Some owners of Hyundai/Kia products are up in arms about oil - and not the price of it on the world’s markets. A cadre of eight people in America, ranging in location from California to Texas to Massachusetts, have brought forth a class-action lawsuit earlier this year alleging the engines in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles consume inordinate amounts of oil. At issue is the apparent need to add engine oil more frequently than the owner’s manual suggests, plus the allegation that some of the wayward oil finds its way into other parts of the vehicle’s gubbins to cause extra damage.
As per the suit, filed by Nye Stirling Hale And Miller; Sauder Schelkopf LLC and Walsh PLLC, plaintiffs contend the defendants “concealed and failed to address” a known manufacturing defect that results in excessive engine oil consumption and can lead to engine stalling and failure. Plaintiffs say that overfilling the engine with oil isn’t a good solution since the chance exists of submerging the crankshaft, a situation which could foam the oil and reduce lubrication. There’s also the issue of extra oil potentially putting undue strain on gaskets and the like.
Elsewhere in this neck of the woods, Hyundai recently expanded an existing recall by over 150,000 vehicles in Canada due to potential problems which could pose a fire risk or lead to the engine suddenly losing power. That defect could be linked to worn connecting rod bearings.
If you’re seeking for a text of the new class-action suit in its entirety, it can be found by searching Cho et al v. Hyundai Motor Company, Ltd. et al. or the clinically impersonal file name of 8:22-cv-00448.
There are a wide variety of Hyundai and Kia models named in the suit, some going back so far as 2009. According to the suit, cars with the allegedly faulty engines include:
    2012-2020 Hyundai Elantra
    2009-2018 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
    2019-2021 Hyundai Kona
    2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade

    2020-2021 Hyundai Venue
    2010-2021 Kia Forte
    2017-2020 Kia Niro
2011-2020 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid
    2012-2021 Kia Rio
    2011-2020 Kia Sorento

Sad world we live in that a dealership would choose to service your vehicle repeatedly and make tons of money yet not tell you about a recall the car had. Is this Russia, China or America? Hey man. I’m taking my car to BEK and masten tomball today. (I saw that’s who you have worked with) the oil light is started to turn on when I come to a stop. I had a service about a year or 2 ago and they said I didn’t need a new engine.
My engine has started shuttering very slightly recently. Hopefully today is smooth.

2015 elantra 1.8L 128K miles: had engine knock for the last ~1K miles; pulled the engine and tore it down. All of my cylinders and pistons were damaged from piston slap, no damage to rod/main bearings. No oil sludge, no debris in pan (I've been doing oil changes every 3500 miles since I bought this, half the time in my driveway though). It's obvious that this motor was assembled with the wrong piston to cylinder clearance; I can see hatching on the sides of the cylinders still (no wear at all) but the front and back of the cylinders/ pistons were ground down from the pistons rocking in the cylinder. This car has always had a slight "tick" but I guess I just got used to it and never thought anything of it. I'm glad I pulled this engine apart when I did, it was close to seizing up and throwing a rod through the block. Having my block machined and rebuilding the motor. I really don't trust the dealership to do these repairs and I don't want a sketchy new motor from Hyundai. Should be able to bore the block .020" oversized, replace the pistons and all bearings, have the head fully inspected/ rebuilt, then drive this car another 250k miles.

Thanks very much for the info. Our 2017 Kia Sportage is using excessive oil. There is a ping or knock unless we use higher octane gas. We are going to do the dealership for a bearing clearance test. If the test passes, does this mean we will no longer be covered for the extended lifetime warranty for the engine. Should we even get the test or just wait, keep putting in the oil and higher octane gas, and see if something happens to the engine? In other words, if it passes the test, does this mean the engine won't be covered if something happens to it down the road?

Hello Carl, thank you for the informative videos! I have had my engine in my kia 2015 soul replaced after a check engine light came on. However, I had to do an $700 to $800 "oil clean" before I could get it fixed. After they did the service, I was literally pulling away from the dealership and my engine blew. I was able to limp back the 100 yards. However, they tried to get me to pay for hoses, but I recently had then replaced else where and they could tell they were new. Question after all of this, I have had my engine mounts replaced like 4 times - this can't be normal right? I have 109,000 miles. I have also recently started hearing a knocking noise. Is this possibly related? Engine was replaced at 100,000 miles.

Dealership couldn’t find anything wrong at that time. Now just 2 weeks ago I had a check engine light come on which dealership replaced the KNOCK SENSOR as that is what the CODE READ. Now a week later another CODE CAME ON as P1326 which I will have towed tomorrow to the dealership. It’s been burning oil about every 500 miles since the mileage reached about 170,000 miles. It also has ongoing oil consumption that ive kept in check by adding oil regularly. The dealership did the ksds software update after I left the car off at the dealer. After diagnostics were run, the dealer is telling me that it needs a new catalytic converter and they're trying to wring me for $3200. What would you recommend as my next steps. Also, I can't seem to locate a Hyundai specific pamphlet. Will the KIA pamphlet suffice? Thanks for your time. I appreciate your honesty.

