I hauled the Afford-a-Board all the way to Kansas City just so I could have it graded in person by 'Professor Pedal" himself Josh Scott. Josh seems to like every pedal hes ever tried but what is his expert opinion on what the affordaboard has to offer? tune in to find out.

"There's no reason not to own this." - - - This is going to get buried in the 400 other remarks, so whatevs. But ... These two guys (you two guys on the off chance either of you see this) & Henning are f#cking awesome for actually demoing these things - & also for not saying "for the money" everytime. Some of these things are just plain "great" regardless of the price. In the hundreds of thousands of AliBaba specials there's of course lots of garbage - but there's some real jems. I love having a 6-pedal board that sounds good that costs the same as a "regular" overdrive (which is of course cool too). Thanks for digging through the pile on our behalf.

    • @neocollective
      @neocollective 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Ha, that's a great observation, saying "for the money" every time ruins a lot of these videos...who wants to watch mediocre sounding gear reviews, right ? But some snobs are more concerned with protecting their boutique ears reputation before admitting to the talent behind some affordable products.

You may want to 'retire' this board and then start with "Affordaboard 21" where you start again with the shootouts on currently (2021) available pedals. Then at the end of the year compare A-20 vs A-21 boards.

I’m not knocking them (I actually have a JHS Sweet Tea v3 and a couple of others), but it’s also true that they’re very highly priced for what they are. The vast majority of JHS pedals are copies of existing designs, so the argument that “cheap pedals don’t have to do any R&D (whilst we do)” doesn’t fully stack up here.

I have so much respect for Josh. He designs, manufactures and sells pedals for a living and yet he doesn't diss pedals by other brands. Remarkable character. I am going to buy me a JHS Series 3 pedal even though I'm try to build my own affordaboard.

I’m starting to think it’s the player that plays the pedals and not the pedal that plays the player... anyways Josh can make a turd sound good, and sell it to... that’s not a put down on JHS at all... they’re great pedals... I need to stop typing, to much coffee.

great video to watch, seeing Josh process the innards as he listens to the tones. This series motivated me to build a affordaboard. So far it consists of Soniccake Fazy Cream(Fuzz), Outlaw effects Deputy Marshall(Distortion),Mimidi(OD), Donner Evolution(Mod square),Ammoon Pockecho(Delay and Looper), Soniccake Twiggy blues.(4 in 1)About $320 canadian.

As this unit has 2 ins & 2 outs. Maybe the outs can be split for the reverse function. One output being "Wet" and the other is "dry", So you could Isolate the dry channel and only hear / record only the wet output, (reverse effect) ???? Unfortunately at this time (221129) it's no longer available from Donner.

yeah it's only got 2 transistors. i don't know what it is and i'd like to trace the circuit, but i've got enough fuzzes and it's not that different from a muff to be fair (also it's $40 now, not 20).

This video made me buy a Donner Island delay. It is a great pedal, however, it really needs a clean, isolated power supply or else it whistles and hums. But with a clean power supply (not a daisy chain) it sounds just like the video.

Great comments from between 39.00 and 40.00, including the remark that by modern standards iconic pedals became that way, due to their availability at the time, and circumstance. This is great argument for using what you have, and not getting too hung up on perfection. I mean, there's a whole lot of signature guitars hanging on CEO'S walls that have never been played, and probably never will be.

There's an affordable fuzz I found that I like. I think it's also a Big Muff. It's by Caline. It's called a Fuzzy Face. I bought it because I wanted a Fuzz Face. But it's not a Fuzz Face. It's much more Big Muffy to me. But it's cool. It has a switch that cuts the mids and a button that makes it sound like an octave fuzz. Of all the fuzz + octave fuzzes I've played this one does it pretty well. It sounds like an octave fuzz. So it's pretty versatile.

Ok...I'm not an afforaboard kinda guy and I'll tell you why.
Here's the thing...sure chips and circuits can be pretty cheap, especially when produced en masse in China. But, I don't support that.
What happens is (& I've seen in in the audio gear world), is the smaller/boutique players get squeezed out as they can't compete and you end up being left with only the larger corporates or the Chinese clones (basically). It doesn't happen overnight, but it will happen as I'm watching more cheap Chinese clones begin to swamp the market & get support from some of the more popular channels such as Ryan's.
I subscribe to 60 cyclehum (and Ryan is great in all his dorkiness), but affordaboard isn't my thing.
I get it, we don't all have the cash to splash. But, I'd prefer to save and support people such as Josh, rather than Chinese mass produced products with nigh on slave labour.
    That's just me...and I won't by Chinese guitars either.
I'm hearing everybody now...but what about your phone..what about this or that...well...I've drawn the line here.
Some things are unavoidable others there are clear choices. I want passionate folk like Josh to flourish, not some faceless copycats.
It's just horrible when years of R&D, passion and so on, just get buried by what's basically theft and nobody can do sh!t. So, yeah, I care!
Right....back to the video I'm not quite half way through.
    Cheers fellas. 🎸🎸🎸
