    .44 mag was the first caliber I ever started reloading for, I was 18 then. i'm 64 now and have reloaded many others, but the 44 is still my favorite.

      Yeah, shoots great with my Oregon Trail .431 size cast bullets or any factory jacketed ammo I've used, but it did not like smaller cast bullets at all.

    I'm an Aussie and when i turned 15 in the 1970s i got my gun license and my father bought me a brand new Winchester 44 mag lever action for pig hunting. I literally put 1000's of hot rounds through it and never once had a problem with it. I loved that gun so much, i still regret selling it to this day.

      @@MattH-wg7ou its not that complicated, they just took most handgun and semi & full auto weapons. You can still have bolt and lever actions, as well as shotguns and air rifles. Handguns can be had once you join a target club and obtain the licence.

    Marlin uses their patented Microgroove rifling in most of their rifles, but in the cowboy models with the octagonal barrels, they use the deep-cut Ballard type rifling. They just tend to get the bore a bit big in some of the .44's apparently.

    Thanks hickock45. I just got my first 44 mag rifle (Henry Big Boy) a couple of weeks ago. It is a blast to shoot. My head was prepared for the usual blast of a pistol. The rifle was so easy and mild in comparison.

    @Roberthurz , You'll really enjoy it. I didn't think I'd ever want a pistol caliber rifle and thought it was unfortunate that I'd have to buy one when I decided to do cowboy shooting matches. There I had a perfectly good "cowboy" .45-70 in the 1886.
    Well, it turned out to be a favorite firearm genre. I really enjoy shooting my 1894s in .45 Colt and .44 Magnum,as well as the Uberti 1873 in .45 Colt.
    Good luck with it.

    being about your age and shooting 44 mag since 73... I too did not get a 44 mag lever gun till a few years back. I went with the Henry and as you say... My SWC bullets just would not feed or were too long! that was weird but I ended up loving the WFN cast bullets in the gun and my revolvers too. I absolutely agree on the skinner and peep sight thing for older eyes also. I am only 6' tall but have long arms so the recoil pad thing was spot on for me too. They are a kick to shoot along with my revolvers.

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  14 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Through experimenting I found the answer. When my bullets were hitting the cardboard sidways at about 12 yards, I knew I had quite a problem. I still have some .429-.430 bullets loaded for handguns, but I'm not buying anything under .431 again. Gradually, I'll phase into nothing but the .431 bullets so that I can shoot them in anything.

  • @chadoistad

    Oh man, you have no idea how much frustration you just resolved for me with your discussion of the proper bullet diameter for this gun. I recently bought an 1894 .44 mag to match my hunting handgun and the tumbling lead bullets have been killing me. I've been shooting expensive jacketed rounds for practice. Excellent video.

    I don't have anything to add to the gun debate; I'm not an american and never grew up with guns other than for hunting. But I do appreciate clever design, precision engineering, quality manufacturing etc., and there is a lot of that to be found in firearms. You always have something interesting to say about the history of the weapon, how it functions, personal thoughts etc. I've never fired a gun but I enjoy your videos and it would be sad to see your passion taken from you and the like-minded.

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  15 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The .45-70 is a fun gun, too. The .44 or .45 Colt would be something you'd probably shoot more, just like a handgun (same round).
    I recommend you get both! :-) I really like the Marlin Cowboy version of the .45-70. It's a model '95, I believe, and the Guide Gun is special, too.

    Great video, thanks for this. I have a Winchester M94 in .44 Mag and love it. I had the tumbling problem you mentioned when driving cast bullets beyond 1100fps, which were .429" RNFP's so your advice sheds light on that issue. And you're right, the handiness of a 20" levergun has to be experienced to be appreciated.

    Question about the Ghost Ring. I purchased a new Henry 45/70 in August last year that was equipped with the X/S sights. To save my life, I just could not make that sight work for me. I am 74 years old, and have used the Buckhorn sights, and scopes since the age of 10. Singing some praise now,,,,,,I contacted Henry Arms and explained the problem, and learned that the new Henry 45/70 comes with the Buckhorn sight. Well, the Henry folks told me that if the X/S sights were unusable for me,,, just to ship my rifle to the factory, and the would replace it with a new rifle with the open sights.
    My cost ? 20 dollars to ship the rifle to Rice Lake WI., and 20 dollars for the FFL transfer fee. Period. How about that for customer service ? Can't beat Henry .
    Well ,,, now I have a 45/70 lever action that I can use, and I love the Henry.
    I also have a Golden Boy in 22 mag, and a Big Boy in 45 long colt. All great rifles.
    Saw your vid on the 1860 Henry,,, now that will be my next Henry.
    Thanks for the great videos . Rod

    LOVE the video Hickok!! Great job. I've got a Marlin 1894 in .44 magnum and I wholeheartedly agree with you....these lever guns are fun to shoot. And, if I do say so myself, my particular Marlin is insanely accurate. When it comes to marksmanship, I am certainly no slouch....but neither am I the best shot on the block. But my Marlin sure does make me look good!

