    Rod bearing wear mostly comes from ignoring the proper warm up of the engine and especially the oil temp and correct servicing… oil is the life blood , proper quality oil of the correct grade changed regularly (~5000 miles) and making sure no high rpm’s until the oil has reached proper working temps. People just jump in and thrash and douse the correct oil due to cost and or lack of changes… basically misuse.

    30,000km on one oil change? All the cars I’ve had are 10-12,000km. 30,000km is absolutely bonkers. No wonder so many of these engines have bearing issues. Service schedule is literally promoting it.

      You can thank people who shop based on annual maintenance cost of vehicles and the extreme left who have pushed large companies towards carbon credit issues and try and hold these companies accountable for any waste oil the vehicle produces during it's life on top of it's consumption. It is far cheaper to change that oil every 5k miles then it is to repair any of the major mechanical issues that not changing it can cause. The inside of an engine should look like new and not varnished. Varnish is directly related to the oil breaking down it is that simple.

      @@jbee9713 Of course NEW cars are great bud, but it's the long lasting QUALITY that makes them legend.
      As a past BMW owner I can attest to them being GARBAGE in the 2nd hand, even fixing them myself the parts were overpriced, over engineered, and always under delivered.
      Cars shouldn't be "consumable" like BMW makes them. Lasts for 80-100k miles and then they are junk.
      This video is even more proof to the fact BMW knowing sets their cars up for failure. Make the rod bearings too tight, recommend a thicker oil so it can't lubricate properly, and recommend 19,000 mile oil changes (which is completely absurd). It shouldn't take aftermarket support to make a vehicle do what it was intended to do.

    • @Shift4g
      @Shift4g 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@noirceur_ I don't know how many high performance (and I mean race caliber) engines you've been around, but NONE of them are reliable when used for their intended purpose, or when not used as intended. The mistake BMW made was packing such a thing into a consumer friendly package that people believed would last like something with 5 moving parts. The sad fact still is you can't have things that push the technical envelope and last too.
      That being said, I agree that cars (and everything else we buy if you are honest) is designed to be more and more of a consumable and only engineered to last so long on purpose.

    When I owned a M6 V10, Mobil 1 Ow40 was my choice. The car even ran a few degrees cooler too. Another common cause with rod bearing failure was people not warming the car up enough. He wasn’t priming the fuel system. Disconnecting the crank sensor means you can spin the crank at a lower speed without the engine firing up, giving the bearings half a chance to settle and get some oil around them before going straight up to idle speed.

    Interesting as this, it feels somewhat contrived. We now know DT bought a ‘project’ car, one with a reputation for fragility, but it comes from a BMW expert who had already done most of the wok it needed. That rather diminishes the ‘project’ aspect. Then DT go back to the seller and he finishes the work needed. So we are left with a car that is apparently all sorted, as Mr Vanos put it, so what is left to do? A wrap? A few other frilly bits? Surely the idea of a project car is that it needs a lot of work, and that is what is interesting.

      There's literally no reason to toss out a quality synthetic at 3000 miles...all you're accomplishing is wasting money. I run a high quality synthetic to 7500 miles and have had the oil tested multiple times and every test has come back telling me the oil can go to 10k miles without issue.

      @@glamdring0007 To each their own. I once had a bad lifter tick that I couldn’t fix immediately. I noticed at a fresh oil change the tick was barely noticeable, but at 3000 miles the tick was very noticeable. After an oil change the tick would go away temporary until I changed out the lifters. I’m not arguing that synthetic oil can go a lot longer than 3000 miles, I’m a firm believer that it can. I’m just saying for me, and my vehicle specifically I like to change it out at 3000 for my own benefits and reasons.

    Truly epic cars. The V10 was the pinnacle of BMW. An exotic masterpiece of an engine stuffed into a pretty normal car. This is what made BMW M always so great. Now all we get is hopped up variations of pedestrian engines in the M cars, and even the dual clutch transmissions are gone. They might be better cars than ever before, but they have no soul. Nothing is TRULY bespoke with BMW anymore.

    Looking at condition of bottom of that car it is easy to see it has lived in UK. Very few locations are as hard to underside of cars as UK. Certainly cars in continent are on average in much better shape except up north where winter is harder and sand is used to provide traction which breaks paint in suspension parts and allows rust to set in.

    Worth getting a new battery and getting it coded to the car. Also, stick it on a CTEK tender when not in use.
    This era of BMW loves to eat batteries, it came from an era where the tech took a huge leap forward, but the power draw from this new tech was not optimal. So a weak battery will throw up lots of random errors which can be frustrating.

    There are some concerns I have with the information in this video. As an E92 M3 owner I've heard all about the rod bearing "issue". While I agree it is a thing, very few engines actually fail from it. Yet it's funny how everyone who spends the £2k getting this work done, whether that be at 30k miles or 130k miles, they are all told they are just one hard drive away from disaster.
    Anyway your 'fix' was to fit bearings with a bigger clearance and then use a thinner oil. Come on Mike, you're an engineer, didn't that sound a bit wrong to you? I'd highly recommend if you're ever going to take this car on a track put in the correct 10w60 oil. While 10w50 will be fine for a daily driver, it will be too thin at the 120°C the oil gets to when being driven hard and you risk causing the failure you've just tried to prevent.

    • @olly1oo6
      @olly1oo6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As an e90 M3 owner I also broadly agree with this. The overwhelming consensus from independent BMW mechanics I've spoken to is that 10w60 is still the correct oil to use for the reasons you've described above. Having said that, I live in what car companies classify as a "hot climate" (Australia), so perhaps more of an issue here.
      Equally, the newer BMW OEM bearings are perfectly acceptable - no indications that they spin at anywhere near the same rate as the old ones, even with the tight tolerance. But equally the aftermarket bearings are perfectly acceptable and I don't see any major downsides to better tolerances.
      Owning these engines isn't as complex as people think. Warm them up gently, then drive as you wish. Regular oil changes, and do the bearings as preventative maintenance every 100k/km / 60k/mi. A few extra steps involved for the reward of a spectacular engine that is otherwise very reliable.

      Have you looked up fluid film strengths and viscosity at 50w v 60w?
      Lots of e92 boys all use 5w40 or 5w50 or 10w50 in track and no issues.
      60w is far too heavy especially with oem bearings.

    • @naterockwell7735
      @naterockwell7735 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Redline 15w50 with great results. Daily driver occasionally spirited driving. Tracking I would definitely use a 10w60.

    Cranking the engine without a start-up until the engine oil pressure light goes out is a technique I always use after a car has been standing for a while. Another layer of care for the engine.

    • @Mardy72
      @Mardy72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another thing you can do is fill the engine with oil through the port for the oil pressure switch using a hand pump. Doing this fills all the passages and journals with oil before the engine cranks, rather than waiting for the oil pump to build pressure. 👍

    I'm astonished at how many design flaws (and some seriously obvious ones) BMWs seem to have compared to other lower end brands. The V10 bottom end, I would of thought would get sorted in testing. Oil seals is another. I've never owned a car that needed a top up bottle of oil in the back until now. It even has it's own OEM zip up case- oh the irony!