2014 KIA Soul engine blew about 5 miles after the software update. The car has been parked at the dealer since 2021 because it's too far away from our home to have it towed back. Dealer denied our claim even though the software had just been installed. We have a stack of maintenance records and the only time we went a little longer than usual for an oil change was because services were hard to find during the spring of 2020. Since the latest settlement has come down and we received the paperwork I've been back in touch with the dealership to have it fixed. We could not trade out of it, we could not afford the engine replacement, and we could not afford to have the car towed home. The closest dealership is more than 120 miles away. Our local Hyundai dealership refused to handle the original recall forcing us to go far away. Everything is still up in the air with it and we still owe money one it. This has been an absolute nightmare! Every time I see a Kia I want to leave a note on their car and warn them to prepare. I hope we're on the right track now, but this video makes me wonder. If they've stopped selling these cars in their own country of origin, how can we get them to stop selling them here??????????

Your catalytic converter likely was damaged by the additional oil burned in the combustion chamber due to the failed rings allowing oil to blow by and out your exhaust manifold, and subsequently into your catalytic converter. the Converter is designed to burn unused FUEL not additional OIL. This is absolutely a result of the ring issue.

I've now brought my 2014 Kia SOUL (134k miles) with a failed engine complaining about the SC176 recall damage. I ran the diagnostics on my own OBDII reader which had multiple codes including the P0420 cat code. The first Kia dealer updated the software and then told us that the engine was blown and that it had nothing to do with the recall. They then cleared all of the codes and told me that a remanufactured engine would be $6700. If I didn't want to pay for it I had 24 hours to get the car out of their parking lot. After I took the car back (towed home) the P0420 mysteriously never reappeared. I called another dealer and they agreed to look at it. When we had it towed there, the person at the desk said that the mileage in Kia's maintenance system did not match what's on the ODO. She said that someone had gone into Kia's system to 161000 miles - but she's looking at the ODO and it's 137k. She went into the Kia system and corrected it. She then told us that they would honor the recall but it would take months because there are so many of these to fix. I told them no problem and I bought my daughter another car so she could get to work. Five months later, the second dealer is now telling me that the problem is an injector and he wants to sell me one. I told him no, that it should be covered with the engine. What are my options?

Your story sounds like mine. The dealer claimed it wasn't giving the right codes (nothing in the recall notice about codes) even though our 2014 Soul engine blew right after leaving the dealership following the KSDS recall. We don't have the tools to check the codes ourselves and there are only a handful of Kia dealerships in our whole state so we've been in a holding pattern for 2yrs. and our car is still at the dealership. The dealership also said it would cost around 7k to replace the engine. We're still paying on this vehicle :(

@@melodyirish7254 I’m wondering what kind of disincentives KIA is exercising over the dealers to make them act this way.

Our Kia has started to burn oil. I’m adding in between oil changes done every 4000 miles instead of the 5000 intervals. Our Kia Rio EX 2015 has 105.130. I just left a Local Dealership in Van Nuys California as I got done HECU FUSE RECALL. I informed them about the consumption oil. I was told that as I’m out of warranty my car is not covered by the recall and that they charge $350 to diagnosed the reason of oil consumption. He told me to not pay $350:00 because I’m not cover
Sounds weird and fishy the response provided. I’m wondering about that update as Kia has never sent to my home any notice about the KSDS update (I imagine they don’t have to). If you can provide any assistance let me know. I will appreciate. This Kia is my wife’s car and I was bought used in 2017. So far it has been a very good car. Regular maintenance and no breakdowns.

And can you please guide me before I going to buy 2016 kia optima ex 2.4 L driven 220000 km in 6 and half years, still there no recall in history, it's looks like totally new, price is also good with to year transmission warranty. One owner, dealer said we give car seafty certificate, like engine oil, breaks etc.
    I love this car.
Bro what you suggest should I buy or not.
And what's the age of this car remaining.
    Thanks.

All kia's from 09 - 2023 have recalls. Regardless of what it says online. You check recalls at the dealership, not online. My advice is dont buy it.

My 2012 Kia Optima Engine was blown on the highway. When I towed the car to the nearest car shop, I was told the engine needed to be replaced and I was also told by the mechanic that the engine might be covered under recall. He called the Kia dealer for me and now my car is in Kia dealer. I'm waiting for them to finish the diagnosis of my car and get back to me. Hope they replace the engine.

Had my car shaking on the highway and engine light on. Took it to autozone, it read cylinder 2 is misfiring, which lead me to take it to the dealership. Kia Dealership is saying it is a burnt valve and does not pertain to the warranty or lawsuit and therefore I dont qualify for an engine replacement. They are requesting a new engine be put in because just replacing the valve is not a guarantee. HAHAAH, IS THIS NOT ENGINE FAILURE OR NOT? LOL

Wow that’s bullshit, wasn’t that damaged by the engine recall? My car is doing the same misfiring they say it’s the sparks plugs. Although spark plugs have been changed Andre weeks ago.

1... i dont own it anymore. I have a Lexus RX350. 2! I was the 2nd owner not the 3rd. 3! I had the ksds from Beck and Masten Kia so I was covered if my cars engine did go out but because they can only replace it when it goes out (which can only happen while driving), I got rid of it before that could happen.
