Nikon Coolpix P1000 vs Panasonic Lumix FZ1000...wait!! what happened????

  • Unlike most TH-cam camera reviews this one went sideways in a hurry. I swear I wanted the P1000 to be fantastic..but a true scientific creative review process showed this may be Nikon's biggest turkey ever. What should be an amazing camera is in fact shackled by bad ergonomics (weighs a ton, tripod mount in wrong spot), poor menu (few settings, a spelling mistake! and never returns to where you left it) , inadequate sensor, (once you've tasted a 1" sensor, hard to go back to a weany 1/2.3") appalling remote app (not even a video record button assuming you've been lucky enough to connect) and marginal full zoom performance (soft, and only f8 yikes,,, better have LOTS of light). Watch those other enthusiastic youtube raves and then this review. I can't believe many don't mention this stuff, they are so in love with the mega zoom. Pictures of the moon...really? How many do you need of those? I bought this camera, and, a first for me, I'm returning it. Find out why. Maybe I'll save you money... Spoiler: if you want to know my recommendation and not watch the whole video just go to 2 minutes 10 seconds...

    As an owner and user of the P1000, you make a lot of valid points. However, this is not a daily shooter. I just got back from Alaska, and while I primarily used a D850 with 150-600 G2, there were some opportunities where an eagle was sitting in a distant tree, a mountain goat climbing up a distant mountain, a sea otter in the distant surf, or a little white weasel on the shore line, were so far away that the P1000 at 800mm to 2500mm was the only way to get a decent image. It still bothers me that I wasn't able to get decent wolf images in Yellowstone some years ago because I simply didn't have enough lens. That's what the P1000 is for.

      Great lens/camera for the right purpose, just shouldn’t be considered a general point and shoot bridge, which is kind of how its designed and marketed. For video really needs to be tripod mounted which limits its portability. Try birdwatching or casual street shooting with a 3 pound weight in your hands. Gets tough real fast. Some of its issues are software, the menu and SnapBridge in particular, so if Nikon continues to backthis model it may get fixed. I’ll likely buy one second hand in a few months, its a real niche treasure, just not a replacement for a good bridge like the FZ1000. Thanks for commenting though.

    I love my Nikon P1000 and I’ve taken thousands of photos of the moon and learned a lot. also ordered the P950 it has the exact same features just half the size and 2000mm this will be my daily shooter when I go on hikes. truth is the P1000 is heavy on a seven mile walk, especially if I don’t shoot anything that day...thanks for your opinions.

    when does a photographer worry about weight of equipment to capture the moment, I used to haul around a panasonic 3 tube camera, wooden tripod rated for 50lb plus video head, then a 3/4in tape recorder on one hip, plus a motorcycle battery on my other hip, getting off ski hills chair lifts, jumping out of helicopters, filming hanging out of helicopters, snow mobiles. young folk you don't have the experience of video or photography in our history, all you want is an iphone with good quality but terrible control of light, motion, composition, ive been using cameras since 1956

    I have the Nikon P1000 and I share some of the critique but I can get pretty decent pictures at 3000mm. Were you using a lensfilter on the P1000? Some pictures, especially the bird picture, look like it's shot through a window, the distortion looks more than just out of focus. If not, it might be a quality control issue.

    We're headed to Alaska (with a stop in Victoria BC) in late May (possibly on that or similar Eurodam ship you show about the 7:36 time frame). Really looking forward to this trip and want a longer zoom camera, but without lugging along SLR and lenses. I've watched both this video and your comparison to the FZ80. Thanks for both of these reviews (well done), as it helped me make a decision about super zoom choice (going with the FZ1000).
    Any advice about shooting Glaciers, outdoor scenery, etc. with the FZ1000?, And I know it was asked on previous video, what about protecting this from the elements (seems like a big camera to try and tuck under a rain coat)

