@@BackpackingWithJason Hey Jason, can you help me decide on the Big Boy or Gomboy? I live up North. When I go in the woods, usually in a canoe, I need to process firewood at camp to stay warm most of the day and night. I was thinking the Big boy might be better for two reason; burn less calories and be able to process a greater volume of firewood. The Gomboy would be so much more compact..... Thanks Jason, I appreciate your opinion.
They are great saws, I have the same one and love it. Cuts great, sets up super fast, and doesn't pinch the blade as much as my Agawa bucksaw. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome Thank you very much brother. I have been really enjoying your amazing TH-cam videos and channel since I first discovered you in your video a few years back when you created a DIY hot tent & teepee tarp tent. I have always loved your cool presentations !!! Keep on having amazing times in the woods brother!!
Enjoyed this video muchly! I have carried the Silky Pocket Boy for years in my trail maintenance pack. Perfect for quick, small jobs. I also enjoy push / pull blade design of the Laplander which I typically always have with me. But I’ve have been debating whether to get the Big Boy as well because its range of use is clearly greater than Laplander. And now I’m sold! So thank you for posting this.👍
I started my saw journey with a 3 foot, 2 man crosscut saw and soon graduated to a 21” Bob Dustrude quick bucksaw and then moved up to the 24”. Then, not long ago, Agawa popped up on the radar. I have all 3 sizes of that saw. I love my buck saws and I even made 2 similar to yours. I do have a couple of Chinesium folding saws (yours doesn’t fly as well as mine lol) because they do fill a void and also I’m not a totally closed minded A-hole lol. The main reason I’ll most likely never go team silky is purely because the replacement blades are proprietary and are ridiculously expensive compared to the replacement cost of the entire saw ($47 for a GomBoy 240 blade and not too much more for the whole saw). I can walk into any hardware store and get a replacement blade for any of my folding bucksaws for the price of a pizza 😂
I do love my bucksaws. Perhaps I was being a bit dramatic saying I was ditching them. But at this point I much prefer the Silky. Those Agawa saws are nice. I do like those. After I break a few blades I may change my mind about my Silky preference. I like changing my mind. No sense in having one if you can't change it
I just bought that same saw two days ago (my pocketboy curve isn't heavy enough)! I haven't field tested it yet, but I trust all of your reviews, and I know that I'm going to love it! Thanks 👊
You are going to love it! When you get both hands on the handle and start sawing, it just rips! It's awesome. Let me know what you think of it after you have used it a little bit.
My mates told me silky’s are garbage.. “blades are weak and snap”.. They got quiet watching mine cut our firewood the whole trip 😂. Silky’s have hard blades but if you treat them right they’ll last, and replacement blades are only like $30.
Hey Brother. Thanks for the video. However, you can have my Agawa 21" when you pry it from my cold dead hands. Stay safe and look forward to some 🛶 videos soon. Best to you and the fam. Joe
I gotand use a few models of both for a decade or so. Always been envious of your homemade one i rememebr the video well. I still think both kinds have their spot in my pack depends on the trip,
I have to agree, depending on the location and mission at hand, the buck saw is still great. I am sure I won't be completely ditching it.....I may have been being a bit dramatic lol
@ItsGoodintheWoods Rodger dodger to the mission-tailored equipment, and experience with said equipment. its what separates the pros from the Joe's. We make it look easy.
Couldn’t agree more. I have used the cheap foldable saws, Agawa Canyon 21”, and last year switched to a silky. No comparison. The Agawa is great but it can easily bite the digits and the blade tends to bind (at least for me). I am a silky fan from here on out as well! Nice review!
One problem I kept having with the buck saw was smacking my hand. Happened more than once. I love the Silky. Hopefully I can keep up my record of no snapped blades. Fingers crossed.
