Autistic meltdowns look like panic or anxiety attacks sometimes, but are actually a result of overstimulation. Hence getting misdiagnosed with anxiety is common.

Hey, I have severe anxiety, and thought this might help you to help others. I describe anxiety severity on a 1-30 scale: 1-10 anxiety episode- manageable but uncomfortable 11-20 anxiety attack focus starts to waver and more mental effort is required to keep body functions normal. This is where hyperventilating, nausea, and numbness and tingling through the body start. 21-30 panic attack - unable to think clearly or focus, almost all mental facilities needed to keep the body somewhat stable, vertigo, memory issues, may faint, sometimes throw up or get dry heaves. If you have a patient that doesn't know how to describe their anxiety or the severity of it maybe this will help. Take care and be well!

Panic attacks are honestly one of the most terrifying things I've ever experienced. The thudding heartbeat, ears rushing, uncontrollable crying, eugh. I hate it. At their worst my arms and hands, sometimes even my torso, will go completely stiff and immobile. Takes me a good few minutes before I'm even able to unclench my fists. I end up having to take a looooong nap afterward

I’ve had times where my panic attacks are so bad they put me into extreme dissociation AND my movement is locked. Once in class I had calmed down from a panic attack, but was in a body lock and dissociative state. The entire class period was me just trying to move my foot enough to bang on the wall enough to get my teacher’s attention because I couldn’t talk, no matter how many times I tried. I literally had no control over my body.
Thankfully she eventually saw me after I finally was able to talk. I asked her to just move my arm to get me started and I could move the rest of my body on my own from there.
Not being in control of my body and being in derealization at the same time is probably one of the scariest experiences of my life.

When I was in high school I would often have this lingering feeling that something was terribly wrong, but could never find a reason to persuade myself that anything was actually going wrong. What was weird was that the feeling never appeared instantaneously, but slowly ramped up so for a while I had no clue that I felt this way until I asked myself what was causing the feeling. Not that my anxiety isn't caused by a specific issue in life, but sometimes there was nothing specific to be anxious about and the feeling was literally just sitting in the back of my head.

A method I learned from a therapist was to treat the feelings of an oncoming panic attack like a sneeze. The fear of having an attack often just makes it worse, but if you accept it and even try to make it happen, it won't.
    *Feels oncoming attack*
"Good! Just happen already! Once I get this over with, I'll feel so much better, and be able to get on with my day. I'm going to take deep breaths, and it will be over. Do it!"
And often, that's enough to make the attack either completely subside or drastically shortened.

I have the 10 minute ones; short and sweet, and the ones that last for almost an hour to where after I couldn’t open my hands or feel my face. So for all of you out there who go through this; the crying, the hyperventilating, the uncontrollable saliva and nasal drip, the shaking, muscle fatigue afterwards, the 1000lb weight on your chest; YOU ARE ALL AMAZING!!!

When I’m having an anxiety attack, I sort of shut down and go numb. I can still do all the things I need to do to an extent, but I’m silent, empty and breathing harder.
As for a panic attack, I get the insane heart beating, hyperventilation, sometimes throw in some crying, feeling way too many awful feelings all at once and being overwhelmed.
For me personally that’s the difference. Got diagnosed with anxiety disorder like 9 years ago now and you never really get used to it. You can adapt around it and do what you know works for you. The good thing? These attacks DO pass every time. In that regard, you will always end up ok in the end.

Anxiety attacks for me are a build up of anxiety that peaks when the thing I’m anxious about happens. For example: it’s the night of a play and I’m the lead role and I’m super nervous and anxious. What happens if I mess up? What if people laugh? Omg people, so many people are gonna be looking at me! And these worries just keep building up and I’m about to walk on stage but I simply can’t because I’ve worked myself up and now I can’t breathe and I’m shaking

      @galaxy_kitten95 ปีที่แล้ว +17

I agree. It’s the same exact case wi the me as well.
My anxiety is very situational. The level of severity from the situation itself dictates how my body responds and feels, even when it’s completely dissolved. I can never shake the feeling off on my own. I have to force myself to allow distractions. The onset for myself having a bad anxiety attack lasts for around 40 minutes or longer. Small cases of anxiety lasts half than that, sometimes lesser.
I’ve had a really bad experience at work recently and only now I do feel completely fine. The incident occurred only one week ago. I also tend to become a deer in headlights as I just freeze up and remain still and silent as the anxious feeling begins to eat me up, resulting in the uncontrollable shaking feeling. I feel as though I want to disappear entirely. 😢