    • @NorthOlbo
      @NorthOlbo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment, FZ1000 is a safe bet for sure, hard to beat that 1" sensor. My feeling about "stills" versus video sets how I use the FZ1000. If I see something I know I'll be making photos and editing in Photoshop (or equivalent) I use RAW and JPEG (fine setting) to allow full shadow detail. Otherwise I underexpose to keep highlights down and try to pull up the shadows later, not the easiest to do. Make sure you have your "zebra" warning set to flag overexposed areas which will let you underexpose and keep bright areas from blowing out. FZ1000 does this well. But...normally I do video and leave it at 4K 24 fps. It's amazing how much I use this for photos later. Especially people shots, where as they assemble for a picture the spontaneity and fun can be pulled out frame by frame later, much more interesting, than saying cheese and snapping an ugly shot. And that frame is 8MP, which gives pretty good quality to edit later too! Action shots too, there is almost NOTHING which isn't better shot in video, then examined frame by frame later to make great photos. I leave my camera in 4K video all the time. It takes up memory cards, but they are so cheap now, and I throw most of it out after. The other thing about video: a great photo has structure, composition, elements within the frame shouldn't overlap or interfere with each other, and be few and simple. As you grab those interesting videos you may not have time or opportunity to do all that, a calving glacier, a bear wandering down an Alaskan beach, a busker in Victoria. Start the video, THEN think about framing, elements, composition. I guarantee, when you examine that video one frame at a time later ONE fantastic image will pop out, it would have been a miracle to have timed it that way by just snapping a few photos. Try it! Yeah, keep that camera under your coat until you start shooting, but go for it. They are pretty tough, keep a cloth handy to wipe it off immediately. And have a great trip!

    Actually I like photographing the moon as it always changes. I have never found it heavy to carry. I sit my P1000 on a gimbal and it balances the weight nicely. I have photographed in day and night conditions and was happy with both. I also have a P^ mirrorless and a D7500 so I can compare them fairly. In short, I am perfectly happy with the Nikon P1000.

    @littlebennie3196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I agree. I have the fz1000 and just got the Coolpix p1000 and like the fz1000 much more. However I live on a hill and most of the shots that I like to take our long-distance down the hill some distance to the ocean and the fz1000 can't compete in that regard. For most people I think the fz1000 is a better choice but if you need that longer shot even if it will be a little fuzzy out at 3000 mm, the Coolpix p1000 is a good choice, albeit kind of expensive. I also have a Coolpix p 900 and it's much easier to handle, but in the long run the p1000 reaches out and takes a better picture. So it is kind of an expensive toy just to get those long zoomed-in shots and as a general camera, the fz1000 is certainly a better camera. But for me, I need the p1000 to get those long zoomed-in shots of fishing boats and the whales in the ocean from a long distance away on the hill above.

    • @ralphpeteranderl4063
      @ralphpeteranderl4063 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NorthOlbo -Except that with the telescope, you still need a tripod, and a very good one at that. I don't own a P1000, but the quality of the image stabilization that I have seen in other videos is extremely impressive. And that's what make the camera such a success with bird watchers - it's basically a 60x spotting scope (with zoom) that doesn't need a tripod. Plus, you get the images recorded to check markings later on.
      If the P900 wouldn't have been such a success in these circles, Nikon wouldn't have had a reason to make the P1000

  • @rreichar1
    @rreichar1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I agree that the P1000 cannot replace an FZ1000. But it’s a really nice supplement to other cameras. A lot of wildlife photographers carry them for that situation that comes up where you just can’t get close enough with your 600mm lens. Often the P1000 is used in lieu of a spotting scope. Price is similar but with more zoom. I like to take moon photos and probably have taken hundreds, if not thousands, in my life. The P1000 is a great tool for that. Certainly it has to be used within it’s limits. It’s not an all round camera like an FZ1000 or RX10 IV. It’s exactly the opposite. It’s a one trick pony with a really amazing trick.

      The fact that you are reviewing and comparing “bridge” cameras tells me right away you are more interested in convenience and situational awareness than perhaps tech envy and newest/shiniest. A photographers eye and good composition is the first step. After that, having a camera on hand with the right settings and lens to do the job. Its amazing how little we need really (why cellphones are taking over the mainstream snapshot) I dont have a “best” camera as my wildlife favourite (Lumix FZ2500) with its nice zoom is too big for carryon and easy travelling. My travelling camera the Lumix TZ200 is amazing, decent zoom, 4K, very compact, but not as intuitive controls as the bigger FZ2500, although they both have the very nice 1” sensor for light gathering and good image density for cropping later. I like the optics and features of the Sony equivalents (had several) but find the menu structure awkward and controls unintuitive. Canon Powershot line is very good, great features and goes head to head against the Lumix line, worth considering. I haven’t much experience with Nikon (beyond that awful P1000 experience) and I would be cautious about the smaller image sensor cameras as they are old technology that is cheap to make and useful to stick a cheaper lens on for long zooms. (The crazy long zooms need a small sensor to maintain a smaller size and cheaper cost, that shows up in light issues in darker settings, lack of shadow range,