    Hickock is the most passionate non hunter gunnut I've ever seen! Most non hunters I know don't even know what end of the gun the bullet comes out! Nice reviews Hickock. About the crossbolt, lawyer safety, I like it for safely unloading a lever rifle but put it back to fire position and use the hammer as a safety when hunting. Nothin worse than jumping a buck out of a Cooley and snapping that rifle to your shoulder and having it go click!

  • @hickok45

    Reactive targets are fun. For longer range, small caliber ,I fill a plastic milk jug with sand (add water) and hang it from a tree branch on 4-6 feet of rope.If I was shooting large caliber, I would probably try a yellow 5 gallon container . Its also a good way to save the lead for reuse...assumeing you are able to hit the target once in a while. :-)
    Another target idea....back in the 90's I wondered "what use could I find for all of these darn AOL cd's I get in the mail? A simple nail in a wooden backstop ,with a cd/dvd makes for one bright target that will shatter in the cold.They can be attached to just about anything with double back tape.

    How do the .431 bullets work in your pistols? Do you have to buy 2 different diameters of bullet for pistol/rifle or do the .431s run well in both?

    • @bushwhackedonvhs
      @bushwhackedonvhs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With cast bullets, typically they will swage in the barrel. You may get some pressure spikes if the barrel is indeed too small but it will be accurate.

  • @MoshiMoshiKaji

    Funny you should ask, I just bought a Rossi 38 special/357, I love it. The 357 hits hard and if you don't want to shoot the expensive ammo you can always go with 38 special. I chose it over 44 mag because I felt it was a more "all around" choice for hunting,self defense and survival. Hope this helps bud, If you buy you you won't be disappointed.

  • @Dan-yw9sg
    @Dan-yw9sg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So, given the choice, would you go with the Winchester Model 94 in 30-30. Or the Marlin in .44 Magnum?

    • @johnharrington4757
      @johnharrington4757 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recommend whatever ammo you can afford the .30.30 is much more expensive to shoot than .44mag

    • @johnt4060
      @johnt4060 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John Harrington idk man, I've seen boxes of 44 ammo going for around $25-$35, but 30-30 ammo usually runs for $10-$15 a box. But that's just where I live.
      But comparing between a winchester '94 30-30 and a Marlin 1894 44mag, it all depends on what you'll use it for.

    • @johnharrington4757
      @johnharrington4757 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i was going online prices so idk if that is universal but in my area 30-30 is way more.

    • @kevinkelly1529
      @kevinkelly1529 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the side ejection of the Marlin. Winchester/Marlin are equally reliable. Overall, 30-30 is a better round than the .44. But .44 is a little bit easier to reload and you can fit more rounds in the magazine. Buy what you like the best.

    As a handloader, I agree. The combo thing isn't as big a deal in these modern days, think, as it was in the wild west when you were out on your horse in the mountains for weeks or months. For cowboy shooting matches, it's nice.
    Now days, one might actually WANT a different caliber handgun because it might offer something special (10mm, .44 mag, etc.).

    The GBL is the blued one. The 1895SBL is probably the one you'd be most interested in of current production models. It comes with a rail segment on top of the receiver and the XS sights stock, which you may or may not like, but is stainless w/ 6+1 capacity.
    I bought mine at a local store in College Station, TX. You should have much better luck finding some of the 18.5" models since they are currently in production (most of the Rem ones are OK, just check before you buy!).

    @gotindrachenhart , I don't do that. If I'm going to step up to a really hot round, I just load jacketed rounds. Not sure a gas check would increase the diameter or improve the seal of the bullet?

    Had my Marlin .44 lever action about a year now and it is my favorite gun I own. I just got my second deer with it this deer season at 75 yards with iron sights. Great gun, I just wish that it was a little cheaper to shoot.

    I just bought the 1894 Marlin 44 today. Actually my wife bought it for me for my birthday. It is the standard 44 not the limited edition with the Octagon barrel. I bought some snap caps and have been fooling around with it until I can go out and shoot it next week. Very sweet! It's my first lever gun in a pistol cartridge! Yeee Haawww!

    definitely agree on the toughness of those plate targets. even at 15 yards, I have missed quite a bit on those plates shooting stages.

    The Marlin 1894C 357 Mag, 18.5", @ the right price, has proven to be a formidable treasure hunt for the last few months. : ( I should've bought 1 in the '80's

    I have the marlin 1894 with the round barrel and with my dad's hand loads I had the same issue you were having his rounds were 430 I purchased some bitterroot Valley ammo in 240gr. and they worked amazing turns out they were 431 I started shooting my rifle with 431 and my ruger and Dan Wesson with 431 and accuracy picked up with them also now 431 bullets are all I shoot.

    Great vid, thanks. I bought mine years ago , when Marlins came with micro groove barrels, it is great with jacketed but poor with cast or plated unless loaded very light

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just depends on your purpose (hunting, plinking, etc.)
    Any of them should work fine. I've fired 180 gr softpoints and 240 grain softpoints (Winchester & Remington). They all work fine, but I like the point of aim better for the heavier bullets.
    If you handload, be sure to use the biggest diameter bullets you can find. Mine didn't like .429 or .430 bullets at all. They tumbled at 20 yards.

    It might be in some areas. Depends on what model you're looking for. Gander Mountain seems to have these things whenever I'm in there.
