  • What's up, guys! In this video, I share with you the writing sample I submitted with my application for the Education Studies PhD program at the University of California San Diego. In your writing sample, for graduate school, you should be submitting a document that showcases not only your strengths in writing, but also that you could contribute to your field of study. Your writing sample should also showcase your research skills or potential to conduct high quality research, your ability to be an innovator, and your passion for your field of study.

      It all depends on the type of program you are applying to. My program valued research to practice and so I showcased that in the writing sample. If the program you are applying to is strongly focused on the research process then I suggest that you submit a formal research paper for your writing sample.

    Hi Ivan, thank you for such informative material. I'm wondering why a writing sample should be an existant material? I actually have a mater's thesis, but I feel the methods in the paper is not very strong...I am applying to psychology PhD, I have two choices, either submit my publication of undergraduate thesis (which I wrote 4 years ago and not too related to psychology, but is clean writing and already there), or work on enriching my master's thesis (which is more recent and more related to the field, but I'm not confident about the method I used). Which one would you suggest me to use? Thank you!

    • @IvanValdovinosGradSchool

      Hi I would go with the undergraduate thesis because it shows a better representation of your command of the research process and a PhD is a research degree. They don’t expect you to know everything about psychology they want to know that you can conduct high quality research.

    Good day bro,
    I am currently preparing an application for a doctorate program, and I came across some of your videos which have been very helpful so far. Thanks for your amazing work.
    However, I need you to clarify the following:
    1. Do I need to submit a reference page as part of my writing sample (I mean the references of the in-text citations that are contained in the main body of my writing sample)?
    2. I intend to submit my current MSc dissertation, however, is it necessary that I include the project topic, aim of the study, objective of the study, research questions, problem statement, and methodology of the research while submitting the writing sample?
    or should I just submit only the main body and relevant part of the research work and exclude the above parts?

    • @IvanValdovinosGradSchool
      @IvanValdovinosGradSchool  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What’s up bro! You do not need to submit your reference list if it does not fall within the page limits. In terms of your second question, you want to make sure the pieces that you submit can stand alone meaning that it will make sense to the reader by itself. From what you have written, I don’t think that would be the case without all the pieces of the research. I would say to either condense your entire thesis to meet the page requirements and include all parts or submit the literature review portion which can stand alone in almost all cases.

    Hey Ivan, this video was awesome! I'm getting ready to apply for masters programs in the fall. My problem with a writing sample is that I don't have any research experience (I'm looking for a more course-based/applied program, so research isn't a huge focus). I'm worried that a writing sample has to be research backed or the conclusion of your research. I have some final papers that I can edit and expand on, but these are really from prompts. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

    • @IvanValdovinosGradSchool
      @IvanValdovinosGradSchool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, your writing sample does not need to be research focused. Your goal as an applicant should be to showcase your strong writing skills by submitting a paper that has a clear argument. Your essay should use scholarly articles to back up the thesis or argument of your essay. The writing sample presented in this video is not research based. It is actually practical in nature, but utilizes scholarly articles to showcase the need for Latino father involvement in middle school. This essay was a final essay I submitted for a course I took while in my Masters program at Harvard.

      It depends. If there is no page or word limit then submit the entire thing. If there are parameters, then you should consider submitting your strongest pieces of the work. If that is the lit review then submit the lit review. You also need to identify what the program values. If they value methods, then submit the methods section. Good luck!

    Very informative and helpful video for a prospective student like me. I have a question regarding a very typical situation and would appreciate your opinion/feedback on it.
    I'm on the verge of completing my master's degree in Finance from University of Michigan and am looking to apply for a PhD in Sociology in the upcoming months. Although I didn't study Sociology in my undergrad or grad school as an entire program, I did however take a Sociology course during my BBA days and have a 6-paged term paper and a 2-paged essay from that class (both of a similar sub-topic). You mentioned in your video about NOT writing an entirely NEW paper just for the writing sample... but given that I don't any 10-20 paged paper on Sociology, would it be okay if I were to combine the two existing pieces of work I have from my Sociology class and modify them to have them relate to each other and have a smooth transition... essentially becoming a SINGLE written piece? Please guide.

    • @IvanValdovinosGradSchool

      For a writing sample, you shouldn’t be writing anything. It should be a final essay you wrote for your undergraduate course or a publication. Submit an analysis that you did well on and that was graded by a professor. The writing sample doesn’t have to be “Sophisticated.” The goal is to show your writing skills, your critical thinking skills, and your ability to add to the existing literature in your field.

A writing sample should not be a research proposal. It should be a piece of writing that was either graded by a professor or submitted for publication. The example I shared was a final paper that I submitted for one of my masters courses and it is not what I am currently working on for my PhD research.

Graduate programs are not necessarily interested in if the content matches the PhD program focus. They want to know if you have a command of the research process and if you could write high quality research. However, having a writing sample in the field you want to get into could also help if it’s well written. Will the new piece be completed before your submit your application? If so, will you have faculty give you feedback before submission? If the answer is not to both then I would choose something that has been reviewed by scholars. I hope this helps. Good luck!
