  • Seeing as this is 46 min long, maybe you'd like to take this time to declutter your own makeup collection with me? I had no idea I had collected so many random products, many of which were influenced purchases! But now I have a much better idea of what I have and what I actually use/what's therefore worth keeping...as well as the kinds of products I will NOT buy again!
    0:00 omg hello stray hairs

    1:03 Bizet's "Carmen"
    1:12 now we're in the bathroom
    1:42 interrupted piano
    2:22 how many lip products were in my purse?!
    2:52 finally at the decluttering table
    3:16 just some light opera... (still from Carmen)
    3:35 plus the noises of sorting makeup
    5:50 this product leaves my eyeballs feeling filmy...
    6:09 anyone got a good daily moisturizer recommendation?
    6:46 Tiktok influenced me to put snail slime on my face...
    7:08 "influencer finger taps" don't really hit the same without the nails
    7:19 here's to not ordering on Amazon anymore
    7:53 but speaking of, this was an "Amazon must have"
    8:21 face base options...
    10:38 another stupid influenced purchase
    10:57 angry cat
    11:31 another Hannah-Louise-Poston influenced purchase
    12:12 my "everyday eye makeup"
    13:10 TikTok strikes AGAIN
    14:43 eyeshadow sticks that need to be decluttered
    15:21 brow products...influenced again for too many backups
    16:59 my favorite lip products, summer fridays, rhode
    18:22 I am also following Hannah Louise Poston's tinted lip balm quest
    19:06 setting a 3 month limit on my "to use" category
    19:27 I may be slightly addicted to resale apps
    22:01 Lilah B, influenced again
    23:50 keeping this powder prevents me from looking for others
    24:11 why do I have so many lip products?
    27:27 oooh camera flip!! lipsticks
    29:55 the wear test...
    30:14 I bought "Pillow talk" and it's really not a good shade on me
    31:23 trying on this YSL lipstick - on my face! do you think it suits me?
    32:31 influenced again, here's Gucci
    34:00 this is the point where I lost the Nars lip crayon under the table

    Cheering you on in your no buy. I used to follow HLP and she’s influenced me to buy a ton of stuff too (most of which I ended up not liking). Seeing you say the same really makes me think about how even “conscious” influencers like her cause so much over consumption. I’ve since unfollowed anyone who does reviews bc there’s no such thing as talking about objects for purchase and not encouraging consumption of said objects

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I actually recently did a roundup of EVERYTHING I was ever influenced to buy - which is going to be a marathon video...but it made me think about how with the things I was influenced to buy and did end up liking, I feel like it was just lucky whereas there's a lot of stuff I would never have heard about if not for the social media creator who showed me the product and therefore did not end up liking long term.
      I can get behind people doing reviews of things they already own, but as soon as they start either "buying things for review" or, perhaps worse, getting PR sent for free "for review", their motivations as a consumer become different because part of the acquiring is then for content and not for the pure use of the item.
      My final realization regarding HLP is that she began her TH-cam journey as I did, perhaps for accountability in a no buy year, not with any real expectation of being able to make it a full-time job...but then after the no buy, kept going, and for various reasons TH-cam became more lucrative and practical for her than her former businesses. And I think at the end of the day, social media will pay more for product-centric content, or to market to people who will likely buy some kind of product...so her having this as her full-time job kind of pushes her in the consumerism direction. I still watch her content but I now realize those differences between her life and mine (and only have strengthened resolve to never become consumerist here on this channel, as making $ is never going to be my primary purpose for posting).
      Sorry for the long response but thank you for your comment, which enabled me to think out loud a little further 😄

    Just a thought - the products you don't love... why keep them and force yourself to use them up especially since you already have products you do love in that same category? I get not wanting to waste money, but the money has been spent already regardless, and using something just because you have it when you don't like it and in most cases already own something else you do love that does the same thing - life is short, accept the loss and the lesson and use what you love. In my experience doing this - the feeling of allowing myself to reduce items and let things I didn't love go was much more satisfying and freeing than when i forced myself to finish things that i didn't enjoy using.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I get your point! I've kept the "things to use up" in their own separate box and as I dip into it, I'm having a kind of "second reckoning" with each item and in some cases this is the time that I realize I really don't want to use the item even just for 3 months, and in other (although fewer!) cases it does seem like keeping it is the better choice.

