Hello Brisa, I am presently about to commence with my writing sample for grad school and I cannot thank you enough for breaking down how to go about it so simply. To be honest it has taken me almost 3 weeks trying to figure out how to write the sample, given the 10-20 pages specification. Thank you. I simply nodded my head yes throughout the entire video. Whoop! Break it down girrrl!! Here's a tip from my writing experience... Yes, I had to learn the hard way... TURN OFF THE SWIPE MODE ON MY PHONE KEYBOARD. Not only will it not recognize sentence sense or misspelled words or grammar; it will take words and make other words with that original word. Also, proof read continuously out loud and have the support team do the same.

This is exaaactly what I needed right now. Thank you so much for uploading! I've been thinking a lot about my writing sample lately and stressing myself out... I'm hoping to have students respond to a survey at the university I work at and then create a research paper based on the data, but it's been feeling extremely overwhelming haha. I'm so glad to know that other options are totally acceptable just in case I'm not able to complete the research project in time.

Hello. Thank you for the video. I wanted to ask if I can submit my graduation project's proposal with all the abstract and the name of the university or should I reform it as an essay.
Hi! Thank you for taking the time out to comment. Hmmm I would say... it depends on the program. If you are applying to a more research based program you may want to submit a small portion of the actual reserach you did versus the proposal. But if you are applying to a program that is more professional based the proposal may be great! I would actually suggest you reach out to the program or one of the advisors directly and ask if they have a preference! That way you submit exactly what they want!
Good 👍 content. I'd like to know, I took a gap year to get work experience from 2017 to now and I do not have any publications yet so I'd like to know how if I have to publish a paper or papers just to boost my chances of admission?
In the US context it is not required or very common for people to apply to PhDs with publications. In fact I am a 4th year PhD at UCLA and i just submitted my first publication submission two weeks ago! So If I were you I wouldn't worry much about it at all!

Hi Dear! Your video is very helpful. My Masters thesis is not of a good quality so I m writing a new document as a writing sample. But I don't know which contents should it have? Are Abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, discussion & conclusion respectively make a good writing sample? Please help

So it all depends on the program you are applying to. You can alway reach out to them directly and ask what they look for in a writing sample!
From my experience the most important thing is just to make sure you are demonstrating your analytical skills if you are applying to a PhD ... Most writing samples are rather short, 15-20 pages. So I would focus mostly on the the discussion and conclusion but if you can fit the intro, lit review, and methodology in the page limits do it! But again make sure you ask the school first to see what they are looking for!
Hello Brisa, please i would like to ask what part of my undergraduate thesis i should cut off to make a 20 page writing sample. my undergraduate thesis is 56 pages long.
Hmmm That is a great question, but unfortunately I really can't tell you. Because it is not as easy as remove this or that. It really is what part do you think shows your BEST writing skills that are relevant to the degree you want!
Can I submit my Master's research proposal as a writing sample? Though I have already completed my Master's thesis.
HI! Sooo Instead of submitting your proposal, I would actually submit a part of your masters thesis instead. This way they can see your actual analytical skills and have a chance to learn more about your research. This type of writing is more in line with what reearch degrees are looking for. But just make sure you are following their requirements strictly! I hope that's helpful!

It really depends on the program you are applying too. Most PhD programs are going to want to see you engage with analysis . If you are applying to professional degrees an internship report may be great! I would encourage you to reach out to the program you are interested in and see what they say!

Do all grads as a writing sample?
Hi! No, all grad applications do not require. Actually many don't especially if you are in a STEM or pursuing a professional degree. Usually you can see what each school requires on their website! but again, many applications do not require a writing sample, but most research programs do! I hope that helps :D
Does a writing sample need table of contents and referencing?
Not necessarily! I would default to what your application is requesting.l regarding fornat. However if it doesn't specify I wouldn't worry so much about formatting. As long as it's a well written document. Though if you are citing others you want to make sure you do it properly as to not plagiarize!

Honestly! It really depends on each program. What is most important if you are applying to a phd is that it's a good research/analytical document... hmmm but I could make. A video sharing my writing sample!!! Maybe seeing an example can help relieve some stress. But generally grad schools don't care about formatting as long as it is well written and shows your ability to write well!

hi! I always think its best to look at the directions of the application and see what they specify or look for. But a research paper can be a great writing sample. I submitted a research paper for my PhD application! but remember make sure you look at the guidelines of your application before anything else!