    • @NorthOlbo
      @NorthOlbo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops.hit send by mistake! Anyway, gone on too long. Watch more youtube reviews of “bridge” cameras, try to avoid, or at least be aware of the “fanboy” reviews and product supported reviews. They are often shallow and not objective. And watch some of the youtube videos on taking better pictures. Some really simple rules (rule of thirds, limiting elements in a photo, not having intersecting elements, leading the eye etc) make a HUGE difference and require no special photographic equipment. Good luck with it and thanks for your comment.

  • @sapereaude391

    I never hear any critics of the P1000 mention that the 3000mm equivalent focal length is only achievable because of the small sensor; so, to end this review by praising the zoom but then say that it would be better with a 1" sensor pretty much explains why. If the sensor was 1", the maximum equivalent focal length would be a small fraction of 3000mm.
    I have just sold my P900 to buy a P1000 which hasn't arrived yet (hence TH-cam recommending P100 videos to me) but I also have a D5500; each has its uses and if I am going out taking photos, I usually have one or the other in my rucksack whilst using the other because although the D5500 takes better photos, having the P900 has always given me the chance to get shots I would not otherwise be able to get. It is better for taking close up photos of stuff in the middle distance than picking out targets miles away, though, especially over water and on warm days where there is always vapour and haze and I think that accounts for the soft focus appearance - the amount of water in the air over several miles would cause this effect on any camera and I have noticed that most videos demonstrating the P900 and P1000 seem to have included long distant zoom shots over water. However, this can be used for stunning cinematic effect if you can find a long straight road, preferably with some dips in it, put the camera on a tripod at one end and shoot video of cars approaching.
    Anyway, for me, I accept if for what it is. Its limitations are, by and large, offset by its exceptional features. It supplements my DSLR and gives fantastic video options which I don't have with my video cameras.

    • @NorthOlbo
      @NorthOlbo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree that this lens is amazing, but not when fully extended. Past 2000mm it degrades, after 2800mm it is fully stopped down to f8. Between diffraction at that aperture, low contrast image and small sensor the conditions have to be optimal for a decent image. The FZ1000 zoom is too small, but a zoom with a higher MP image from a 1” sensor will beat a super zoom 1/2.3” with its inherent limitations. Not the initial picture, but by cropping into the higher resolution, brighter and crisper image in post. Throw in haze, dust, atmospheric turbulence and vibration (tripod only helps on that last one) you are fighting outside degradation which has nothing to do with the lens but plenty to do with picture quality. If you lower expectations and consider this a telescope you’ll be more realistic.

    Have the P1000 and several other cams. The P1000 pics are fine if you live within it's limitations. Quality pics can be taken at an effective 2200mm. Don't go higher than 400 ISO. Don't shoot in low light. Get a chest mount cam carrier. I would submit that 1" sensor cams and 1/2.3" sensor cams BOTH suck for critical work (get a full frame) but the weenie sensor in the P1000 can produce acceptable pics at a distance that leaves all the 1" sensor cams in the dust.

    They will not be losing money on the P1000. The people who will buy this camera are those who had the P900, and it is quite a bit better than that camera. You have obviously never used a P900. It is a specialist camera for situations where you need a narrow angle of view to frame your subject (which is not necessarily a long distance away - a lot of what I use the camera for is only about 10 - 30 m away). Your Lumix will not be capable of getting the sorts of shots the P1000 is used for, it simply does not have the reach and it's sensor size cannot compensate.

    • @gloppy101
      @gloppy101 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It gets down to image quality: the FZ1000 has substantially better IQ out to it's 400mm reach and a bit more with iZoom or cropping vs the P1000 having good IQ out to 2000mm, the the IQ dropping off to just ok out to 3000mm.

    Thank you for this review. What attracted me to this camera was the possibility of moon surface shots on a clear night, however I could just buy a mid range refractor and adaptor. My concern is beyond the moon, why would I need to zoom so far, I really want landscapes and good light capture and detail. I'm a complete beginner and would welcome any advice on which camera and lens. The fz1000 on the basis of this reveiww actually seems pretty decent but recently I read up on the Fujifilm X100 series...again any ideas are most welcome thank you all.