    It’s so interesting to go through the collection and see what you were influenced to buy. Makes me curious about what products I was influenced to buy from my own collection. I appreciate that you didn’t ruthlessly declutter things that are perfectly good and are trying to use things up

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you - and to your point, I think the "ruthless declutters" are probably more appropriate for people who either have accumulated even larger collections, or (as we see more and more these days), are "influencers" who get things for free as PR...because in my case here, I bought everything with my own $ and I did at least think I'd like it when I got it, and because things weren't free I also have more motivation to actually use things if I can!

    I'm in such an annoying cycle with make-up. I don't really use a lot day-to-day and what I do have is generally either from zero waste and cruelty free companies, or gifted. But every now and again (pretty much annually), I'll notice that my friends have a lot more than I do or one of my group chats will be going off about a new must-have product that I'd never heard of, and I'll end up feeling like I'm letting myself down in some way and should Make More Effort, so I buy a bunch of products, spend far too much, use them twice, and end up giving them away six months later. Rinse and repeat 😫
    Have been inspired by this video (and by something I read yesterday about plastic glitter in beauty products and how it's actually less damaging to chuck the whole thing away than to use it up and let all the horrible little bits into the environment - my friend gave me loads of glitter make-up a while back and I had fun playing with it for festivals and things but now I've got the ick about it) to have one last clear out, and then try not to do the same thing again... 🙈

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes! I think if it really is "the final declutter" (and we then avoid re-cluttering) then it's a really helpful thing to do. I love how you mentioned "Make More Effort" in proper capitals no less - I used to get that feeling too, like I "should" be doing something I'm not. Ironically now I live in a place where "making effort" makes one stick out a bit because few people around me tend to dress ostentatiously or wear "artistic" makeup at all, so I am currently experiencing the absence of "friends who have more" etc. - regardless perhaps we can think of each other here, as "friends who want to have reasonable collections no matter what our other friends may have or talk about" 🥰

  • @KatieManring

    I LOVE this type of video - thank you for doing this. I love seeing this as it encourages me to go through my collection. I also gently caution that “clean” ingredients are not always better or mean they are natural. some chemical ingredients are super helpful to keep your products free of contamination that are missing from some more natural products which can often cause early expiration of the products. So I would just be very cautious of expiration if you choose more natural products.

    I recently had to admit to myself that my naked 2 palette was over 10 years old, degrading and needed to be thrown away. It really was the 'claw it out of my cold dead hands' item. I have no desire for expensive eyeshadow now, I replaced it with an Elf palette.

      Glad I'm not the only one with the Naked palettes...it really is hard to part with and after so long it's almost sentimental, I was a different person back when I bought that one!
      I'm still working through the "expensive vs. drugstore" eyeshadow debate for myself, I've been telling myself maybe it's worth it if I do smaller more curated palettes...however it probably really isn't 😅 luckily I'm not buying anything this year so I won't make purchase mistakes!

I do think some of the challenges are that the colors I might not wear as lipstick are either very bold (the dark purple, dark green, the Gucci dark red) or perhaps not the kind of tone I usually go for on the cheeks (the more "neutral" like "pillow talk" that is very pink to me). OMG this one was hard to watch because I'm guilty of being influenced by makeup personalities on YT. I must confess, you got me influenced for a hot second with thouse viral lip glosses that u kept, I even google them lol. But, I'm staying strong to temptation for the sake of science lol. Anyway, I also had a big makeup stash (twice as big as yours, not that big in comparison with other people, but still) a few years ago. I decluttered because I was going traveling for a couple of year. Back to today, I have been trying to keep my stash in control but still have some palettes I couldn't throw away the first decluttering time and I'm guilty on purchasing recently some stuff I didn't have and want to try out.
    I must say, it's so hard to find cool products in travel size to try them out. I wish I could purchase everything in minis because I know I will not finish a highlighter or a lipstick, for example. That's the reason I went full size for the products I purchased recently.
    Can we talk about the concept of "supporting" our favorite creator by purchasing stuff? I don't want to judge anyone but I see that argument everytime we are influenced. Think about it: we are "supporting" a creator that makes thousands of dollars by only watching the video but still we think we need to support them financially. I have the feeling there's something underneath that thought.
    Great video, as always. Thanks so much!

