I worked with Mike for a year in Sicily. He didn't make it through Buds the first time. Great kid. That he went back and made it through the second time speaks volumes about his drive and commitment.

To sacrifice oneself so that your brother soldiers may live is a very noble act from a man that loved life.

I live a world away across the Atlantic in the west coast of Africa and the story of Mike inspires me. I am a preacher and he will be in my sermons. His selflessness depicts Jesus Christ. RiP Mike.

I must be beating a dead horse here but Mike Monsoor is far more admirable than Jesus (if he even existed) ever was. The story of Jesus is one of being sacrificed, not sacrificing oneself.
@Victor Torres No one asked Monsoor to jump on a grenade, but he did it anyway, and saved his team mates from death and grievous injury. Jesus was supposedly sent by a version of himself that knew what would happen, to suffer horribly and die not to actually save anyone, but absolve literally everyone of things they had and hadn't even done yet. In other words, to create a theological loophole (if you believe in Jesus, your sins are washed clean). Sacrifice is to give up something valuable to yourself, to promote something valuable for other people. It's not a sacrifice if you were coerced into doing it, and it definitely isn't if it isn't done to actually save anyone from anything real.

For him to respond so quickly in that situation makes this more than merely a great act of courage.... This was the definition of who and what he was as a Man and a Warrior. May his family find peace in the knowledge that they raised a great man.
Somewhat off-topic. But his great action reminded me of the first Captain America movie where skinny Steve jumps on the fake grenade while everyone else around him jumped away.
Is jumping on the grenade taught at training? Or is it just the instinct of the soldier to do so? Either way it's heroic.

Why?, because every member of your Team, Squad, Platoon, Company, Battalion, Regiment, Brigade, Division and even member of other branches are like a family, (an extremely close family),and when the ammunition start flying on your way hissing by you, Our Servicemembers only have each other, and they'll do whatever is needed when the time comes to defend his/her family. Every Officer, NCO learned throughout their first years of SERVICE that their main job is; To PROTECT the Men under your Command and to Complete the Mission, in the extreme case that you couldn't do both, your job is to complete the Mission. It is said that the definition of Courage is "to do the right thing knowing that it can cause extreme bodily harm or cost you your life". Believe me, every men who's lead men into combat knows and feels that they couldn't live with themselves if they loose men and they could've done something to prevent that, and the other thing is, "what am I going to tell his family when I go back?". So if a grenade comes in your perimeter there's NO time to warn your brothers,(a grenade fuse is
3-5 seconds since you release it from the hand), and if no one does something about it a lot more men will loose their life, some others stay back knowing that they'll pay the ultimate price so the rest of their Team or unit can go back to his/her family This are some of the things that most of the civilians take for granted and a high % don't care to the point that they despise our Servicemembers to the point of telling nasty things, insulting, makind demeaning coments because they don't know any better and don't CARE. It is said that "no one loves the sheepdog untill the wolf is on site to have a good meal". I hope that I've answered your question.

It has happened a few times throughout history, by a very brave and dedicated person who's love for their team is greater than their urge for survival itself. Only the most pure of heart could ever do such a thing. It is the very definition of selfless love for your fellow man.

When I watch these videos, nothing in my life makes me worth a shit, when I see and hear of the ultimate sacrifices these men have given!
If you truly feel that nothing you have done is meaningful, then make a change. Put yourself out there to serve your community in one way or another. Mike Monsoor’s actions were the ultimate display of altruism, but in a sense you see it every day with first responders who are willing to risk their lives for people. Perhaps that might be something that would make you feel more accomplished.

Michael Monsoor went to my high school. I’m a junior at Garden Grove High School and there we have the stadium named after him and we get to practice and play in it every Friday. Our coach is always telling us about the pride we should have to play in a stadium in his honor and there are even some older teachers I’ve had that remember the student he was.

I am sending a call out to our singer-songwriters in the US, to FINALLY write about the US Navy, a branch no one seems to understand. I’m working on that as well. I have recently begun actually using social media (hate it) to describe life in the US Navy, from Battlegroups, to our purpose at sea, and to THE FINEST Spec Ops group in the WORLD...obvi, the US Navy SEALS!! How SAD so few people realize we are protecting the world’s shipping lanes as well as the multiple levels of protection we provide for countries beyond our own.

we have a similar story here in israel: Roi Klein (July 10, 1975-July 26, 2006) was an Israeli major in the Golani Brigade of the Israeli Defense Forces (and one of its most highly decorated soldiers) who died during the 2006 Lebanon War. Klein was killed in the Battle of Bint Jbeil after jumping on a grenade to save his fellow soldiers.

