Learn Dual Wielding Swords #1

  • Dual wielding with two swords is often viewed as something only masters of swordplay can do. It's indeed a great challenge for body and mind, but in renaissance Italy it was also something commonly taught at fencing schools. Everyone has to start somewhere, so here I rearranged Achille Marozzo's (1536) two swords techniques into chunks to make it easier for all interested people to learn.
    First we have to learn to use our weak side sword in a useful manner. A good way to start is learning to parry with the left and striking in the same Tempo with the right. Here are all the parries the left sword can do in Achille Marozzo's Opera Nova and a couple of suggestions for Beginner exercises. Let me know, what you think!

      This is my first viewing for your channel so not sure if there is anything before this so am texting as such.
      There are many teachers, many teaching types, and many ways of improving both.
      Your upload in my opinion is well versed for the intermediate to expert level. It's slower paced and more informative which isn't a bad thing, the only bit you improve on is adding text bubbles for the terminology and a description of them in text bubbles as you commence.
      All in all, worthy of viewing.
      I am already a weapons master myself and about to branch out into dual welding and this is a very decent example of historical to practical application.
      You would lose a lot of people's attention without bubble texts to help engage in my opinion.
      Example of this is the "in/out" you described. I understand it but as a former teacher of weapons myself I know that without a better explanation/physical examples that would go right over beginner's heads.
      I'll be watching all your material and adding likes for sure👍👍✌️

    Great video once again 🙂 ! And Stefan's pants make him look like a landsknecht 😃😄 very stylish ! Also this song is from the Witcher 3, I think they play it in the isolated parts of Skeliege mostly late at night when searching for treasure in shiprecks 🙂 Cheers mates !

    And here a little rant on Guardia di Fianco:
    The text says: "Essendo tu adonque rimaso in quelle due medesime guardie come de prima te amaestrai, de qui voglio che tu facci pala al tuo nemico della tua gamba manca, accioc- chè lui habbia cagione de tirarte de dritto o de roverso;" which I would translate as:
    Since you are therefore back in the guards I instructed you first (referencing to the end of the previous chapter -> coda lunga alta with the right, porta di ferro alta with the left hand), *from here* (de qui) I want you to expose you left leg so they (your opponent) have reason to strike a mandritto or a riverso;
    "hora nota che s’el tirasse de mandritto, tu el parerai del falso della tua spada manca, cioè tirando el pugno all’insuso in guardia di fianco ..."
    -> now, if you notice that they strike a mandritto, you parry that with the false edge of your left sword, that is, pulling your fist upwards in Guardia di Fianco ... etc from where the counter is described.
    Since pulling up the hand from porta di ferro alta (we are talking at least sternum level here), makes a parry to the leg almost impossible, I suggest that the "from here expose you left leg" refers to an invitation involving the left hand to be dropping down. With that you can get that parry in line with the image of Guardia di Fianco in the two handed sword section :) Cheers!

    Will this work with 2 shorter swords? Two 20" blade swords (what I have) vs. a 36" blade longsword (which I spar against the most). Currently I practice Kali. I'm wondering if this approach would be more effective.

    Why parry with the edge? You see the German masters (ex. Joachim Meyer) explicitly state to use the flat of the strong. That parrying with the edge is the signature of a poor fencer.
    Can you please explain the discrepancy on technique? Also, would you not be able to utilize parries with the flat of the strong? While simultaneously attacking.

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, because our sources say so.^^ I'd be very interested in that exact quote of Meyer though, since he is contemporary to the later Bolognese sources. :)

    Nice work, breaking down the plays in a system like this is very efficient for students !
    BTW I can't remember where Marozzo describes a guardia di testa point down, can you remind me in which chapter ?

      Thanks! I think that was his 3rd Assault for sword and buckler, true edge to true edge - parts 6 & 8. In 6 GdT should be named, in 8 you get the same action without the guard name, but a description of the wrist turn + the reference to the earlier play.

    • @Nimico
      @Nimico 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SchildwachePotsdam Ok, I can see what you are talking about in part 6 (but not in part 8). I have always though the volta di pugna was for the buckler hand because you need to turn it to grab the opponent sword by the inside. I will have to try it your way someday :)

    Parry on your right side looks very uncomfortable, you have to move your left sword a looong way to block the strike. Why can't you just mirror the exact same parry-riposte you make for your left side? So if someone throws in a riverso, block with right sword and step-thrust with left one?

    • @SchildwachePotsdam
      @SchildwachePotsdam  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is indeed a possibility and something that Manciolino advises us! It needs just a little bit more coordination to throw a good attack with the left, while parrying right, so it didn't land in the first video of this series. Fun fact: When Marozzo solely parries with the right sword, he does so to cover his left 😅 He uses the hanging parry to then throw a downwards strike as the next motion. Something we will explore in the next few videos :)
