    I think my brain slightly melted when you did that sleeve hemming technique! I mean, the details on this whole make are amazing! And it shows in the final coat! And thanks for mentioning the needle you used- that kind of info is so helpful!

      Haha that sleeve trick is so satisfying! Every time I do it I think "it's not gonna work..." and then it just works! And I am trying to be better about sharing the details about my supplies, so I am glad that is helpful! Thanks so much!

    Love this design, the proportions and the flat fell seams. Really love it. And you solved a mystery for me. For 30 years I have wondered how manufacturers sew the sleeve hem lining to the outer fabric without hand stitching! Thanks for showing us your clever technique. I expect there is a way to machine stitch the lining to the back pleat and still machine the bottom hem lining to the outer fabric as well. The fabric looks great but I can see that stretch twill is challenging to top stitch without creating waviness. I wonder if iron-on stay tape along the seams would solve the issue.

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I learned that sleeve trick from Closet Core patterns Clare Coat. So smart! And I need to figure out how to machine stitch the back flap/pleat, because I tried it and had to unpick it haha (I cut it out of the video because it was getting too long 😄) But I did notice on the corduroy jacket that I copied, the back flap was also handstitched. So might be a good mystery to try to solve! I agree, I think that some stay tape might be a good solution to combat the waviness in the topstitched areas.

    You're very fortunate to even have a too-low table. I cut on the floor, sometimes on my knees, sometimes sitting cross-legged! Yes, it totally hurts my back, my hips, and I got little rug burns on my knees. 😂 Send your little table to my house! 😂

    I love this coat. I've always wanted a trench coat but was put off with all the fussy details, storm flaps, epaulettes, belts, rows of buttons etc. They always looked far too complicated to attempt sewing. This coat is fabulous in it's simplicity, I can't tell you how much this has inspired me. I was enthralled watching you make it, from making the pattern, the muslin and the beautiful precision of the finishing. My perfect coat. Thank you for showing this.

    For those types of materials, you can use seam ribbon (binding) to keep the seams from having that wave to them. It gives the material a little more structure. What a beautiful piece though, makes me want a soft coat too!

  • @SadieSews
    @SadieSews ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The coat is beautiful and inspiring. I just bought some boiled wool at the sewing expo in Novi today so I need this inspiration.
    About the table….I use a ping pong table for my cutting/work surface and I use bed risers to lift it up to kitchen counter height (36”). I’ve never had a sore back after working. There are many choices on Amazon, of course. The bed risers work well because they have a recess that the legs fit into, making the table less likely to slip off if you lean on it a bit.

    • @PatternScout
      @PatternScout  ปีที่แล้ว

    Congratulations on the coat finishing and design! Lots of work but worth it. I recently upgraded my sewing/cutting table to a 30x60 “standing desk” that I can easily raise and lower with the press of a button for whatever task I am doing. I am very happy with table but would be careful to note how heavy it can be depending on materials used for construction. Worth considering though. Thanks for the videos.

    Hi, this was so educational, so many “aha” moments. I feel like I could tackle this now. I love your style of videos, so relaxing to watch. As far as your table goes, no shame! No one should be so pushy. Since you said you were now re-thinking your cutting table, I thought I would now recommend mine. I purchased this electric desk for my cutting/sewing table. I have an extremely small sewing room, so absolutely no room for a separate cutting table and sewing table. After a lot of research and a trip to IKEA to check what they had, I happened to catch a video from another sewist on TH-cam recommending this desk (not from ikea). I am simply in love with it. Worth every penny. I’ve had it for over a year and I continuously say to my husband, have I mentioned how much I love this table (again as I chuckle). You will not be sorry. I believe they come in a few sizes. Good luck with your research. I must say having a higher cutting table was a game changer for me. I had someone make a frame out of angle iron, then got a thick piece of ply wood cut which dropped into the frame, it has a shelf as well. Absolutely brilliant table. Cost very little too 😀 Now I need your cutting mat 😁

      Ooh that sounds so nice! I am realizing that a higher cutting table is a must! Closet Core patterns has a cutting table DIY on their blog that I was also eyeing that looks great! And my cutting mat is from JoAnn Fabrics...it fits my 3x5 table perfectly!

    Beautiful, beautiful coat. Wear it with pride! I don't know what you have planned for your cutting table, but, have you checked out table leg extensions at Amazon? That's what I did for my cutting /storage table and it worked out well.

    I really appreciate you showing how you stitched around the lapel and collar. I would love to make myself a coat but the whole collar/ lapel bit absolute terrifies me. You’ve taken some of the mystery out of it though and I may actually give it a try. Will definitely toile first though 😬😀

    But if you think the murdaugh case is crazy look into the Pinkerton/Wagner family/Rodan family massacre in Ohio. Watch the Law & crime TH-cam channel to follow along with the court case and get daily updates from Gigi on "pretty lies & alibies" podcast and TH-cam channel. It will only take once to know. Take care of yourself and your body. We want you around for a long time.
