How to speed up retopology in Maya 2022 using primitives

  • A really short video for beginners showing how to speed up the retopology process in Maya. This trick involves using primitives like a cylinder, placing it along your model( ideally a shape similar to the primitive you are using) and using the Quad Draw tool to activate retopology. This is a simple way to add clean topology to a model without having to draw each point manually which can be very time consuming. This trick can be used in any Maya version which comes with the modelling toolkit so pretty much any version at this point.
This video is mainly for beginners learning 3D modelling with Maya.
    #Shorts Hope it helps!

Blender can do this, too, you just have to turn on the magnet tool.
The thing is, Maya has a smooth brush in order to remove the stress in faces. They also have a way for removing vertices and quads more easily, so blender would need to run a bit in order to catch up

Just try to do it general to specific, like this video does. I generally make 4 faces cylinders directly with quad draw on legs and arms. Then, before adding loops around, i connect them up on the torso. Connecting 20 faces instead of 200 is super easy, then you can add geometry.

RetopoFlow for Blender is infinitely faster than messing around with primitives, Just draw lines and a connecting mesh is created around the body part, can change the loop count too. Highly recommend if anyone here has not tried it. FlippedNormals has a great video on all of the add-on's tools.

Just project the details of the high poly on the low poly with normal or displ map
