    If you are like me, you may need strategies for how to read in grad school. This video for Distracted & Slow Readers who want strategies especially for slow readers in Grad School
    Hello everyone! Today's video was specially requested and I am so excited to share! I have never been a strong reader, and even worse I never really enjoyed it either. As a result, I have had to develop and find a bunch of strategies to help me succeed in my grad programs. While it may be a little harder to go to grad school as a slow reader or as someone easily distracted, it doesn't necessarily mean we can’t do it! I hope this video helps you and anyone you know learn some strategies to approach how to read for grad school!

    I struggle with walls of text and use Apple’s Spoken Content feature loads - whether it’s a webpage, eBook or PDF. On my laptop I’ll often use Google Chrome’s Speech feature (select text, right click, Speech > Start Speaking) to read out paragraphs from a webpage. It’s amazing. I particularly like it for ebooks because it means I can effectively turn any ebook into an audiobook - the voice is obviously not as natural as a voice actor but it works well for me.
    I love the other tips too - I am definitely a slow and distractible reader, and I’m about to start grad school after being out of formal education for 15 years (and not reading most of the books for the literature classes of my French undergrad).
    New follow!

    Hey, so I’m a first semester grad student on the spectrum. B/c of my disability, it naturally takes me longer to absorb information than my NT peers, and it’s more work for me than it is for them.
    I’d be lying if I didn’t say the amount of reading I have to do now was overwhelming me.
    So thanks, this video really helped me put things in perspective and these strategies will make things more manageable for me going forward.
    Also, I’m so glad you weren’t just like “now you have to think criticality instead of remembering a list of facts”. I know that. I was already thinking critically in undergrad, and that doesn’t explain how grad school differs from undergrad specifically within higher ed 😂

    Keep in mind the stats Google gives are likely based on reading something more like a novel than a research article. I doubt you’re as “below average” than that stat makes it seem when you account for the difference in content.

      @@BrisaMarie I googled it, and it is about 11 pages. I can only read 10-15 pages in an hour, so that article I read made me feel better about my reading. I actually love to read, but read textbooks at a much slower pace in order to truly grasp the material.

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's amazing!!! And of course makes sense... as Shelly also said above the more academic the writer the more time it may take!! It really depends on your study habits and degree. In general I don't do a lot of work for school on a daily basis because my degrees don't have many assignments... we do have a lot of readings but I can usually get to them in two or three days out of the week. I am a non-traditional grad student in every way (age, path, ability, and the origin of country) and have struggled a lot after getting into the grad program that I love. Thank you so much for this! this was super helpful. Do you have any tips on how to read through chapters quicker when its last minute? Because i'm super behind in my readings and I cant really take time at this moment until I catch up. I think you mentioned reading the intro, conclusion and somewhere in the middle. Has that been helpful?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi! Yes!! For me it has been helpful to read the intro, conclusion and then bits of the middle that seem most important/useful. And usually you can get the gist of where to read in the middle based off what was said in both the intro and conclusion. I think too, it may be helpful to just reframe what you think is behind... or that you are behind on your readings at all... Now I am not sure of the details of your program and/or your classes so this is just general advice based SOLELY on my experiences, BUT I have come to realize that some readings i just never get to and that is ok. Meaning if your program is mostly written assignements that don't require in depth explanation of each readings, if you haven't got to some of them yet and you feel like you stil are able to understand/participate in your program fully... then.... you may never need to read them and then techincally you are not behind. Again I am not sure if that is helpful advice at all since you might very well have a very specific program that tests on all the readings and then in that case I totally would catch up via reading those previous mention sections, reading literature reviews online, or asking students further along for any notes that they may be okay with sharing... but if its not like that ... sometimes it is totally ok to cut your loses and keep moving. So yes that was a long way to say if you are really behind you can:
      Read the intro, conclusion, and a middle section
      Read literature reviews/Watch youtube videos instead of doing the entire readings
      Ask people who already read it for notes or a summary
      OR
      Not do them at all.
      Which may not seem like the most studious advice, but it can help make things more manageable and help you move toward the real reason you are there and thats to do your research!!

    Hello Brisa!
    My name is Sara and as of current time I am a senior undergraduate student but am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs for my field of study. As of now a majority of my friends and classmates are in one of the graduate programs i'm applying to and have told me that for each of thier classes they are assigned about 2-3 chapters per class that are typically around 30 pages each, but the chapter's assigned depend on the class. In my undergraduate I have never really read long texts like this and majority of my professors said that the powerpoints they created to show during lectures covered the material in the book so it wasn't necessary to read but to just take notes during. I have ADHD and anxiety and typically don't read very fast like you but I am worried about being able to find key information within the text and knowing what information I need and don't along with being able to complete each assigned readings every week. I know graduate school is still well over a year away for me and I haven't even applied yet but I am very nervous.

      It really depends on your grad degree, but if you are pursuing a research degree I will say GENERALLY in grad school there is no "right" or even "key information" because grad school is about what is useful to YOU and YOUR RESEARCH! IF you are entering into a professional degree, the best advice that would help no matter what is to make friends/network with people further in the program and ask for their guidance and support. This way you have people who have been through these introductory courses as mentors or a support system to help guide you to the "key information" ALSO, again it depends on your university, but just like in undergrad grad school often has special program for people with specific academic needs. At UCLA we call it the Center for Accessible Education (CAE) but these programs helps students with all types of needs which includes people with ADHD and this way they will provide you the proper accommodations for you to succeed!! You usually just have to find that department within the first week of classes and go through their process to be put in the system and they will have their own process to make sure you have the support you need to succeed! You can succeed at grad school and I can tell by the fact that you are watching youtubers you are a solution oriented person! That is a great sign and skill to a successful student! Just try and build you resources and support system to help you! It's only naturally to be nervous, but you can do it!!!