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Haha what I will say about the lip glosses, is that if you already use and prefer the tube style lip gloss, they might make a good replacement product for what you use up. However if that's not your go-to preference for lip product you definitely do not need them!!! Love not buying for SCIENCE haha
      Also yes the trap of wanting to "support" a creator is real! And I'm committing to not falling for that one anymore...being on the "creator" side in this tiny way is also helping me to see that any time they recommend a product or take a sponsorship, it's a real choice and no one HAS to accept products or earn through advertising...I understand many set out with the goal of making "influencing" their primary income and job but it's all a choice. Maybe it says more about how other jobs in our society need to be better managed (maybe with 4 day workweeks, better benefits... etc.) so that "influencing" is not such an attractive career for the younger generations.
      Thank YOU for your thoughtful comment! 😊

    No shade to HLP, but I have been almost influenced to buy many things from her (did buy her book though), even though I'm not that into much makeup (skincare I am). Instead, I have been adding things I want to a list, originally so that I could buy them as replacements when I finish something. I always forget everything I put on the list when I check weeks later - even if I almost bought them at the time. Making a list and waiting always helps me.

      I also bought her book (not sure if I said in this video or not)...I'm a sucker for the idea of supporting someone's art and I do admire her love of words/poetry.
      Putting something on a "replacements list" is a good idea! Then you're at least forced to use something up before considering buying. 👍

    Another problem I see is: do we need every option? We always hear „yeah it’s nice having the option“ but is it really? I think it adds on decision fatigue and fantasy self problems.
    We don’t need every option in this moment. I declutterred my eyeshadows because of that as I like using them with my fingers, they’ll go bad faster that way and I won’t use every shade anyway.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear
      @Alexas.nobuyyear  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      100%! I totally agree and actually in my most recent video (as of writing this reply - things to consider before shopping) my first point is about how little it takes to have "excess" - as in, more than we can actually use or use up, too many choices....and finally now doing this no buy year I have realized that the best way to avoid this excess is to not buy in the first place rather than to declutter (in the future I mean, obviously this year I AM decluttering the excess in order to try and get better use out of what I have).
      I also use eyeshadows with my fingers, so that's a great thing to keep in mind, thank you!

    The eight lip products in your purse is so real! 😂 thats me, i love lip products even though they go bad, and i routinely declutter them before finishing them. I also recently did a declutter of old/expired makeup and replaced them with new products, so i shouldn't need new makeup for the next year or so with the exception of mascara/eyeliner. I do have some beauty products i plan to buy for myself for my birthday as a small splurge, but no more impulse beauty buys! I have stopped watching beauty youtube/tiktok, so i won't be influenced. Now i just need to work on my propensity to be influenced by skincare gurus lol i really enjoy k beauty and j beauty so i have a running list of things i can no longer buy until im done with what i have! I do have some old beautiful lipsticks on display for decor purposes because some i just couldn't bear to throw away even though i will never use them again.

    • @Alexas.nobuyyear

      Beauty and skincare are products I can definitely be influenced into wanting and buying and it is so hard to stay strong because they're often not super expensive, and feel like they have a use (especially skincare). Since not watching that content I've been MUCH less tempted, like you said! It's one of those things where I feel like mentally or logically, I think I should be able to watch fashion and beauty videos without wanting to buy stuff...but that's not how it actually works with how they make me feel and how I inevitably want what I see or want to try what people talk about loving.
      So for now I'm definitely still going to be careful with that kind of content. I think I'm going to see if some of my "luxury lipstick" containers can be used for bobby pins in my purse - we'll see if it works!
