Is Trying to Look "GOOD," a Style? | Trying to Find My Style Preferences (Episode 2)
Chatting about how I wear my clothes, during this year where I'm not buying any more of them (or trying not to!).
Maybe balancing "flattering" and "fun" IS my style. 🤔 And if you opened the description, I basically spoiled the whole video for you right there, sorry! 😆

This does show how the brand name affects people's opinion on the bag, I like how chanel can be roasted for it's craftmanship (wonky alignment on the front) and people still buy it 20x the price of polene, whereas polene is such an up and coming brand that people are losing interest once they fall back a bit on quality/price ratio.

I frequently find myself dressing in the "comfortable and fun" category more often than "looks good" these days. My style has really shifted these past few years from minimal to maximal, which is kinda funny bc I strive to be unnoticed and normal 😅 perhaps it was the pandemic, or ive spent too many hours watching the lord of the rings, but i dress like a hobbit art teacher/swamp witch/ Frankie (from grace and Frankie). But I'm a 34 year old in the capital of the conservative-business-casual fashion sphere, Washington DC 😂

There’s something radical, especially as a women, in wearing something that isn’t flattering. This is a great video, and a convo I have with myself all the time. I gained weight a few years ago and even more than ever have this convo/struggle. I LOVE fun things that are purposefully kitschy (aka not conventionally flattering), but some days I don’t have the self love (strength? something else?) to wear them. And maybe that’s ok. As humans, and as women, there are many times we can use dressing conventional (read: attractive) to our advantage. And I think it’s ok to deploy different strategies on different days. It’s an ongoing journey and such a big part of personal style.

Whether we really truly buy *nothing* or not, my spending habits have changed dramatically and I am totally focused on creating experiences with my loved ones over just buying more STUFF. I've also found that digitally cataloguing my wardrobe has been a real game changer. I'm finally actually wearing all of my clothes and having tons of fun creating new outfits every day. Anyway, enough ranting. Love and appreciate your channel <3

  • @fuchion15

So many great points to think about in this video! I will add a third dimension, there are outfits that appear to have intentions behind them and people who consistently wear outfits that appear to be intentional and regardless of where I fall on the spectrum of good fit and self expression, I want to be seen as someone who thought about what I’m wearing on any given day. Therefore, both good fit and interesting pieces are important to me. This means a couple of things: I’m super picky about what I bring into my wardrobe. I take care of what I own. I invest in altering my clothes so they better fit me. That being said, although there are some tells in the intentionality of how one dresses (again fit, state of clothing pieces, good structure, and good fabric are big tells), intentionality is arbitrary. It is way easier to come off as intentional when you’re skinny and attractive (doesn’t necessarily have to be conventionally so). An over sized t-shirt is a lot more likely to be viewed as an choice on a skinny college girl than it is on a woman who is older and larger. In other words, although I try my best to dress with intentionality, I don’t ever want to put too much stock behind how someone else dresses.

Great topic. Even a "basic" and "minimalist" style can still fail and look terrible. It could still feel contrived or overdone despite being a "simple" style. Also I think that a style could be elevated to "look good", and there are just good and bad ways to interpret a style. I see styles as genres, and if dressing up is a form of expression just like art and music, the outcome of the artwork will always depend on the artist and his/her skills.

Style is so complicated. I'm plus sized and I generally like to follow the trends because I like the challenge of translating current styles for my body. I am constantly wishing I could design and sew my own clothes because, I know what I want, and I can't always find it. I'm always more comfortable being "overdressed" for an occasion in order to disprove that old fat and sloppy stereotype.

  • @wang_xian

I am passionated by this topic! I am a soft summer and hourglass, and i only learned this last year because I was taught to "hide" my body, and wearing black made me feel safe and kind of protected, because it felt like I was less visible..I am very tall so as a kid and teen I strived to look smaller?less noticeable I guess, and it stayed. Until I discovered those concepts and learned how visual effects work. So now, I subscribe to the color season analysis I got and the advice the stylist gave me, so much. I love the muted colors and after trying them on, I do feel better than wearing black. i still have a few black pieces but I admit that I feel better wearing muted blue and dusty pink more than anything now. Definitely changed my perspective and taught me to learn how to wear colors that complement me and make me look less "red" Also discovering I have hourglass shape made me love my body so much more and not be as ashamed of the curves, contrary to what I'd been taught indirectly! I know what looks good and what emphasises what parts of the body but I dont agree with "ideal body shapes" as in i believe it's better to emphasise what is unique about us. Making proportions look more exaggerated and cartoon-like is the best.

