I just bought a 1984, stock 302 with the hydraulic flat tappet cam. It's my first time working on a pushrod or carb engine. My year has the EEC-IV (I think)? Which I think your truck would have come with from factory as well? To my understanding it is some kind of electronic timing and carb setup. I believe the explorer motor you're using would have originally came fuel injected? I'm not able to recognize everything by looking at it yet but I understand the basics (like some people converting to the older duraspark, or a GM HEI. I'm just wondering what you did for an ignition system? And if you had any issues getting it to work with the truck? Thanks! I want to put a better carb on mine but i'm having a hard time deciphering old forum posts on it.
That’s pretty much what I want my ‘85 to sound like. Right now I have the bone stock 302 in it. Wanting to upgrade the top end and install headers plus I might no to a magneto ignition because I hate that EEC-IV system. Hoping to get at least 300HP. Curious what your thoughts are on components? Would you consider one of those Edelbrock top end kits a good idea?
@@gthree0239 edelbrock top end kits are decent but you could piece together your own kit for cheaper that would make more horsepower. If you can afford it, AFR heads or Twisted wedge heads will get you well over 300hp.
Please tell me you didn't reuse the old cylinder head bolts! The factory cylinder head bolts are torque-to-yeild and they stretch with just one toque down. If you reused the old head bolts, sure you'll tighten them to spec, but their clamping force is weaker than their first use. In the long run you'll have a head gasket leak and also run the risk of breaking those head bolts off inside the block threads. I've heard and read guys saying they've never had a problem using old head bolts, but just because they haven't it isn't a good idea to do it anyway and definitely not good tech to share. Not meaning to bash, so please don't take this as that.
Great truck and good job always nice too finish but better too do with family
good build! i got a 85 f150 short bed i just finished building my 306 also put a e303 cam in it.
How do you like your E303?
@@FloridaCrackerKustoms i havnt got mine put in yet just got the bottom end rebuilt 2 days ago its getting close.
Head gaskets that are incorrectly installed will cause overheating.
Back again I had to see what your plan is now!

@@northernninja3321 I went with the GM style HEI distributor, one wire runs the whole ignition system.
@@FloridaCrackerKustoms Okay awesome, thanks for the super quick response!
Should be a good running truck when you are done

@ nice. Thanks for the tips.
Is it ok to use the used roller lifters
Yeah just give them a good cleaning.
What cam did you use for this build? Sounds great 👍
@@jefferyhernandez4222 thanks! It’s a Ford E-303.
@@FloridaCrackerKustoms 10-4, sounds great! Sharp truck as well.
Did you forget fuel pump lifter thing

@@MUSTANG408W 100% reused them. I’ve never met someone who doesn’t reuse them lol