There's actually one more that I found out recently and I thought was crazy at first but when I dug into it more I actually found myself and my anxiety relating a lot to it.
Something called silent panic attacks. I can give you the definition real quick
Definition: This is when someone who is diagnosed with a panic or anxiety disorder has a panic attack without displaying any outward symptoms whatsoever. Someone who has silent panic attacks could have them in public, at home, in the office, or virtually anywhere without anyone noticing, or realizing that something was wrong.
Symptoms: Feeling dizzy or tingling in your limbs, derealization or depersonalization, your heart rate increases or feels like it's skipping a beat, intrusive thoughts, nausea, headaches, your throat closes up, and/or changes in your vision.
I looked into this when I realized that my therapists I've talked for a short while before they quit for another job, for her to have diagnosed me with anxiety but I've only had one or two outward panic attacks made no sense. How do I have such bad anxiety according to her if I'm not prone to panic and/or anxiety attacks? Because I have silent ones. I looked it up, and found out panic attacks aren't always visible. Sometimes, it's that feeling of you're about to pass out but no one can tell. That feeling of anxiety when you give a speech or presentation, that's a silent panic attack you try and brave through.
So, y'all, believe your therapists when they say you have anxiety. Silent panic attacks are real, and happen more often than you might think.

This is neat. One thing that's really been affecting me recently is that in the past year, it's just like.. gotten easier, somehow. Anxiety attacks used to put me at a solid like, 14-17 on this scale, any given day. But now It's really confusing cause things that used to put me out of sorts only yield like.. a 3 nowadays. And something that would have made me break down get maybe a 6. My body still does the things I used to- unresponsiveness, heart palpitations, giving up because i know i can't- couldn't- but my mind just kind of.. stays okay. There's just this confounding sense of absence. I'm not really that distressed, I just know I should be. I can even kind of laugh at it, cause its so strange. I'm just here, and I never learned how to actually function in these situations because my anxiety showed up when i was so young, so I just kind of do nothing. It doesn't really hurt that much anymore. Nothing does.

Unfortunately I'm still figuring that part out, so I don't have much in explainable techniques yet. It's all mostly still in the prototype phase. I’ve had anxiety attacks and I’ve had physical reactions. Shaking, crying, heart beating fast, intense fear. Anxiety attacks are horrible, and the worst part is I have severe anxiety, so they happen a lot, even when I have nothing to be afraid of. My mind will race and think of things that will never happen, or start going into the future and doing “what ifs” and I have them. Anxiety takes over my life.

I had a I think the doctors said panic attack.
    Story:
once when my mother left me to go to to our home land, hawaii, I had heart burn or something, I went home from the nurses office and the next night I was on the phone with my mother. I was breathing ragged and loud, she realized and told me to go ask my roomate for help, my roomate and aunt asumed it was an alergic reaction, my words were something along the lines of, "I can't breath," I was sobbing, I really couldn't breathe, we hopped into the van and I was crying hard, like I never had before. We arrived and I went into the room, it was late at night, and after I found out my mom had to pay 1,000 dollars because of it, she still talks about it😭

Just a bit of advice. I've dealt with panic attacks in a professional environment and was designated as the on call for people suffering from panic attacks. Look up various breathing exercises. Deep breaths in slow release slows the heart rate and also gives you something else to focus on I typically recommend a 4 count. Also to reduce your anxiety meditation techniques don't go expensive there's plenty of decent meditations on TH-cam

Anxiety and panic ar part of a spectrum actually. Anxiety stresses the body, piling up body with stress can lead to panic attacks.Stress includes environment, your social problems, your health physically, whether you sleep enough, eat right, work out etc or not.Caffeine is stress to the body. You just need to boost awareness of your own self and your body to get better. Don't wait for yourself to go through a bad breakdown to get help.

When I have an anxiety attack, I feel like I can’t organize my thoughts into anything coherent or helpful. Often it’ll repeat a statement version of whatever triggered it, over and over so I can’t think anything else. I often go really still and can’t talk very easily, and I feel like my mind gets tunnel vision and I have to shove my way through it to get out (aka breathing and grounding exercises only work after it’s over)
Just an example of what an anxiety attack can be like

This is so helpful in demonstrating the differences between the two.
Thankfully I don't have them a lot, but panic attacks really do feel like you're either dying or having a heart attack. And they can come out of nowhere too.
For example, in my freshman year of college, I had randomly had one while taking a morning shower. Like, I was completely fine then all of a sudden, my chest got tight, I barely could breathe, and I generally just knew something was wrong. For some reason I was able to stay calm enough to finish what I was doing and get back to my dorm. Freaked the hell out of my roommate though (more so because I was really quiet through the attack). Learned later that I had a panic attack when I discussed it with the medical team.
Really is no joke, but videos like these are always helpful.