    Dear Brisa…I also struggle to read 40 pages a day especially with taking notes… but in grad school I get assigned about 7 texts a week per class each text averaging 50-60 pages… I can’t afford to go as slowly as this video suggests or I simply won’t be prepared… are you assigned less or do you just select readings? If so, how do you manage to choose which readings to focus on?

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi! Sara! It is soooo true, we are in fact assigned often WAYY too many reading to do i a given week. I do exactly what you suggest and Pick and choose... I talk about it in this video around the time marker 12:22 min but essentially there are two methods to picking and choosing... On one hand you don't read the entire text but rather the most important parts (which is usually the introduction, a chapter in the middle and the conclusion) this way you are able to get the arch of the main argument and still participate in class. The second method is being selective with the readings you read, but this works best if you know what type of profession/class you are working with really well and are comfortable with not participating in EVERY discussion in class. I also talk about a sort of "divide and conquer" type method lol its around the 10:27 min mark in this video, but also building relationship and developing reading groups can help tackle the "extra" readings. It is definitely not easy! And what works for me may not work for you! But this is how I handle when my readings are more than I can complete in a week! Thank you for commenting!!

    For me, getting through the readings is not the issue. I don’t know how to take notes on said readings. I end up highlighting the articles and feeling a little lost and overwhelmed by the end.

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is sooo relatable! It is always a lot of information PACKED into our readings and it is very easy to find yourself wanted to highlight and memorize everything!!!
      I do have a video that talks about how I try to narrow down what I am pulling out of a reading. Maybe it can be useful to you to!

    Do you have suggestions/ thoughts about physical vs digital textbooks in grad school? I was recently accepted into a phd program and I was leaning toward digital for searchability, easily carrying all my materials, and the notes and highlighting flexibility.

      @BrisaMarie  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      CONGRATS ON YOUR ACCEPTANCE! THAT HUGE!
      I think picking what works best for you... will be what works best for you! As long as they have the same information I think the digital vs physical is just about preference. I prefer digital for the reasons you explain aboved...until my eyes hurt lol then I prefer physical hahaha but I don't think there is anything wrong with a digital book at all!

    Do you have any tips to not get so overwhelmed with the amount of readings? I get done and then I see that I need to read 10 more things😭

    • @BrisaMarie
      @BrisaMarie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally understand that feeling!! While there is not guaranteed solution to this problem, it helps me to give myself perspective.
      Like you can't know everything about EVERYTHING, so its okay if you don't get to everything
      You don't have to talk EVERY time to be a good student
      Trying your hardest is the best ANYONE can ask for and it is ENOUGH
      I am sure there are some grad students out there that can read everyting and do all the assignemtns and be the "perfect" student... but I am just not like that ... and grad school isn't just for the PERFECT student. However, it is for the students who are hardworking, passionate and genuine... and I am sure you are all three! SO yeah I would just remind yourself you don't have to be perfect to do well ... and that you will read what you are able to and doing you best is enough... lol
      I know that might not sound all that useful and I am sorry, but it is genuinely how I approach it... and so far so good lol

      @@BrisaMarie thank you so much for this. I just started my grad program and just spent the last two hours reading only to feel like a complete failure when I realized how little I had made it through and how much I still had to go. Hearing that grad school is not just for the students who can do all the things, read all the things, etc was a very needed reminder.

      I am so happy that i helped in any way!!! Lol... honestly It's so easy to feel overworked and overwhelmed but if we just kindly remind ourselves why we are doing this and that grad school is about our learning and NOT proving we are smart it can make the process so much more... realistic!

    It would take me hours to read 20 pages, especially when my brain is refusing to focus. I normally manage 10 to 20 pages per day and 30 to 40 on very rare occasions when I'm reading at gunpoint. I suspect I'm neurodivergent, since if I could focus and read, I can fly through many pages but that rarely, rarely happens.

    i really really LOVE your content and really appreciate you empathic approach for succeeding in grad school!! i was so happy the first thing you mentioned was how it took you an hour to read 20 pages and I'm just like girl me too 🥲 i'm really curious to find out studies/research projects and their demographics of folks who are able to manage reading 40+ an hour because I would imagine its a far different experience for folks with less educational resources, financial stability, and mental support. anyways, thank you for easing my anxieties as I begin my grad school journey this fall!!

      FIRST!! CONGRATS ON STARTING GRAD SCHOOL! Second, Thank you so much for your kind affirmation! You have no idea how much that means to me! Reading and even writing... HECK all of grad school can be challenging but I also think if we are honest about it we can feel less alone. You know? SO I am happy you said me too, cuz I used to feel so alone in my reading speed! I do think there probably is connection between all of those things you mentioned and ones reading speed, but also everything else related to academic! I really hope this channel can help people in any/all of those categories at the very least feel a little bit more at easy with the grad school process. Thank you again so much for your comment. It was really nice to read! Please let me know if you have any grad school questions or if you wanna give updates on your grad school process!!