    • @NorthOlbo
      @NorthOlbo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The P1000 is certainly not a beginners camera! It has a great niche spot but its handling and image quality would frustrate you. I cant speak to the Fuji line, but nearly all of these manufacturers are high quality and have a product suitable for you. I would speak to friends, an actual real camera store and online reviews. I wouldn’t go smaller than a 1” sensor, 4K video is a must now, and ability to easily control aperture, shutter speed and focus. After that your budget will limit your choices, and whether you want a long zoom or not (not really needed for landscape!). A lot of “features” are almost useless, like lots of filter and light effects. Most you’ll never use, or can add later with more control in editing software. Size is important if you travel with carryon, and possibly water/dust proof if you are in wet or windy landscapes. Atmospheric turbulence is such an issue, especially if you add motion (no stabilization can help much on a really long zoom, and a tripod would need to be substantial to handle the weight of a long zoom) that your moon/planet shots would be under very specific conditions. Reading these “real life” reviews by actual amateur enthusiasts are very helpful, hopefully we at least identify the things that the quick reviewers dont point out or gloss over. They are after video hits with minimal effort. These full scale reviews take a LOT of time and effort to do a decent job. Thanks for the comment and good luck in your selection!

      Try walking around with a Canon 5D and a Tamron 150-600 hanging on your neck. lol And the Tamron is small compared to some of the giant Canon telephotos that animal and bird photographers use. lol I do have the Tamron and it doesn't take long for my back to start hurting. But it's a good lens for the price and I've gotten some nice shots with it.

    Nice comparison. It always depends what people want to do with there camera. What i surely see a lot of times is that people get tricked by numbers. high zoom .....wow, high MP's ..........but small sensor. I think most important is that your are satisfied with your camera. Yes I have the FZ1000 great camera, yes I have the FZ200 great camera, I even have the G9 which is top notch and at the moment (post focus, weather sealed, 4K60, touchscreen, awesome evf, great app, 20fps burst on mech shutter, great ergo, dual sd cards, etc, etc) only about 300euro more expensive as the p1000. Now about figures for some photo's my G9 with a simple 45-150mm lens will come pretty far with great IQ why ??? simply because better sensor, bigger sensor, 150mm becomes 300mm, it can take 80MP photo's so cropping can be huge.............. ;-) Like said i like all my cameras all have their specific plusses and minusses and the perfect camera still has to be invented :-)

    Thanks for an honest, objective review of the P1000. I would like to see it compared to the Lumix FZ80 24-1200mm for a closer comparison, realizing Nikon P1000 is still 3000mm. I had and tried the FZ 80 for a month and tried it out with birding. Low light and Low ISO made it very difficult to Autofocus. I sent it back. I also felt the quality of the lens lacked as well.

      @NorthOlbo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your opinion. Both cameras are pretty good but lack the 1" sensor that is really needed for decent low light and extended ISO. I think the FZ80 has a better camera behind the lens with more sophisticated electronics, while the p1000 has the better lens. Each to their own needs!

    Another video where author missunderstood the purpose of super tele. It is not to picture far things it is to fill your frame with small objects at normal distance. And also the opposite in macro, it is not good if you have to be 1cm to the object. Macro is better if for same ratio you get bigger distance.

I had p900 (already returned to Amazon, as wanted to upgrade to p1000, but I still didn't buy it) , and also had expensive uv filter. Photos made with the filter looked so much more blurry and smudged at maximum zoom in comparing to naked lens that I immediately stopped using it. I test shot with the P1000 while on a outing with my camera club. It's sweet spot is definitely under 2000mm and anything over that was too difficult to get a decent image and those images were just ok. Ergonomics are poor as the balance is too far forward with the lens. Given the choice of this P1000 or a shorter reach bridge camera, I greatly prefer the Canon SX70, Panasonic FZ80, Panasonic FZ1000 (best of the bunch for IQ) Kodak Pixpro AZ901 (90x zoom), Kodak Pixpro AZ652 (65x zoom), or the Nikon P900 or B700. If I need more zoom, I use my feet.

