He never said they were “pausing the Georgia plant” although he didn’t deny it either. It can simply be that the GA plant won’t be ready in time for the R2. They save time and money by beginning production in Normal, IL first.

I kinda hope that Apple buys Rivian, as Rivian is desperately in need of a cash infusion, and Apple seems to want to become a player in the EV biz. While Rivian has created some good products, losing $35k a copy isn't a really viable business model. It's unclear to me how they get from where they are to becoming a really viable business without making some major changes in a really tough macro environment.
While losing $35k per vehicle is factually correct is it a short sighted view since that is trending downwards with each vehicle they deliver. All start ups experience this.

Hey RJ, you do get those range if you charge at 100% though I get it its lower when they suggest keeping it 85-90%, but for daily driving, perfectly fine. Who drives 280 miles everyday anyway unless u are on a long trip. Now that Rivian will open their own charging station along with Tesla... plus IONNA coming soon, range anxiety will be a thing in the past.
With automotive vehicle manufacturing, scale is everything. Selling a lower-priced vehicle will improve the economy of scale, thus lowering the overall cost to manufacture it. Can't stress this enough, if they can reach scale then it will be profitable to sell. The same thing happened to Tesla when they started selling the Model 3 and Y at 100,000 - 300,000 units per year.
@@landlboys You are right but also wrong, yes of course having economies of scale will make a difference, but Rivian case is not the same as the Tesla you mentioned, Tesla did have a profit per vehicle sold since the begging but the over head and other expanses made them unprofitable for a while, Rivian is the opposite, they lose mony for ev sold, without counting extra expenses, Make more evs will mean more losses.

Excitement from the consumers isn't surprising if they know product cost more to make than for them to pay. Rivian isn't offering this feature set at $45K because of some DFM prowess resulting in low cost to manufacture and hence great profit; it's offering this feature set at this price because that's what needed to get attention. If you were the owner and your officer comes with this business plan, how would you react? Yet, the shareholders (part owners) are drinking this up.

Hydrogen cars not the future. Hydrogen semis and heavy vehicles, perhaps. Hydrogen planes, maaaybe. But hydrogen infrastructure is a bazillion times more expensive than EV infrastructure. You can't simply repurpose gasoline infrastructure for hydrogen and expect to do it cheap or reliably.
I love Rivian. But placing the new charge port at the rear right after knowing they're joining the Tesla network is dumbfounding. They had 2 proper choices -- the rear left, or better still, the front right. And they've missed both times -- first with the front left and now with the left rear. I'm speechless. How can such a smart company be so dumb? And the pause on the Georgia plant is really concerning.
1) Cost savings. The R2 has all the high voltage components in the back, they chose to put charging in the back to achieve cost savings. 2) Curbside charging. They're making this for the European market as well, where curbside charging is huge. It's not just for America. 3) Tesla superchargers not being able to support both left and right side charging was a big design flaw on Tesla's part. They should've thought of that before offering up their charger to become the North American standard. When your charging lot gets full even with half the stalls empty, that's a planning failure. Longer cables, centrally-placed chargers would have avoided this issue entirely. Gas stations figured out how to support left and right side fueling literal decades ago. Tesla needs to catch up. 4) Georgia plant should've never been pursued, Rivian still hasn't maxed out their capacity at the illinois plant. This was a smart move.
I do not believe in Rivian, because they do not produce many EVs. I am not impressed with their current expensive model. I drove it, but I would not buy it. My concern is a service, because if it breaks that could be a problem, at least Tesla makes a lot of cars and has a good service.
No Full Self Driving upgrade available if desired? No deal. Pass. It is a car with hardware, but without the best software. Even their best hardware BEST range is 300 miles. So the basic model is going to likely be in the low 200 mile range. Pass again. Plus, this is a five-seater, without option for seven. Pass again.
Rivian drivers don't care about self-driving, they're taking it offroading. The R1 is for 7seats, the R2 is smaller, of course it's going to have less seats.

Charging it at public charger is a lot more expensive than at home charging. Those power stations often don’t work too.
