Boot camp was stressful for like 2 weeks and then you get over it. After that the routine becomes natural and its more about counting down the days till graduation, every guy in my division had a calendar lol with all our important days labeled and I would scratch out the next day all the time at lights out. Everything else is super simple though.

My fiancé(19) who recently graduated with me from highschool went to bootcamp about a week ago, I miss him more than ever right now. Before he had left we were inseparable and always with each other. I hope he's doing okay and keeping himself healthy at the same time. All I've been doing is praying to God for his safety along with the other future sailors. His plan is to serve 20 years, and I'll always be there for him and support him to achieve goals.

As a Navy veteran, I can honestly say that most sailors seemed surprisingly unmotivated. They constantly complained about even the simplest tasks, and I was shocked by how little work actually got done. I had high respect for the military before joining, but my experience changed that-it felt more like a joke. Many sailors spent most of their time in air-conditioned rooms playing video games, and the ship was often in poor condition. Surprisingly, some of the laziest people were among the officers and chiefs. Only a few roles, like culinary specialists, boatswain’s mates, and engineers, consistently worked hard. I had an easy role in interior communications as an electrician, but we rarely did any real electrical work; instead, we mostly just swapped out broken equipment for refurbished or new parts. Two years of electrician training felt like a waste. The USS Shiloh was dark, filthy, and depressing, and some people even resented me for simply doing my job because it made them look lazy. I can’t believe our tax dollars are funding such a complacent system.

I went thru Great Lakes bootcamp in 1976 (ironically, Company 936, Special Units). We were companies back then, not divisions. Red ropers were Company Commanders. Each company, approximately 80 recruits, had one CC and an assistant that wore a light blue rope. Most of the time they were E2 or E3 recent graduates awaiting assignment to their A Schools. They were the CC's gofer and admin asst. I got IT twice. Back then, after evening chow, when everyone else was chilling and getting ready for the next day, if you had IT you had to report to the drill hall in full winter uniform with peacoat and watch cap and they worked you out for an hour. I was so tired I needed help getting into my top rack.

I went to Great Lakes in 1972. I just remember being screamed at constantly! LOL For some reason, our company didn't have any firearms training at all. We didn't have to do the obstacle course either! Other companies did both, but ours? Nope. I never did figure out why we didn't have to. We did go to lots of classroom training though.
