Keep the SMG!! Here in Canada we got plenty of manual e60 m5 and having felt both the SMG gear ratios fit the s85 powerband much much nicer. The car feels quicker with the SMG and 4-6 gears only drop around 1k rpm upshifting making it sounds like an f1 car on the highway. Ppl here swap the diff on the manuals to 3.91 i think but that gets expensive and you'll be revving higher while cruising.

It makes the most of the engines power band and for me adds to the driver experience, auto for when you want to poodle about, flappy paddles for race mode! The manual gearbox has 6 gears compared the the 7 of the smg, it will drop the revs too low between gears and therefore performance wise will be slower.

The US (!!!) version had a manual for the E6x M's that was never sold in Europe, but yeah, there's that guy who dives even deeper into the BMW parts bin to put together something that's apparently even better. I would make sure the engine is in perfect working condition first, though, and if it is, do the swap.
I say swap it. In the end it is about the driving pleasure and there are a lot more sport wagons with automatic transmissions. If you are looking for a 500 hp manual wagon... well there aren´t really options for that and I think it is just as it is with a CSL. You don´t ruin it with a manual swap, especially since it isn´t a dual clutch.
How genuine in his answers and observations, most people would of said yes go for the manual its purer, but he totally gets and understands the V10 estate, its a family tourer, why spend that money its all there already, he didn't once mention the jerry response from the gearshift, it appeared at home in his hands. For what reason? Ben Collins who has driven for James Bond stunts, raced cars, was on Top Gear testing cars around dunsfold for 7 years or so, and he says leave it as it is. He knows what he’s talking about. Why spend all that money, when it’s perfect the way it is. 🤷🏼
@@Metal05 Because manuals are more fun than automatics, especially old single clutch ones, because modifying cars is cool, because having something unique and interesting is better than having something standard and dull, and finally because I just personally prefer manual cars. They asked Ben's opinion, and that's great, but they also asked for everyone else's, and mine happens to be that swapping in a manual would make it a better car. I'm sure the car is fine as it is, and I'm sure it's adequately fun, but I believe that having a manual would improve it. If you feel otherwise, that's fine, but just because I have a different opinion to someone else, regardless of their experience, doesn't make it wrong. I wouldn't argue with Ben, or anyone with his level of expertise anything objective with regards to driving a car, but the question of manual or single clutch auto comes down purely to opinion. Me thinking that the car would be better with a manual doesn't detract from anyone else thinking the car should have an auto, and I understand why some people might think it would be. Does that answer your question fully enough?
@@sionjones1257 ah great, thanks for providing me with a very in-depth answer of manual vs auto. You gave me the answer I was looking for. Cheers and enjoy your evening.
Even before reading alot of the comments, I'm not a fan of swapping it to a manual transmission. Fix the air suspension, tweak the engine when you can and leave as is . If and when something goes wrong with the transmission, then change it . It's a great looking car and seems to be a bit rare . Great video btw.
Irrelevant and unnecessary introduction to the video, but highly amusing. Keep it auto. Its not like it's a lazy, sloppy slushmatic. It's quite precise and keeps you in the torque band well. Plus gives you the luxury cruise option. Honestly, what would be gained by making it manual?
I would love if Ben would take the Steering wheel of this channel, of course Mike and the Crew are the people who are doing the blunt of the work, you guys need a bigger budget. Maybe combining it with sponsors, I wouldn't mind watching a minute of ad segment if it we could keep The Stig. Combine it with guests and their cars/projects from other channels could also be helpful spreading the word.
Ben is right. Do not swap for a manual. This kick you in the back and your nuts smg has it's vibe. Keep the whole car as OEM as possible. Not many of them around in this state
As an owner of 1 Silverstone SMG and another silverstone M6 with M3 manual I can say that its 50/50. I do enjoy the SMG on the track as I don’t have to worry about mis-shifts, have a smg tune so it’s a bit faster than oem, and I don’t have to worry about my diff. For everyday use such as being stuck in morning commute traffic I’ll definitely go with my manual variant for few reasons such as not having to repair diff due to aggressive slow downs/acceleration, don’t have to worry about the slow gear shifts, nor do I have to worry about a transmission code lol.
i might not have much, but my 2002 focus wagon has been great and im getting similar vibes from the stig on this m5, a nice balance of practicality and fun
DEFINITELY SWAP THE BOX!!! I owned one of these M5 Tourers but only for about 6 months. I sold it because of the intolerable fuel consumption and the gearbox. I absolutely love a fast BMW estate cars and the E61 seemed to offer everything but it failed miserably in reality. I only drive for fun (and it was fun. Very very fast even by modern standards) so I didn't mind paying for the fuel but it has such a small tank too that you are constantly looking for the next fuel station. On unlimited German autobahn it was literally a liability. Always driving with your fingers crossed to get to the next fuel stop. Not what I dreamed of. In the end though it was the gear box that killed it for me. It's hopeless around town and parking on any kind of incline is impossible. The biggest threat of crashing this car is actually when trying to reverse park on an incline. IMPOSSIBLE! So, regarding the manual swap. Absolutely YES!!!!!! It will also be more fun anyway even though the auto is great when underway. PS: That engine!!!!!! WOW! Worth owning just for that.

I'd love Ben to have a role in the modern top gear. Poetic
Ben Collins, confirming the fact that he is indeed the car review version of Gordon Ramsey.
I didn’t know Ben Collins was such a great car reviewer! Huge respect
My vote is definitely to manual swap it, give it the gearbox it always deserved
@@Metal05 You too ✌️
Even before reading alot of the comments, I'm not a fan of swapping it to a manual transmission. Fix the air suspension, tweak the engine when you can and leave as is . If and when something goes wrong with the transmission, then change it . It's a great looking car and seems to be a bit rare . Great video btw.
Alas still no explanation on the mondeo
oooo I like the silent stig back then. Now watching the talking stig, I like this version more. Please have him on more.
Probably theee best sounding M, gosh that V10 at 8000 rpm, music to my ears
The Ben Collins is awesome!!!
Listen to Stig. He was really having fun with the car 👍🏽
I like the idea that Ben Collins just appears out of a Copse when called. Great content!
Ben is right. Do not swap for a manual. This kick you in the back and your nuts smg has it's vibe. Keep the whole car as OEM as possible. Not many of them around in this state
@10:22 One of the better descriptions of what a touring car is I've heard.
bens a quality driving presenter, proper multi talented chap
Unsurprising that Ben was in the military. Still absolutely has that attitude about him. Really interesting to see it!
Ben is super cool... those scratches on his arm makes me think he really ran through the woods!!
Production keeps getting better, big up!
i might not have much, but my 2002 focus wagon has been great and im getting similar vibes from the stig on this m5, a nice balance of practicality and fun
BEN is the KANE of Driving, A monster driver and a great talker.
Some say he defecates in small plastic bags and he is completely right about not doing the gearbox swap. All we know is, he's called The Stig!
No manual swap.
Love your work 👍
I did not expect the Stig to love this car so much
DEFINITELY SWAP THE BOX!!!