I lived beside the Monsoor base in Campo. Out walking in the desert area, I was often stopped by young men coming and going to the range there, and they'd stop and offer the old guy a ride. Always the best look on those young men, you knew these were America's best. I always wished them well with the Teams, and gave them a "Roger that!" often in return to their own, since that was something Monsoor was known for and they'd slyly want to know how much I might know about their base. It's not advertised. These young men...always first to volunteer and go forward. Plus these young people? They would always offer an old Army vet a ride. Roger that!

I’ve thought about what he did for over a decade and wonder how the United States produces such young men?

I'll disagree slightly. What Michael Monsoor did he did in a matter of seconds. There was something within him that reacted by throwing himself between the threat and his buddies, an almost parental reaction of protection. Some people are born with that heightened protective reaction, in some it is something that their life experiences kick-start. There is no way to tell who will have the reaction. It is not very many, but it will be a good deal higher than .000000001%. People who become members of elite military and/or law enforcement and first response teams are probably statistically more likely to act like Michael Monsoor. Of course none of this in any way decreases his heroic act in any way whatsoever. Awarding him a Medal Of Honor and naming a ship after him? I'll bet he is getting a kick out of this in Valhalla, wondering over a tall viking ale what all of the fuss is about. He did what he was instinctively driven to do, when he had to do it, to save the lives of his comrades.

The answer to your question is by being a country like no other; a country worth loving, a country worth defending, a country worth killing for, and a country worth dying for.
As a Marine Corps Veteran myself I can tell you that while I was at boot camp at Parris Island during the final training event called The Crucible, that they have obstacles named after Marine and Navy Medal of Honor Winners. You would be surprised at how many Medals of Honor have been awarded for jumping on a grenade to save the rest of your teams lives!!! That takes some serious stones to do!!!! There is a Marine in South Carolina who is pretty disfigured in the face now. His name is Kyle Carpenter. He did the exact same thing and dove on a grenade in Iraq but somehow survived despite being horrible wounded and disfigured for life. He also was awarded The Medal of Honor. To give you an idea of how selfless and brave of an act you have to do to be awarded that medal... 80 percent of all The Medal of Honors awarded are posthomously awarded. I sometimes find myself doubting my beloved country, but when i hear about heros like Michael Monsoor, i know the American fighting spirit is as strong as it was since Bunker Hill, Gettysburg, and Normandy. God Bless every man and woman in a US uniform. And God bless my beloved country🇺🇸

No matter what word is used to describe Mike Monsoor it will no doubt be an understatement.
Some are lucky enough not to have a clue ..the REAL WORLD IS A VIOLENT PLACE ..AND SOME LIVE WITH KNOWING THIS..BLESS ALL WHO SERVE THANK YOU ALL..AMEN
I can’t fathom that kind of selfless bravery. Most people use “jumping on a grenade” as a metaphor. This guy actually did the unthinkable in order to save his brothers. Unbelievable. I don’t know whether there’s an afterlife, but I can’t help but hope there’s some sort of reward waiting on the other side of a sacrifice of that magnitude.

Before his last mission before going home, he broke his arm and could stay in camp...
lucky for him because the vehicle he would sit in was hit by a RPG and 6 out of 8 where killed.
I think every soldier has the right to get an honor-medal for his duty...no matter wich country he lives in!
I mean... Not every "soldier" is on the frontlines, most aren't. I think it does a disservice to men like Michael Monsoor to call every person in the military a "hero," because they certainly are not all heroes; most of them aren't. Don't get me wrong, I respect all military personnel but I think "hero" status should be reserved for people like Michael who actually prove themselves by showing incomprehensible amounts of bravery, intelligence and selflessness.
Edit: I'm not saying a soldier has to die to be revered as a hero, because there are many real life versions of superheroes in all branches of the military who survive their encounters with near-death, but as I said above I don't think "hero" should be tossed around so casually.

A soldier does received a medal for their duty. Example a young soldier just finish his training and gets deployed to afghanistan, he will receive 1 or 2 or a few medals like global war on terror campaign medal and national defense medal and more. If he or she ever gets killed or wounded in combat he/she will receive the purple heart. Not easy to be called Hero but Michael Monsoor definitely is a Hero.
It is sad, but also wonderful. That moment is now his for all eternity. Men like him are remembered forever, and they deserve every ounce of that notoriety.
This man jumped on a grenade to save his brothers in arms. Much respect to you sir and may you rest in peace. From a Canadian. I would have been honored to serve with you.
