for cutting large amounts of wood. I have been using a Fiskars folder which also has 2 positions and it works well when I need it. I do like the size of the Bigboy though and I might look into upgrading. Cheers buddy!

Excellent review as always, Wade. I’m wondering if you’ve had a chance to saw hardwoods like oak with the Silky and if your comments reflect those experiences.
Also, at what diameter of tree, if any, do you feel a bowsaw starts to be a better tool than the Silky.
My saw of choice is the Bahco 36” bow saw, just so you know where I’m coming from. It’s definitely easier to store a carry a folding Silky.
Thanks Andrew. Ive cut a lot of hardwood including red oak, maple and cherry it works just fine. I think a 36 inch bucksaws is probably a better tool for bucking large logs and lots of it. I think the Silky has advantages in certain situations as I demonstrated, it's able to go places a bucksaws can't.

I'm a big fan and user of Silky, in the woods and in timber framing. Its my understanding the teeth are not set, just filed to the three bevels to form the tooth tip, no set needed as the body of the body is tapered or thinned toward the spine of the body, the thickest part of the body of the blade is at the teeth. I also wouldn't give up my buck saw for chunking up fire wood, I like to run the wood up and down the blade of the bucksaw which is held by my feet and legs, this method beats a silky in cross cutting easily. Its hard to compare the two saws as they perform different task but the same task. Silky saw don't rip very well, nor the buck saw.
Good point about the teeth. What I meant was the Outbacks teeth are designed for bone. Fine enough to cut bone but coarse enough to cut wood. I'll certainly still use bucksaws, both have their advantages. Thanks for your well informed insights my friend👊👍

Great review. I have a similar saw but not the Silky, but I am a fan. I didn’t know about this new model but on specifications alone I like it even more. I have the original Big Boy 2000 and find it indispensable while out on the logging trails with my Jeep. It helps me get to the places I want to get to for hiking and exploring. Have you been able to compare the Outback version to the original? Is there a compelling reason to upgrade or should I just stick with what I’ve got and wait until I need a new saw?
I don't believe there is a huge difference actually. If you ever replace your present blade you could upgrade to the Outback blade and use the original handle. Thanks for watching👍

Got a buddy who swears by them. I have kicked around getting one but, being a backpacker, I hesitate to get one too big so I have never settle on which one.

How are you finding the hestra glove? I like them but the stiching on the outside broke on me after 1 week
I’m 100% happy with mine. I’m probably 3 years into this pair and they are great! Too bad about the stitching on yours, maybe Hestra will repair them?

The stiching on the outside makes them comfortable but exposed. I think mine came off grabbing a a really hot pan. Amazing that yours lasted 3 years! I must be unlucky then

I lost my silky ultra accel 320mm it was discontinued in that size so this will be my next one although I don't know what animal you would need a saw to process I guess if I wanted to make something out of bone or wanted to take the horns and leave the head

I just got mine in the mail today via UPS. I'm impressed with the build quality. I do recommend treating the handle with wood oil to help prevent it drying out and chipping, but this edition is ideal for outdoorspeople as the regular Big Boy 2000s aren't necessarily built for the heavy duty use bush-crafters put such tools through.

They cut wood well in my experience they are fragile. I broke two blades from two different silky saws in the past. Iprefer the bucksaw or the laplander… those are bombproof

I saw it go over but I couldn't get the camera on it in time. It was a big birch that was dead and rotten. The wind knocked it over. Always look for widow makers! 💪

I hear so many good things about silky saws, but I just don't trust myself, because I tend to push cut. Plus for the wood I process I never really need anything other than the Bahco or collapsible bow saw I use. Thanks again Wade and take care mate 👍 🙂

What are the benefits of a buck saw that the Silky saw lacks?
A bucksaw blade will be stronger by design. They both cut well. You won’t be wrong in choosing either one and I enjoy using both. Thanks for watching👍