      Jim, your input is valuable to me. I was considering the P1000 for contrail spotting only. Currently I have an FZ80 for it but it does'nt have anything I'd call image quality especially at max focal length. It looks like the very last seconds of this video.
      Larger sensor cameras have superior IQ obviously but they lack focal length, cropping does not help here.
      The best images I get with a dslt and 12" newtonian but that isnt an option to carry around.
      So my question, IQ wise what was your experience at max FL with the P1000 as there are a lot of great photos/videos of course what we do not know if those are just the best picks of thousands of captures.
      With the FZ80 you can also get some, 1 in a 1000 maybe. So is the P1000 an alternative or is the IQ at max FL similair?
      Thanks

    Unlike most TH-cam camera reviews this one went sideways in a hurry.

      I'm testing my trusty FZ1000 against a FZ80 (which has the 1200mm zoom). Low light is the devil with that 1/2.3" sensor on the FZ80 but optics and "moon shot" is damn near same as P1000 for a quarter of the price and way more stealthy. That moon fixation is goofy really.

    • @NorthOlbo

      Are they higher? I do know Nikon is a great camera brand, not this model. People buy Nikon because its Nikon. The name, like Canon means camera. Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, have great cameras too but the brand is not clear, these companies make so many different products in audio, computers, graphics, phones, microwave ovens...you name it. So people dont treat them as “serious” camera companies. I am comparing feature by feature, value, use, and ignoring “brand” bias. I say many times in this video how great the P1000 is, unique and amazing. Its just that the great Nikon short changed the P1000 in too many ways, the tripod placement, the menu, the app, the sensor, the ergonomics. Why.? ...the lens is too damn expensive to make money at $1000! Thats the cost of a decent set of binoculars or telescope. Add a high end camera? Uh...no...So get real with the limitations and enjoy the telescope you bought with the cheap camera stuck on it.

    🎉 For those, who wanna give up the Superzooms, like the P1000, for Moon and planetary photography;
    1. For the Moon a "mid range refractor" + a mount would cost a lot more than the P1000,
    2. For Moon and planetary photography we need FOCAL LENGHT! Now, a "mid range refractor" with its 4-600mm is not enough, we need Barlows - or a much cheaper solution is the planet killer Maksutovs with 1,5-2m FL.
    3. You can't carry those on your shoulder, right? 😂
    So, I ❤ Nikon P1000.

    I own a Fz80 and is light and great fast focus for shorter closer amazing shots at a great price of $300 dollars, the fz80 I believe overall does better than the P1000 for close fast auto focus shots. I own the P1000 also and it alot of times for closer shots has a hard time with auto focus, it struggles to focus in auto so you have to put it in manual focus and hopefully you can get the picture of the wildlife or insect before it's gone or fly's away, you have to put it in manual focus! I take pictures of a bunch of stuff including birds butterflies and dragonflies and the fz80 does a amazing job at that kind of close up pictures. The p1000 hands down wins overall for long distance shots the fz80 can't complete, but the fz80 is I believe biggest bang for the buck for a everyday person wants a good camera takes amazing pictures and has a 60 optical zoom that would satisfy a lot of people, but if you want zoom good quality pictures and not paying $3000 dollars for a DSLR the P1000 is great camera cant beat right now!!! if you can handle the auto focus sometimes not working right and having to put it in manual focus to get the shot The p1000 is the best camera for a $1000 dollars right now latest and greatest product available !

      skiwealdo Thanks for the thorough comment! I can’t find the perfect sweet spot between a good 25-1500 mm zoom with a 1” sensor and the other usual features (4K, time lapse, great menu/app) for under $1000. I’ve come down to the new Canon SX70 and the Panasonic FZ80. The reviews I’ve read of Canon’s remote phone app sounds poor compared to Pan, the lens is longer but thats marginal at that distance. I’m familiar with the Panasonic dial logic and menu choices to maximize my understanding and use of all the camera’s capabilities so its being added to the fleet. I’ll be doing a series of tests to see if I still will keep the FZ1000 with its better 1” sensor 20.1 MP images or if I’m happy enough with the FZ80 1/2.3” 18 MP, but with that big honkin’ 1200mm zoom. Your description of it sounds pretty good. Thanks for the comment.