Great review, and good to openly admit defeat lol. Actually you may have just sold me on the saw because I was a buck saw fan but hearing what you had to say got me thinking
@@ItsGoodintheWoods been good to me. Work for tree service gotten few years out of it. Time for new blade thou 🤣 for money can’t complain out lasted all other ones work has gotten. Also have their pole saws and loppers. As do landscaping as well
I use a Silky Gumboy curved 210 with a Japanese Okatsune pruner because there is a double scabbard that fits both of them. Its just perfect for the garden and fruit tree meadows must because I can handle 95% of all jobs that don't need a chainsaw. I use the same gumboy curved outdoors its such a no brainer. I even use finer teeth Silky saw to cut PVC cable tubes for electric wireing just because the cuts are much finer and more professional.
I don't have the big boy, but a step down I bought at a mower shop. I keep it my truck all the time. I went down the solo canoe rabbit hole. Could you please share what your favorite canoe chair back? i.e Crazy Creek etc. Also kayak paddles? Sorry I know this is off topic.
I like the Crazy Creek for the lighter trips. The GCI is another good one, but heavier. Kayak paddles, that is a tough one. I would say do your research and get the one at the top end of what you are willing to spend.
@@ItsGoodintheWoodssounds like you've used the boreal from the video, so, ignoring ease of deployment, which cuts wood faster or easier? Boreal 21 or the silky? The silky would be safer I think, I've busted knuckles several times using the Boreal, but I'm curious which cuts wood faster /easier One thing I like about the boreal is it is easy and cheap to replace the blade on it
Boreal wins hands down for cheaper and easier blade replacement. I really can’t say which is faster, I would say they are quite close, Especially with a dry wood blade. But I can say, when you get a good solid two hand grip on the silky, it’s really fast. So when it comes to cutting a lot of bigger stuff, I think the silky might win. Just on comfort alone. No doubt the Boreal is a real nice saw. Can’t go wrong.
I ended up with the Silky Gomboy because I saw it as the right size for a backpacking use case. I've broken the tip off. Twice. I feel like they need to add some hardener or something to their steel. Or maybe I just need to pay better attention when sawing? Another saw I've gotten a lot of use from is the Sven saw. It performs well and feels easier to use than the Silky.
I have heard a lot of people say they have broken a blade. That has not happened to me yet, and I am a bit surprised. I have folded mine over pretty good on several occasions, has yet to break. I am sure it is coming though....
I'm on team Silky with the f180 when light backpacking. However, when I need to really process some big lumber in the winter, I am fully on board with Agawa's Boreal 21".
i think this saw and a fiskars x11 tools are invaluable to the back packer , survivalist , camper. very easy to cut and split firewood. compact and light weight. the best set up, firewood is done. o yeah.
Nice review. One day I'll upgrade to a quality saw. So far I'm happy with an inexpensive Rexbeti dry wood 11" folding saw that I picked up. Like you said ignorance is bliss.😉🙃 I also know from your videos, you process a lot more wood camping than I do.
Silky saws are Awesome...! Buck & bow saws are a bit of a pain. I have yet to see one that will out perform a Silky Saw. I find that my Silky Bigboy 2000 is the most versatile and paired with a thick blade Machete... The axe or hatchet stays home! For the same carry weight, the Silky Machete combination will do more for you than an axe. Thanks for the video...
I agree. At this point I very rarely bring an axe along. For the most part I find it is not needed. Winter trips and serious comfort canoe trips, I bring one. Other than that it stays at home. Thanks for watching and commenting
They cut on the pull. People under stress during "survival" mode should probably not use a Silky saw. Because "pushing" the saw to cut will cause the tip to bend and break.
I was waiting for the “getting into tight areas” comment. I used a 16” bow saw for years. I always had a sharp blade. But getting the right angle sometimes was a pain. Silky is great for that. BUT, it’s a learning curve. They cut on the draw. Folks snap blades using too much force on the down stroke. BTW I have owned two Woolrich shirts like yours for a long time. White and black buffalo and the red and black plaid. My everyday in the winter shirt. I rotate so I don’t wear em out. 😊 Cheers from Chicagoland.
I recently bought the Outback Pocketboy for my car’s bugout bag. Haven’t used it yet, but it looks like it will hold up well with proper use. Was considering the Gomboy variant, but I wasn’t digging the curved blade, and I’m also carrying an axe with it for if the situation calls for bigger cuts. Btw, I caught that Happy Gilmore reference 😂