    • @Holytitmouse
      @Holytitmouse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

As someone with panic disorder, and who has had more panic attacks than I'd like to mention, yeah. It sounds like a panic attack. You don't always get the 'feeling like you're gonna die' symptom, because it presents in very different ways for lots of people. Hyperventilation with no other cause, (if it's in combination with several other symptoms such as racing heart, sense of either utter despair or extreme fear, nausea, clammy skin, etc) is a symptom of a panic attack. I'd still be wary because it's also a symptom of a lot of other things, but the main cause is anxiety.
However! Anxiety alone can cause hyperventilation. If it isn't accompanied by extreme fear, or panic, it's probably generalized anxiety. You won't always get the sense of doom, but a panic attack WILL always be accompanied by a sense of panic, extreme fear, or even a feeling of going crazy. You'll always be panicking, with a panic attack. No panic, not a panic attack

Personally I find the definition of anxiety attacks to be quite similar to a panic attack just less noticeable, unless that is just me having silent panic attack. God bless ✝️💖

Anxiety Attack is silent but deadly. You can feel it but you have to pretend you don't have it and slowly compiles inside u.

Anxiety attacks are more inside your head when panic attacks have physical symptoms like shaking, loss of breath, dizziness etc
Edit: yall I'm sorry for the misunderstanding
This is just from my personal experiences, not everyone is the same 😭

    • @transsnack
      @transsnack ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not all of them do, and I think it's important to remember that everyone is different. I have silent, or limited symptom, panic attacks. I have a lot of the internal physical and mental symptoms, but very few of the symptoms that are observable unless you really know what you're looking for. It sucks, because they're usually ignored by medical professionals as "not being as bad" as a full panic attack.

I remember making jokes about panic attacks in my teens. Then I had a real panic attack and I don’t make those jokes anymore. It was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced. I still get them but not as often or as strong. I’m glad that I figured out I was having panic attacks.

These kinds of videos really minimize anxiety attacks. Yeah, they don't come out of nowhere, but the sudden build up shakes you to your core. And I don't know what other people's symptoms are, but I have an immediate need for a bathroom, and if I've eaten anything recently, it's coming right back up. Add to that nervous sweating, full body shaking, teeth chattering, and rapid breathing. Never talk about anxiety attacks like they aren't just as bad as panic attacks. I've had milder ones that have lasted a week. I know what my triggers are now and I have medication I can take when I'm going to be in those kind of situations, but anxiety attacks are a serious problem.

My first panic attack ended me in the hospital. I couldn’t breathe and I had literally lost my mind. Checked myself into a mental asylum and thus began my rode to better my mental health and deal w/ addiction. Proud to say I’m 2 1/2 years sober/abstinent 🙌🏾 it’s hard dealing with a dual-diagnosis. It helps to have someone close outside of a healhcare professional to talk out your thoughts.

Thank you, I honestly didn't know how to differentiate it since I'm constantly anxious but sometimes in the middle of the night I would wake up with this crippling fear of dying.
The walls would start closing in on me and it would feel like the dark is suddenly much darker and I would be lying in bed crying, feeling like it's getting harder to breath. Most of the time I'd need an outside intervention to pull myself out of it or it would last longer than ten or fifteen minutes and it's always horrible.
I let my cats sleep on my bed now since they jump on me when they hear me start to cry and I get through it faster. Noone I've spoken with before could explain it except "may it's paranoia" or "it was probably just a nightmare" or "that's stupid, you're still to young to worry about death". z

Years ago, we nearly fell from a cliff. I was okay at first, but after a few seconds, I realized what happened and suddenly experienced difficulty in breathing. I was actually suffering from hyperventilation and I couldn't calm down at all for maybe half an hour or a quarter. One hour after that, I felt exhausted.

Anxiety attack: sudden feeling of fear and dread when everything is fine.
    Starts to depersonalize
Feel like I can't remember how to do a simple task because I start overthinking every little step.
Can't tell if I'm making sense when someone asks me a question because I'm depersonalizing and so my anxiety increases.
And here's my personal favourite: I usually get an irrational fear of losing my mind because it feels like that's what is happening.
How is this not in the DSM yet????😭