It seems interesting in terms of determining your priorities to look into your actual picks for dressing up in concert black. Sure, it should be black and “appropriate”, but as far as I remember you have quite a wide range of options, from “plainer” ones, as it were, to more, say, statement and fun. And I’m pretty sure you also have some pieces and combos you consider more flattering than others. So, how do you tackle this balance of dimensions in practice, on a regular? (What made me think of your concert black is another dimension I notice in my own outfits, which is while I’m all for fun and bold self-expression, and I also care about looking good, I’m not always keen to draw attention to myself with clothes. Sometimes I really want to exist out there mostly unnoticed, or rather being noticed not for my looks, but for deeds. And part of it has to do with being 5’10 to begin with, which you do understand 😅)

I never thought of it this way. All I can say for now is that I am a big believer in the "wow" factor. I don't know if it is about style, color, comfort or fun, but when what I wear makes me say (or think) wow, I am sure that this is a good outfit for me. Sadly, I feel that I have too much clothes that are fitting me, that are good for my body, but that does not bring that "wow" ... something to work on!

I mostly keep in my colourseason which is true summer. I like that everything goes together. I have some black pieces like shoes out of practicality and some colourful pieces outside my palet because I love them. Flattery of bodytype I find very hard so I usually wear what feels comfortable and good even if I’m unsure whether it ‘flatters my bodytype’ which is short and curvy. I recognize the dilemma and choose based on how I feel that day. Thank you for bringing this up

I personally don't subscribe to colour season or body types at all. I know that black is not in my season but my wardrobe is all black because I'm just not comfortable wearing "true summer" colours. I like wearing outfits that completely obscure my curves and are very angular, even though I lean very hourglass. I've been down the rabbit holes of wanting to look "my best" so many times before, but it always ended up pushing me into a direction I wasn't entirely comfortable with. I didn't feel at home in my body when I conformed to what society deemed to look the best. Being comfortable in my body and in my clothes is my number 1 objective these days. This comes down to cuts, materials, silhouettes and cohesion.

In many ways, it’s hard to even try to wear something just “for fun” when I’ve been so conditioned all my life to “look good” - so in that sense, it’s hard to separate the two. I wish I could know who I am without the male gaze. Also, I must have a scarcity mindset with my clothing for some reason that I can’t figure out - but I buy beautiful clothing, for cheap prices secondhand, and yet don’t wear them, but instead wear the same crappy few outfits because I don’t want to “mess up” the nice clothing. I wish I could change this about myself, but it’s really hard.

I fell into the cycle of declutter, rehome, and rebuy because I just kept doing mass purges, and then buying stuff again because I either wanted something back or forgot why I didn't enjoy that piece. Since finding this channel, I noticed the discomfort I felt with the idea of keeping items until I was ready to rehome them, but now it has helped me a lot with curating my style and keeping clothing and trying to work with it further and only rehoming them when I knew for certain I wouldn't miss them or be drawn to rebuy them.

I have, and use daily, a Singer sewing machine from 1937, made before planned obsolescence. It's all metal parts that just need a bit of oil and a quick cleaning to work perfectly nearly forever and they can be serviced by me with just a flathead screwdriver and a TH-cam video. Sure it doesn't do fancy computerized stiches but it does a perfect straight stich every time even through leather for the last 90 years. Consider buying vintage if you want out of the trap of planned obsolescence.

*I BOUGHT A €140,000 Mercedes S Class coupe* when I was wealthy. The excitement and happiness lasted 3 months before I was p!ss3d off it was not a Bentley You see - they sell your details and Bentley had bought them and started sending me an insanely high quality 1cm thick glossy magazine, they type you DONT throw away, you collect. And it worked, I wanted a Bentley Arnage. NOTHING YOU EVER BUY WILL MAKE YOU MORE VALUABLE and the more you spend the better they get at MAKING YOU UNHAPPY...!!!

Purchasing products with DRM. Realizing that a lot of e-content is really just a loan that can be removed at the will of the seller and you have no recourse in the matter.

what’s your background about? I’m curious about the things on the shelves and how they relate to your channel/what you’re exploring. Thanks 🙂

All of these come down to the same common denominator: people who are insecure, succumb to these. Capitalism isn’t bad, it’s certainly far better than any other alternative - but people being so insecure that they have allowed themselves to be molded into hyper-consumers IS bad. People need to take responsibility for their role in being duped. I did. And acknowledging the problems was the first step in correcting it. That was 9 years ago, and my family is now debt free on a modest income. It’s all a choice.

Just found your channel as I start my official "no buy" year. I've been only replacing essential items that have worn out for more than a year. From here on I'll be consciously on a "no buy" journey.

(And I'm NOT "scrooging out" or skipping the holidays; I have many previously unfinished handmade items that I'm getting around to finally finishing in time for gifting. )

The yearly cell phone release is to make you buy the latest and greatest. Really, it's simply repackage bs. They also encourage shaming to get you to buy it.

Most recent purchase I regretted was a book. I went into Barnes & Noble INTENDING to get several, but I suckered myself into a pretty hardcover that I'm unlikely to actually read. And for full-price too. Ugh. Mostly it's nickel-and-dime stops at the grocery and hardware stores because I forgot something on the list or need 'just the one thing' for a project. I hate those stops.