      Thanks for the correction and bringing up one of my pet peeves. What is it with the photo industry with its weird labels. 1/2.3 s is about the LEAST intuitive description of a sensor size, next to Micro 4/3, or worse, 1 inch. Millimetres people. As in 35mm film equivalent, or 70-210 mm zoom, like every OTHER part of the camera. Why do we not use mm2 for sensor size? And why an imperial measurement in a metric camera world? Is it because the consumer powerhouse triad of Liberia-Myanmar-USA (the only non metric countries left in the world, USA in good company!) dictates the labelling of sensor sizes? How weird is that? Anyway..rant over...:)

    excuse me, but that is a very bad comparison. you must compare every parameter calculated and compared to the sensor size. the camera shaking of the P1000 should be compared to the FZ1000 both at 400mm. then the aperture at 400mm equivalence of P1000. when you compare a full size cam at 400mm with a cropped at 3000mm?!? when you finally showed the picture of the ship we could see that the P1000 with 3000mm (cropped sensor) has a way better picture than the FZ1000 with 1500mm (full size sensor). ---> quintessence is that P1000 is way the better camera

    My first digi camera was the Olympus UZ 2100 with a than whoooooooping 10 times zoom. I was very happy with that camera that back than it costed 1000 $ when it come out and I brought it. It has fixed smalllllll lcd, evf with around 100.000 dots or less, a great for its time stabilization. Now, about this Nikon; only his magnificent telescope zoom is worth 1000 $ and you get a camera body with a nice swivel lcd, etc. attached "for free." The only and BIG drawback is that the camera must be used to charge the batteries. Imagine to charge one and second spare battery 3 hours each, because the camera would surely devour a huge amount of energy to move at least half a kilo of glasses back and forth to zoom, than the powerful stabilization also need energy, than the big screen etc. Not to mention the flash. And the battery on the other hand looks very small. For one trip one will need at least 3 batteries, that means 9 hours the camera to stay idle used as a charger. The solution could be to buy two P1000's, one to use as camera the other as a charger. Till some obscure Chinese manufacturer will not came out with a charger for this camera, I will not purchase the P1000 for the mentioned reasons. So I invite everybody to buy the P1000, in which case the big sales will encourage the obscure Chinese manufacturer to develop a charger, and than I will purchase the P1000.

      Joe Hart There are some great cameras out there by all makers but you must not go below a 1” sensor, regardless of lens/price etc. You will be disappointed by quality. I’m waiting for Panasonic to come out with its replacement for the FZ2500, which is a nice zoom of 24-480mm, 1” sensor, fast focus, touch sensitive articulating back screen (very handy!), reasonably fast lens and a comprehensive and not completely illogical menu system (aka Sony Menu). It has a plug in for your mic, plus headphone jack to listen and is a serious video camera, just below the fabulous Panasonic G4 which is a video beast. Even the tripod screw is offset so that you can change out batteries without messing around with taking off the quick release tripod plate. Nice, as it eats batteries. Apparently Panasonic has discontinued the FZ2500 as it was too close to the FZ1000 to justify the big price increase, so used models or clearouts from camera stores can be got at a good discount.

      It really isn't. With sufficient light you can get pretty decent images at 3000mm resolving more detail than you would get at 2000mm

      Trouble is you get many days in this country especially from now on when light isn't that good so you'll stuggle to get a decent image with a sensor same size as a smartphone.

      I understand you can't get big sensor quality and the small sensor is a trade off to have this enormous 3000mm. I don't think this camera tries to compete in the image quality department but without spending thousands of dollars and having to lug a bazooka around, you won't be able to get better pictures at 2000+ Fl with a bigger sensor camera. If you look around on the internet you can find pretty 'decent' pictures. It's a niche, fun camera to have, not for everybody.

      Yep thats right, I'm not trashing the camera really there are some very good point and shoot cameras about as i have one for every day use and they are getting better and better with image quality, I've the sony Rx10mk4 and it gives excellent quality photo's and video in all but poor light situations.

      I was considering the Sony too and I think the 600mm is more than sufficient in most situations. It's a much better all-around camera with better image quality than the P1000.

    to summarize, FZ1000 is overall a better camera with it's 1 inch sensor, and "bright lens" but to be honest P1000 zoom range can't be matched.. and I am still impressed.. I wouldnt buy any of them thou because I already have FZ200 / FZ300 which is F2.8 all way bright Leica lens.. and I just dont need more than that :D!

    Thanks very much. I was overwhelmed by the hype and was going to purchase the P1000 but seeing your thorough breakdown of the pros and cons I will pass on it.
